On October 03 2011 14:13 WCG-Tee wrote: It's not an entry fee. You DONT HAVE to give 20$. You can give 5$ if that's what you want. You can also give 100$! It's a donation towards WCG Canada and we want to send opeople to korea. but for that we need a canadian champions, funds and this is how we raise them. In exchange for your great support, we will reward 20$+ donators with an invite to our National Online championship! You HAVE to pay at least 20$ to be able to participate in the tournament so it's indeed an entry fee by definition. You pay to participate and to may be able to win the trip to Korea, the same thing as paying to play at MLG to may be able to win some cash. The people who donate less than 20$ or 20$+ after the bracket cap size of 256 players is reached is to raise more money to send, if possible, more players to Korea. But those donators aren't able to participate in the tournament, so they can't win the trip, this is the difference between the entry fee and a donation. The 1st place prize is paid by the entry fees of all the participants and the funds raised by the donators is used to send more players with the winner. When you donate money, its to help something, you don't expect anything in return (like being able to participate in a sc2 tournament to win a trip to Korea). Just to make you understand maybe more my point, for example, you can't ask donations from people for, let say, bring a rock band to a certain city for a concert and then say only people who pay more than 50$ can come see it and there is a capacity of 20k. It doesn't make any sense. If you pay for something like an entrance to a concert, being able to play in a tournament, admission at a cinema etc. then it's an entry fee not a donation with a "limited reward" if you donate a minimum amount.

So far only those provinces have contracted us and show there support to our fundraiser and like we do for individual donation we reward them with Championship invite. Player from all Canada can get a invite for the Championship if they show there support at the fundraiser. Bc and Quebec qualifier will be on October 23 and the WCG Canada Championship start on October 28. There is not much time for Ontario or any other province to do a Free qualifier for there citizen but all they need to do is donate at least 60$ and run a online tournament. So it's not true that WCG Canada is only for Quebec and BC, it's for all the Canadian who support are fundraiser.

If your province do a free online tournament you can try to have your invite by getting in the top 3. If you miss that opportunity you still can donate and enter the Championship.

So what's the point of running a free online tournament for Qc and BC when the players just need to pay 20$ to go directly to the Canadian Championship? Pretty useless if you ask me.

Had they termed it an entry fee it could be considered income. I could be off on this... It doesn't matter, under the Income Tax Act in Canada this would still be considered business income because it is obtained in the regular course of business, whether the company wants to call it income or not. That's like saying McDonalds could make billions by just asking for donations and giving you a choice of items based on how much you donate...
