Jeff please, it's good, but not better than Pan's Labyrinth.

I think that depends on what you're looking for. They're not really comparable tbh.

I can't tell if you're sarcastic or not with your first comment, Jeff.

I loved Pacific Rim and Pan's Labyrinth for differing reasons and I think they're both pretty good movies.
I think my wife would disagree with the former though, heh.

Now I know you're trolling.

Never saw the below before, but Braum's character design (I'm on a character design 'kick' sorta since the whole DnD thing) is so fucking good.

Pacific Rim isn't terrible. It's got a lot of the usual action cliches, most peoples' backstories get tied up either without too much thought or ignored completely, logical errors everywhere, but it's a good action movie. Even though it wasn't an amazing lazer sword which made big explosions, the sword was pretty hype.

See this I get.
I'm not a huge fan of giant robots either, it's the giant monsters that get me.
The one major gripe I had with Pacific Rim (aside from character cliches being a little weak, even for a cliched movie---I was surprisingly able to look past that pretty easy though) was the fact that the lighting of the action sequences made things very difficult to follow, and much of the time it was hard to get a sense of monster anatomy.

I found pacific rim to be completely average. I was rather entertained, but it didn't really touch me in any good (or bad) way.

I can understand the interest in the giant monster stuff, but pacific rim fell into stock giant monster problems. where the monster didn't really have character. it was an animal of base intellect. Maybe i'm just too into Lovecraft but i like my monsters to have an agenda, not just instincts.

if you are going to go down the whole, Monster just following insincts and killing as something you can be interested in, you have to go with the Xenomorph over stuff like godzilla or pacific rim/coverfields monster. there is nothing threatening about a giant monster apart from it being large you know? a movie starring mice as main characters trying to keep their home from being destroyed by a giraffe has the same level of threat to me.

The eventual unraveling of the story behind the monsters was nice though, and I loved the look into the 'monster world' at the end. In that sense the monsters do have something beyond simply following instincts (or at least those that sent them do). I mean we'll see what happens with the sequels (and on a Lovecraftian note, one day maybe there will be hope for At the Mountains of Madness).

The one point where I felt kind of cheated was at the very end of Pacific Rim, they made it such a big deal that only things with the exact DNA of those monsters can pass through, so when our main hero grabbed onto one of the monsters and flew through the portal with him into the alien world, I was so sure he was taking a 1-way ticket to hell with a nuclear bomb in his pocket. Seemed like such a sad story of self sacrifice, and sacrifice in general, as the girl seemed to be dead too iirc. Then his radio could somehow reach from the alien world to the human universe (?!?!!?) and they all survived?! I was like wtf, it was supposed to be a dramatic and somewhat sad story, why do you happy end me so hard
fuck

I liked the first transformers for one reason and one reason only. The opening scene where you see Blackout(I had to look the name up) Transforms and starts shooting up the US base. Part's of that just reminded me of Battletech/mechwarrior to a point that I could kinda see what a film of that would be like due to it.

I prefer my giant robots piloted, slow stompy and heavy impacting which is what parts of that scene show. Of course I enjoyed Pacific Rim mostly due to seeing genuine giant robot vs monster fights outside of anime or Godzilla. It's not flawless by any means but it's an enjoyable film. Unlike say the racist, pandering bullshit that was Transformers 2.
