Actually, what would you say are the really backwater states? To me the entire southern half of the U.S. except Texas, California and Florida seem like the boonies. I assume Idaho is in there.

It depends on what you mean by "backwater". Do you mean: one-street towns populated by people with shotguns and Truck Nutz, empty wasteland, or hillbilly stereotypes? The U.S. has all three, in pretty distinct areas.

The college towns and larger cities in the Midwest are just fine though. I mean, you still get the occasional guy with a Confederate flag on the back of his pickup, but that's the exception, not the rule.
The empty wasteland is pretty much everything east of California through the west half of Nebraska, as well as the Dakotas, which are immediately north of Nebraska. A large section of the Dakotas is rez land for the Sioux. That should tell you how valuable the land is. As you go west, it only gets drier; Utah and Nevada especially suffer from being in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevadas. This is where you get signs warning you, "100 miles to next gas station." Most of the land here is used for cattle ranching, as it's too dry to grow much of anything. Again, college towns and larger cities are just fine.
Hillbilly stereotypes come primarily from the Ozarks, in Missouri, Arkansas, and a bit of Oklahoma, and the Appalachians, which run along most of the East Coast. The Appalachians are actually extraordinarily poor, and are home to the historical basis for many hillbilly stereotypes like feuding families like this famous example.

I'm 6'1, no one fits well in a Beetle unless you remove the back seats, and slam the driver seat all the way back, and even then it feels slightly cramped.

the newer ones are pretty nice actually.
who needs interest rates. just invest in companies that take advantage of the poor. Banks, fast food, oil companies, discount stores, any company that takes advantage of poor people is doing pretty well.
