- KR/TW Qualifier thread *COMING SOON*

With Intel Extreme Masters Cologne coming up in February, it's time for the participants to be determined. Eight players will have the Chance to qualify online again!

Three of the best players from Europe and Africa will qualify for Cologne alongside (T)HeRoMaRinE the newly crowned German champion. You must advance through 2 stages to do so. See how below.

Restrictions

  • You must be located in Europe or Africa at the time of either Stage 1 or Stage 2 to be eligible to compete in the qualifiers.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age by January 28th 2014 ( the date of the LAN event)
  • Hotel and flight cost are paid for in full by ESL.
  • Be well aware that Germany might require an up to date visa to enter the country.

SCHEDULE

Stage 1: Saturday, Jan 18 11:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)
Stage 2: Sunday, Jan 19 11:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)

STAGE 1
Top 4 players will advance to Stage #2!

The map pool for the qualifiers will be the new WCS/ladder map pool released soon and will include the following maps:
Alterzim Stronghold
Frost
Habitation station
Polar Night

Heavy Rain

+ Show Spoiler [Map Selection Rules] +
Best of 3 in all rounds. Once the semi-finals round is reached the matches end, and the 4 players then move to stage #2.

A map veto (removal and pick) system is used. The high seeded player on the grid starts. Players take it in removing maps until only one remains in a best of 1 or until only 3 maps remain in a best of 3. Then each player picks a map. Maps are played in order they are picked. The remaining map is played last.

So in order to sign up, you need a premium account? Is this to keep the low level players out?

It isn't that difficult to earn a Premium Account, btw
I used to organize tournaments for ESL Italy and referee Go4SC2s, WCSs, and IEMs for ESL SC2.

We've had some changes!

Both days will now start at 12:00 to accommodate for the Nation Wars tournament and players.

The first few players for stage 2 are also confirmed:
(Z)TLO
(T)Happy
(P)StarDust
(P)Welmu

Also to confirm that the new mappool used in WCS and Ladder will also be used for the qualifier.

It still is nice that Africa can compete, it might boost the scene there. And also there are a lot of African players leaving in Europe. Anyways good luck to all the players

So they get second chances and we don't? Seems a bit strange not to have a unified format.

Last 4 players are now decided for stage 2.

(T)ForGG
(Z)VortiX
(P)HasuObs
(Z)Nerchio

To answer questions relating to the stage 1 qualifier, we've just always run it as single elimination and it's never really caused any complaints.

Brackets with the seeded players are now available: here

Streams will be announced tomorrow!

Well this comment looks sad now in retrospect

Looking forward to the games today, there are a lot of good players signed up for today. And Apollinaris are casting, which is great

Exactly... How do you split units perfectly against this? If you do he just takes 2 medivacs from one place to another and you die. Wp JJakji

So Elfi has to beat two terrans to qualify. We get to see more of Elfi's logic-defying PvT.

Sniper is the winner people repress, Jjakji is the guy everyone just forgot. It's really strange how long he was flying below the radar after winning the GSL. Usually when players are gone from the limelight that long, they just kind of fade away quietly.

I didn't see the game, but if it worked the opponent threw away a large part of his army. If they aren't maxed by then, they are the disgusting ones

It was a dragged out immortal sentry all in, he just kept warping in sentries and got more immortals and sat outside zerg base dancing back and forth a bit when Zanster baited out force fields. No protoss units dies tho if you just control it good while you pick off a few units here and there with force fields, and after a while the army was big enough to just charge in to kill a 200 supply zerg. I don't understand why more protoss players don't do this. Stardust was very good at abusing this, but he's one of the few who does it.

If this was the case... that you could just do this all the time, then all P should have 100% winrate.

Nothing disgusting about it. Harstem played a fantastic game. He was taking advantage of fake pressure and punished Z for not teching and kept his cool. It wasn't only about the tech either - there were no counter-attacks to Harstem's base and very little force-field baiting, which are things Zerg absolutely has to do when facing this kind of 2-base all-in using only a roach/ling composition and a somewhat low drone-count.

If Zerg is only going to mass roaches and lings, Z has to drain energy and repel the attack using multiple flank-attack-retreat moves or employ counterattacks. There was not enough of this in this game, even if the Zerg played very well also. You can't allow the Protoss to build msc/immo/sentry/zealot army value beyond 140/200 and expect to have a fair chance in a straight up fight with only 200/200 roaches and lings vs msc/immorta/sentry/zealot. As Protoss approaches 170/200 and 200/200, it's basically impossible to win as Zerg. Harstem's final death blow was at 170/200 medium-tech P vs 200/200 low-tech Z. If you know SC2, you know that Protoss is very likely to win and should win this scenario.

There's more to the game than just '17 min 2base all in'. Harstem's play worked because he called Zerg out on the low-tech army and responded just the way you have to. He was being patient and cool about it, more than a lot of other Protoss players would have been. And the Zerg was not ready for just that.

I second this. It's brilliant to get this kind of in depth analysis. It's much appreciated. (I also liked Apollo watching the replay of Mana vs Patience to analyse Patience's decisions).

Yes, he did go trhough the first qualifier without dropping a map. San is the first one to feel his wrath.

There are probably a lot of fun theological debates we could have with elfi's divinity. Are elfi and (action)jesus two different entities or one?

Best of the worst for sure. Poland beat the French for best audience. Sure they had some good League backup but they brought it.

Not really. Flash was playing from behind that whole game since his proxy factory play failed.

I am sure that if we looked at resources lost, they were probably even or Jjakji ahead. And even if Jjakji was slightly behind he was still ahead in economy. First he had a faster third and then a faster 4th base and was never harrased at all until that deciding fight.

I am not saying that Elfi played bad but by "getting protossed" I mean when terran does everything right for first 20-25 minutes of the game, even gets vikings, ghosts (right counters), slows down protoss economy etc. but still loses that 1 fight and everything snowballs from there, no chance of comeback at all. He also wasn't that behind on upgrades since it was 2-2 vs. 3-3. You can't really beat protoss to 3-3

I feel like protoss can always come back as long as you get maxed and have chance to drop 2-3 good storms.

Well maybe our definitions of getting protossed are bad.

for me to get protossed the protoss needs to have collossi storm and tempests which elfi didn't have but sora did

The way I look at it is when terran slowly builds up advantage during the game and it all goes down the drain in 1 fight without the chance to come back.

Blizzard, Kespa, ESF and all the WCS-subsidiaries should write a 38 page dictionary defining every one of these words and if a player or caster is found to have misused one they get fined.

Ok, thanks. Will have to try it out sometime.

I usually just leave 6 in main and then start rallying to natural, but kinda sucks if 2 oracles come :D

Look at it this way:
Dear vs. Maru on Frost - not an example of getting protossed since Dear never took any real damage and Maru was never ahead in tech or economy

Elfi vs. Jjakji on Frost - example of getting protossed since Jjakji was trading well, he denied Elfi's third, he had higher tech units and wasn't stuck on bio for the whole game but then he lost that fight and it was gg

He plays WCS in AM. But he resides in Europe and is eligible for the IEM EU qualifiers.

According to aligulac, he is stilll quite behind on that regard. Tefel has about 2,2k tournament games, Nerchio has above 3,3k, GoOdy above 3,2k, Bly above 3k and Kas close to 3k.

Unfortunately (P)Welmu messaged me earlier that he had some personal issues come up and won't be able to play tomorrow.

I attempted to contact all 4 losing players from the Ro8 to play out their part of the bracket. Unfortunately (Z)SortOf was too tired to continue and (P)VERDI did not respond.

(Z)Kane played vs (P)elfi for the slot and won 2-0. So he will directly take Welmu's seed and play vs (P)BabyKnight in the first round tomorrow.

He just really hates playing through the lower bracket.

Such a strange game from hasu... he expanded but never went above 50 probes... at first I though he will do a 2 base colossus timing but then he suddenly took a third after 5 minutes of not producing probes.

I don't think you can hold the 2 base all-in as a Protoss if you go heavy into phoenixes. Jjakji saw the build and just ran over Hasu's defence.

Muta switch can be good against mech.
It's just that happy builds three thors to every siege-tank so maybe he's not the best player to fight with mutas.

Congrats Mana! Really happy for him, I hope a team picks him up and he appears in new colours at IEM.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.
