Hell no, health bars is needed to see how well the players are playing ... if they target the weakest units, control the weakest units back, or not. The manually selected thing just doesn't give the same information.

NEEDED? You realize this game called BW has been doing fine in Korea for over a decade and it didn't have healthbars. It is called being a competent observer. As a spectator you shouldn't want to be omniscient about every single event that is about to happen--that just takes away from the spectating experience.

Less information can add to the viewing experience. Imagine Blizzard added a tool that gave the statistical win% of one build against another. How would that at all be interesting for the viewer?

Another example: TvZ timing attack before mutalisks pop. In BW you would have to watch the eggs, counting the seconds that mutalisks come out and not knowing exactly the second the pop therefore you wouldn't know exactly (unless you of course are an experienced player and know the timing) who will win the battle. In SC2 this feeling is completely mitigated by observers who rely so heavily on tools like the unit building counter.
