Skill and luck.
Skill that he was able to beat TY, a bit of luck that Stats underperformed by a lot...(that game 3 throw versus TY T_T), and more luck because he faced Elazer in the ro8.
However, he did train in Korea for a while, and he practiced with TY and other Koreans there, and everyone who went to Korea within the last year or so has kind of got a bit of a skill bump (sort of).
It's funny, because though I expect soO to probably crush Special, if TY faces Special in the grand finals, it's not unconceivable that Special wins...

He's always had the potential to be really good. He's shown incredible play at times. He changed his name to have a new beginning and put his past behind him. A rebranding to coincide with him giving SC2 his all with the new WCS system. He has spent a lot of time in Korea recently, and knows many of the top Korean pros so he gets to practice with them. I think what changed was he got experience and stopped choking nearly as much. That last bit alone is probably the greatest thing the system has done for Foreign SC2 and it shows especially bright with Special.

That's the nature of asymmetrical matchups in SC2, compounded by the knockout structure.
League-playoff format (ala SSL) is by far the better way to determine the best all-round player and most deserving winner. Better still if it's purely league without playoffs (but can be quite anti-climatic).

Am I mad for thinking special has a realistic shot at winning the whole thing now?

Problem with most tournaments is that in order to win them you have to play a lot of matches late at night and it typically fucks up your schedule. So a lot easier just to lose quickly and go home early. However, finally there is a price pool that makes winning worthwhile. Hence why major decided to take the games seriously this time.
