The biggest mistake and lesson to be learned is probably not to spread the playoffs out over a month. So much hype and storylines get lost over that time. I couldn't be the only one who got impatient with the wait for finals. I get that Riot wants a lot of games to be played, but this scheduling relied extremely heavily on the quality of the games themselves, which only moderately delivered on expectations.
Another thing is the production. The production value was undoubtedly high, but was it good? I really didn't care for or pay attention to anything beside the analyst desk and the games themselves. A lot of other things like the videos and floor interview were disparate and didn't feel like it added to the total production beside some cool factor. Things just seem like they weren't well thought out.
I'll stop before I get into Alaric territory, but man, I just wish we (Riot, the community, the players, everyone) could have done better with S3 playoffs. It was good enough, which isn't what we should strive for.
I agree, the finals could've been better.
During the pubstomp I attended, people continuously poured out after every game (partially because it was late as fuck in DC and people needed to catch the metro/buses), but the 3-0 sweep kinda made it somewhat meh. The S2 finals were much more exciting from a pubstomp perspective (even though we only had one floor of the bar that time). Alot of cheering and countercheering because the matches were HYPE and CLOSE. This time, though there were Royal chants during the two games, it kinda petered out by the third.
Oh well, got my swag.

Biggest issue is formatting of tournament.
-seeded teams was a huge mistake.
-Staples Center, though great for big headlines, was not an ideal stadium to hold it in.
-A stomp in finals can't really be prevented, that's just how some finals turn out.
-Riot needs better translators, steal Chobra from OGN.
-Too many breaks, rather have more analyst banter than commercials/breaks.
-Need better ending to finals, last seasons and this seasons winners ceremony part was pretty weak sauce.
-Week break for finals, seems like a good idea, but really mellows out the hype.

It comes down to their choice of venue.
It's a tradeoff between mainstream accessibility and the history of tournament structure we're used to. I'm not sure Riot succeeded in their goals with this but you can't really fault them for pushing boundaries.
It would've been much easier to use the E3 convention center and thus also do semis+finals in one weekend (maybe even fit groups in too across multiple streams) like MLG of the past but we've seen Riot likes to try new things (for better or worse)

So I noticed the other day on the sidebar that Bisu was streaming BW. decided to have a look considering I haven't watched anything since the starleague final and it made me really miss the game. all the memories I had came back to me and made me really appreciare how awesome a game it actually was, and I was almost exclusively a spectator for 3 years.
That said, league is awesome and I'm glad we can continue the legacy of BW within this game

C'mon, I just closed stream and thread tabs after watching game 2's VoD, this time. Well, to be fair I'd have done it after half of game 1 but I got told the 2nd was actually good. Still hard to get interested when the length of the VoD and the way the first game goes tell you it's going to be a stomp. Screw full VoD length. :<

I think the crazy thing is if the games had been a nail biting full BO5 the criticism about the entire production being disappointing would be so little compared to what it is now. I'm not saying Riot shouldn't be criticized, just that they would be under much less scrutiny had the games been better. I find it interesting that everyone is turning on the analyst desk when it was so loved during the other stages of the tournament.

Yes I agree with you that quality games would have covered up production flaws and that's one of my criticisms. Riot shouldn't relied so much on good games for a good viewing experience (most of the other content being mostly filler instead of adding to the story). I know that sounds weird, it's the finals of a competition why shouldn't the expectation be that there are good games? Production should try to hedge against possibly boring content from the games themselves and focus more on the grandeur and achievement of becoming world champions.
I posted here because the tournament thread was more about the games and players and this discussion is more meta. (and this OT feels more homey to me than General  )

We don't know how long they had the Staples Center for. They might charge by length of the event and Riot decided it wasn't worth it.
