Just googled it, and it seems to be a form of internship. Most educational institutes offers paid and unpaid internships, and many companies will hire interns for 3-months. These 3-month stints are usually just errand-boy positions though, and won't give you any real responsibilities.

Probably won't get you too far by itself. A lot of foreigners come here. We turn away Engineers. Experience and knowledge will do you best. I dont wanna do oil :D

By law in Canada any job that employs you for more than 3 months means that company must employ you full time or let you go. That is why interns here last only 3 months, unless you are under contract.
