lichter's notes: I am currently writing a FAQ for LR threads, to be included at the bottom of each LR. Mostly I want it to address questions regarding LR threads, as well as questions about becoming LR OPs. Please look through the FAQ and PM me with ideas to improve it. TY!
Volunteer! All you have to do is check if there's already a thread for the tournament, or if anyone is scheduled to make the thread. If there isn't a thread and no one is scheduled to do it, you can become the LR OP! We are always looking for new people to help out, especially for WCS AM and EU.
Being the LR thread OP is hard work, but it's also fulfilling. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people check the LR thread every day, and it is a valuable resource to the community. It's a simple way of supporting SC2, the game we all presumably love :p
Now that I've decided to be a LR OP, what do I do? + Show Spoiler +
Next, read up a little on bbcode and familiarize yourself with it. It helps to look at the code for previous LR OPs.
Finally, check your schedule. Are you SURE you'll be around for the duration of the tournament? Are you sure you'll be able to update in a timely manner?
If everything checks out and you've done all of the above, all you have to do is make the thread!
Where can I find previous LR OPs, as well as LR resources? + Show Spoiler +
LRing is tough work, and only a handful of people do it regularly. The most famous ones are Shellshock and The_Templar, but occasionally other people (such as packrat, Yello, etc) do it as well. If no one is available to do it, then there is no LR. Again, we need more volunteers. Anyone who watches games regularly and types really, really fast has qualifications to become an LRer.
All you have to do is write out what happens during the game. It doesn't need to be complete, but it should be a good summary of the entire game. Supply counts, timings, build orders, and major events are typically what receive priority in LRs. You can read more LRs by Shellshock and The_Templar for a better idea of how to do it.
Can I submit a new banner, player photos, or other images? + Show Spoiler +
Yes! We encourage creativity in LR threads, so if you want to submit some fancy stuff and replace the premade ones, go right ahead.
Who do I contact if I have questions about LR threads? + Show Spoiler +

I'm not so sure. Macsed plays an interesting style, and may catch an early advantage against Oz's traditional style. If Oz does beat Macsed (meh, 70% prob), he has to play the winner of Nestea vs. Scarlett. The last time I watched Scarlett vs. a Korean Zerg, she took JD to the last game where he yolo 6pooled. Her ZvZ is freaking good. That would put Oz against Scarlett, and she generally wins when they meet. Then Oz is relying on beating Nestea in a ZvP for his tourney life.
I'm still betting on Scarlett and Oz to make it through, but it's not the easiest group for Oz.

One assumes she is in NA, since this is live in NA.
Now we lost Taeja, we can't afford to lost scarlett. And it would be so so awesome to see nestea in s3 final. And i am chinese, i wanna see macsed as well. And I always like Oz. What a group.

You make good points and my statement about Oz was more of a heart pick I think Scarlett will win with hopefully Oz second.

guessing he's a naniwa fan who wants naniwa to be the "best foreigner" since most people think it's either naniwa or scarlett
but if you like foreigners wouldn't you rather they both be really good? i dunno
Or he's just a Naniwa fan who wants to see Nani at blizzcon. Scarlett doing good in WCS hurts Naniwa's chances. It doesn't have to be because of any "best foreigner sillyness".
Personally I really like both Scarlett AND Naniwa. If I had to choose who I want to see at blizzcon, it would probably be Naniwa though. However, if someone has to knock Naniwa out of top 16, I'd rather it be Scarlett than anyone else. Worst case scenario, neither Scarlett nor Naniwa makes it there, which is a pretty big possibility. Not sure what I'm rooting for or against tonight. I suppose it's best to just let whatever happens happen. It's out of our control anyway.

Well this makes some kind of sense I suppose. I'd rather just see the foreigners who have a better chance than a snowball in a microwave against koreans do well period, they don't exactly grow on trees.

Nestea ladders on NA?
When he was in NA for this I think so. I could tell it was him because I begged for mercy and he smiled at me.

My story is pretty similar, only replace "exam" with "conscription summons".
Oh, and I don't have muffins. Mind sending some over to your neighbours across the sea?

I am not sure it qualifies as an actual diet. It was pretty much "need blood sugar, naow".

Oz spawns in the top left MacSed spawns in the bottom right
1:00 Both players getting a 13 gateway -> 15 assimilator
2:00 MacSed building a second assimilator before gateway is finished. Both players start a cybernetics core. Oz starts a second assimilator after the cybernetics core.
3:00 Oz getting a stalker before a zealot. MacSed building a second gateway.
4:00 Oz making a mothership core. Both players getting warp gate research. Oz building a nexus at his natural. Oz starts a sentry.
5:00 MacSed building a twilight council. Oz building a robotics facility. Both players building another gateway. MacSed researching blink.
Oh what the hell. Why did I keep thinking it was Revival and not Oz?? I thought he looked radically different, but still insisted it was Revival. I kept thinking it was Revival, even when they repeatedly said it was PvP. Pretty sure they explicitly called him by his name Oz a few times, but my mind apparently managed to ignore those. I don't understand...
Maybe I should just give up, sleep, and retain my sanity.

I really like that Rotti says "I'm not sure what triggered it" instead of "that was a mistake". Shows respect to the players, and makes him look good in that he's not all-knowing.

I shall arrange for muffins and complimentary hockey pics.
WCS NA feels so slow paced compared to the other regions. Talk about the games, into a single game, into some videos, into break (and even the countdown is removed), into some more talk and then game 2.
Having the entire bo3 without breaks is so much better imo, this isn't enjoyable unless I do something meanwhile (like whine on TL :D)

I agree. One of the things that bugs me about Day9's casting (for example) is that he always says "that was a huge mistake" "x just made a really bad play" "horrible, fateful error" etc.

You don't chrono your warp gate when your opponent does. Macsed's was done much earlier.

Hey everyone sorry for my noobieness, but I'm kind of confused and i couldn't find a good article on the structure of wcs this year.
So if you come in top 6 of your region do you go to Toronto? I thought it was the top 4 originally but i heard one of these casters say something else now im confused.. Who exactly gets to go Toronto? Also, what point is the point of no return because i thought i heard them say that you could lose but still go to Toronto and get like 1500 points or something, or was that the whole having to be top 6 in the region?
Also how exactly did these players qualify for this? Was it like an invitation from Blizzard or qualify from last year or something? Say you're a new player on the scene how do they get into these if they're not really heard of, also is there no limit to the amount of Koreans in a region, because like you're playing WCS EU or AM and its like 70% Koreans so do the players just get to choose at the start of the year?
Again sorry for being a noob lol, fairly new in the SC scene. Thanks in advance ^.^
Maced vs Oz I thought was actually pretty good. Exciting at least for the cheese. I mean PvP stuff happens early game, I thought it was kind of expected.

i am talking about that they did not mention warpgate reasearch timings and anticipating what is going to happen while warpgate was researching.

5 from EU, 5 from KR and 6 from AM. The host region got 1 extra spot.

Since Toronto is in the Americas, WCS AM is the host region this season. As such, they get 6 of the 16 spots at the season finals.
WCS Korea and WCS EU get only 5 spots each. Making the top 4 of each region gets a player a spot to the Season finals, but the Ro8 losers still play for that final spot (or 2, for WCS AM).

-Top 5 of each region go to season finals. -Top 6 of whichever region is hosting the season finals goes. -There are qualifiers into challenger league, where you play several series against either people from premier league or other qualifiers, if you lose this there's a group stage as well. You can get knocked out of challenger league.

Hey man. Top 6 from the American region go to Toronto because it is the host region. In EU and Korea, top 5 go. You get points from playing in this and the season finals in Toronto. The players in this qualified through various means, except for a select few that were invited by Blizzard.

each region that holds the seasonal finals(this time it's AM) gets an extra player at the season final(top 6, placement matches are played out which determine this) for every other region its top 5 There were invites for premier and then qualifiers for premier and challenger league. After these 3 seasons is Blizzcon which is the players with the top 16 most points
Time for Scarlett Vs Nestea!!! I kind of hope Scarlett loses this, because I feel if Nestea loses this one he won't make it through but then... I don't want Scarlett to lose either? AHHHHHH

16 players qualify for season finals. 6 from the hosting region (AM this season!) and 5 from each of the others.
There are qualifiers for challenger league, and then you'll be able to qualify from there into premier league. There were some invites for season 1.
There is no limit to the amount of koreans. However, you can't freely change regions between each season. Players could change one time this year, probably because it was the first year.
So no one really has any use for WCS points in this group but Scarlett? I mean Oz if he wins AM finals/and season finals could make it but really they're all just playing spoiler

You never hear him cast Elfi before? He always casts like this for foreigners he is biased to.

What the hell are you talking about? Scarlett is the favorite but you're acting like Oz, Nestea, and Macsed are scrubs. When did you start watching SC2?
Are you watching the stream right now?!?!?!!?
Congrats one game! Good job! The part where Oz 2-0d Scarlett LAST SEASON is one of the many reasons that you're wrong.
Right, the same Oz who will probably lose to NesTea now and never even get to see Scarlett, good point.
Alright man whatever Scarlett is going to win this group but it is not nearly as unbalanced as you think. The other players in this group are good.

Bitter is known for his bias of foreign zergs, meh I don't mind it so much
feel like i'm the only one in the world who doesn't care about casters being "biased"
same way in real sports when someone complains an announcer is biased for the home team, i just don't care. people are people and they like who they like! as long as their casting is good it doesn't matter

I agree. I saw that clip of MonteCristo cheering for SKT1 at LoL worlds, and think it's hilarious. As long as the bias doesn't go negatively towards the other player.
That game 2 vs TheSTC was sick, I don't think many players would be so decisive as Nestea in that situation, showing some brilliance.

Maybe because : NaNiwa ?
Even though I root for Scarlett way more than NaNiwa.

Naniwa and Scarlett both have their moments of beating top Koreans, not sure how you can be so sure that Scarlett is better. Not to mention that beating Nestea isn't exactly a noteworthy achievement anymore (and this is coming from a Nestea fan T_T)

So you watched Naniwa beat Hackx2, San, Hyun, and perform well against Life but decided Scarlett beating Nestea 2-0 makes her better at this moment?
I think scarlett is better but I think it is certainly really close.

No, I've always maintained that Scarlett is the best foreigner. I even said as much in the IEM thread when everyone was overhyping NaNiwa only for Life to destroy him in the final. NaNiwa is a very good player and is definitely the sceond best foreigner. But I'm sorry but Scarlett is simply the better player of the two. If Scarlett was in the WCS EU I couldn't see her getting knocked out in the Ro32 like NaNiwa was.
In fact, in WCS AM Season 2 Scarlett only lost in the semi final to a Jaedong cheese in the final map, and also had a really good series against Bomber in the Season 2 Finals, again taking him to a deciding match.

Poor choice of words, especially when you know that it can be taken as a bad joke. Anyway, "dickriding" or not, she is a really strong player - one of the top foreigners, along with Naniwa. I hate that guy's guts, but his performance in IEM was strong.

Isn't Nestea more of a Zerg champion than Scarlett? Thereby making Templar's prediction that Nestea would advance favorable in The Great Dong's eyes? eye?
The Great Dong works in mysterious ways. His divine intellect is not for mortals to question.
But certainly his power is matched or close to that of the Creator?
Unsure of this, power matrix malfunctions when simulation is attempted. It goes to bluescreen and screams something a out over 9000
We could have a DBZ power level thread but comparing the relative strengths of the Gods of Starcraft.

does that go any differently if scarlett is aggressive with the first group of lings, tries to bait forcefields, then run behind macsed's army and flank when the FFs go down? lings are gonna die anyway, better that they die creating a flank and buying time than just rallying into an army?
It was just a timing push that hit before Scarlett's army was strong enough. If that had hit like 30 seconds later it fails horribly. As it happened Macsed got into a good position just before infestors popped.

Doesn't matter considering the damage he's done.
The point is that he could have done so much more. I like MacSed, but that was poor play, regardless of how much damage he actually did.

How funny would it have been if he said that he thanks the great nation of China for its superiority. And that it's going to destroy the degenerate western hegemony on the world with its superior discipline and hard work.

I missed the second game but the first was very good from MacSed. Scarlett should still be able to advance if she can keep her focus and not tilt, this series is more about MacSed than it is about her.

It's ok, he didn't say that. Actually he said less than what Edison translated. I think Macsed isn't really used to interviews. Needs more experience. But congrats!!!

Everyone has their off days. People probably doubted Naniwa when he fell out of WCS EU Ro32.

Lol look at you so smug after one Bo3 match. NaNiwa couldn't even make it out of his Ro32 group in WCS Europe, that didn't suddenly mean he is bad. Just like losing to MacSed doesn't suddenly mean Scarlett is bad. And Protoss is Scarlett's worst match up by the way.

Because one tournament means everything? Naniwa has always been WILDLY inconsistent with his results, mixing brilliant play with getting rolled by Targa. Scarlett was always very solid, she is clearly out of shape, she played a bad series and lost, BFD.
Seriously, I usually enjoy these WCS LR threads, but this one has become way too hateful and stupid for me, peace.

Though this is some very cute play by Nestea, still not enough I fear.
DRG is kind of back too, and we know that legends are legends because they can bounce back. But yeah I agree that Nestea's time is probably over, he's going to marry (has married?) and probably become less and less involved.

Scarlett was the most likely person in this group to make it far enough to pass naniwa, this makes it more likely that nobody from WCS NA will manage to get enough points.
On October 16 2013 10:42 ShowTheLights wrote: Can someone please explain how this affected Naniwa's position?
WCS Finals @ Blizzon are decided on total points accumulated over the last 3 seasons. Naniwa and Scarlett were pretty close, but now she didn't get the points required to outrank him.
On October 16 2013 10:42 ShowTheLights wrote: Can someone please explain how this affected Naniwa's position?
Scarlett was one of the people who had the best chance to pass him. Anyway as a person who doesn't care whether a foreigner makes it or not, I fail even more to see how it matters that this foreigner is Naniwa or Scarlett.
God, so much whine. Albeit it is a pity about Scarlett, but there are many sexy nerd ballers to observe in WCS NA. If you can't root for any of HerO, Polt, Jaedong, Spiderman/Hyun, or at least appreciate and enjoy their games then I don't really get what drew you to Starcraft in the first place.

Its not so much scarlett, although I am a fan, its foreigners in general.
I've been watching weekly since 2010, and ive seen thousands of korean vs korean matchups in the finals of nearly all the tournaments. Im just kind of bored of watching it. That doesnt mean Im not a fan.

lmao. you know that was my first time looking through the smilies ---^ up there. dont hate me for using it when TL is the one who put it in. meant it as more of a joking middle finger since everyone is riding the scarlett train these days.
My point is more a general statement of irritation, wasn't specifically directed at anyone.
My relatively unnoticed 'hiatus' from posting is solely due to being sick of reading countless, negative, whining posts day in, day out. 'LoL vs SC2' 'SC2 is dead' yadda yadda yadda.
Came back to watching the other day and went through the latest IEM and MMA's WCS EU run (spoiler-free somehow!) and had a good time.
You know, hell I got sick of SC2 too, but you know what, go take a break, do something else and come back. It's like getting laid after a big hiatus, it can be more satisfying than your average lay with a 5-a-day nympomaniac.
On October 16 2013 10:45 Darkhoarse wrote: If you stop watching WCS/Blizzcon because Scarlett is out, you're not a fan of SC2...
I hope it's a joke cause if it's not it's pretty stupid. I think alot of people stop watching tournaments in any sport once their favourite is out.
Yeah but I don't skip the playoffs if the Patriots miss them. (American football reference) If you can't bring yourself to watch the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS because Scarlett isn't there, then you aren't a fan of SC2. I stand by it.
Wait someone explain how it is even possible for Naniwa to make Blizzcon, Soo will automatically overtake him regardless of what happens in the GSL finals or at the Season 3 finals, as he will get a minimum of 1500 points even if he loses in the worst possible fashion in both of those events. (1000 for WCS KR second place, 500 for 13th-16th at the season finals) This will give him 2300+1500, which is 3800. Dear will also be getting a minimum of 1500 points from these two events taking him up to a total of 3250. Naniwa only has 3200, and no further opportunities to earn points. As Naniwa is currently ranked 14th, when these two players automatically overtake him he will be bumped down to 17th with no further opportunities to earn points....
Vortix could also knock him out with a good showing at WCS Toronto...
I can't see how he makes it, could someone enlighten me?

Because challenger league is played right after premier group, scarlett might be playing as well (not sure) also someone make a thread for this, I can't

Yeah but I don't skip the playoffs if the Patriots miss them. (American football reference) If you can't bring yourself to watch the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS because Scarlett isn't there, then you aren't a fan of SC2. I stand by it.

The GSL finals were great at BlizzCon along with the Blizzcon invitational. While it was nice to see foreigners they were outplayed in the first rounds.
Good mix of races and fan favorites, it will be a great tournament.

It's a simple distinction between being a fan of the game itself, and being a fan/supporter of a player/team, with maybe only a passing interest in the scene as a whole.
I mean, if I stop watching a tennis tournament because say, Roger Federer is out, versus a guy who watches all the way to completion regardless, it's not to say you're not a 'real' fan perhaps, but he'd definitely be considered a more dedicated/neutral one to me.

IDK ask Die4Ever
I did!
That's what he had to say.
For Naniwa -------------------------------------------Scarlett gets 16th place in America Premier This happens 38.156% of the time. When it does, it increases NaNiwa's chances to 44.123%.
Running the new stats now which will be more accurate with current results. edit: that's up from 30.2%

yea but those were all just individual people posting their opinions, which they're entitled to. i don't think that amounts to "bitching" or "negativity," it's people who were watching the games sharing their feelings about the tournament. as long as it's not like one person or the same couple of people starting arguments for pages and pages, i don't see the problem with it

You're forgetting that Dear and soO's points are already calculated into TL. For example, soO have 2300 points after 2nd place and 16th place in S3 Finals. If soO made 1st at blizzcon he'd be at 2800 points. If he then made Ro8 at S3 he'd be at 3050. He needs to make at least Ro4 to knock out naniwa.

Haha you realize that's how the vast majority of people think right? Why would I watch sports if my favourite team is not there? Sure I may watch the Superbowl or the Stanley Cup because it is a major once per year event, but there is no way I'm watching games that my favorite team or player isn't playing in. Most people might be more likely to watch if their favourites are involved sure, but major sporting events have viewing figures that absolutely dwarf the entire populations of the competing nations/teams oftenplace.
Why would you not watch a player you hate, and root against him?
WCS Finals are meant to be the equivalent of the aforementioned events, the World Championship after all?
Watching the competitive scene for quality of games and going to play the game yourself are different. I mean I can go and pass a football around, it's not the same thing as watching the pros doing it from the comfort of my own home, with the fans and the atmosphere and the excitement around it.

Shh, you're disrupting the storyline.
Although Naniwa even being in contention for the spot, alongside Scarlett until she lost tonight, might say something to the wider community as a whole. They both have spent an awful lot of time in Korea, even if Naniwa hasn't been there in 6 months.

I am hoping that Naniwa makes it because we really need a foreigner at Blizzcon to increase interest in the tournament/ I am not optimistic though. I understand the percentages above but my guess is that it is highly unlikely that players such as Soo, Dear, Hyun or even Trap don't earn enough points in Season 3 finals to pass him in the standings. Which of course means Blizzcon simply becomes WCS Korea 2.0 and I think that will really hurt the interest in Blizzcon.
When WCS is fully running you can have a good 6 hours a day of quality tournament content on weekdays plus streams. So I think 2013 content level is pretty cool.

Once upon a time, Flash was a great thing. It enabled so much wonderful things on the web.
Now it's a bloody pox on computer performance and I can't wait until it is enshrined in the dark depths of web technologies superceded. Like the blink and marquee tags. (I blame Adobe.)
Okay, I'm going back on-topic now. Nestea gonna Nestea.
To be honest, as someone who wasn't a big follower when he was at his peak I never really worshipped at his altar, but still sad to see him in his current shape.

You seem to know more than me. I've noticed my PC is getting slow as fuck of late, regardless of my upkeeping it seems every new update to software just makes them more processor intensive.
Not an issue, but there seems a trend now that devs simply do not let you use older versions of shit, and demand you upgrade. Bastards

I think, where he's at right now, it's "I've made my money. I still play better than just about everyone else my age. I'm good."

I've watched it happen over time. And yeah, software is being written with less emphasis on efficient use of resources - then again when I was in college (~ 1995 - 2000 and some more recently) my professors repeated the following phrase: "Memory is cheap, don't be afraid to use it." I'm guessing that lack of optimization culture has only grown. (Oblig - Get off my lawn.)
Wang chung sounds vaguely obscene, I misread initially as 'wang chug' which is even more filthy.
I don't really see him being at that stage, as a non-devotee I'd always felt mechanics were his relative weakpoint, and his game understanding and starsense etc were where he excelled. The problem with being a player so reliant on shaping the strategic handbook, is that when others with better mechanics catch up in that regard, you have to continually revolutionise to keep up; if you're that kind of player.

80s song playing to a Borderlands 2 commercial. Not a bad song, for the 80s, actually.
Honestly, far worse than foreigners being out is that I'm sick of seeing what amount to the same exact games say, 75% of the time. Even when their play is incredible and precise and meticulous and well controlled, I just don't care seeing those perfect surrounds or forcefields of stuttersteps for the 1000th time.
Now that I think about it in retrospect I should have been more scared for scarlett in this group. MacSed has definitely been playing well lately in other tournaments and Oz beat her last season. Oh well. Hopefully she can win a WCS AM season in 2014. I think she has the talent.

No need to thank me.
Backstreet's back, alright!
Thank you, thank you.
It makes the fact that I now have searches for Backstreet Boys music videos and lyrics enshrined in both my Google and Youtube history completely worth it .

1. you post wang chung song 2. you imply 80s music sucks 3. you choose the worst song ever made in the 80s and say its not bad for the 80s.
so by your backwards logic, U2 the Joshua Tree and Michael Jackson's Thriller suck ballz... but at least the 80s produced Wang Chung.
I lived the 80s. Don't tell me what it was like. There was no logic there, it was empirical. And for the 80s, yes, that wasn't bad. Would you rather I come up with something worse? "Not bad" does not mean "oh my god this sucks".

You may have lived in the 80's but you were the guy sitting in the corner on the dancefloor refusing to do blow with the club owner and his entourage only to go home and collect pogs.
Scarlett only lost because she took a break due to fucked up wrists. Same reason why taeja lost to jd yesterday. Fucked up wrists. Scarlett is a much much better player than oz will ever be. Looks like another off day for her. She and taeja needs to stop this break thing. Or go get wrist surgery or something so they won't stop losing to Korean players who they would normally outplay in every single way and sense.

Progamers would appreciate if you didn't try to find exucses for them.

Sc will prosper fine with or without Naniwa being at Blizzcon.
Just like Sc1 did, but is it the same as Sc2 in terms of the reach? I don't think so!
I have heard about many people who tuned in for IEM NYC just because of Naniwa... I mean, just because of one foreigner. People in TL don't get this, because most of them are hardcore Sc fans, and for them it doesn't matter. But if you care for a wider spread of Sc then it should matter for you.
Too bad, Scarlett at Toronto and Blizzcon would've done a lot for the hype. Well Jaedong wins both anyways, so whatever. I'm sure Scarlett will come back stronger next year and there are still team leagues.
Very sad Scarlett didn't make it. I have said this on many posts. But all korean finals is boring................I am not as invested in them at all. AT least an EG player is advancing, so I can root for that even though I don't care for OZ.

You clearly haven't followed Oz's career have you ?

Probably just a troll but Oz has much better results across his career than Scarlett.
