I think if played perfectly Gumi should eventually win there. no way to know, but its pretty difficult to chase a marine based army with tanks. i dont think gumi could have forced a good engagement

Look at group A, the strongest Terran loses to a foreigner. Will you blame the balance? Innovation made the group himself and had the power to move Scarlett away! And look at group B - Dark and soO were favorites. But then again - this was a group made by players, with a random draw we could have had a better results - e.g. from group D we will have 2 P no matter what. With Maru there we could have TP advancing. From ro16 onwards is hard to tell balance from GSL distribution because of how the groups are set up. I'm not saying there are no balance issues, but saying this based on how players screw their groups in GSL is not exactly smart.

When one of the strongest players loses to one of the weakest players then it can very well be because of balance. Of course in that specific series Inno didn't lose because of balance looking at the games but I don't get your argument "He lost to a player he's supposed to beat therefore balance wasn't a factor." In the BL/Infestor and Blink era lots of players lost to players he's supposed to beat. I don't think in Group B soO was favored over TY. Is terran weak? I don't think we have enough data to determine that especially with the last patch being so recent.

My main argument is, that players pick their groups therefore we cannot directly say - "It's balance". Because players made it possible to have 2 Protoss players advancing from group D no matter what. Players made it the way that 2 strongest zergs were facing 2 terrans(thus 2 terrans were kicked even in theory before the RO16 started). Players are choosing their groups the way to advance and thus screwing any potential balance discussion. Can we talk about balance after group D finalize and the RO8 is done? Because remember, from group D two best PvP players advance, not necessarily 2 best PvX players! This is why I'm saying we have to stop balance issues at RO16. It would have been easier to see any balance issues with some random draw.

Maru is only good when terran is weak.

We're pretty close with 2 P, 3 Z, 1 T. If TY beat aLive we'd probably have had perfect results I mean even if the game is perfectly balanced there would be a decent chance that one race has 1 or 0 players in the ro8 just by probability. Remember 2016 season 2 where we had 0 Zergs in the ro8 but a ZvZ finals in SSL?

Remember 2016 season 2 where we had 0 Zergs in the ro8 but a ZvZ finals in SSL? To be honest I do think zerg was very weak that season. It was basically only Dark and Solar doing decent. If those two happened to fall in the ro16 zerg was dead
