I was also thinking he may have wanted to make sure he was mining as many minerals as possible so that he'd have enough for extra pylons and cannons or units in a little bit.

khaldor and wolf did group stages last year and Artosis and tasteless did the playoffs. Not sure about this year. But the casting times are so long for the first 2 days that it makes sense to split them up.
