Just quoting from Artosis, maybe his solid experiences against Terran players in the previous GSL tournaments gave him indefinite answer to fight against Terran players in many ways even though meta changed every year.

The ro32 still existed back then in which Maru was almost eliminated several times and which caused the end of his streak. The player pool was also a lot healthier in 2018. The situation is not comparable. I supported the first seeds extra group swap back then and since it's inception because GSL was so hard that it barely mattered. Champs getting eliminated in the ro32 was commonplace. Now that the player pool is what it is and the top 4 gets to skip the first round it definitely feels like too much. Though as today proved GSL is still extremely hard and anything can happen.

"Free passes" is plural while that's the first season of Code S without a ro32; TY could benefit of three "easy" groups(effectively easier than the others) twice before this one, topping them once. Maru could benefit of the same privilege since he got eliminated in the ro32 of S2 2019; while GSL was indeed more stacked in 2018/2019, he still forged easier group for himself for three consecutive seasons.

When TY won GSL he got seeded straight to the ro16. He also got seeded straight to the ro16 in the next season as well. That's what I was referring to. Maru started in the ro32 for every GSL he won during his streak.

I wouldn't personally call any of them "a free pass for ro8" but it seems me weird than someone can accuse TY of having had it too easy in 2020 while it was basically the same for Maru in 2018/2019.

At least the eye-test makes me think his mechanics, reaction speed, multi-tasking are better than before. Not to say that it's championship tier or anything, but this playoff run feels pretty deserved. As for Hurricane, shades of Zest (for better or for worse )
