I understand how ddos is viable against a website but why does it work here? I mean it can't be many ip's that need to be accepted for an event like this to work. Why isn't everything else just shut out? I'm sure I'm missing something here.

It would probably be enough to publish his name+address on reddit and scare him out of doing stuff.
