I assume the situation got to him, like "I've surprised him with proxy on television, I've totally got this" and then he stopped thinking and went for drones.
That was just very poor micro... he should have hugged the minerals to get a mini choke and kill the spine. And then later on he just sacrificed his red zealots instead of pulling them back for some shield regen.
