I've said this before, but he would have been called a bonjwa in 2017 if he had won all the series he lost 3-2 after going up 2-0. Almost all those matches were against the opponents that would have been his biggest challenge in each given event.

Surely there's no way Maru averages lower than ro8 right? Out of 11 seasons he's only finished below ro8 4 times (with the above scores including 4 wins and 2 ro4s).

Well I do believe 2017 is simultaneously the best and most disappointing year of TY's career, but he definitely wouldn't have auto-won 2 GSLs, IEM and Blizzcon by winning a 3rd map in each of those series. Well probably Blizzcon cause soO in the finals would have been his last opponent.

His average is exactly 9th place. This is mainly because he lost in Code A once (but also 2 Ro32 exits). If he had no losses before Ro16 like Dark, Maru would almost average Ro4.

Did you calculate that by using ro32 as 32, ro16 as 16 etc?
If so I think that's a flawed approach, since for example ro32 and ro8 would average out at 20, instead of the intuitive 16. (Bad results would weight more than good ones in general)

It's calculated optimistically. 4th place in Ro32 is 25, 3rd is 17. 4th place in Ro16 is 13, 3rd is 9. Ro8 is 5, Ro4 is 3. Because functionally those players that are eliminated in those rounds are all tied for the same position.
Not that it changes the order the players end up in.

Even aside from the meta not being great for Stats' playstyle, I don't think he's really the same Stats he used to be. And today may have been the last time he plays GSL before military, I think Stats implied there was a possibility of this being his last GSL. Hope not though.

No he is not, I am not sure how the military works exactly in korea but maybe knowing you are going to expend 1 or 2 years isolated from family and friends and normal life in general makes you want to enjoy life more

Yeah, in a way. On paper it looked like the one with the most even chances for all. But part of that is that nobody was quite sure what kinda shape Cure and Solar would be in on the day. Cure goes through in first? A lot of us were hoping for something like that, but who had confidence in predicting this outcome? Similarly, Solar out last? This would be a reasonable thing to guess for this group, but I really didn't expect him to get THAT wrecked. What I'm saying is that you're right that it wasn't close in the classic group of death way, but the final outcome was, I think, as unpredictable as it looked beforehand.

Maybe not auto won. But he would have been extremely favoured to win t least GSL season 2 and blizzcon. Both times he would have had to face soO in the finals, who even without the soO factor just didn't have great ZvT.
