About

The Prodigy Team Star League (PTSL) is aiming to fill the gap in the current StarCraft II© e-sports movement by introducing a premiere 2v2 tournament league. Initially starting as an invitational tournament, the PTSL aims to add an open bracket component in future seasons and continue to build on itself and evolve with the help of the StarCraft II© online community. As a tournament dreamt up by fans for fans, the PTSL is looking to change how 2v2 games are looked at by bringing casted high-level matches to the masses.

Tournament Breakdown:
  • $1200 Season 1 prize pool: $750 First Place, $300 Second Place, $150 Third Place
  • 8 Pro 2v2 Teams comprised of some of the best professional StarCraft II© players
  • 2 Custom 2v2 maps created by the ICCup Mapmaker prodiG
  • Games casted live by Kevin "CatsPajamas" Knocke and Josh "AskJoshy" Suth
  • Live stream and VODs provided free of charge
  • Players’ team voice chat streamed alongside the casted live stream.

Also, wanted to give a big shout-out to coL.Stalife for helping Allan and I put this whole thing together. Unfortunately we overbooked so he was not able to enter a team into season 1 but he's been instrumental in signing up all of the amazing pro teams that we have for this season.

why there is no open bracket? there are so many great 2v2 players out there and you mostly invited 1v1 players to play 2v2?

This tournament is basically a proof-of-concept invitational similar to the IPL season 1. We hadn't ever put a tournament together before and wanted to be able to make sure we were able to deliver a product to the fans that was up to our own high quality standards. There are really only two of us working on the entire tournament with help from several people like coL.Stalife and others behind the scenes doing specific tasks.

That being said; We fully intend to add an open bracket (leaning towards 32man) if this season goes well. We hope to have it implemented for the second season but will have it in the third season at the latest.

Unfortunately not. It's already going to be a lot of streaming time just for these 8 teams.

I'm really interested in the casting format. I love the idea of being able to hear each team's voice. But how is it actually going to work with casting? Whats to stop the players from using 3rd party software instead, or not speaking at all?

Also, is each match going to have 3 versions? (one with casters, one with team1 voice, one with team2 voice)

Or is it just going to be 1 version that crams everybody speaking together?

Well it doesn't say anywhere that it's race locked, but now that you bring it up it'd be good to know.

What we're doing to make it simple is to have the main video stream with the casters and then have two audio streams which will be on the same page and can be turned on or off whenever the viewer wants. We don't have any rules in place saying what communication software (Skype, vent, mumble, in-game, etc.) the players have to use or if they have to speak at all, but we know some/most teams will use a third party software to communicate and we will have a listener in on those streams.

You can see the streaming layout we've made to make everything more simple here: http://www.ptsl.tv/stream.html

We currently have no rules in respect to team makeup but will be keeping our eyes and ears open so that if an issue arises it can be properly dealt with for season 2 and beyond.

I'm pretty sure that all will be between optikzero / select and power/hacKproTech. By watching their streams, i can say that the result depends a lot on the maps. ( choke together or no like on scorched heaven optik with select are just unbeattable ). Well gl for those great teams. I'm so happy about this tournament ! :D

To be honest, we were really looking to pull in pros from the 1v1 scene due to their existing fan base. This first tournament is more to get exposure and see how this whole 2v2 tournament plays out. Once we get everything worked out with this first tournament, we hope to be adding the open bracket which will allow a lot of the under appreciated existing 2v2 teams to come out and show how they stack up against the 1v1 pros everyone knows and loves.

I bet protech and power will win, they are so strong together.
They'll only have problems in end game, since the 1v1 players are more experienced there.
But the challenge for the non-protech teams, will be to survive the early game

predictions:
1. protech/power
2. select/optik
3. not sure, but i'd say the EG team

Stupid question but have the streams been tested to run the audio at the same time? I forsee a lag issue with the streams. Also is there anyway people can help out the tourney? I would like to help anyway possible.

P.s. - Thank you for this tourney super excited.

In order to take the stress off of any one internet connection or computer we're having 3 separate streamers on 3 separate streams for the tournament. We'll have one of the casters streaming the main video / casted stream and then two other people who will be in the team's skype/mumble/vent and streaming that on their respective streams.

Gotcha sounds like that will hopefully get rid of the lag issue. But will they be out of sync at all as I have noticed that when two players are streaming(on j.tv) one will be ahead of the other, thus seeing the outcome of the game quicker then the other stream. Thank you for the quick response.

the guys that stream the conversations, wouldn't it be cool if they also streamed from their respective teams first person view while swiching between player cams or chosing one person to follow ?

Would be cool to see. But would need some sort of production switcher. Also watching like 6 streams at once is intense, unless of course they cut back and forth between each stream/firstperson view; still very intense Guaranteed.

This would be our ideal setup however because of our limited resources and the fact that we've never streamed a tournament before (let alone 3 streams for the same one) we've opted to keep it as simple as we can while still offering some cool features that haven't been seen before.

i played power in 1v1, he was terran and i was random (i got terran, so TvT)

he opened no wall-in, no scout, and went right into 1 raven with a viking and moved them over to the side of his base where my cloaked banshee was coming in from.

when i checked the replay he still had no idea what spawn i was at or which race i was.

sorry, but i dont have the replay anymore, just a heads up

I've always opened 2 port in tvt if I'm not fast expanding... even before I started using iEchoic's build. Did I happen to do it to you on a 4 player map without scouting? Did you have a scout that gave away your location? and you dont have replay? Don't make false accusations.

it wasnt 2 port, it was a 4 player map and my scouting wouldnt have given away my location, and you didnt know my race before opening and placing it near the side of my starport

this wasnt iechoics build either that you were doing

but you are right, i dont have the replay and i made that post as a warning for the admins, not to attack you, sorry if you get offended

Technically the top 2v2 team (haCkProTech/Power) is in the tournament... well they were until very recently, they're ranked 2nd in the world now.

Yeah "technically"^^

Sadly you can't compare points from EU and NA like that, just take a look at the 1v1 rankings atm. The best EU player Happy is 48th in the world overall and US players like Vibe, optikzero or sixjaxMajor are above him and therefore above every EU player.

I think it's very possible that kara+Delphi is the best 2v2 team in the world... or at least top3 as I said^^

That's why we're looking forward to the addition of the open bracket in future seasons, it will be a lot more work but we all feel like it will be more than worth it.

Great idea, I love how all the fanboys come out and will just predict oh! EG team or SeleCt etc, but the logic behind these guys makes no sense.

Why would the #1 ranked 2v2 team in the world, the player who has not only the #1 ranked team but I believe the #3 ranked team not be the favourite to win? I guess sometimes people just say things without thinking, well most of the time that is the case.

They are the clear favourites and hopefully they can become a household name like the rest. Good luck Mike and show the world SC2 is easy and that bghers own. ^^

Protech and I are 2-1 against select/optikzero and we look forward to playing them again.

Select and Optikzero's win streaks are against Protech's double zerg team, which is unable to deal with phoenix effectively because of the unit compositions. Tanks+Voids? nothing zerg has can touch that.

I think protech / power will take this

they have the optimal team makeup - zerg for map control, macro / easy reproduction of units and terran for fortified defense and powerful units (any team without zerg is at a disadvantage imo)

they also have played mass amounts of games together which puts them at big advantage over teams who are somewhat new to the 2v2 style of play.. go protech / power!!

The players races are listed in the Teams section, however they are not final and still are able to be changed.

I think 2v2 has a very good chance of becoming popular simply because most casual players (the main body of viewers) seem to prefer team games to 1v1's, so naturally they would probably enjoy watching them as well.

We're hoping so too. We're getting excited and anxious about the turnout. Right now we're still working hard to get everything together in time for the tournament (not a small task there are only two of us putting the whole thing together). We're hoping to be able to deliver a unique viewing experience and are looking forward to some amazing games!

Yeah, they're for real. Put them up against a couple of these teams of 1v1 players that are trying to adjust to 2v2 and it won't even be competitive. The tourney should come down to them and select/optikzero, would be pretty surprised if either of them lose to another team.

Protech/Power are going to take this ^.^. All the other teams are just 1v1 players teaming up with someone on their team (Other than Axlav/Streifco, haven't they been doing 2v2's since WC3?).

I'd expect Select/Opticzero or Axlav/Streifco to take second.

Can't wait to see how this tourney goes ^.^.^.^

weird that select isnt playing with one of the dignitas guys. I think he and nani would be amazing, or killer.

There actually may be some team changes in the works due to FXO going to korea. I will post again when things are all figured out.

We've already picked up an EU 2v2 professional team to fill the slot and are waiting for SeleCT to name the replacement for his team. I will make an announcement once everything is all figured out.

kAra and Delphi or Aristo and Cubert if you need replacements. Undoubtly Europes best 2v2 teams. Ai also has a good 2v2.

Official Announcement

Unfortunately, we've been informed that FXOSheth and FXOMoonan will be unable to play in the tournament. However, we are excited to announce that Dahli and Pythonas from team MYM will be filling the empty slot. The Danish brothers have been playing together professionally since the days of SC:BW so we're looking forward to some awesome games from this veteran team!

Edit: SeleCT will still be playing with OpTiKzErO as originally planned.

I haven't bothered to involve myself too much so far, but seeing that a European team got a spot makes me want to creep out of my little hideout and show some love for the tournament hosts/and players.

This is great! I am delighted to see Dahli and Pythonas in this tournament. Dahli and Pythonas work excellent together and I'd say they are absolutely one of the strongest lineups Europe has to offer at the moment. I do think they will have to bring their A-game to come out on top of this (to compensate for the delay-issues! ), but the most important thing about them is that they seem to be a bit unorthodox compared to most other teams around. It will definately be an interesting watch.

Now I'm not going to go out here and trashtalk any of these teams, or anyone for that matter, but I would like to disagree slightly with your opinion here. Aristeo and Cubert dominated 2v2 in Europe for a long time. No one is going to deny this. But cubert stopped playing sc2 a few months ago and I don't know if he's fully returned, seeing him online only now and then, and more importantly if they have regained what they had before he left. Cubert and Aristeo had quite a lot of timings nailed down in the early game, and punished everyone that came into close proximity because the 2v2 meta game wasn't really established yet, as well as any protoss team being less viable due to the lack of solid "non-panicking/non-crazyboy" strategies. They had a solid mid/late-game as well, but I would definately say that the early game was their strongest element. Now, not writing a story about the 2v2 legends, just trying to say that I believe several teams have caught up to them.

Then you have Kara and Delphi. Both Ronald McGrandmasters, so great players undoubtfully. They are also doing well in most tournaments they play in, and are among the highest ranked teams on the ladder. Yet, they have recently switched back from TZ to their main races, PZ, so it will be interesting to follow them and see how it affects their play.

Anyways, what I wanted to express was the following: When you'r stating something as bold as "Undoubtly Europes best 2v2 teams", I get a little bit disappointed. Maybe they are the best, maybe they'r not. Hard to tell. The problem is that 2v2 has a lot smaller community and definately a smaller fanbase than 1v1. Additionally, people are way more ignorant as to whom are among the top teams.

Currently, it seems to be really hard to make a name for yourself, because there's few-to-no platforms to show yourself off at (Even though EU has been hosting small (but still excellent) tourneys weekly for months, EG Master's cup has picked up 2v2 as a small, but still important element, I guess the ladder counts for something and now PTSL arrives at our door - A big step in the right direction for 2v2).

I don't know what you base your statement on, but maybe it's just your opinion, which of course you are fully entitled to, so no harm feelings ^-^ I just feel sorry for the other, imo. at least 4-6 other teams in Europe that are in a position worthy of rivaling for such a "title". Maybe Arne and Vipro are the best (<3)? But since they haven't been picked up by a pro team like MyM (yet) and they don't have fanboys shouting their names out on the TL-forums, noone hardly notice them, even though they are filled with awesomeness. Share the love <3

But yeah, this has been kind of off-topic I guess. Loads of props to the ptsl hosts. I'm really looking forward to the tournament PyDahli fighting!!!

I don't agree with you in a one, we were most macro-oriented and defensive AT and rarely lost long games. Thats why we had big winrate against other top-teams, who had problems with early or late game. Because of that one top-team in Europe doesn't exist, the same as on US server. 5+ teams can win each other with nearly 50% wr.

I'm glad an EU team got the chance to participate, but I can't help but feel disappointed that only one team was contacted regarding the replacement (?) ...

Unfortunately we were put into a bit of a bind when we got the news that the FXOpen team might not be able to play but luckily we had both mousesports and MYM contact us after we had announced the tournament inquiring about any open spots which we didn't have at the time. So, it was decided we would contact both of the teams and the first one to reply would be given the team spot.

We're extremely excited for the tournament and can't believe its just over 24 hours away already. We can't wait to see how 2v2 will play out in a professional tournament!

I'm so excited for this. I still remember the epic SeleCT/OpTiKzErO run vs tehredbandit/ProTech. Excited for EG (Axlav/StrifeCro) - they were absolute beasts but haven't heard about their 2v2 recently. The coL players are also all accomplished individually, so it'll be nice to see what they'll bring to the table. GL HF

Very excited for this tournament!

Only downside is that day 1 is a bit brutal for us Europeans, I have to get up early on Saturday so 2 am is too late to start watching stuff. Days 2 and 3 are sweet though, can't get much better than 7 pm

This sounds awesome, I will most certainly watch it. I'm betting on PowerTech, they were by a large margin on top of the NA 2v2 ladder before they switched to smurf accounts. Hard to call though, I'm excited to watch.

If Destiny is streaming FPV, then win or lose, it'll be super entertaining as he yells at Minigun to stop being awful, lol.

Holy shit, the Warprism page for the stream is pretty cool. Switching between the audios is actually pretty entertaining. Well done.

Only complaint is that the volume level of them is so different it takes a bit of volume micro every time you switch.

You all realize there is an alt stream right?

http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/PTSL-Ardivan if all you want is casting without the heavy Warp Prism processing. You could just load up the team on WP you want to listen to and mute the main stream if you really need it.

Really nice play by Mr. Jones and Mr. Bonnell :D

the only stream quality that works is Best and it cuts out for 5seconds every 10-15seconds, you really need a new streamer, not talking about none of the VOIP streams working.. and yes i already tried watching through justin.tv/ptsl website/teamliquid/warpprism

I'm pretty sure CatZ and Drewbie have some really sick 2v2 strats, I think they're going to take it.

The brackets show who won. Lemme see if i remember right...(with short game summaries)
+ Show Spoiler +
Team Destiny beat mYm 2-0 in 2 epic macro games. Infestors using neural and great harass.

Team EG beat Team VT 2-0. First game VT tried a timing attack (had to regame but VT did same strat) and EG countered and won. Game two EG went early pool and proxy 2 raxes for quick win.

Then just finished Team Powertech vs Assasins (Catz/Drewbie). Assassins won 2-0. Both teams opened ling hellion. Drewbie tech to banshee game 1 skipping blue flame. Nice positioning. Banshees did good damage. From the skype call Drewbie was feeding Catz some resources to get tons of roaches. Assassins won game 1.
Then game 2 they both open same strat of ling/hellion. Powertech team manages to snipe Drewbie's reactor. Drewbie techs straight to starport for banshees. Powertech team goes for catz with ling/hellion. Catz gets some roaches up but loses all his drones. But on powertech team there aren't any marines out yet and zerg has 2 queens only. Drewbie does damage to terran and catz just counterattacks zerg. Powertech team gg's out.

I'm watching it on the warpprism special page for it and it's fine. Was laggy for a bit but got ironed out after the opening of game 1 VT vs mYm. Seems like the past 2 series have some in-game voice problems. Like seemed like no mYm audio for the games vs VT.

EDIT: Also Best quality seems to be the least laggy quality to watch at.

Ummm to you guys saying the casters are not paying attention to the chat and comments...they're using a delay server so no one can cheat. It's delayed by 5mins. So they only know about the comments 5mins after the problem first arises.

Ya. They know. The first casting duo (adibisi and wombat) before catspajamas and askjoshy mentioned the delay server. Also mentioned that Best quality is the best since any lower quality is done by encoding servers by Justin.TV. And basically the lag problem on lower than best quality is due to a problem with Justin.TV servers.

Also mentioned about the audio streams that basically they're running 3 different streams; for each team and for the casters. And it's not surprising it gets out of sync and have some technical difficulties because of that. Hope the VODs get good production to fix sync issues, etc.

EDIT: Seeing how the event is over a weekend they might not be able to fix all the problems but it'll provide a good guide to their 2nd season (which I really hope they will do). Perhaps in future seasons they'll try to do it prerecorded to help with technical issues. Still would be problematic I guess with having 3 streams to have the different audio channels. Overall I would say it's been alright. Some nice games. Interesting to bounce back and forth between team chat and casters where casters wondering wth a player is doing and the player saying he has no idea what he is doing. LOL.

NOTICE: We understand the issues with the lag and agree its completely unbearable and unreasonable. We've been in contact with Justin.tv in order to resolve these issues and should have it figured out and fixed for tomorrows cast. Because of the use of the Delay server we were unable to troubleshoot the stream while the tournament was running. Rest assured we were very aware of the issues and were trying to handle it in a way that would be fair to the players and viewers. There are only 2 of us putting this tournament on with the help of our casters so please bear with us.

Just wanted to quote this for emphasis, Ben and Allan are two of the most dedicated guys I've seen organizing a tournament, and everyone knows streaming issues often kinda fall under the category of acts of god, and it gets even more complicated when they're doing something as ambitious as having casters + independent audio streams as well as admining the entire tournament.

Here's to the rest of the tournament, were some really awesome games today and I think they will only get better. Catz/Drewbie vs Protech/Power was an awesome series, Minigun/Destiny vs MYM was great too~.

I liked seeing a 2v2 tournament. :-)

For future events, please invite the really good european teams like:

Drewbie, I told that overall US ladder on January was better than EU (mostly because helion-build for TZ). Even with our old builds we didn't find there any team won us more than bo1 for 100+ games. When we brought helions on EU - ladder was improved and much more hard to play. Imho skill of top-10 teams is nearly equal.

Well two maps were made by prodiG. They tried to do a reddit thing like last month....
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/hks6s/help_the_ptsl_choose_part_of_our_map_pool/

Few people replied to that. And also how do you define it as "stupid"?? Unless I'm mistaken this is pretty much one of the first dedicated 2v2 tournaments. Or at least one of the first that seems to get more coverage. And the community generally doesn't discuss map imbalances for 2v2. Would be nice to hear what the players think about it. I remember tuning in to ProTech team's audio stream to hear them say the new map created "Deconstructed" feels really long.

Probably more construtive to follow the format of that reddit thread. Suggest maps for the future and why.

Maybe it would be way better to ask dedicated 2on2 players with different matchups about their opinions about the 2on2 maps, instead of a random reddit followship who play 2v2s just for fun from time to time.

Blizzard didnt took out those two maps for random. They had reasons about it and even blogged the reasons.

Tarsonis has a wayyyyyy to huge ramp and it is very very hard to defend early allins on seperated bases with this huge ramp.

Blizzard has been clear their ladder map pool isn't for competitive play. They asked reddit because this is a new tournament that hasn't been done in SC2 much. And there aren't really many dedicated 2v2 players for teams. How many teams have them....EG, mYm, mouz, perhaps some others. And they commonly play 2v2s in tournaments using Blizzard map pools. And there's little data saying like "On this map TZ beats other race combinations more than 60% of the time at the highest 2v2 level".

The map pool seems to be a mix. Some rush favoured with separated players. Also some maps where defending and expanding is easier. Probably aiming for mix of rush and macro maps. Because it's not like it's definitive that players and spectators want to watch macro matches only for 2v2. Early rush tactics in 2v2 are a lot more interesting and exciting to watch than in 1v1. Each pro team will obviously propose maps that favour their team combination. Instead they select some maps and see how the games go. If one map looks bad then they remove it and put in a new map for future tournaments.

He and minigun will be playing team PowerTech in the losers bracket after this match.

When are the final 3 matches played? Winner-bracket finals -> Loser's finals and Grand Finals?

Those will be tomorrow starting at 1pm EST / 10am PST. It will be winners bracket finals, and losers bracket finals BO5 and then the final match will be BO7. Winner of the winners bracket needs to win 1 series to take it, winner of losers bracket needds to win 2 series.

It's a double elimination format...so in Winner's bracket finals it's EG vs Assassins. Then the loser of that goes to loser's bracket final vs Sup Son. Then winner bracket final winner vs loser bracket final winner. Well Catz/Drewbie are one of the better 2v2 players on a pro team right now. And Sup Son does a turtley get to lategame style which is really scary with a PT combo in mid-late game.

One big thing which I think a lot of people overlook is that the winner of the winners bracket only needs to win 1 series while the winner of the losers bracket needs to win 2 series to take it.

Go Drewbie and CatZ! Beasting through this tournament along with team EG as expected. Also I'm glad to see SeleCT and OptikZero doing well.

Hopefully I can catch the games later today. I haven't even seen this tournament until just now.

Edit:

Aren't there 3 teams? SeleCT/Optik, Drewbie/CatZ and Axslav/Strifecro?

Also a bit off topic, that's so strange that there is a team without a zerg, and they are doing well. Either way if those are the 3 teams left, those are also the 3 I wanted to do the best so I'm happy with the results so far.

I don't know much about SeleCT/FXOpTiKzErO, except ladder games. But ladder is nothing, teams need to show skill on tourneys/clan wars. So for me coL and EG are more experienced.

Tried the "Skype stream" for a few games, it was actually pretty cool to hear what they thought was going on based on scouting while seeing it yourself from the caster POV.

Not sure if this has been answered by any of the tournament admins, but will there be a section for organized VOD's or will we have to try and match up the Skype streams w/ the casted stream?

Unfortunately at this time we have no way of setting up the VODs with the team skype calls.

Never watched a high level 2v2, nice event. Only complaint would be some bad observing at points. That last game you totally missed the storms from Catz towards the end and were focusing on a few banelings being targeted.

This was great, another one would be amazing! Also CatZ if you're still around, do you have any opinion on the 2 custom maps created for the PSTL? Would love to hear what any of the guys thought about them, they certainly seem better than the Blizzard maps.

The mods mentioned in chat that future seasons would have an open tournament system so the best 2v2 teams can make it in. Some teams might still get invited in. Format of future seasons seems uncertain now. They say they hope to make this monthly. Not confirmed on that. Not sure if they'll give preference to 2v2 teams from professional SC2 teams. Some teams had bad showings but others looked really good. A pure open tournament format (possibly with double elimination) might work. Depends how many teams apply I guess....which would be linked with the prize pool.

I also wonder about the sponsorship of this event. I'm not really clear about how the tournament organisers fund it. Don't wanna see it have financial problems.

The mods talked about them asking players now after it's over what they think needs improving and changing. There was a like feedback email address given out in chat. The community was invited to give suggestions on improvements etc. Since it was chat I say posting the email should be fair game :

Wow, just started watching the VODs of this, even though I had a little trouble figuring it out by the naming conventions, any frustrations I had in finding and syncing them disappeared as I actually watched the games while switching between commentary and skype-talk...

What an amazing idea for a tournament, look forward to seeing possible future tournaments.

In terms of open bracket or invites, I think having a mix would be the best option. People don't want to watch a bunch of random guys they haven't heard of go at it in a 2v2 tournament, but allowing some new names to actually come up sounds like a good idea.

The basic idea we've been throwing around is 12 invite spots and 4 open spots. Then we'd have a 32man open tournament to fill those 4 spots.

This tournament deserve a lot more attention than it has gotten in my opinion. From a spectators point of view it looks very well organized. The homepage looks great with both layout and content. Love how it includes information about the teams/players.

Very well done by everyone involved running this. Excited to see what season 2 brings!

We're hoping to get the open bracket in the next 1-2 months. It all depends, there is only 2 of us working on this entire tournament

Would it be possible to upload the Skype audio data separately? Then i can watch a VOD and start the audio at the same time.

Im trying to improve in team games so it would be useful to learn how pros communicate and what they point out when scouting.

Right now the only way to do this is to access the raw VODs on the justin.tv channels and match them up yourself. They main channel is justin.tv/ptsl and the two audio channels are justin.tv/ptslstream1 and justin.tv/ptslstream2.

Many of these guys actually do play 2vs2 together, and are pretty damn good.

I'm surprised drewbie and catz won. I was tipping on Select, they have really good strategies.

Oh yeah, I love how the map pool has real 2vs2 macro maps. We should have some in the ladder as well.
