I'm a bit surprised at the reactions—not that people are appalled, but that you're surprised. I thought that this being a part of these countries' trouble was somewhat well-known.
It's all correlated to the loack of roads and communication systems, and means of spreading the information in general. Outside of the cities and great axes a lot of villages and communities are remote, if not completely isolated from the rest of their neighbours, so all these kind of rumours have an open field with noone around to debunk them, or even tell the people about the good practices instead of just "no, that one's bad".
Btw, JonGalt, I assume part of your job's to take care of educational stuff on these topics too (general hygiene, water, etc. too), is that official or is it simply "par for the course" when you're sent to teach?
On a totally unrelated topic, I decided to listen to Teut and put my faith in the light for today's arena run, but no Tirion so far.  Should I settle with the Black Knight or Sylvanas? I assume she's better in arena anyway (and nope, not gonna pick Millhouse).

@kyrie I actually had no idea where the fuck Lesotho was when I got my assignment. I did recognize the country when I looked it up on a map. never knew the name of that tiny country landlocked by south Africa
@dark yeah my host sister (she's 14) was raped and she literally had NO change in demeanour. I talked with her the day after (having no idea) and it was like nothing happened. her cousin, a teacher at my school, showed up looking for my grandmother and was like "so I heard polo got raped, how's she doing?" uhmmmm 'scuze me?
and in possibly the worst segue ever, this teacher is beautiful but she's related to me because her grandmother is my grandmother's sister:
1) what does that make her? cousin twice removed or what?
2) host family incest is acceptable right? it's not like we're blood related.
but she works with me and I think the whole family thing means way more to them than I am estimating. seems like too messy of a situation but it's still something I'm debating. worth?

Not trying to make fun of you or anything, but I find your wording slightly amusing with how you're mentioning both topics where culture vastly differs from the US, but it's only on the "is it 0K to fuck a family member (via hosting)?" that you explicitly wonder about their view.

@alaric I teach life skills too. basically health class. self esteem, confidence, goals, sex ed, and lots of aids stuff. we have 2 months of training for this stuff among other cultural issues and language.
and hey one of the peace corps goals is to share culture. only doing my duty.
AND FINE. If you guys wanna judge rapists I guess I can get behind that. Nazis too. the feels bp dayum.

On the flip side, because this is America, you see a bunch of terrible people lie about having been raped for whatever reason, and even having been accused of rape is enough to leave a black spot on your personal history for the rest of your life. Very nearly happened to a friend in college, because his one night stand decided she regretted her hook up and almost reported it to the police before someone stopped her. Just goes to show that people will exploit anything in their power if they're petty enough.

I knew about health, hygiene, sex ed. etc. but that's the first time you mention self esteem/confidence stuff. Is that a particular issue there (I mean, moreso than it is in "our developed countries" obv.)? Or is it just for the whole package or something?

While true, there are also an incredible amount of people (both male and female) who have been raped and never say anything.
It is a really sensitive topic on both sides.
