At the same time, there does have to be some sense of urgency. Particularly with newer players, it might be hard to really get them "into" the story in a way where they feel the kind of tension and emotion necessary for it to be fulfilling. Everyone loves the character/story-centric sessions, but those are only really fulfilling if everyone really gets into their characters. Experienced players are much better at getting into their characters the right way regardless, but Soniv's group isn't exactly working with years of roleplaying experience.
Threat of death is a very basic way to create that tension. It's not really the best one, but it's the simplest one that a newer D&D player can relate to because there's some tangible loss when their character dies.

Then it'll switch to the satsuki theme 40 seconds in
I'm eagerly awaiting the ignorant american responses to be collected from twitter and the like. Then the snarky comments about said comments from the miku fans.
Ok I'm on Archaege but so confused with all this skillset stuff. I'll check it out properly when I get home from Gym. Created a Nui named Numy in Vitalism.

I'm fairly happy with how I've created urgency for them. They started their main quest with 2 months to get where they needed to go, and they would have arrived with a good amount of time before they had to be there. But they've hit all these bumps and detours, and after 2 players spent 5 days in jail, and after losing a party member, they're definitely starting to feel the urgency a bit more.

If all you want to do is be cool and do awesome stunts then I think Exalted would be more your thing. You can make a stunt out of everything in that and your starting character is far more superhuman than a DnD weenie. Although I'm sure some DMs still kill people off in that game, when I played though it seemed to mostly be about having a good time.

there's mindless fun combat, and then there's spoonfed combat. That honestly looks spoonfed as fuck.
wtf the Batman combat system is really fun.
This video doesn't even speak to the combat of the entire game because he's playing with a fully upgraded character. In the beginning of the game you need to get a x8 streak to get a combat execution, you only get one execution per streak instead of two, and if you get hit once you lose the streak. Also his point about mashing the space bar and being invincible is stupid because it proves you can survive but it's not like he's actually winning the fight.

Spacebar spam like that would also be incredibly unfun and not something I would do.
Which isn't to say that there isn't something wrong with the combat - I don't actually know, I haven't played the game. But it looks like a game I would have fun playing. Just because it's not Dark Souls, doesn't mean it's not a good game Jeff.

Well yeah, it's unfun and doesn't actually accomplish anything lol. Agreed, Shadow of Mordor is no Dark Souls, nor does it claim to be. And don't get me wrong, you get super overpowered in SoM, but it's not indicative of the entire experience and it's a pretty nice ramp up of getting stronger and feeling like a badass.
