FFTA was just cringeworthy. but i think that's only because it didn't hold up to FFT.

And Jeff, final fantasy tactics is one of the best games in the series, even if its totally different than the rest. The only people i've seen hate on FFT complain about it not being a standard JRPG. while people hate on 7-13 for other valid reasons.

Side note on final fantasy: i never cared for FF6. i know people try to tell me its the best one. but I really just don't like the game.

FFTA is a fun game, but IMO doesn't live up to it's predecessors thanks to some gameplay flaws. I haven't played A2, but I'm told it addresses some of these.

Which really doesn't make a lot of sense to me, because the core gameplay mechanics are similar, if not the same--the only difference is the migration from dimensionless JRPG combat to a 2D grid--which adds a lot of potential depth for a minimal increase in complexity.

It really was the mobility. Being able to play it while waiting around for stuff was awesome. Tactics was the better game but I sunk more hours into Advance thanks to portability and not spending much time at home.

And i guess the lack of freely navigable over world map and exploration of individual non combat areas. Though in a spartan purely functional sense there is no real difference between FF7's overworld and FFT's.

A lot of the FFX chars were naive idiots but it was fun to watch the naive idiots to naive idiot things and i really liked the gameplay and most of the character interactions

Yeah, I would consider that valid if Final Fantasy's overworld/dungeon crawling had more functionally meaningful aspects, but even with regard to that, FF generally falls short of other JRPGs like Lufia (which has more involved dungeon crawling/puzzles), or Persona (which has more character interaction).

The extent of exploration in most FF games is checking pots for hidden items.

Not sure what kind of problems you are referring to for FFTA, but FFTA2 is really not that different from FFTA beyond the changes for front-facing attacks.

well ff9 had some hidden islands and stuff, ff8 had the hidden map draw points ff7 had the special materia caves and WEAPONs and the whole easternmost continent.

but travelling on FF7's overworld for example just does feel better than on FFTs. from a user experience point of view.

As an aside, Lufia 2 has conceptually my favorite endgame/postgame for a JRPG even though the implementation at the time was awful and rage-inducing.

FFX was a great game. It's a bit linear, but linearity, IMO, is not a flaw within a game.

FFIX was top 3 of the franchise.

Lufia 2 is one of my favorite games ever, of any kind. The gameplay, the story, the music, OH MY GOD THE MUSIC. So good.

I tried playing FFTA again after some long time and just found it incredibly boring. The gameplay is just really slow and it didn't feel challenging at all.

The first time I played through FFTA I killed the final (?) boss (unknowingly) abusing a bug where Boost into some combo does crayy dmg and 1shot him. LOL.

I felt same way when I tried FF6 for the first time. But I swear, anybody who hasn't played FF6 should give it a chance. Easily my favorite FF of all time.

FFT has some really stupid mechanics, like gaining xp from hitting your own dudes.
