MAL presents: Smallest Map Possible is an online tournament organized by MAL, aka James the Translator from WCS 2013 S3 Finals, 2014’s S2 and S3, all circuits of Red Bull Battle Grounds, and IEM Toronto, and sponsored by Psistorm Gaming and 2LD. Online tournament sometimes lacks the live atmosphere. It also has difficulty reaching out to the players to hear their thoughts. The tournament will feature all players’ webcams and microphones to see reactions in the midst of a battle and to hear more from the players during the map vetoes and pre/post game interviews. Have you ever wondered if a player is close with his/her opponent? Were you ever curious why map vetoes happened in the fashion that it did? Have you cursed or screamed out of joy in middle of a game and wondered if the players did too? This is the tournament that will educate you on all your wonders, or at least attempt to.
MAL presents: Smallest Map Possible is a meta breaking tournament. The current meta consists of big maps which leads to one big bang with few minor battles here and there. By bringing old and small maps, the tournament seeks to answer and showcase how the current understandings of games would translate if that was then.

Looks fun!
OP says 6pm GMT, while Liquipedia says 6am GMT, which is right? I'm assuming 6am because 6pm is middle of the night in Korea.

Just because something ended up being bad at the time doesn't mean it's bad when you have new units and a new meta. Early SC2 Steppes vs late SC2: HotS Steppes. Different games.

If the intent of this tournament is to break the meta, I think Steppes is fair game.

While Steppes might be small and different from current maps, it's not actually a good map. The map pool used here is infinitely better and I would even say it is better than the current ladder map pool (funny how that works Blizz).

I feel like Im gonna be glued to my seat while watching this tournament, I really love small maps because they make for the most interesting and agressive matches, what a great idea to put together a tournament like this!
|
It was a travesty that Steppes of War didn't make the dream pool. The most famous sc2 map ever probably (or infamous). It exemplified the craziness that dream pool was about. Here is the perfect opportunity to right that wrong and it's getting missed.

I like this tournament. I like MAL. I like his and Catz's casting. But I'm having a really hard time enjoying the viewing experience with the production issues I'm seeing. Catz is consistently too quiet, the video stuttered progressively further, both of them would randomly go into robo autotune voice, and the picture quality blurs a lot when the camera is moved. I feel like MAL could use some upgrades to his broadcasting setup.

I am so sorry. Something weird intervened. During testings everything was fine. Then came the match fixers, then came what appeared to be DDoS based off of players' analysis on what was happening. I am not too sure what caused it and I did not know exactly how to deal with it. It really is all my fault for not being able to handle the situations properly. I am working on reinstalling game itself, and OBS as well. I am doing all I can to catch what caused this issue and hope tomorrow is flawless and smooth as the previous "MAL presents" series. Once again, I am so sorry I ruined your experience.

From the player's side, it wasnt TOO bad said the players. It seemed to be me just lagging hard on my own with minor sprinkled droppage in game every now and then. Regardless, I am so sorry that it's caused. I am doing all I can to prevent/fix the situation.

No problem dude. Hope you can fix it and thank you for this great tournament. Great line up

Since you are not going for a balanced map pool and most of the maps haven't been used in premier tournaments in a long while, why not go one step further and use community maps? Here is a thread with a list of somewhat recent community maps sorted by category, and with the upcoming TLMC5 there are new maps created every day. I'd like to think this might also get more viewers, but tournaments never use community maps so I have no idea if that's actually true.
Just a thought.

I love being able to hear from players and see him joke around with them. But yeah his casting isn't that great. Maybe he will improve. I feel it might be a cultural thing with the excited shoutcasting and that it doesn't translate well in English. I have the same issues when Dragon and Breaker cast.

I hope that with this knowledge there will be an effort to make sure that these bettors are not fiddling with our scene. I liked the suggestions TB made in his post. Probably out of frustration that our player was harassed by Korean betters in the Smallest Map Possible tournament yesterday, which affected his performance and there are questions as to who is funding that event.
But yeah we should restrain from grabbing the pitchforks on a specific tournament until evidences come up. Then we'll have our fun I guess.

The community is prone to witch hunts. Lets try to be self aware.
Regardless of where the money is coming from for this tournament, I think Mal should promote his sponsors a little bit more. I had to go digging to find any mention of who is putting up the money at all. How can they consider this efficient marketing if the viewers can't even figure out what products are being sold?
I know Mal doesn't get ad revenue from Twitch (unless that changed since his last tournament) so he must rely on pleasing sponsors to be able to host tournaments at all.
Sponsors(?)?
-PSH company Hunting safari company? -PSISTORM gaming -2LD (he links to 2ld.info but it won't load for me) -DSP design (processors I think)
