Eating less unhealthy food will still make you lose weight. Weight lifting is next for losing weight. If you want people who can explain it better than I can, you can head over to the fitness thread, or just read a few articles on the subject.

Added muscle requires more energy to maintain plus you look better when you do lose weight rather than just skinny. Best way to lose weight is to eat less and healthier. cardio (like running) does give you more calories burned/unit of time however. like immensely more. okay but eventually you are going to stop running and for the rest of the day its immensely less. not really. you burn like double the passive calories after weight training than resting iirc? even that only puts you about at 80% of what an hour of running does for your calorie wise.
its a psuedo-alpha-male internet myth that weight lifting is superior for weight loss. You'll see results faster, because your muscles will start to show sooner, but that doesn't mean you burn more fat. you should be doing both to build your body if you are trying to burn fat and improve the way you look. there is a reason that body builders lift weights like crazy when bulking and they cut back to add in more time for cardio when cutting for a show. and its not because body builders don't understand how it works. you'll burn 1k-1.2k calories from an hour of running, an hour of weightlifting is 400 with an extra 400-500 over the rest of the day. A bodybuilder burns more after weightlifting than the average person as well, so the average person does better to do cardio than weight lfit if their goal is calories burned and they can only do one.
the issue with trying to bulk is cardio burns too many calories, when you are trying to add mass.so you don't do cardio AND weight lifting if your goal is mass. if its strength and burning fat, its a good idea.

@PX
Why not just go to Mexico for 900-1100 bucks for a week at a 4 star. That covers everything, all you gotta do is tip and if you go shopping spend a little there.
Mexico vacations are the best.

For the vast majority of people, it's just always better to do both. Shooting for measurable gains? Then go ahead and protein load and go for big weights. But if you're going for general fitness, always both.
When I get myself into the gym, I warm up with a casual mile run and then do several different exercises targeting different muscle groups, and cool down with a nice stretch. I'll generally do sit ups, russian twists w/ medicine ball for abs, isolated curls (adjust a bench to be at an angle to rest my upper arm on do the curl specifically targets the biceps)/push ups (1 push up, 1 sloooooooooow weight raise behind the head in the kneeling position, 2 pushups, 2 weight raise, etc.)/planche slides with physio ball or some variation of the above for arms, calf raises/wall sits/getting creative with some other leg stuff. There's not tons of body weight stuff for back that's easy to do everywhere, but simple arch ups are pretty sufficient to round out general light core.
Come to think of it, I've gotten really lazy about doing push ups/abs in the morning. I should really get back to doing that.

The reason why I mainly do cardio is because it's easier to remember "I need to run one mile today in X time" than it is to buy weights/get a gym membership and then look up a million different exercises to target muscles that I didn't even know I had and then look up even more conflicting information about how the blazes I'm supposed to do it without hurting myself. I don't even know what half those terms in soniv's post mean but it sounds like it takes 500x the time it takes to run a mile every day.
I just wish someone would make it as easy as running.

Fair enough, I guess, though I'm increasingly doubting that I'll get to finish it before new years what with all the family shenanigans.

lol tbh, half of them are probably gymnastics bastardizations

I've only been doing this for a few months and I got most of that . The internet if really helpful for weeding out the obviously bad information and then I just use some trusted sources or people to weed out the rest. It's not that bad to get a routine that won't break you.
edit: Think it's more important to get form right in everything and not be arrogant thinking you know how to do things.

It takes zero effort to start running. I know how to run.
Weights and workouts are money and effort.
|
to be fair, running is also effort
The only times I don't hate running are when I'm playing actual sports

Christ what a boring subject to discuss.

I still disagree PX. ur not burning >1k callories in an hour running unless your doing like 6min miles the whole time. Also it up to an 36hrs of increased metabolism after a weight lifting workout. Also you produce more lean muscle which is more effective at callorie burning. It generally releases more hormones conductive to burning the calories you eat next. I agree for heart and lung reasons alone cardio is good and important. And a proper workout for the average person has elements of both. Of course diet is still the most important factor. But I'm pretty confident if you are trying to burn callories lifting everyday will work better than running everyday.

An hour of running 10 minute miles is 1k calories. Dude. Unless you're tiny. In which case losing weight isn't a goal. 6 minute miles are much more. Like 1500ish
