Everyone. Deep down. Sometimes very deep down.
That's not to say that everyone always cheers for the underdog of course that is not what I meant.

(like there is no other left to cheer for) Could be his gameplay for example. There are still some people out there, who value gameplay while selecting their favorite in a gaming tournament. Sounds absurd, does´nt it? Don't be silly, Naniwa is as much a marketed personality as any streaming ladder hero, only he has taken the role of heel rather than hero. There is a reason people talk as much or more about his twitter bullshit wars than about his games. Innovation is a player you root for if you like results and good play but don't care about personality. It isn't usually the Naniwa fans who are constantly harping on about all the drama surrounding him... I dunno about that. Naniwa fans bitched for weeks after Zealousy did that Naniwa article for Blizzcon. And then in the Blizzcon video interview with Naniwa he said word for word exactly what Zealousy wrote.

Lastly, it's definitely the underdog thing. My favourite players are Life, Jaedong, Scarlett, Soulkey, but I find myself cheering for the underdog now and then.

You can´t just mark the fanbase of the player as one-dimensional just because that is the way you see him. Yes, he is involved in a lot of stuff. That does´nt change the fact, that he shows entertaining games since 2010 and gained quite some fans because of that in the last 4 years.

It isn't usually the Naniwa fans who are constantly harping on about all the drama surrounding him... "Fans" in a loose sense here, I'm fairly sure a fair amount of people who follow Naniwa do it for the drama and the bullshit. You may be someone who is a fan of him purely because of his play, but I'm reasonably sure you are a minority. Every time he pulls some new stunt or does well in a tournament the entire conversation is a pissing contest between people who dislike his style and those who find his abrasive attitude attractive. His play is rarely, if ever, brought up. He is as much a personality as Incontrol, only he is still really good at SC2.

I mean I love Grubby exactly for the reasons you just mentioned, but I don't have any attachment to other foreign players just because I happen to like Grubby. Most of my favorite streamers are Koreans. Crank and Polt in particular are every bit as interactive with their chat as any of the foreigner streams that I watch. So using that as the catch all reason is a bit disingenuous. My reason for liking players as much as I do is for their gameplay above everything else, the personality and interactivity with their stream is just a plus.
