Well well, it's been a while and I'm finally happy to announce my new tournament venture, SHOUTcraft Kings, which is directly sponsored by and partnered with Blizzard Entertainment. I've been thinking for a while now about what the Starcraft 2 scene could do better and my conclusion is, story-telling. Any sport lives or dies based on stories. Stories get people to tune in. Stories fuel the passion of the fans. Stories are the basis of competition. Storytelling can be tricky with a complicated system and so many different tournaments. It can be hard to keep track. I wanted to host a format in which it wasn't, something where the story could not be simpler.
Who is at the top of the mountain? How long can they defend it?
King of the Hill is that format. It's a little underused in Starcraft 2, which is a shame, because it's easy to follow and it naturally creates stories. Epic runs, surprise opponents, shock dethroning. I wanted to create something akin to WWEs Royal Rumble, but in Starcraft. Why do people watch that? For surprise entrants, long runs, big elimination streaks. It's exciting to tune in and be surprised. King of the Hill does all of that naturally and it's a compact, easy to follow format with month-to-month continuity.
We're going to do 20 maps in a one day event every month. Each map victory pays out $250 prize-money to the winner. The winner of the map becomes the King and will then play their next opponent. They will not know who that opponent is in advance, it will be a surprise to both them and the audience. If they keep winning, they keep playing and they keep getting paid. If they lose, they're out of that months event, to be replaced by the new King. That said, being King has its advantages. The King gets to choose the map. We use a 5 map pool from the ladder. Once a map is picked, it cannot be used again until the entire pool is exhausted. The King will choose the map and there are no vetoes.
I'm excited to bring you this event in close cooperation with Blizzard who will be providing the prizepool. We've been working on this idea for a number of months and we think it will provide something awesome to the online tournament scene and an entertaining event for the viewers. Join us on July 24th live for the first edition and on Youtube for spoiler-free VoDs. We will be revealing some of the players who will participate over the next month, but of course some will remain a mystery until they appear during the event.
Any chance for a side qualifier to get a shot at one of those invites? I'm sure you could outsource those qualifiers to Basetrade and have a good amount of signups/views

I'm thinking a qualifier for what is potentially a BO1 is not worth the effort in organizing. However, we will be actively looking at the results of online events in all regions as a reason for invites. Distinguish yourself in smaller events, get noticed, get an opportunity.

This is awesome to hear! Can't wait to watch the show
If you do 20 maps, it means you have 21 players in mind (let's forget about the additional life).
If the players don't know the orders in which they are supposed to play, that's going to be a long-ass wait
If they do, then I would feel slighted if I am supposed to be the player #21. It's actually possible that I don't play at all (because of the extra life rule). At most, I can pocket $250, while the first player can pocket $5000

Anyways, I like it a lot!
I think that answer to that is, "tough shit". They accept the conditions of the event when they accept the invite. If they don't want to, there are plenty more people who will gladly take the money. It's ridiculously good money for what they have to do and frankly right now I don't think all that many players can afford to be so picky.
Players will have a rough idea of when they're going to play. They're just not gonna know exactly, so they need to be around during a certain time period, which is not at all hard. Let's be honest after the nonsense with Clan Wars I've had quite enough of diva players not showing up, then having the audacity to complain that there isn't enough money in the scene anymore for them. Oh it's there, you're just not showing up to claim it, you're not acting like a professional so you won't be treated like one.
It's not like you can't practice while waiting. That's what they're supposed to be doing anyway, practicing.
As part of our effort to connect with other online events and build storylines, we'll be offering the winner of this months Olimoleague finals an invite to the first SHOUTcraft Kings event. Tune into Olimoleague to find out who will take the spot.
Holy Shit i'm so hyped for this! Sadly, sometimes i loose track of sc2 for a while but then i switch on a tourney like HSC and i remember why SC is one of the greatest games ever created This will be an event that i will watch for sure, i'm so hyped right now that im thinking about inviting some friends over to my place every month and have a big SC party. They all have played the game to some extend, but sadly never realy got into it to much (same as me... even though i love the game). This is a great, great format that will be easy to pick up for poeple "new" to the scene, because every match will be hyped as fuck and it will create stories and heroes out of thin air. I realy love the extra life rule, because that is prompted to create some drama.
Haven't watched sc2 in what feels like years. I'll try to tune in to this event because it has 2 of my favorite casters. Problem is that I will forget about it... 26 days left... oh well. I'll try to remember.
As the first Kings event closes in, we are building our roster which is looking to be a great mix of foreign and korean talent. If you are a pro-gamer and would like to apply for a spot in one of our KotH, please send me a private message via Teamliquid. All spots are invite-only and decided on a case by case basis based on what we think would be an entertaining lineup for a tournament. We will also be getting a couple of players for "standby" slots just in case we get any no-shows, so even if the roster is full we may be able to get you a spot for a shot at $250 per map in the biggest King of the Hill yet.
So we've been thinking a lot about how best to preserve players win streaks and give an eventual advantage to the current king. Our previous solution was to give the king an extra life after 3 wins, allowing them to lose once but remain king, assuming they did not lose to the same player twice. The problem with this system however is that in order to make it fair, we'd have to pay the winner of the match, whoever it might be. If the winner happens to be the challenger, who then has to play again, we end up without enough prize money to pay all 20 invitees (assuming they win to begin with). This would mean a scenario in which we'd have to bump somebody from the invite list, which would absolutely suck.
So I've decided to change the rules around a bit. Kings will no longer acquire an extra life. They will have to be on their toes all the time, since any loss will make them lose their throne. However, the current king can now choose the map from the map pool. There will be a 5 map pool which will reset upon exhaustion, so maps will be played 4 times per tournament. The king can choose any map that has not yet been used, so eventually, they may have to pick one that is disadvantageous to them once their favoured maps have been exhausted. This however does mean that the king has an edge against his challenger, while also ensuring that all of our invitees get to play.
Please bear with us, we will be trying to figure out the best way to do this tournament as the months go on, there may be further changes to the format. It's uncharted territory for us to do a King of the Hill of this type with this amount of money on the line.

Soooo hype, since when do Kespa players do any online stuff oO. Well I guess samsung does and some play TING or so, but still didn't expect big names. Also gonna be nice to see if innovation is really RIP or still has some skill but just not 100% atm.

I've to suppose that TB has a good relation with KeSPA, each Shoutcraft including Korean managed to have almost unreachable players. It's awesome to see talented people working together to produce some awesome content.

The top teams generally only allow players to play in online competition if they consider the organizer to be trustworthy. And also I guess the prize pool has to be right to get top players. KT and CJ basically don't play online tournaments at all, very few exceptions. TB is one of the few people who I've seen can get them for his online events.

It is a combination of factors. We built trust with Korean partners through Axiom and CranK is a major liason for us in South Korea. Various other SHOUTcraft events showed that we can do the job and are trustworthy. Blizzard backing also makes this a very safe bet for Korean teams. They know they'll get paid, they know the event will do well.
Years of work, some Blizzard magic and a bit of luck, is the answer I guess.
You ain't seen nothing yet, the full lineup for this event is maybe the most stacked online event you've ever seen, arguably better than the Sandisk events. It's going to be very exciting to reveal players during the event itself, I'm hoping it'll make it a must-watch.

but I don't know how to feel about revealing players during the event, I'd like to know the participants before the event. for viewership it might also be better so people don't miss their favourites are playing in this.

I'm super interested to see the rest of the players. Mostly from EU and KR though. NA basically has Scarlett and Neeb capable of competing (unless you include Hydra, Polt, etc.) I hope they can get some more really good ones from Korea, and EU has a wide pool of pretty good players.
With how SKT's been playing lately, everyone gets at least 50/50 against them
You give stephano 50-50 against INnoVation? Are you crazy? Inno took dark (the undeniable best zerg in the world) to a 3-2 series in GSL code A and you give STEPHANO a 50-50 vs him??

You're right. Stephano's a European Zerg so he should be better than the 60-40 scoreline from Dark

I'm still waiting for Neeb and or Scarlett to represent NA :S (Though I doubt it'll be announced before their match, as you said. ^_^)
And yeah, I understand, though the wording of the (pre-) announcement led me to believe it's a player considered top 5/ top 3 in the world, though even if not, it's sure the be a fantastic player ._.
Really looking forward to the event. Watched all the vods from the SHOUTcraft tournaments, going to watch the Kings live finally! But there is one thing I wander. How is the player order determined? Is it random, semi-random or manually determined?

now if (in some way) Zest decided to play in online tournament (and not being a disappointed like when he played in KFC) and dethrone all the Terran it would be good

Wouldn't be too surprising. He played in TB's last two online tourneys.
If a player manages to achieve 3 map victories in a row, they will receive an extra life. This allows them to lose one map and still stay in the tournament. Their opponent will receive the map winnings and will go on to play them again in order to dethrone them completely.
Does someone know why Polt did not get an extra life in the first tournament after defeating RagnaroK, Hydra and Kelazhur? He lost to Dear on his 4th map and was instantly dethroned.

Thought I'd watch the first couple of games but here I am three hours later cheering for Stephano... Absolutely love this tournament, great job everyone involved!!
Is there any way of supporting this for next month? Aside from watching I mean. :D

I really wonder how many games Innovation will win till his streak ends. I would assume that TB wants to "snipe" him with some koreans at the start (or rather play some koreans at the start, like last time) but Innovation will be hard to stop regardless.
Hyped for this, should be good! (if only it was this weekend, hehe)

If he's in good form and gets on a roll he could get 10 wins no matter how good the opposition, that's just how he works. But I think TB will have some players who can take him down. Especially Protoss players.

I wonder when TB will start introducing some non ladder maps? We all know he loves funky map's!!
Really looking forward to this. Last month was great, let's hope this month and the next 3 will be just as good if not better. It seems to be getting well supported so maybe the series may continue longer if sponsors continue their support.

Sure i am not saying that it was "ok" for these players/teams to put in that little effort while participating in the first place. Still, the bottom line is that maps you don't play anywhere else aren't really worth to practice for.

I think that's very exaggerated tbh. It's not Proleague, you don't have to spend days of practice making up elaborate snipe builds. Just enough so you understand the map well enough to not fuck up anything big. Which shouldn't take that long for progamers. You take Idk 3 hours of your practice for the entire week and just have fun with a silly map.
It's not like you "don't have to", there is simply no point to because it's not worth it. I mean sure i remember JD for example having no idea about certain map features, etc. That's disappointing to say the least and you obviously don't need to practice the map a lot to understand it on that basic lvl. I am not necessarily saying that your position ("it should be possible") is wrong, but we have seen what actually happens so it seems pointless to do it again. Rather play it safe and use known maps and get good games than getting bad ones because players didn't prepare for it. 3 hours of practice on maps you don't play anywhere else are still 3 hours of practice you don't get back for proleague, etc

I never said TB should try again. I just need to get through these posts without saying extremely rude things about the players involved while still stating my point.
Haha yeah i understand (was disappointed with JD for sure!)
Other than that i am already excited to see who is involved this time. With proleague playoffs going on i wonder if we see any SKT/KT/Jinair players other than Innovation (hopefully he actually shows up no matter what happens at KT vs SKT)
He'll try his hardest. I'm sure SKT and Jin Air would still allow players to play regardless of how KT vs SKT goes. I'm not quite sure with KT. We're the only team that skipped the first one while the other teams basically all sent their ace player, including Jin Air who had the same PL match coming up.

Proleague playoffs is different from round finals though. And iirc jinair was first in overall standings no matter what, so it didn't really matter all that much either. So i am not 100% sure that SKT/Jinair will be involved. KT seems rather unlikely though
I feel it was a bit too much tbh :D But nothing to really complain about so pls don't take it as such^^ Hyped for the event for sure, love the idea and execution so far!

Fuck yes, NatxTB cast last time was awesome. So hyped its crazy, been telling my GF I'm booked saturday and she's complaining that I'm turning into a sportjock xD
Mhh uthermal had 3/3 vs 2/2 and a 4th securing, i feel like just holding it there would have been enough to win instead of pushing out a little bit like he did and losing some libs

ByuN won the Olimoleague monthly to qualify for Shoutcraft, so he's not a surprise invite. But it's a nice touch that TB advertises the first match specifically.
As someone who watched his amazing run when it was going on, I cannot wait to have him back. If he made it back and resurrected his massive kill streak, I would be so happy.

Wow and here I thought it was a tad cheesy but apparently it's a deep cut reference. Seriously first the people on r/starcraft and now this, has none of you seen The Matrix or Ghost in the Shell? It's pretty obvious... and authentic.

I thought the Matrix thing was just numbers and I haven't seen Ghost in the Shell, but it makes more sense now so thanks for the explanation.

The Matrix, in a very blatant homage to GiTS, uses similar Japanese characters (as well as some mirrored numbers) for its intro animation and some later scenes. Timestamped video here.
Actually there are no "weakers". There is only few not very good players, but they can still win that one game. This system is even better than all-kill PL format xD

Yup. Also KT finally make their Shoutcraft debut. I'm not sure whether to be happy about that, or sad that the "KT never plays Kings" running gag is now dead.

KT will confirm the rumors and disband tonight so the meme can stay alive

Applies to every day of the week tho.
I guess, on weekends there is usually more time though, so it's not that easy to just stay at home and watch sc2 ^^ (in the free time) But yeah as i said, i hope vods will be out soonish

ShoutCraft kings played at Blizzcon ? That would be awesome (but not possible)
Yeah I don't think the 5 hours of Shoutcraft Kings fit into the Blizzcon schedule. Plus it would reaaaaally late for an announcement like that, I mean, it would be this weekend.
The announcement is obvious. TB is single-handidly going to save korean esports by rebooting Axiom and its arch nemesis Moixa. Both teams will recruit half the players that ended up teamless each and a $1m quadruple elimination bo69 league will begin the likes of which have never been seen before.
Taeja will also unretire and win singlehandidly with a 100-game winstreak.
Shoutcraft Empires. Players form a group of three, pick a civilization name from ancient rome and conquer each others territories on a rome total war map by playing 3v3's. They have to distribute resources across their territories so that resource rich regions start with minerals at higher values and lower resource territories mine out faster, so they can stack an advantage against teams they deem better than them.

Here some cumulative about shoutcraft kings blizzcon 2016 stats:
There we go, Nerchio [$4,500] now top winner with 12 wins (Mana [$1,250] still top win ratio with 83.3% tho). Zerg [$13,250] has put Protoss [$5,250] back to the last spot in both wins and win ratio. Euronics Gaming [$4,500] is now on 3rd place in the team ranking, heck 2nd when it comes to win ratio. And while Poland [$5,750] is "only" 2nd to Korea [$17,750] in wins, it takes the top place in win ratio.
Solar [$3,750] being a king means the 2nd one for Korea (and Asia), bringing his team Samsung Galaxy [$4,750] the first crown as king of the hill.
Overall, a very exciting event and ofc Stephano [$750] takes 1st place when it comes to banter :-)
Thanks for everyone involved for this entertaining event !
This tourney hit the spot in a most unexpected way. I always thought koth is a stupid format for anything that a local clan afternoon. The whole big talk about mystery players and all being at the host's mercy would also normally sound stupid.
But TB somehow makes it all sound like the absutely right thing. He just has natural talent for show. Will watch unless friends come visit that weekend.

Why not watch with friends?
actually some of them even played sc2 but i think when they travel 650 km, they'll probably want to see more of poland than our single room :-)
HerO's to be made one final TIME in the year in the year's hottest INnoVation. .Will the throne continue to be Solar powered or will a new king rise? soO exciting BaBy.
PS: I missed one out from it. but screw Nerchio anyway
thank god mech was made viable, or we wouldnt be watching this gem of a game, mech makes for the most awesome games ever this is just so action packed, loving it!
We also want to specify it was HerO (송현덕), former TL player and current Team Revolution player, who did not show to SHOUTcraft Kings December and had to be replaced last minute, NOT herO (김준호) who used to play for CJ Entus. Unfortunately people have been expressing their disappointment to the wrong person, so we hope to clarify this misunderstanding.
