Hello everyone! IGN Pro League is thrilled to announce our third iteration of Team Arena Challenge, featuring many respected and elite invited teams! This edition of Team Arena Challenge also has a semi-open, application-based qualifier element. If you are unfamiliar with IPL Team Arena Challenge, check out the following links:
Dream Team Gaming - Replacing the now defunct Vile, based on overall Qualifier performance
The Format!
This tournament is a double-elimination bo9 Winner's Format. Each match will consist of five players from each team. Teams choose their first player blind, then the winner of the first game stays on to play a new player from the losing team. The winner of each game stays on until all five players from the opposing team have been defeated. This can result in an all-kill, where one player defeats all five of the opposing players in a row. It can also result in a reverse all-kill, where a team's anchor player can come back from 0-4 to win it all for their team!
If Team A loses to Team B in their first match, they will drop into the lower or losers bracket and will have another chance to fight their way to the finals. The grand finals will require the team coming from the lower bracket to win twice in order to become the champions, while the team coming from the winners or upper bracket will only need to win one bo9. There will be 24 total teams competing from around the world!
Prize Breakdown
1st Place: $9,000 split between the team any way they see fit.

I actually loved seeing Complexity and MVP compete together, they are my favorite two teams and if they end up going up against each other I won't really know who to root for. It always feels good to have one big team to root for in events such as this, in team sports in general most people have one team that they wholeheartedly root for and this kind of breaks that for me.
Oh well, I hope coLMVP can be an entity present in the GSTL next season at least. I certainly don't want to see this partnership end. It's been really nice having my two favorite teams consolidated as one entity that I can get behind wholeheartedly.
On March 29 2012 10:19 yankjenets wrote: Hmmm, I wonder why Complexity and MvP are playing on separate squads this time around?
coL has the players to be competitive this time around haha
The exact same reason why Liquid and oGs choose to play separately. I honestly think they would take first place if the two teams decided to play as oGsTL, like in the GSTL. Sooo many good players of each race.
EG, EG, EG ,EG. This is great. I have never enjoyed a team league as much as I enjoyed TAC2. Doa and Mr. Pajamas are a fantastic combo as well; they provide some analytics but retain a casual and fun mood. A pleasure to watch!
I have to say that I'd be very interested in Blast coming through the qualifier (I also hope for aTn, of course ^-^), because I feel that they are a vastly underrated team with lots of potential. All in all I'd be happy to see more of the non-mainstream teams qualify for this as it's a great opportunity for them to get their names out there.
think it's kinda strange to put "waiting for reply" teams on there. you should've just announced them once they accepted and not said anything if they didn't
On March 29 2012 11:37 Gator wrote: think it's kinda strange to put "waiting for reply" teams on there. you should've just announced them once they accepted and not said anything if they didn't
They probably did it for hype, and to prevent people from freaking out. You have last tournament's champions in Prime, as well as major team such as Startale, FXO, IM, etc. and I'm sure many people want to see them return, and would have asked questions about why these top teams weren't coming back. I think it just prevents possible confusion.
Cool, another IPL TAC to enjoy . The last two tournaments were great, and it's going to be even better now that many foreign teams acquired more Korean talents. Liquid FIGHTING xD
Perfectly awesome news, excited to see another season, the last one was very fun too watch. Maybe some alternating casters though? Doa and CatsPajamas are fine, but everyday for days on end is somewhat endless...
col and MVP competing separately or together? Just curious...
Great news! Really happy about this returning so quickly. Will watch all the matches I can for sure.

I agree here, I really like Doa/Cats but I think a little diversity can help.
I know it's really unlikely but TB/Apollo would be great for this :-/
On March 29 2012 07:43 RyanRushia wrote: glad to see compLexity as own entity for this :D
Yeah, they have really earned it in the last few days. Hopefully, for their sake, they can avoid the embarrassing exit like the one they had last time when MVP isn't around XD
This might have already been answered or discussed but I haven't read this thread so sorry if it has.
But is it just me or is this league too open? As in just about every pro team that has any interest in doing it is accepted and is in it. I think this would be much more interesting if it was more exclusive similar to former WC3L. This right now is just the best teams, but not the best of the best teams.
You can still have qualifiers and everything but the teams should have to qualify through a bracket. Around 12-14 total teams is good, but 24 total teams in the end is just way too many. I love the underdog as much as the next guy, but qualifying through a bracket after having beat 2-3 pro teams along the way would be amazing and likely would help elevate that up and coming team substantially.

How does a 24 team Double Elimination work? Does that mean 8 teams are going to be seeded into the second round?
do we really need a team league with more korean teams than foreigner teams AND vile? this is going to be a slaughter.... we have 4 foreigner teams that don't have half their roster consisting of koreans and i think we can all agree that neither vile nor quantic are going to put up a real fight....
On March 29 2012 15:15 sVnteen wrote: we have 4 foreigner teams that don't have half their roster consisting of koreans and i think we can all agree that neither vile nor quantic are going to put up a real fight....
Never count Vile out in a Winner's Format match. They were really close to beating TSL in TAC2, and I'd say they earned a spot for TAC3. Quantic has SaSe and Naniwa along with a few other lesser known players. I wouldn't expect Vile or Quantic to win, but I could see them placing high enough to win money.

Megiddosc, u are right Sir!
I think in Teamleagues everything is possible, u can snipe one player with special tactics just trained for him. So if the smaller lesser skilled teams prepare well for their opponent, they could take some games.
I love the last season! BO9 is just amazing and the 5:0 wins from Sheth against EG was so fucking incredible! <3 Sheth
9000 is such an anti-climatic number. First place has to get at least 10 grand IMO. In fact the prize pool overall is a joke in contrast to the amount of games IPL makes them play with "double-elimination" format (which should never be used for Team games).

You might even say it needs to be OVER said number
I like the fact that more and more team leagues pop up, the price pools and production increases and more korean teams participate too. Love this development.
I think if the korean teams dont accept, the 4 last spots should be earn through qualifiers, instead more invites. There is already alot of invited teams.
I wish MC would get a few players for SK so that they could partake in team leagues .... he ought to snipe mkp from prime, they seem to be fairly close and get a good zerg >.<

TLO has been wrecking strong Korean terran players and Ret and Sheth are two of the strongest foreigners. HayprO, NonY and Jinro are all really good when in form. oGs recently lost NaDa and MC and they don't quite seem to have stabilized. I really think TL has the edge.

with the recently revitalized SuperNova, teamleague boss Vines (aka Penis), the Dark Knight InCa, all-in King ForGG and solid as hell TheStC, a couple of Zergs that actually can snipe quite well (Cezanne zvz/vt to some extent) and fallen from grace Terrans like Top and ensnare, who i would pick over most non korean TLers, oGs has quite a good chance as well.
aTn the always screwed over team T_T oh well hope they do well in the qualies..
Sometimes I wish they'd be american so they'd have a big fanbase and invites to shit...
Also, hope teams like BLAST etc try out for this, they deserve some spotlight. Mill, RoX.KiS are the obvious ones, can't have them all ofc. May the best team win.

Wow Complexity fielding a stand alone team this time. Should be quite exciting! Any particular reason why you guys wont do a league format so TL can create a fantasy league?

Liquidbet wouldn't be a problem if IPL drops their double-elimination in favor of a league style format leading into single elimination playoffs.

I honestly think that Mouz can't win team leagues with the way other teams are investing now. Don't misunderstand, I love Mouz just as much as I love TL, but if they always field the same 5-man roster in every matches, then they are bound to lose sooner or later. Hope Mouz can soon expand their roster

Liquibet can work for double-elimination as well. I believe it's fantasy leagues that you are thinking about, right?

Guess with KSL, GSTL and EGTL its just too much stuff to take care of.
This is quoted from an e-mail I received moments ago:
Here is the seed order for the first qualifier. This may chance from qualifier to qualifier based on results both in this tournament and in others:
1. ROX.KIS 2. It’s Gosu 3. Team Acer 4. Dignitas 5. Alternate-Type II (Alternate Attax and Type II are playing as one team, this is a special case as each team would have been accepted individually and Alternate only has 4 players. Partnerships are generally discouraged in TAC after TAC1 for numerous reasons. This has been allowed as a special case, if anyone has questions about it, they can ask.) 6. Karont3 e-Sports Club 7. LighT 8. FXO eSports CIS (formerly IMBA.FXO) 9. Infinity Seven 10. Check 6 11. ESC Icy Box 12. Dreamteam Gaming 13. Team Clash 14. Absolute Legends (formerly eSahara) 15. Nightmares (NMx) 16. Team Energy (NrG)

So we beat several of these teams on here, narrowly lose 4-5 to your 2nd seeded team It'sGosu in the imgur Team league semi final.. yet we don't get even get a shot...
I may be wrong but these are the 16 teams for the 1st qualifier and there are four online qualifiers planned. The top two from each qualifier will advance. It seems to me that all these deserving teams which have not been given a spot in this qualifier will get a place in the next one. I can't confirm any of this since I am in no way associated with IPL but that is what I infer from the posts earlier in this thread and from what little I know.
On April 14 2012 05:02 Serinox wrote: How can the Karont3-eSports Club participate? They only have 3 players.

Indeed. They are kind of Spain team now. They are the strongest team in Spain right now and other clubs conceded to give them their best players so the can play all together for the IPLTAC.
One of the things that makes TAC great is the qualifiers and the potential for new teams like Vile last season to qualify and shine. we can see up and coming teams play, even if they aren't well known, they just need the skill, and I think that is exactly what the scene needs.
On May 05 2012 02:23 BrownBagin wrote: what happens now that vile is a part of quantic? do yall invite another team?
Quantic wins, they are too good now Vile by themselves were able to hold with the Korean teams last TAC, with Naniwa, Sase, Apocalypse and all the rest of the Quantic guys together, they could go very very far in this tournament.
looks like dtg replaced vile? wonder how they seeded the teams too, it wasn't by last season's placings
should've set up a bracket between zenex, dtg, esc and atn-type and have those guys play it out
It came down to between DtG and AlternateType.
In the point system I devised for determining who got through, each had 9 points for finishing in 2 finals, 1 semifinal and 1 time losing in R1.
ZeNEX did not perform as well, neither did ESC.
So since they were tied, I looked at other leagues, quality of opponent in our tournaments and their head to head (Head to Head, DtG won 5-4)
In the end, I decided DtG was more deserving, though by the slimmest of margins. My decision was approved by the rest of the IPL staff (as well as the seedings for the events).
For overall seedings, we determined our previous events, other team events, solo events for team's players & consistency.
Most of the potential 2nd round matches look insane. Empire/Slayers, Startale/Quantic look particularly interesting. Its kinda funny to see mouz as the only nonkorean team to get a bye into the 2nd round.
EDIT: Also when is this starting? Liquidpedia has it for 5/6 which can't possibly be right
EDIT2: Interesting to note, it looks like if both FXO teams lose first round then win their first round in losers there will be FXO vs FXO (still surprised they wouldnt just compete as one gigantic team of death and destruction)
On May 09 2012 08:20 ninjamyst wrote: how were the teams seeded? why didn't you use last tournament's results? how come some teams are seeded into 2nd round already?
It was based off of TAC 2's results as well as the results of other team leagues and some subjective opinion on relative strengths of teams. Some teams are in the 2nd round because we went from a 16 team to a 24 team bracket.
We are actually finalizing plans to make seeding and other information more transparent for future events, both for spectators and for the teams themselves. We hope to announce these plans very soon!
As long as this league uses double elimination format with such long sets, I cannot seriously follow it. It's just extorting more games to cash on. People just take a peek and tune out and check results later. Very unhype and the numbers from last seasons show it.
o well. Hard to make excuses for ZeNEX. Hmm, excuse A (playing really early) or excuse B (not always fielding their A team)? Good luck to all the teams :D

Extorting? These are free up until 480p, and I have no idea why you wouldn't want more games. The numbers from last season were often in 5 figures, especially when fan favorite teams played. But if you don't like this tournament, I guess no one can force you to watch.

MVP is a GSTL title-winning team, despite their frankly terrible performance last TAC, so I guess that could really help. Secondly, can't really underestimate a team that has DRG on their roster.

Challonge doesn't quite make the right bracket for a 24-team double-elim tournament. Its default has WR2 losers playing WR1 losers immediately, but shouldn't. We're just in the process of creating our own.
Love it, but why is Liquid not seeded in the second round as they placed 6th last season? Edit: Reserving judgement as I see it is a temporary bracket.
Edit2: I guess it takes into account both of the first two seasons of IPLTAC. Not sure how I feel about that, but a Liquid vs Mouze match in the second round would be fantastic so I really can't complain.
Eh, you really shoudln't just make the seedings like how you feel they are right. Top 8 from last tournament should get the 8 spots in 2nd round, everything else is pretty unfair.
Well Kevin announced that this is the last TAC as they are moving to a League format for what would have been TAC4, so those placement issues shouldn't be a problem next time.
The byes seem odd and poorly defined. Any perceived subjectivity and bias will only discredit the results.
Like others suggested, the only proper and reasonable way to setup the bracket is give byes to the IPL TAC2 top 8. Otherwise, without careful explanation of why each team gets their place, IPL is going to have a mess on its hands.
agreed 100%. def do not like the seeds. will give more odds of Korean dominance just like seeding all Koreans and formerly good foreigners at ipl4. mouz has no thorzain now. big sad face ipl

What should it look like then?
Can't make the WR1 teams play each other as you'll end up with 4 teams advancing, but 8 teams dropping from WR2. And making WR2 losers play each other, and then the winners playing WR1 match would make it just as unfair as the current format.
I'm another person not totally happy with the seeds here. 1st-4th should be the teams that got those positions in TAC2. 5th/6th should be the two teams who got that position in TAC2, randomised. 7th/8th as with 5th/6th. Then the remaining invited teams are randomized and paired up with the eight qualifying teams.
Feels like Hoseo and prime should be in different ends of the bracket due to first and second last season, eighter way im excited for it to finally start, the qualifiers took ages :>.

I think the information you need is there. It doesn't give a specific time, but simply says the morning. Hopefully that helps, and I hope you have a great time.

Thank you!
Though, truth to be told, I was wondering if you had information on the bo9 that supposedly follows the match :
After the Grand Finals conclude, there will be a bo9 showmatch between the two teams’ aces! Stay tuned for more information about this and other possible matches at the event!
It's funny, because in any case, I am pretty sure I'll be there. But I simply NEED to know the time of the bo9 before purchasing the tickets
The TAC3 showmatch and grand finals will begin at 4 p.m. local time (PDT) at Face Off on Saturday, August 11th. We had to change it from the morning to the afternoon.
