But, much like your son, even if you don't care about your birthday, other people do. If someone else cares about you and wishes to celebrate your life, that's reason to celebrate.

The care generated when you have a birthday is pretty superficial and worthless. I mean I'm fine with having bday parties for kids, it's fun and something to look forward to when you're little, but we're all pretty much adults here ffs.

Last weekend was my best friend's 23rd b-day. We had a kegger, it was awesome. I don't care about birthdays at all, but I will rarely complain about a good excuse to get together with friends and drink our faces off.

I'm not a big birthday person either, I hate getting presents but come on people!! It sets up the perfect reason to go out with a group of people and drink till you can't walk or if you dance enough stumble home and hit up all the food places you can. Then wake up and have no shame for the wrong things you did.

Birthdays matter to me because it usually a week before thanksgiving. It gives my friends and I an excuse to throw the Pre-Thanksgiving Party that we all know we want because families make the holidays hell.

Last time I did something for a non-family birthday was as a pretext to send something to a friend (who was supposed to think I didn't know where it was not her exact address; turns out she doesn't care about her birthday so much that she wouldn't remember never mentioning it). Wouldn't want to seem weird by sending something out of the blue (well it wouldn't bother me, but the point isn't to bother them either), so a birthday that is not supposed to be celebrated or being given gifts for is as good a pretext for a "Yo, I keep you in my thoughts from time to time" as you can get.

I mean, I get what Wave is saying - I've known way too many people (usually girls) who freak out about celebrating their birthday week.

But at the same time, I do enjoy a good "despite the world's damnedest attempts, I survived another year" gathering.

For my family members birthday basically just meant taking them out to eat to somewhere good (generally a steakhouse) and then cake later. Once you're past the age of Jeff, at least.

Well, it was drown or suffer for 600 years in a half-life, only to later be tortured, and then even later melted in a pool of lava.
I think Déagol got off easy.

Pretty much a good excuse to spend more money than you usually would on food and alcohol with your best mates. How is that not hype enough?

This may be silly, but I was having a conversation with my mother today and I think it really finally hit me that my impending move will be the first time I'm more than an hour from my parents long term in my entire life. I've been 'on my own' since college, but I went to school ~45 mins away, then moved back really close(~10mins), and while I'll still be in the same state, it's close to a 5 hour drive, so no longer a distance I can cover literally anytime I feel I want to visit.

I'm not 'worried,' but despite my age it's still something that's going to hit the feels.

Where are you moving to if you don't mind me asking?

Moving to just outside Cincy, basically on the Kentucky border.

I turn 29 in a few months, definitely in the 'old' category in this thread.

That's closer to Athens! You can come visit and teach me how to play Dota in person haha.

Assuming you go to OU, I know about eleventy billion people that go/went there, including one of my new roommates. Been there for Halloween twice, fun times.

As for this birthday discussion, most of the people I consider friends tend to do dinners and a low key night of drinking at a house, which feels about right. It's not like they're craving the attention, it's pretty much just an occasion to get some family and close friends together. Could probably just agree upon random dates that bridge holidays to do the same, but birthdays are a 'thing' so it just happens that way I guess.
