It's announcements like this that make me want to forget all the wrongdoings of iSeries in other games and attend. Maybe if I get to play Totalbiscuit and dApollo like a pair of conga drums.
Looking forward to it. It's unbelievable how many awesome tournaments take place resently.
Also IPL 4 will be even better than IPL 3 since the community saw how well it's produced and hopefully next time the crowd will be bigger and more hyped up
Announcing this so late and doing it on the same date as the biggest tourney of the year (Providence).. This would have been a fine tournament to participate in. Unfortunately everything is booked for Providence.
I don't feel that there will be too much overlap between providence and this qualifier, since many players in EU are unable make the trip to the US. I feel that this qualifier is more designed for any up-and-coming EU players to have a chance to make a name for themselves.
Nevertheless, IPL4 needs more hype, which is ironic because IGN is a media company.
Edit: Whoa, first day on TL and I got quoted by TotalBiscuit. Awesome!

This is what I would think/hope as well. It makes a lot more sense to come to IPL in the UK for many of the Europeans, flights are cheap, the place is fairly accessible and the potential payout is good.
This is official, by the way. There was some skepticism from the community, but the tournament is being run by insomnia44 with our full consent. Can't wait to see who will make it out of this qualifier alive!
More qualifiers may be springing up in the near future, so keep an eye out.
This is really great to see, a major tournament qualifier in the UK, I love to see the commitment IGN has towards making eSports happen. If I was good enough and didn't need to get a flight just to get there (live in Northern Ireland) I would totally attend this but I wish the attendees and the tournament all the best. I assume this is going to be streamed? If so can watch this in the morning then pick up on MLG providence later in the day when it starts, gonna be an epic weekend of SC2.

IPL4 stepping up their game.
edit: sucks for Liquid though, they're one of the very few teams sending EU guys to MLG and are getting punished for that now.
It's a shame for them but it's not particularly a punishment - MLG is definitely going to be the bigger event of the weekend even though the timezones only marginally overlap for spectators.
The dates for insomnia have been set forever, just like those for MLG, only the prize pool in house was going to be a lot smaller - about a fifth if I recall. This is a relatively easy chance for IPL to get their foot in to Europe, brings prestige to both insomnia and IPL, and should attract much better players to the UK as a result. There's still plenty who will be able to make it short haul despite the unfortunate short notice.

He may not have to qualify, but unless he isn't allowed in the qualifier for that reason, that's a pretty big sum of money to turn your head at.
Instead of advertising this as a Qualifier, I think IGN will get alot more hype if they treat this as a tournament like MLG treats their "qualifiers" for Providence.

I think it already is really, it's more like the Insomnia44 BYOC Finals
I also don't think people are realizing that the other 16 players come from 2 Online Qualifiers that have yet to be held, IPL is about to have even more amazing content for us.

Calling Providence as the biggest toruney of the year is a bit farfetched... When it comes to pricepool its like 8th this year. GSL have deeper purse each month ^^ The only thing that helps a bit is 1st place price... 50k $ makes it the 2nd best payout for the winner in this year.
Ps. Even if it was announced earlier you would still send your team to MLG due to TLO and Tyler personal contracts with sponsors.
its always a shame when big tournaments are on the exact same weekend. Hadnt heard anyhting about the IPL tournament till now, hopefully someone from the uk will qualify!!! lol
Be nice if some top europeans came over though!! just byoc.....
Exciting news! And less than an hour's drive away from me. I'm definitely going to turn up on the Sunday to see the IPL qualifier.
I doubt I can persuade any of my local friends to come to watch Starcraft with me though, so I'll be there on my own. Anyone else going that feels like making a TL meetup?
About 30 miles NW of Birmingham or 40 from the Airport
didnt realaise so far away from the airport... sucks for any foreigners who come over!!!
Not really due to the good train links from Birmingham airport.
To put it in to some sort of context the distance from LAX to the Anaheim Convention Centre is 35 miles, and Boston Logan to Providence is 50. It's not a long way at all.

Thats what I meant by long way, trains are crowded and I wouldnt put my computer in the undercarriage of a bus Im goign to try go to the next insomnia and im driving all the way!!!
There are some incredible players on their way to this qualifier in November, and we're working on getting the online portion of the tournament underway soon! Keep an eye out for signups!
Minigun and Darkforce both qualified through online tournaments so thats 2 out of 16 pros known, can't wait to see the rest :D
Btw to everyone going to the BYOC, make sure you go into the SC2 tourny then signup and enter, at i43 I met a few people who didn't do this and wern't allowed to play in the tournament!
So no money for winning the main byoc tournament this time just a 17th seed for the Sunday? Hardly seems worth playing past Ro16 in that case. This whole format seems a little rough on the competitive uk players tbh
To be fair, it is to earn your place amongst players that are normally invited to big tournaments you simply would not have the chance to play in. Other tournaments have similar massive open brackets to qualify to play the big players, this time we offer 16 places for such a chance, not something to be scoffed at.
If you earn the 17th seed by winning, you don't have to face the best player we can invite in the first game. You get to play seed 16 first instead. That has to be worthwhile when it comes to a $20,000 prize pool hasn't it? Its a LOT of cash!

I don't mind the whole setup, im just really bloody curious about the prizepool distribution. If its only top 8 like last iseries that seems harsh as like no british person will take money home (apart from like bling).
The 6 invited players are: Dignitas – Samayan “BlinG” Kay Team Grubby – Manuel “Grubby” Scenkhuizen Ttesports – Aleksey “WhiteRa” Krupnyk mousesports – Marcus “ThorZaIN” Eklöf mousesports – Dennis “HasuObs” Schneider Team Redbyte Italia – Maurizio “StarEagle” Carioti
The 2 online qualifier players are of course
Team Alternate – Johnathan “DarKFoRcE” Belke compLexity – Chad “Minigun” Jones
Pughy - I honestly think this is amazing for UK players - we have never had a prize pool like this before, and the chances are the players that qualify from the BYOC will be mostly from the UK - and they get to prove themselves against players that otherwise you would only watch streams of and see compete around the world. As with any competition, they need to do well in the tournament to win prize money - and with 16 slots in the 32 player bracket - there is a good chance for some upsets and a top 8 UK position, win 2 sets and prize money is achieved!
I am really looking forward to seeing some of the best the UK has to offer against some of the best in Europe.

yeh your not the only one, first of all they say IPL wualifer is being played is being played late then they pretty much screw all the UK players anyway. no incentive for anyone to actually turn up and play the BYOC if their going to invite 16 players of the top europeans. Only benefit would be to play vs probably one top eurpoean if you actually mmanage to get into the IPL event? lol
Just out of curosity do the invited players have to bringtheir own computers?
Machines are provided for the 12 invited and 2 online qualifier players.
This tournament is still is incredibly open to all comers to prove they are good enough. We are trying to base things at a level where the top players WANT to come and play, and the average player can come and at least show they are worthy of prize money at a prestigious event. When you get past top 8, you could pay out to top 16. But then somebody may argue it is unfair to the top 32. You need to choose a line and we have chosen 8 for this event.
All feedback is taken on board of course, negative and positive and will have some influence when planning future tournaments. I <3 Pughy and think he is awesome just in case anyone is not sure
I personally think this is what we needed, so badly in the UK. No sc2 gaming houses or shit like that. THIS IS IT, so excited Kharne, i'll be there in full support!
More importantly, I have an actual chance (although it's pretty slim, telford's a bitch to get to from surrey) of actually seeing thorzain, whitera, etc. This must be one of the first times they've been in the UK.

Quite the opposite, this is a great opportunity for the SC2 scene in the UK. Some big names finally competing at an event hosted in the UK.
once we get a tournaments up and running thats no players need to bring their own computer I think then we can say were in the the right direction. Thats whats happening in the rest fo the world.
Dont get me wrong I will be watching on stream and I44 is known as one of the best in the world BYOC event but the bitter taste of what happened at EGL from a suppliers point means that the UK still has tons of work to go fiorward, I hope EGL can get some kind of compesnsation of what happened as surely the suppliers should of checked everything was working properly as well?
Once we get tournaments such as europe and america where competitors dont need to bring their own computers as unless you drive its so difficult to get everything there we will see the bets foreigners turning up without havign to be invited and given a computer.
Anyway I hope we see a few Uk players in the Top 8 and mayb one or two suprises

Ofcourse bro gotta share the love :D And yeah while I'm disapointed less british player's will end up with prizemoney, i44 will put us on the map and hopefully that'll have alot of long term benefits for the entire scene so its all good ! And the iseries events are worth going to for socialising and having a laugh alone so this tournament is really gonna be sick good :D
To everyone who hasn't gone to an iseries event, its 24 hour gaming so from 6pm thursday (which costs extra) til monday 4pm its non stop gaming!!! So be prepared for some crazy shit You'll see ppl in pajamas and dressing gowns just casually walking around. Theres a bar open til 1ish (cant take booze in tho) and the venue itself is in a very busy place, mcdonalds and asda's are a 5 minute walk aswell as a shopping center and some pubs.
Some photos from i43, this is the first time(i think) at the TIC and i44 will be the second time!
This is half of hall 1 which was 1/3 of the gaming area
Mcdgobert from Dignitas (hes management) give away a Bigfoot net card but he made the dude come on stage and dance first. This was during the opening ceremony and was so funny, be careful though, shit gets voilent when they chuck freebies
Main camping site
Promo girl taping a nerd to a chair, pillars are also common aswell
The famous Sombrero BBQ
Buch from team infused's HoN team, was alittle tired after the BBQ. They came first and won £2100 lmao
Me playing ArcaneWinds on the stands, ginger team kill
This is exactly what the UK needs, everybody should want to play vs the best players in the world or there is no point in competiting IMO. After attending EGL and playing vs 4k dream, theres nothing more challenging than that calibre especially compared to ladder. If your not there to take it seriously then have fun and try your luck vs the best players with crazy strats, whilst having fun with your mates at lan. I personally cant wait and i really hope i get to play some of the invited players :D :D.

What happened at EGL?
Also does anyone know what time the finals are likely to finish on Sunday? Planning a trip up there and want to know whether we can get the last train back or whether we'll need to stay somewhere.

from what ive read the prize is to get into the IPL qualifier!!!!
So glad Stephano is going though!!! Suprised he isnt going to MLG though :S
wonder who else will turn up now with the attention the event is now getting for the BYOC part!!!

Anyway, I'm glad something of this caliber happens in the UK!
If the format is similar to the last time Multiplay and MLG were held in the same days, they don't (or barely) overlap. You just need to give up sleep :p
On the negative side, I see that most of the top players from last BYOC are already qualified for the 32-man IPL4 round, so it looks like, at least Friday, won't be that exciting.
Can't wait to see how this event plays out with this player pool. Looking really good! A bit sad that it has to happen on the same weekend as MLG however especially since I wont be able to see most of either tournament.
We're at the office at the moment gearing up to get everything sorted for the main stage. Looks like our stream will finish before Provi starts so that all the viewers that want to can hop over.
If DeMuslim wins this, the crowd will go F'N mental!!! English have always been crazy when it comes to supporting athletes/football teams/whatever, im pretty sure our nerds wont let us down if DeMuslim goes all the way!!! Big cheers for him.
I wont be able to be there this weekend now as of a second family death this year has plagued my plans so i will be watching via stream cheering on DeMu to take home the gold for us English!

So is the only person that qualifies for IPL 4 the winner of this event? Did they also only take the No. 1 spot from the Pacific qualifier? If so, this is one hell of a tough tourney to get into. The players will definitely deserve it.
I wonder what the prize-pool for the main event is going to be and how many qualifiers they're going to have. Are there going to be players seeded into the tournament from IPL3? Have they even released any info about the main event yet?
I wonder how the i44s bandwidth will handle all the SC players watching MLG later on? Anyone know if they are planing on putting the stream up on a big screen?

Ye, we have a 14 ft. screen in the main arena for all the spectators to enjoy.

You've done a good job of pretending you're not a Geordie TB, but us Londoners know where you're really from! Watered down beer? Have you tried Newcy Brown?

They've switched the layout around. The exbo hall is now hall 2 which is closed atm. The main stage is where hall 1 was last time. Probably because all the construction work is finished this time around.

Jetlag is worse than actual lag. A completely level playing field is really hard to come by but part of winning is overcoming that. I really don't like people trying to take away players' results by blaming something.

I've bought a spectators pass for Sunday. I'll be driving down there for 10am. I think £5 is a really great price!
Update on the Player List for this weekends invited players, unfortunately due to reasons beyond there control Alt.ClouD and col.Minigun can not attend the i44 IPL4 Qualifiers. But do not fear IPL fans because Dignitas Bishu and Dignitas DreAm are stepping in to fill the two spots available for the 16 player invites/qualifiers. Get yourselves ready the competition just staked up another notch! Have a great weekend everyone, Enjoy!

So this is where all the major EU players are! :D :D
Really unfortunate timing for the tournament, this will get completely overlooked. This lineup and prizepool would be a headliner on pretty much any other weekend.

It's an IPL event, on a weekend, that runs before (not during) MLG, it's going to do well. Sure, it might run at about the same time GSL for those in North America but as people wake up it's going to grab viewers like a flytrap. I would guess at 40k for the finals.

Not sure about that, because I don't know how many people will watch this during the day when they know MLG will be on later.
But I certainly hope it does well! Lineup and prize pool deserve it.

Consistency in introduction is as far as I'm concerned and important point of professionalism. Some people tweak out on it for some reason, I'm not really sure why that is, but every caster has their specific introduction style.

There's alot more people watching the SC2 on the mini side stage than there is watching the CoD finals on the main stage.

If you keep up with production and just go stalker/zealot/phoenix they can do fine against mutaling. Phoenixes do absolutely stupid damage to muta you just can't let the zerg engage. Trying to go colossus like that leaves nothing for your phoenix to fall back to =/ Not fun (not to mention it was like 3:1 muta to phoenix rofl).

Even if he kept making them you just cannot keep up, also the zerg just gets to take the map while harassing you which just lets them make mutas to phoenix at like a 3:1 rate

You need crazy good micro. The pheonix has 1 or 2? range more than a muta and can move while shooting, to actually pull that off you could win an unwinnable situation but it's so hard to do that and macro at the same time. That's why Grubby couldn't beat the mutas, he couldn't make more at the same time as attacking in.

The benefit of going phoenix is that you have equal mobility and can expand much more freely. Going colossus rather than blink stalker to support meant he couldn't do that. Sure, they lose if you have 8 phoenix against 35+ 2:1 mutas with +attack upgrades. If you go armor/shield upgrades, keep up with phoenix production and don't throw away your mobility with colossus you can see how good phoenix really are.

Stephano always had way more mutas than grubby had phoenixes plus I believe for a lot of the fights, Stephanos mutas were 2-0 compared to 0-0, with grubby's air attack upgrade coming after quite a number of engagements.
Stephano didn't even play well imo, but was just way ahead thanks to that poor decision from grubby at the start.

They have one more range and you can't make a single mistake when microing them or you start to lose them too quickly, it's not a practical response due to the inability to micro that hard and macro

Going phoenix from scratch when the mutas have already popped will result in a loss 100% of the time because you can't keep up with the zerg. Colossus was obviously the wrong choice. To afford the air upgrades and ground upgrades and make multiple stargates isn't feasible with the gas available.

Unlucky
You don't need ground upgrades (unless the zerg is getting them, and then you can afford them), and he made the 2stargate transition fine, he just didn't maintain production. I really don't think it should be a viable choice if you don't see spire tech until the mutas are in your base but that game made it look very, very possible.

storm + archon is easier atleast. Phoenix can work but he stopped making them which you can't do.
Even if he kept making them you just cannot keep up, also the zerg just gets to take the map while harassing you which just lets them make mutas to phoenix at like a 3:1 rate

Stalker/Zealot/Phoenix lose horribly to 35+ mutas, especially 2/1 mutas
The benefit of going phoenix is that you have equal mobility and can expand much more freely. Going colossus rather than blink stalker to support meant he couldn't do that. Sure, they lose, if you have 8 phoenix against 35+ 2:1 mutas with +attack upgrades. If you go armor/shield upgrades mutas start to scale horribly and you can watch a zerg get really upset.
Going phoenix from scratch when the mutas have already popped will result in a loss 100% of the time because you can't keep up with the zerg. Colossus was obviously the wrong choice. To afford the air upgrades and ground upgrades and make multiple stargates isn't feasible with the gas available.

Without ground upgrades stalkers do pitiful damage to mutas and you can't beat mass mass muta with pure phoenix, unless you have 400 apm and perfect mechanics. Mass mass muta has been a known problem for protoss and it still hasn't been perfectly figured out on how to fight it effectively.

The stalkers tank, the phoenix do more than enough damage. So long as you have stalkers to kite back to, the zerg can never, ever engage (since the mutas will auto-target stalkers as phoenix move away). With that in mind you just whittle down the muta ball with your phoenix ball.
This discussion is a bit pointless, as grubby lost nearly all his probes before (he could have GGed right there imho), so he was supposed to have twice as much stuff, in which case it would be fine.

Stalkers can tank muta (they're like the worst cost-dps unit around). They don't have to tank for very long for the absolutely fucking stupid (seriously) dps of phoenixes to kill half the muta ball and force him to run. If the game actually drags out blink + muta's awful scaling against armor upgrades means he fucking has to transition no matter what, even if you never get HT's (assuming you start ground upgrades with your third).
Stalkers actually do a really decent job tanking muta, they just look like they're bad at it because their dps is so fucking awful. Pair them with something that hurts and it's solid - HT's are just really good at filling that role.

You're right, discussing ideas/strategies and their drawbacks after a game where a pretty rarely seen strategy was seen (reactive phoenix) is an awful idea. No one's talking about balance, we're talking about possible answers to mutaling (and whether it's just stalker > HT/archon or not).

The problem is you assuming that Bischu played like shit whereas in reality, Starcraft is about more than just mechanics. Some people get overly hung on up supply blocks and minor slips in macro yet completely ignore unit composition, strategy and good engagements, which Bischu has in spades. The sooner people realise that this real time strategy game actually involves strategy, the better off we will be.

Maybe, but in Broodwar, it was vital to have good mechanics, but the strategical dimension was (is) as important. But you are probably right, i was too hard saying he played like shit (he was good), getting supply capped is a minor annoyance (even if t looks bad) and doesn't change (necessarily) how the game ends. Actually, i'm surprised by Stephano's style on this tournament; he's going so roach heavy... that's not at all what he used to do.

Would probably get an invite spot if he didn't qualify here but since this tournament has a 20k prize pool and is just over the pond it's probably worth his while

I seem to recall him saying he's already qualified for IPL4. This is not only a qualifier, but also a tournament with prizes. Probably if someone who's already qualified for IPL4 gets first place here, the next not-yet-qualified player gets the spot.
On November 19 2011 01:25 Bobster wrote: So this is where all the major EU players are!
Like I said, probably not going to happen. 10k on combined streams for the semis right now... MLG is eating up people's attention.
Great job by Sase so far! Stephano vs Bischu going on right now as well. :o
The fuck.... i love Stephano, i really do, but it pains me to see him playing such a boring (yet effective) style as roaches roaches roaches everywhere. Still, his early game, reading and defense is amazing, and gives him the ability to macro like crazy on the mid game. Then, it just become a slightly boring game of hammering your enemy with lots and lots of roaches.

Exactly, he stated on his stream that he is auto-invited.
Looking at the results, it looks like the right decision to go there for the money.
Nice play by tails, he obviously had a plan in mind and executed it perfectly, perhaps Stephano didn't remember the games of the showmatch but tails for sure did his homework
I'm actually getting scared for stephano, his play doesn't seem really solid today eventhough he had some great result, I'm afraid his confidence is shaken.
Well, other players are specifically preparing strategies against him, but he still manages to do some results, not that bad ^^ but ye, he does seem to make some sloopy moves he didn't do last month.

Yeah, I find that his play overall is worse than in IPL3. But it's the second time (first was slayers vs millienium) I watch him losing to this strat. It seems he has not figure it out yet.
I think his confidence took a fairly big hit while losing to Goody during the Battle in Berlin tournament...it was the first time I'd seen him playing really sloppy ingame and looking vulnerable.

I think stephano's a great guy, but jesus christ this tourney, while a great one, and totally deserving of every credit it gets, wasn't the hardest thing he's ever done.
His run was entirely ZvP (lmao) against MXFive, Dream, Grubby, Bischu, Sase, and Tails. While I'm not doubting any of their quality and talent, which is all present, this isn't a victory that is going to silence stephano's naysayers. Tails, while a great guy, isn't a Code S level korean. He's great, and has proven himself in the team league (once), and there's no denying his talent, but he's not puzzle or oz or any of the other proven korean tosses for example.

He's great, and has proven himself in the team league (once), and there's no denying his talent, but he's not puzzle or oz or any of the other proven korean tosses for example.
naniwa code b beating nestea mvp drg etc. allo ? code b a s means more and more nothing

He beat the players that beat the players. Not Stephanos fault Tails won vs Ryung is it?
But ok lets say he is overrated I doubt he care what people say becuase he keeps winning major lan tournaments and making shitload of money. Overrated pheww. He is doing what no other foriegner player has done before without korean training
Definitely a few very good games at the IPL - definitely want to see how Stephano will be in the next few months, so far he's definitely impressing me.
Thumbs up to TB and Apollo for casting for so many hours despite having colds. I went down to Telford and watched most of the matches live, and I really, really enjoyed it. I couldn't stay for the end unfortunately as it's a Sunday night and I have to work tomorrow.
I though the venue and setup was great. I'd definitely go again. I really hope IPL continue this partnership with Multiplay / Insomnia. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to see such wonderful matches live in the UK.
Well played to the Multiplay staff for keeping a very high production value, TB and Apollo for casting for more than 12 hours while under the blight, and the IPL for giving them Brits a tournament they will remember for quite a while.
And of course well played to the awesome players. I'm glad we'll get to see Tails at IPL4, I really enjoyed his style.
It was an incredible experience, meeting all of these incredible players, being a part of something so huge.
When i signed up as an SC2 admin for i-series back in SC2's beta, I assumed it would just be a little tournament we hosted alongside everything else here at our events... now I have had the chance to meet people like White-Ra (he is 100% as nice as you heard he was) and organize something that I have a passion for. I really hope this is the start of something bigger, and really puts the UK SC2 scene on the map.

<3 IPL
This^^
I've had an absolute blast this event especially hanging out with so many pro players :D
I'll do a blog or something with all the stories from this event, which are pretty crazy
Just checked the brackets... Really REALLY looks like Sase got screwed out of the finals for me. I mean, I guess I have no right to complain since for ages I complained about the extended series rule... Actually I guess overall it makes sense. Just gotta say props to him for taking down tails, ryung, and then going to game 3 against tails again.

Well, if you look at the brackets after the first Tails vs Sase series, it is clear that Tails deserves to be better ranked than Sase. So yeah, this system is better than extended series.
Although, the grand final starting at 2-0 is really messed up.
Also it's clear that Stephano got an easier bracket than Sase...

this and this.
It was such a cool event, so many super friendly players and fans. I live nearby so was able to travel there each day, but I am totally considering staying over next time to cut out the travel and soak up the atmosphere even more
Thanks a lot to all the organisers and players that made it such a good event!
The event was great, thanks!! I took lots of pictures, but as I'm not allowed to link to my page here and don't want to spam the thread with all of them, here are a few

Hopefully we will!!!
I was told IPL wanted them and they aren't gna be released!
I really like IPL, but it would be an enormous marketing error not to let all the shoutcaster on youtube to give them free adversitment... well, that's maybe why MLG is more famous at the moment ... who knows

perhaps thats why they want them, to distrubute them to certain shoutcasters
Cant see why they cant just release them after a certain period of time like MLG
Casting a ton of games today and tomorrow at 5 p.m. PST (40 min. from now) from this tournament! Some were cast previously, but some are fresh and unseen! Come take a look: http://www.ign.com/ipl
Looks like Grubby is quite the PvP sniper. He has such a world class pvp but still not quite the other matchups to go with it; I wonder if this has changed recently, or why that is.
Today's games will feature Adelscott, SaSe, DreAm, HasuObs, Stephano, Grubby, and DarKFoRcE! Starts at 5 p.m. PST (2 hours) like usual! http://www.ign.com/ipl
