World Electronic Sports Games tournament comes to its European culmination in Kyiv on October 6th - 9th. Twenty best StarCraft 2 players from Europe will fight for $27k+ prize pool as well as for eight $402k Global Grand Finals spots. Ukrainian fans have their first chance to attend huge StarCraft 2 event since 2012 WCS Russian Federation & Ukraine Nationals. And Stephano is not able to fight for the European crown this time as he's already an African champion.
Group A - Thursday, Oct 06 8:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) Group B - Thursday, Oct 06 1:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) Group C - Friday, Oct 07 8:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) Group D - Friday, Oct 07 1:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) Ro12 & Ro8 - Saturday, Oct 08 8:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) Ro4 & 3rd place & finals - Sunday, Oct 09 2:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)
I remember seeing Stephano win the Africa and Middle East portion. How'd he manage to pull that off? Does he have like dual citizenship somewhere? Easiest $12,000 he ever made probably I don't think he even lost a map from the qualifier to the main event.
I haven't heard from Strelok in ages. I honestly forgot about him in the last years. And I love how Kev's picture just looks like he has no clue why ToD and Valdes are raising their fists while they look like they enjoy beating up Kev
Stephano is such a scary opponent, he is not second to any Zerg players in the world. You know what i mean as long as you watched the match against Nerchio a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah Stephano has French and Tunisian citizenship.
Thanks for the info! Now we only need to know which match is going to be on which stream. Really hoping Serral can perform even though he is now in the middle of his final exams in high school.

I see some ppl in this thread allegedly getting hyped up by this insignificant tournament. What can I say more?! You're late , nowadays is just a case of flogging the dead horse, featuring some failed casters. I have missed pretty much all the tournaments in the past year or so (big Thank You to TL for not even wasting a drop of sweat in promoting such low quality content)
Watching kespa cup the protoss defend every drop pressure so well.. and now watching this the protosses vs dayshi just crumble apart and lose so much stuff to it. Wonder whats diff

The nice thing about RL is you can more or less count on a match being 5 minutes +/- 2 .
I run my sprinklers on rocket league match lengths instead of timers.

I wonder why none of the Protoss players are getting a single HT when facing phoenix. Showtime even had a Templar Archive... Seeing that Phoenix are such a strong counter to Disruptors, having a HT to feedback the Phoenix and render them entirely useless seems like such a no-brainer to me.
If Harstem 2-0's IBIMarine he jumps over Dayshi on mapscore. If he wins 2-1 he goes 6-6 vs Dayshi's 5-5, that means he's still through, doesn't it? More maps won?

I think Harstem qualifies as long as he wins vs IBIMarine, since Harstem won vs Dayshi, but I have no idea of the rules...

I think we've had less legit organizers but we'll see.

That's why I always prioritize my safety banes even if I have to give up advantages. ZvZ is so easy to lose in a heartbeat and banes are the best equalizer. One, two, twelve dead lings and a lead vanishes.
Serral knows what's up. Nothing is sicker than speedy unloads from multiple nydus. I've accidentally made a second because I thought one was going to get sniped once before. I realized just how strong it actually can be to unload an entire army in half the time!
Serral played well. There were a few mistakes in his play and he didn't look superhuman but he definitely looked the strongest.

Ah, okay. You should do two booths or the ability to set up while another player is playing, like GSL/Proleague does.
Nerchio is the only player from Blizzcon so far playing as well as he should. ShoWTimE and Snute were disappointing. (edit: Snute still has a shot at turning things around tho :D) Gratz

I mean that MLorD lost to Nerchio who lost to Snute who lost to Demuslim... It's gonna be closer than expected so it's unforgiving. His objective was top 8 but it's not gonna be a free pass with such a difficult group.

Why is MarineLord vs Snute that should be last game. GIVE ME MY DEMUSLIM!!! He has huge chance of getting out of this group and even winning! After the 2-1 over snute.
Explanation for the situation: Demu had mouse issues, we changed his pc and the mouse issues were still there. It was impossible for him to play. In the end we decided to at least show something and switched to mlord Snute, even though it fucks up our schedule even more. We're still working on getting Demu's mouse to work correctly.

What exactly can go wrong with a mouse anyway? Is it some custom drivers for dpi-settings or something?

when demu moved the mouse from left to right it would go down as well automatically. It's a weird issue and we couldn't find the source of the problem, probably the usb interface on the mobo or something. Other mice did the same thing.

Marinelord and Snute are so well matched. Interesting games.
ZvT sucks to watch now. If you don't win with roach ravager by 12 minutes you don't win.

snute didnt do any counter attacks, was quite ripped apart with multitasking, never attacked himself, went for a slow broodlord combo and lost the greater spire in the process, i mean so many multiple lots of huge amounts of mistakes on his part.

You've accurately described why you don't win.
A bio army is effective grouped. A bio army is effective split attacking from multiple angles. A R&R army is effective grouped. A R&R army isn't effective when split.
If Terran gets past the 10-12 minute mark without losing, it becomes their game to lose.

No it doesn't suck. It just becomes extremely challenging to win with as the game goes on. There is a very significant window between 7-10 minutes where you can crush T outright. But if he holds, you need to have a really good transition or else you are in deep shit.

I thought map score was over head to head score.. Thus, Snute would advance if Marinelord beats Demuslim 2-0, even if he wins vs Tomikus. Certainly looks like that was the case in group A?

I just came back myself and heard the commentators say they're unable to show group C so they show group D instead, no idea why exactly
Demuslim got the pc he used on stage in the first series of the day vs Snute. Nobody knows why but the issue is fixed. He is playing on b-stream (ogaming & take) vs Marinelord (they just finished). Now Demu has to play Tomikus.

yeah..
I think if Demuslim wins he is 2-2 just like snute, which means he advances because he beat snute, so it doesnt matter if it's 2-1 or 2-0
I believe it's map score first
As admin I believe it's head to head first
Oh check
A bit weird tho, I thought map score first is the standard in the RR format
I suppose head to head is actually the more common one, in sports as well. DreamHack has used map score first, and they've had so many RR tournaments in the past, even being the last to switch to GSL style groups, so that might be why it's more familiar to you.
That was a much more entertaining match and a good example of how to make an army with R&R work effectively.
The focus was always on the ravagers bile power instead of the mass of roaches. With upgraded lings, Zerg wasn't shitfucked by the roaches immobility in comparison to T's bio. That lended itself to going around the opposing army when it was too strong and attacking it in chunks when it was split.

I still don't think it sucks as long as you acknowledge the timing and how far behind you'll be if you don't achieve a critical amount of damage in it.
Elazer played it much better by utilizing the units when they were strongest and transitioning when they lost value.
Downtime explanation 2: Kas had sound issues which went away after some fixing. Then when Strange had to play Elazer he had the same sound issues. They're replacing the pc now so that's why it's taking so long.
Sorry once again, we'd like to see it work too ^^'.

Has herO played a tournament in Russia recently? Cause that would explain a lot.
when i first saw Valdes at this tournament, i thought it was a bit of an odd choice to have an American who lives in Korea cast a European tournament. i actually think it's really cool now. hearing him be completely bewildered by certain mistakes these guys make that you'd never see from Koreans is eye-opening.

PPl seriously underrate Elazer for Blizzcon but I really think he is the dark horse going into it. I think he is much more consistent than violet/polt and has proven his ability to slay foreigners.
Ignoring the tech issues I feel this tournament has been really cool so far. The one thing that screams at me is how cool it is to see groups and not single elimination so early in a top-tier foreigner event (which we haven't had this year in the circuit events.) The fact it is round robin too (ignoring the issues with round robin) really amplifies this, we get to see people playing a bunch of other players and different match-ups throughout the day.
It feels like it sells a better story than "oh he hit his best/worst match-up and so he dropped in the RO32". Maybe it's just because the results have been unexpected that I feel like this, but I've enjoyed seeing the matches and the games. The player pool probably does a lot for this as well with a good mixture of players from the very best in Europe through to those who are very good but we don't see at offline events much lately (Nightend, Kas, Beastyqt).
Hoping the tech issues disappear a bit for the playoffs : )
I think it would have been better to play the whole ro12 before the ro8 matches so that the ro12 players have a break between the two bo5s. This would also put the whole ro8 on the stage which would also be a good decision imo.

The stage is catered to a ukranian crowd, so the decision was made to make sure that Kas & Bly play on stage. Since the players all play under the same circumestances now anyway it shouldn't be a problem. I agree that it's unorthodox, but I think it'll work out fine.

I understand the reasoning, but I wouldn't call it even for everyone, as the ro8 players are well rested while the ro12 players may have had to endure a long series just before. It's a compromise in the favor of the audience on the players' expense which I personally wouldn't have done. Hopefully none of the players end up feeling it hindered their performance today.

yeah that was my argument as well, but the organizers argument was basically 'this is not the first time they play 2 bo5's in a row, shouldn't be a problem' ^^'.
EDIT: another reason for this format is to switch pc's as little as possible on stage, making the chance of technical issues smaller.

Well while I can understand the reasoning behind why people dislike the way its played there are disadvantages and advantages coming with it. You might as well say the player is warmed up just like in CSGO; Sometimes you have LB finals / finals on one day and the player / team coming form the LB has to go through one more match etc.
It's a shame Serral couldn't make it to top8 here as he would have been in a lot better shape in December than in here. He had big exams last week and this Monday so obviously he must have prioritized those. He will be out of school on April next year and go full time then.

I dont think its a big deal
It always depends on how the first series goes. If it's really long and exhausting and it was hard to win, it's probably not great when you have to play the next long match 10 minutes later. Like during the last Cross Finals, after his match against ByuN you could see Dark was super exhausted and could have used a longer break.

Guys, prepare for a large break because Demu & Nightend aren't at the venue yet (their match was scheduled to start in 1.5 hours). I hope we can start again in 45 minutes but it might take even longer.
EDIT: they just arrived! They'll have 30 minutes to set up their stuff and warm up. Break not as long as I was afraid it would be.

Problems we've had so far: - Namshar failing to login, getting his IP blocked - Demuslim having superstrange mouse issues, only works on 1 pc - Kas having his mouse freeze because it's 25 years old and dying by now. - Nerchio & Demu having FPS problems, that's actually a computer issue.
I don't think it's too bad. The problem is lack of communication (which I'm trying to fix now) and the problems that exist take a long time.

True. Still it's only one series. Can't draw immediate conclusions from just that.
HS is in their last bo7 on stage now (1-0). We have to wait for that to finish before we can set up. I hope it won't be much more than 1 hour downtime.

in that case it's poor planning having all different games played on one mainstage and hold up tournaments for it is stupid idea. hour long break is not good for viewership
they could easily play this same as series before without downtime

I think they are doing a good job considering how many events they need to run. Don't be overly bitter today is going much better than yesterday with all the technical issues. Also, love the casting on both channels.
we all know that Artosis will do anything for money. Actually, I miss-spoke. He will most likely do nothing as long as he manages to scam people by pretending he is doing something
I don't understand why they keep putting up timers that are false. It's a bit of a spit in the face when it never actually means anything. Either put a timer, and if you can't make it then switch to the caster that tell you that it's 10 minutes extra wait, or don't put a timer and just say coming soon at all times. Or 'expected to start in next 30 minutes' or something.

dunno if it's a bad thing or not the point is, some games are miles away from being competitive and entertaining for e-sports, WoT is a great example of what we should never count on, the same thing with card games where luck has more influence on a result instead of skills
and some games are fun to play, but not to watch (Overwatch)
personally I enjoy high lever CSGO tournaments/games, even though not playing it, but I will never take a look on such garbage as HS/WoT - those are casual games for casual ppl

The stream has a ton of issues, I agree. But I think the venue was pretty good. My only issue with the venue was the tables backstage - my a4 sized mousepad was slipping on it a lot, and some (not enough apparently) tape wasn't strong enough to hold it in place. Next time i'll bring a mega-size mousepad to any event, just in case. Tables on stage were fine.
Downtime wise, a lot of issues players had were because most don't yet know how to copy their hotkey/settings profiles from home. (USB stick or save it online). Some also don't understand how the process works when accounts get locked, either by logging in with battle.net (forces you to get an e-mail code) or trying to log in to sc2 directly (forces you to reset your sc2 password on bnet website). And if you derp around with that stuff too much, you can get IP banned.
Production could have done some stuff better, such as moving pcs around (designated PC per player), but a lot of the downtime was on the players. When players have to switch pcs, some routines can take anywhere between 3 and 7 minutes. But if players are not used to dealing with stuff they should know how to deal with, it can be anywhere between 10 and 30.
When players don't bring backup hotkey profiles, backup mice, in-ears, or get their accounts locked not knowing what to do, it takes time. Putting players on a different PC between every series can easily cause problems with inexperienced players.
Just wanna defend the venue a little bit, their method (not moving pcs) is not optimal but some players made a lot of delays that were on them.
@Snute: has any of this changed with LotV? Or were you given special accounts for other tourneys? Because most players in this tournament were going to LAN since 2010-2011 :o.
I didn't get to see Elazer 3-0 ShoWTimE but I'm glad he did it after all that talk on community PR about him. Beasty coming back from the forgotten Eastern European players is amazing haha.

It is kind of funny that we were 7 inexperienced players in Dubai for the Middle East-African qualifiers and we had 0 technical problems during whole tournament.

for some reason the way Valdes constructs his sentences is still so weird and funny to me no matter how much i hear him cast. so he always keeps me entertained.

look, NA has gone to shit. US is in full presidential race retard mode, Canada is too cold and NHL is about to start.
that doesn't mean South America doesn't deserve some love! Btw, besides plenty of South Americans participating, according to liquipedia there's also an Italian participating?
Who was this silver league player playing for Elazer in the first minutes ? Who would have sufficient SC2 experience and go in that concave in this small corridor ? That leaved the O'gaming casters and me speechless...
His bounce on his chair before the last match showed that he was very nervous. He surely below his normal level... I hope he will be able to correct this "live" weakness like MLord and Neeb did.

shouldn't Rain's GSL make that list as well ?
I only used results from the first two months after joining, Rain was on the team for about 7 months or so before he won GSL. I mean yeah he finished in 2nd at IEM San Jose a month after joining mYi, but Rain consistently was a high level player in Korea before joining mYi so it's not like that was a huge leap in form like for the others.
Hello everyone, I know that some of you are probably extremely mad about our WESG Kyiv delays / scheduling and staff like that so I may need to explain some of our issues.
First: please note that WESG had four titles running at the same event at the same time and StarCraft had obviously not the highest priority. It means that we didn't have lots of admins / production guys running around, there were really few people working on SC event and that was the reason why some of our delays were so long.
Second: WESG is the first StarCraft event which is hosted by StarLadder. I'm literally the only guy in StarLadder team from StarCraft world and our staff is not experienced with SC both production-wise and tech-wise. That's why we had so many issues with both production (long blank break screens with timers switching) and hardware/software (StarCraft-specific issues like player being not able to log in which caused battle.net bans for our IPs -> led us to 1h break) during the first days. After our crew got some "real" experience with StarCraft, Saturday and Sunday went fine. We've also tried to simplify the task for our production crew on Sunday (avoiding stage hosting, interviews, transitions and so on, leaving only break screen, casters, players, the game and sometimes the audience) which, as I think, helped a lot in terms of improving the broadcast.
Third: The way of scheduling which we had to follow was very specific: if match X should start on stage and is scheduled on time Y, it cannot start either off-stage or earlier - that was the requirement set from our Chinese partners and we were not able to ignore it. It means, that, for game X to start, we had to wait for HearthStone to be over (as we shared the same stage - we're clearly not able to set 4 separate stages at one place) and for players to set up no matter how huge the delay was. That's why we were sometimes grabbing games from B-streams which hurted Wardi/kaby a lot, or just waiting for an hour, as it was on Saturday, when we didn't have any additional games to grab.
Fourth: We also couldn't bring player PCs on stage during the first two days as we shared the stage with HearthStone and their PCs were different in terms of both hardware and basic software. On Saturday and Sunday it was easier because we were on stage for the whole second part of the day. Nevertheless we've done our best in order to make sure that this event was great for players and people in the venue, but our online viewer experience was indeed lacking.
I still hope that some of you enjoyed our event, especially the final day when everything went as smoonthly as possible. Thank you for your patience, see you next time!

The downtime was certainly annoying but I enjoyed the tournament nonetheless, thanks

"extremely mad" is a bit strong, but yes I admit to being quite annoyed at times.
I do have one other complaint/suggestion though: Try to get a dedicated observer next time. Not all casters did an equally great job at it, and that was quite annoying at times.
Anyway, all in all I enjoyed the matches when they were on and I'm sure you learned lots from the experience so that next time will go more smoothly.
To be super frank, I didn't really enjoy the tournament because of the production issues you've stated.
I mean, I don't blame you for having them or think that it's unreasonable that the event had problems, but they were there and it made the tournament rather awful to watch.
