WCS KR Season 3 Finals – Zerg vs Protoss, Will there be a Royal Roader? The first SKT Zerg to make a finals, soO versus Dear, dreaming of walking the Royal Road. The finals of the last season of WCS KR for the year are right in front of us. 1020 days after his debut, Dear has finally made it to his first finals. In the finals, he meets soO who, 1843 days after his debut, will also contest the first finals of his career. This is a particularly significant final for both players. If Dear is able to win, he becomes the second GSL Royal Roader after Life. soO’s team, SKT1, has produced a lot of finalists but no Zergs. soO will step on to the stage for these finals, aiming to undo the Han (a Korean concept meaning unresolved resentment, unavenged injustice, a collective feeling of oppression or lamentation!) of the SKT1 Zergs. Dear vs Zerg 66.7% Last 5 matches vs Zerg L W W W L soO vs Protoss 63.6% Last 5 matches vs Protoss L W L W W ![]() On his way to the finals, Dear defeated Supernova, DRG, Trap, Maru and others and showed us incredible skills. In particular, he defeated both Soulkey and Sleep in Group A of the Round of 16 to show his dominance in the PvZ matchup before beating team-mate Trap and the reigning WCS KR champ Maru on his path toward the championship. Dear has shown strong oracle play in the early game, and soO’s ability to withstand these attacks will play a critical role on the series. Since it’s his first finals, his ability to perform on this stage will also play a critical role. ![]() soO defeated Yongwha, Super and Parting on his path to the finals and showed us his incredible PvZ. After losing in the Ro16 in WCS KR S1, and then again in WCS KR S2, it looked like he might have some trauma about the Ro16 but this season he has been solid and has made it through to the finals. soO has consistently faced Protoss’s on his way to the finals. In the Ro32, Yongwha and Super was in his group, and then again Super was in his group in the Ro16. In the Ro 8 he had to face yet another Protoss in parting, and after losing the first map he won 3 straight and claimed a dominant score of 3:1. soO, much like Dear, is in his first finals but seems to constantly be overflowing with confidence, and looked at ease at the media day held on the 17th. soO is showing strength with roach-wars and the late-game, but it will be interesting to see whether he can take this confidence into his play in the finals. What follows here is an analysis of the maps, in the order that they’ll be played, for the PvZ match up. The earlier maps favour the Protoss, so the map order will favour Dear. Since the maps become Zerg favoured as the series goes on, who wins the first map may have a big bearing on the winner of the series. Map 1: Frost - Protoss (71.4%) 5 : 2 Zerg (28.6%) In the first map, Protoss’s have a huge win-rate of 71.4%. soO did lose to Super on this map, but since we don’t have any PvZ’s on this map for Dear, this will likely be a striking clash between the two players. Both players are aware of how much the first map matters, and because of that, this map is likely to be fiercely contested. Because the map is so large, we might see soO’s strong late-game come into play on this map. Map 2: Akilon Wastes - Protoss (55.3%) 26:21 Zerg (44.7%) In the 2nd map, Protoss’s are showing a slightly higher win-rate than Zerg’s. However, if you only look at the last 5 PvZ’s, Zergs have won the last 5 straight. This is a map where we see the late-game often, and because of that it’s hard to predict clearly who will win. Map 3: Polar Night – Protoss 45.5% 5:6 Zerg (54.5%) Unlike the preceding 2 maps, Zergs have a slightly higher win-rate on this map. Zergs have won the last 3 PvZ’s on this map, which gives soO the edge. soO also defeated Super on this map, while we don’t have any games for Dear. Map 5: Whirlwind - Protoss (44.6%) 37:46 Zerg (55.4%) Zergs are doing better than Protoss’s historically on this map, and this doesn’t change if you only look at recent matches. In particular, soO beat Parting in the 4th map to take the series 3:1 in their quarter-final this season, showing that he knows how to win on this map. Map 5: Yeonsu – Protoss (46.2%) 6: 7 Zerg (53.8%) Although the win-rate being higher for Zergs seems to favour soO, we don’t have any games for soO on this map. In contrast, Dear has a 2:1 record against Zergs on this map, making a tightly contested game likely. Map 6: Belshir Vestige – Protoss (70.5%) 31:13 Zerg (29.5%) We can clearly say that this is a map for Dear. Protoss’s have been downright dominant on this map, and they’ve won the last 9 PvZ’s straight. If the series goes to 6 maps, this is a map that is must-win for Dear. Map 7: Derelict Watcher – Protoss (41.7%) 5 : 7 Zerg (58.3%) If the 6th map was for Dear, this one is for soO. If we go to the full 7 maps, soO will have the edge going in to the final game. Derelict Watcher isn’t just good for Zergs overall, Zergs have won the last 4 PvZ’s on this map consecutively. The finals will be held on the 19th at 7pm at AX Hall. | ||
