Making this thread a little early because FUCK YA CANADA.
Rumor has it Scarlett has barely played any LotV, but her mechanics alone should let her beat the lesser players for the other teams. Desrow with all due respect isn't the strongest player but he does abnormally well in these Nation Wars so we'll see what he can do. It might all come down to Huk, most of the weight is on his shoulders. I don't have a ton of hope we'll advance but I'll still be cheering.
Lookin at the polls k just see a bunch of hosers voting. Take off eh?
(For real these are some great teams, and iirc Mexico elimated us from nationwars II. Entonces es la hora para pagar antes amigos. O como se dice "payback time?")
All teams have a chance, but I definately think Harstem can all kill any of the teams.
It looks to me like Denmark has the worst chance of getting out, since all we have is Bunny, and he hasn't been doing so well lately. He can still all kill, but if he loses, I don't see the rest of the team doing much.
Interesting group, none of the strongest teams (imo that's obviously Korea, then Poland, Germany and France) but every one has a chance. Looking forward to seeing Harstem play, this tournament thus far has been a nice scene for the in-form players to show their strength.

I agree with your classement. But to be fair, we need to see the others players in action. The results are so volatile... Maybe Harstem will all kill and be the new hype etc.. And in one month maybe a european will find a way to beat Nerchio etc... And we will need to see Bly vs Mlord to be sure that France > Ukraine. I am not convinced at all by Lilbow and Stephano...
It will be so nice if NW4 was with 4 players (decided by ladder ranking ?), and no extra life for the ace. One man carying a country feel silly...

I'd like that, it would promote countries with depth. I understand that the extra life is some protection against bo1 volatility but as you said - the teams become too ace-dependant. Proleague format would also work nicely.
Still with four players the same teams would look the strongest. HyuN, Tefel, GunGFuBanDa, PtitDrogo, make them a team and it would be one of the strongest in this tournament

Canada advance? I expect Major to all kill.
Huk is one of the worst "progamers" from a mechanical perspective. There is no way he can win in a macrogame as he is (unintentionally) missing so many workers that you would think he was coached by Happy. Also, his micro isn't anything extraordinary.
And Scarlett - based on her showmatch vs HUK - has no idea how to play LOTV. And then there is Desrow who should have no chance vs Major.
I feel like if you open Stargate against this build it would be best to wait for the Oracle and a Phoenix and just figure out which mineral line the Cyclone is guarding and simply lift the Cyclone and have your Oracle destroy the mineral line

that's like one of these Z vs Skytoss games in HotS were Protoss would look like they were fine for 15 minutes of deflecting hydralisk attacks and then at some point they just die out of the blue

They are crap in ZvZ. Lurkers hardcounter them so ridiculously and since frenzy doesn't prevent abduct anymore you can just pull them 1-by-1 while kiting backwards with roach/hydra to begin with. Not to mention that they are really badly equipped to fight alongside of roaches to begin with and get stucked whenever the opponent repositions/kites.

I didn't compare their skill levels. Just their standing. desRow is GM but mostly active as a personality rather than a player. And Rotti was the first personality in a tournament I came up with.

I think it depends. What he has shown here was a "small mech push" which I think is not a very good idea in TvT because the defender's advantage against a straight push is too big and the mech advantage is not really much. Then there is the defensive slow mech, which is still really strong, but with the ever increasing options to circumvent defenses, it's very difficult to get there.

uThermal has thrown away too much stuff with questionable results while not securing a big enough part of the map with scattered buildings. wikipedia tells me that it origins from German sailors that called their Oceanic colleagues Kanake, which in Hawaiian means "Human" and was originally positive. But yeah, these days it is used for all sorts of - usually Southern European - immigrants in Germany/Austria (don't know about Switzerland) and very negative.

You never commit to a frontal assault vs infestors and ultras on creep. uThermal's biggest mistake was not being ByuN.
Tbh I don't see why anyone would think 8 armor Ultras are a good design choice, it's either imbalanced as fuck or requires specific hardcounters like Ghosts that require insane control and still get fungaled and get their channel interrupted and become useless.
Jona should have made an evo chamber when he realized scarlett had no gas. You just drop into the main, bypass the queens and spines and take out the main base.

Agreed, but dealing with the medivacs was good play by scarlett (other than the one he flew over infested terran lol), didn't seem to have much to do with balance. Like, don't get me wrong, ultras might be a bit bonkers with 8 armor. But I didn't think that was the absolute deciding factor in that game as much as losing like 6 full medivacs was.

I'm not balance whining, I just don't like the way TvZ is forced to be played currently. I said he lost too many medivacs because that was indeed ultimately where uThermal lost the game.
For sure. I wasn't meaning to disagree with you there. More disagreeing with uthermal's tweet. Sorry about the confusion, I should have clarified.

welll, if you have 5 bases vs 2 bases as Terran against zerg with any reasonable army and his ultras just popped you should win by basetrade 99% of the time.

Disclaimer not meant as a balance argument, just that this wasn't the situation in the game between Scarlett and uThermal:
He was rocking a lot of liberators and a lot of ghosts and a lot of tanks.

You never commit to a frontal assault vs infestors and ultras on creep. uThermal's biggest mistake was not being ByuN.
I mean before Ultras are out, the game is not that different from HotS, terren can hit before infester ultra comes out. I feel that uThermal spent too much money on tanks, libs and drops, when he could have hit a strong 2-2 timing.

liberators only work when you can force a fight under them which is rarely possible vs a good zerg. Ghosts are extremely hard to control in addition to you bio.

He won't ever kill the Zerg doing that, at best he would trade, and that would just mean that he ends up in a hive tech situation for sure. The reason why dropping is a good idea is because he can greatly hinder Scarlett's economy so she can't get to the hive tech army, without risking the game as much. Medivacs aren't commited most of the time and can get out unscathed, while the Zerg is forced to run around the map, besides, it is almost impossible not to take damage as the Zerg player.

Well I had liberators so I thought I could win the fight but I slightly misplaced the circles and so the ultras could circumvent them and kill my bio.

First time I hear Tanks, Ghost and liberators are all tier 1 units... What should he have build? Battlecruisers?
If they gave back 2010-2011 snipe would that be an improvement do you think? I feel like the reason it was nerfed is because it countered mass broodlord and mass ultra so well. But as we learned in 2012 with broodlords, and now with ultras, being able to mass those things isn't necessarily good for the game.

That would be imbalanced, it was wayy too effective and Zerg has no counter.

Idra was pretty strong when he came from Korea but declined afterwards. I think it showed for TLO once or twice when he went there to improve. Naniwa and MaNa also come to mind.

Lilbow never went to Korea but you're right, most of the time it doesn't work. You could add ThorZain to that list.
HuK for sure came back stronger after practicing in the oGsTL house. Didn't his 2 kills in GSTL come a month or two before the Summer of HuK?
But yeah overall I can't think of other examples. Idra didn't come back stronger, nor TLO, don't think State has improved too much so far as I know either.

USA beats Germany and Netherlands: Down 7 Gets 4th in Gold Cup: Up 5
I saw someone explain the multipliers by event once. I think it was like beating the 100th ranked team in a tournament or qualifier is worth the same number of points as beating the #1 ranked team in a friendly. so basically friendlies are irrelevant and beating up on a couple of scrubs before losing in a tournament is worth a decent number of points

You rekt us so hard before our own European Championship in 2008. Our team was so bad back then, and it didn't help that we had a retarted coach who literally said he would not nominate the best players, but the right ones, because so many of our best couldn't work with him...
Well tbh the french national coach for example expelled players like Nasri from the squad because they were "toxic" and france did pretty well in the last WC.

I'm German, and Belgium being #1 in the world hurts me :/
FIFA ranking has always been crap, it's irrelevant.

Austria aka Team Alaba is doing fine now though.
Arnautovic just rekt Chelsea and we got a few other good ones as well like Junuzovic . And then there is that guy that just debuted for Real, maybe he can make it till the Euro...
Though to be fair Chelsea is just asking for it this season. And Alaba is the best player by quite a wide margin.

Alaba is great, but I feel like there are really some other good players these days in the Austrian Team. And it really helps that we don't have an Austrian coach for once, as Marcel Koller is not bound by tradition or club pressure to put half of rapid's and austria's lineups into the nationalteam and will just freely nominate all the good players instead.

Just looking at Nasri's face gives me irritable bowel symptom so no wonder about his teammates.

Austria has a pre great team tbh. Dragovic, Baumgartlinger, Fuchs, Junuzovic are all players that would have been the "star" of the austrian team 10 years ago, now they have quiet a lot of decent players and obviously alaba is world class.
By the way MajOr's twitter handle is something with Light now so he's serious about it this time! For sure. Maybe. Uh, let's talk about that in a few months I guess.
It's apparently "TeamKentuckyChickenNightAndSM" which I can't see how should be offensive, but I am definitely not very good int this ofense-taking business.

Maru's already pretty damn good in LotV. But I don't see what SpaceMarine was going for here anyway, IMO you need colossi and disruptors (and later storm). He just went stalker/disruptor like it's PvP.

From what State said on his stream, in PvT most Koreans go Colossus->Storm or heavy Gateway with late Storm. They add a couple of Disruptors later but don't rely on them.

SpaceMarine has never had enough Disruptors on the field to really respect them. Major can just focus them before the ball explodes.
Well, I'm also thinking about crazy drop play everywhere. The attention alone that the protoss needs to fire and micro the disruptor balls without blowing up his own mineral line and zealots...

Oh yeah, also this. Polt once said on stream that in his opinion adept/stalker/immortal (with blink and resonating glaives) beats pure bio.

It is a little perplexing tbh. Usually you only get one and you're purely defensive with it while getting an expansion.
I've encountered these marine/cyclone pushes for a while. Even late beta. Generally you do it when your opponent isn't going cloak banshee as a reaper follow up.

Did you guys even watch Austria games? I surely doubt it. Austria always played bad when he didn't play. Has been more MotM than Alaba too
Junozovic is important to the team and he's certainly a very good player, but there is no debate to be had about him being a better player than Alaba. Not only did I watch a few games of the austrian national team, I'm also a fan of Werder Bremen and have been watching Junozovic pretty consistently over the last 3 years. His freekicking and corners are top top top level, but other than that he's a good midfielder who always seems to be willing to play his heart out for the team. But he doesn't possess any particular outstanding qualities.
Alaba on the other hand is arguably the best fullback in the world, he's lightning fast, his technique is incredible especially for a defender, his positioning defensively has improved a lot over the last 2 years (I guess Lahm is mentoring him on that) and consistently impresses on Champions league leve.

Alaba isn't even playing as a fullback for Austria hahaha Man with that sentence alone you just proved you didn't watch a single game. XD
I played a TvT on ladder yesterday where the guy got a minor lead going into the midgame. He was so nervous about me doom dropping to get back into/win the game he built literally 8+ turrets. Turns out you can just push into his front since he had like no marines.

And his name was avilo?
Possibly a student of the man himself.
My favorite TvT yesterday was on Ulrena and I opened 3 reapers into cloak banshee where the reapers killed like 10 workers and the cloak banshee basically the rest and he claimed the only reason he lost as because his bunker was off 1 hex (wasn't even part of a wall) or it would have been "a free win."

Did you respond by telling him you realized that he fucked up his bunker placement and just took the freewin?

Honestly my build on Ulrena for TvT is straight-up tank pushing off of 1 or 2 bases. They never see it coming because drops are so good on the map.

I wonder if you can open Ghost in LotV now that Ghosts have a base speed increase. It would help them now that they're faster than Banshee and with the speed + range they could kite marines as well. Maybe like a Ghost/Hellion opening composition.

Sounds pretty all-in considering how expensive ghosts are.

Yeah the problem I'm having is that you couldn't do much outside of defend stuff but I don't see how you'd put on offense.
I just want to open Ghosts again. Cloak Ghost first TvP was my jam in WoL.

I did see Theo play Demuslim on stream the other day with the whackiest turtle play. He opened to 3 bases rather quickly mainly hinging on photon cannons and pylons for defense. He then slowly crept the map with cannons while teching into a ton of Tempest then eventually Tempest + HT. He also was really, really on point with his few Oracles constantly dropping Revalation. It seemed extraordinarily frustrating to play against.
I don't know what he was really hoping to do with those SCV. It is hard to use grenades when you'll friendly fire so many of your own SCV if you get into an SCV vs SCV+Reaper battle.
I think if you open Oracle these days you don't HAVE to run it in to kill SCVs. With Revelation and Status they add some utility to your army. I feel trading it off for 2 SCV is just a terrible idea.

trading an oracle for 2 SCVs seems like a terrible idea regardless of the expansion

I don't think it would ever make sense tactically let alone economically. You need 1 medivac per tank so if you're tying up your port with Viking production you'll be extremely low on medivac numbers. Which means you couldn't reposition your own tanks. So even if they'd lose all their medivacs it wouldn't matter because they'd still obtain better positioning with their tanks. I think it would also make defending doom drops awkward since if you're out of position with your vikings you'd just lose the entire base. A big part of defending dooms is just boosting your tanks over to kill marines and they're dropping.
Rotti is a good man, forfeiting his spot for more deserving players was great and he found just the right amount of Dutch patriotism for the international stream.
So between Poland, Ukraine and Canada all advancing first from their groups, I think the secret to success is having an Acer player on your team. Inno is former Acer so I'll give Korea the advantage in Group D
