This isn't entirely true. Things can feel pretty pay to win and you certainly do need to know the popular legendaries so you can play around them, but I've seen a few (and by few I mean they exist) top tournament decks from managrind that had no legendaries and Trump has been consistently ranking up EU ladder (rank 2 last I saw) with a mage deck that costs less than 1000 dust after starting out with nothing but basic cards. So you can do really well simply by being persistent and playing well in the face of apparently OP/huge effects.
HOWEVER, and this is what I don't like about hearthstone, I find it really tedious to play a million games with pretty much the same deck like that. I love trying different combinations and even though 90% of my packs are 5 cards I already have there's still a bunch of cards I don't have with mechanics I want to try... but getting them takes forever. boooooring.

I'm doing a lot of IV breeding now but I'm wondering if that's really necessary. I don't know how strong IVs are for casual VGC style matches.

So apparently I won an arena match with my shitty deck in 5 turns. Turn 2 (he went 2nd) opponent paladin hero powers. Turn 3, thralmar farseer. Turn 4 argent protector nothing THEN hero power. I had an enraged raging worgen that hit his face for 24 damage alone. This was at 3 wins. Idk how he won 3.
