The reason extended series are games like Idra vs Thorzain imho. Without extended series the game would have been entirely meaningless to Idra. He was already first in his group no matter if he won or not.
It could also lead to situations were players could be tempted to hand over wins. I think the concept makes a lot of sense. For example imagine Idra and Thorzain would have belonged to the same team.

If you are going to use this excuse you should accept how many tournaments MC was playing and focusing on at the same time in TSL while Thorzain only focused on MC, and Thorzain won with an immediately nerfed strat after being 2-2. Thorzain also did a typical one base terran versus MC to win his second game this time, I'm going to watch the replays but I bet it was the same tank/marine/banshee that he did to Naniwa multiple times. MC won 4 macro games and lost one.

that doesn't make any sense, if it was a normal bo3 the games would have played out differently
