Ya years ago
I liked Animal farm much more just from a reading perspective, but I love what Orwell has to say on the English Language in 1984. He seems like a generally crabby guy all-around tho.

+ Show Spoiler [My list] + Zahndrekh DestrucTek with Solar Pulse (which I never used, to be fair) StormTek with Lightning Shield DespairTek 8 Gauss Immortals in a Night Scythe 8 Tesla Immortals 9 Warriors in a Ghost Ark 16 Warriors 5 Deathmarks in a Night Scythe Annihilation Barge Annihilation Barge Really blurry pic + Show Spoiler [Tau List] + Didn't look over his list specifics, but these were what I saw Suit Commander with Drones of some kind 3 Squads of Fire Warriors some with Drones Blob of Kroot with Hounds 2 Squads of Crisis Suits with (Markerlight?) Drones Riptide Pathfinders Broadside with Markerlight Drones Hammerhead A very pretty paint job + Show Spoiler [Battle Report] + We rolled The Scouring and Hammer and Anvil deployment. I got the redeploy Strategic Warlord Trait which I decided not to use, he got Skyfire for his Warlord's squad. I put two objectives forward in some ground cover and one back behind a wall. He put one on a cliff, one in a forest, and one forward by mine in the trenches. + Show Spoiler [Deployment] + I won the rolloff and went first. I deployed my big Warrior blob and Zahndrekh on the objective behind the wall. It turned out to be a Targeting Relay, neat. I put my Barges behind a wall and the Tesla Immortals behind the Ghost Ark. I messed up here and for some reason put my StormTek with them instead of on the Night Scythe. It turned out to not be a big deal, though. He put two squads of Fire Warriors on the objective in the forest, which was Skyfire. Bleh :\ Some suits went there too. The Commander and his suit buddies went on the other side by the cliff objectives, and the other Warriors, Pathfinders, and Hammerhead on the cliff objective. The big daddy Riptide and the Broadside went by some ruins in the middle. + Show Spoiler [Turn 1] + First turn I just moved up the field. We got Night Fighting, so Zahndrekh removed Night Vision from one of his suit squads and gave it to one of my Barges. The Immortals trudged toward the trenches. The Barges unloaded some fire into the Commander's squad, killing some Drones and one of the suits. The objective I landed on was Nothing of Note. The Ghost Ark shot into the Fire Warriors next to the Riptide, taking out a couple after some average rolling. His turn, the objective on the cliff (that his pathfinders were on) turned out to be none other than a Sabatoge! He lost a couple Pathfinders, who then booked it off and forward a bit. He then shot a lot into my three forward vehicles.... and whiffed EVERYTHING. He landed a single shot from the Broadside on one of my Barges, which I immediately Jinked. End of turn 1 picture + Show Spoiler [Turn 2] + Both my Flyers came in! Always a good thing. I wanted to get up into the fight, so I didn't unload anything, electing to just fly the Scythes up and shoot. I unloaded a bunch into the Commander's squad again, killing him for Slay the Warlord! But I didn't kill the Drones that came with it, so no First Blood. I shifted my Ghost Ark and Rapid Fired into the Fire Warriors again, killing all of them. Lucky too, since they apparently had Haywire Assault Grenades o.0 My Immortals reached the forward objective (Scatterfield) and popped a couple shots into the forest Suits, I think I killed a Drone or something inconsequential. His Kroot came in. I was scared they might Outflank right next to my Warrior blob, killing them and Zahndrekh and denying the point, but they came in the opposite side. Yay! Right next to my Immortals. Uh, crap! The Suits next to the Skyfire Nexus shot up into the Scythe with the Deathmarks, doing a Glance. Everything shot into my Barges again, doing two wounds to one and one wound to the other. The Kroot shot my Immortals, dropping two... who immediately stood up. The Riptide charged the barge with two wounds left, doing just one more wound. His dice hated him tonight. + Show Spoiler [Turn 3] + I unloaded my Deathmarks, who had marked the Riptide. Despite it not having done much this game, it still scares me. I explained the DespairTek S8 AP1 + HFH cheese to him, which he seemed to take in stride. Until I did about 3 wounds to his big bad Riptide with my little squad. Tesla Immortals picked off a few Kroot, but I knew that objective was lost. The other Scythe moved up and unloaded the Gauss Immortals behind the Hammerhead, which immediately cried and fell over, exploding without hitting any Necrons. Nice! The Ark dumped its Warriors onto the objective, and then shot into the Pathfinders, killing them off with the Warrior's help, except one hero Pathfinder that survived (but ran). The Barges popped off most of the remaining Suits/Drones that were with the commander. His Broadside and remaining Suit finally killed a Barge. His Skyfire Fire Warriors and Suits dropped the Scythe that unloaded the Deathmarks, killing one in the following blast. The Riptide charged the Ghost Ark, killing it. My army suddenly felt a lot smaller after losing 3 AV13 vehicles. His Fire Warriors advanced, taking some shots at the remaining Barge but failing to do that final Hull Point to it. His Kroot charged my Immortals, and I forgot to use my Lightning Shield >=[ Overwatch killed a few more, though. The fight afterward was brutal. I took a couple down with me, but ended up only making 1 Reanimation roll, losing 3 other Immortals. The table at this point + Show Spoiler [Turn 4] + I took out the remaining suit on the cliff side with my standing Barge. The Gauss Immortals moved up and Rapid Fired into the Fire Warriors. Zahndrekh's Immortals, no longer content to just babysit an objective, moved up a bit and shot into them as well, killing all but one who ran. Between my Deathmarks and the DestrucTek, the Riptide finally fell, after not doing a whole heckof a lot. My Tesla Immortals lost combat again, two falling and one standing up. The big thing about this turn, though, was that my remaining Scythe flew over to the Fire Warriors camping the forest objective and shot them, making them break! No sneaky objective there! He shot into my Scythe with the remaining Suits and Broadside, hitting pretty much everything and only glancing once (even after rolling one at a time to see if he stripped Quantum). Seems to be a running theme here. His lone Fire Warrio hero and remaining forest Warriors didn't regroup, but neither ran off the table yet. I lost two more Immortals and the Cryptek to Assault, but that one Immortal did a wound and managed to stay in the fight. The Riptide falls! + Show Spoiler [Wrap up] + He gracefully conceded. I had 5 points from Objectives and killing his Pathfinders, plus Slay the Warlord, First Blood, and Linebreaker. He had no objectives or secondaries until he killed my Immortals next turn. Long story short: Sometimes dice hate you. Then again, his list had very few things that could deal with AV13 in the first place, once he stripped them down to AV11 he managed to pick off some vehicles. I finished the game with only a Barge, an Ark, a Scythe, 1 Deathmark, and some Immortals + Cryptek dead. He was almost tabled, and there really wasn't any way he could have turned it around next turn. Overall I liked the list I used. It felt a little one-sided since I brought five vehicles that he could barely hurt all game, but it felt fun to field. I dropped the Lords because they got kind of expensive, but once I saw how fast my Immortals dropped in Assault I kind of wished I had something that would give my opponent pause before charging. If this was almost any army other than Tau, I would have gotten charged all over the place. This was my first time playing at this store so I didn't know what to expect, but it looked like most people were fairly casual and there were only a couple that were talking serious meta discussion and tourney strats (discussing lists like Wave Serpent spam, CronAir, and CSM Helldrake shenanigans). There was at least one other Tau player aside from the guy I played, a couple SM armies, a CSM dude, a guy with BA and Orks, two other Necrons, an Eldar, and a Tyranid player. Probably people with other armies/other people that weren't there, but it seemed like a decent mix. Aside from the guy who was part of Adeptus Windy City and talking about tournament play, no one seemed to be super competitive, so maybe next week I'll try some "fun" lists with Destroyers, C'Tan, Lychguard, or even my Monolith if I get it finished. Winning feels good, but you can tell a lot of people are just playing with what they have, and aren't necessarily preparing to go against optimized lists or anything like that. Still, overall a positive experience for my first outing!

I guess things like foretell, anticipate, prophesy, etc I thought the whole essay was pretty funny though. I'm not sure I agree on some of the things he says about "dying" metaphors, but it was interesting to hear him talk about the middleground where the literal meaning of the phrase such as "rev it up" no longer is implied, but hasn't been used enough to really find a niche in which the meaning is clearly and expressly fits. I think that his ideas phrases reducing our ability to truly articulate issues and think for ourselves is a bit of a stretch, especially with the hyper-exaggeration into Nineteen Eighty-Four.
