That death makes the second one that's really freaked me out in the series, which is noteworthy since on-screen violence rarely bugs me. The other was Viserys. *shudder* I think it's the screaming. Fuck. Also Oberyn is a dumbshit who I'm mad was too prideful to SURVIVE. Asshole.

I didn't even know Theon was castrated and all that shit done to him until way later in the POV of Reek who I didn't realize was him until way later.

It was kind of obvious since Oberyn decided to fight not on Tyrion's behalf but for his own purposes though. I mean man I really like Oberyn as a character but the moment he decided to go against the mountain I knew he was dead.

such is life with GoT, I'm only on episdoe 2 and 2/3 and someone I like has already died in GoT lol

Still, sounds like the series give him a lot more screen time for viewers to get used to him. In the books, he appears a chapter, he's there maybe 3-4, and then he dies. Sure, they're intersped so he's actually present for what amounts to a good third of the book's length or something, but as a reader it left me with a "Here, let me introduce a guy and make him sound like you readers should like him, and then immediatly kill him off just because. Oh, I didn't kill him off "just because" of course, but I didn't need to give his introduction so much importance and I added superfluous effort to make you believe he'd stay around longer, though."
In the series it looks like he got a lot more screentime, maybe non-book material was added just to expose him more? Also the fact that even if he's there for around a third of the season, with a week in-between each episode and people feeling compelled to be all hyped up and discuss every point to death between episode it makes him seem like he's been around for way longer when even only reading a few chapters each evening I only saw him for a few days at best. I guess viewers grow more attached and stuff to characters this way. I feel like it'd remove the suddenness of his death.
