Casting

We're going to be doing casting a little different from how most people normally do qualifiers. I'll get the first talking point out of the way first - we are not streaming live qualifiers. We were trying to figure out a way to improve the qualifier viewer experience, which is normally large amounts of time of casters trying to find games, waiting for players to finish games, checking the brackets, etc. What we are trying for IPL 2 Qualifiers is that we will be allowing anyone to check out the brackets up to the round of 32, and then at that point the games will still be played, but the results and replays will be sent directly to me. Then, during the week we will have a crew of casters pick some of the best matches from the Round of 32 and on and stream for you guys! The schedule follows:

Week 1 Broadcast Dates:
May 12th - IPL Qualifier Thursday with AskJoshy, starting at 3 PM PDT

FnaticMSITTOne vs MillDieStar
MillTarson vs EGLzGaMeR
SixjaxViBE vs MouzHasuobs

May 13th - IPL Qualifier Friday with Raelcun, starting at 3 PM PDT

Iefnaij vs FnaticFenix
MYMCloud vs LiquidRet
FnaticNightend vs coLstalife

Week 2 Broadcast Dates:
May 16th - CatsPajamas IPL Mondays (RO 32) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 17th - EdwardStarcraft IPL Tuesdays (RO 16) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 18th - Raelcun IPL Wednesdays (RO 8) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 19th - AskJoshy IPL Thursdays (Semi-Finals/Finals) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT

Week 3 Broadcast Dates:
May 23th - CatsPajamas IPL Mondays (RO 32) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 24th - EdwardStarcraft IPL Tuesdays (RO 16) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 25th - Raelcun IPL Wednesdays (RO 8) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 26th - AskJoshy IPL Thursdays (Semi-Finals/Finals) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT

Week 4 Broadcast Dates:
May 30th - CatsPajamas IPL Mondays (RO 32) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
May 31th - EdwardStarcraft IPL Tuesdays (RO 16) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
June 1st - Raelcun IPL Wednesdays (RO 8) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT
June 2nd - AskJoshy IPL Thursdays (Semi-Finals/Finals) - 3 PM PDT to 6 PM PDT

We will then reveal the full RO 32 bracket on Friday and update our website and the main IPL 2 thread with those who qualified!

Thank you everyone who applied to cast the IPL 2, we got flooded with applications and I really appreciate the interest. The casters picked to cast the IPL 2 Qualifiers does not absolutely mean they will be casting the IPL 2 Main Event (aside from CatsPajamas, of course) so your applications are not out the window until we make final decisions for IPL 2!

4) Click on 'Account'
5) Fill out your NORTH AMERICAN SERVER BNet Character Name, Character Code, and Race, then put in the League that you are highest ranked at (ex. you're masters on NA and grandmasters on EU, put grandmasters) and MAKE SURE TO COPY/PASTE YOUR NORTH AMERICAN BATTLE.NET PROFILE URL into the designated space

Restrictions

• Player must be in a Master or Grand Master league on the North American, South American or European ladder to participate and LIVE in one of those regions.
• All games must be played on the North American server for both the qualifier and the main event.
• Account sharing is not allowed, players must own a North American account.
• By signing up for the qualifiers, it is agreed that the player will be available on the following dates leading up to the main event of the tournament (in the event that the player is eligible):

On June 11th we will do WR 1, WR 2 and LR 1, LR 2
On June 12th we will do WR 3, WR 4 and LR 3, LR 4, LR 5
On June 18th we will do WR Finals and LR 6, LR 7
On June 19th we will do LR Finals and Grand Finals

If you will be at Dreamhack or GSL Super Tournament we will work with you to play your games early! No exceptions will be tolerated for the scheduled dates unless you have a seriously urgent issue. If a player wins a qualifying spot and fails to be present for the tournament, IGN reserves the right to find the next highest finisher from the qualifier as a replacement. The penalty for a qualifier no show is a two season ban for future IPL qualifiers.

Seeding

The top 4 finishers from IPL 1 receive seeds 1 through 4 in order of their finishes. The place awarded to the player in the qualifiers will determine the seed for the IPL 2 Main Event, descending from seed 5, in order of qualifier. For example, if a player were to finish first in the first qualifier, he will receive the overall seed of 5. If a player finished first in the second qualifier, he would receive the overall seed of 6.

Rules

All qualifier rules are located at the tournament page on Z33K - http://www.z33k.com/starcraft2/tournaments/710-ign-pro-league-season-two-qualifier-1

Hey Alex, have you thought of maybe using something like Challonge for brackets when the player pool is decided; reading previous threads you have done it all in text like:

A vs B
A goes to winners round 1
B goes to losers round 1
etc.

I think a visual depiction would be much easier to understand and more useful and challonge is pretty good with brackets

I'd vote for Raelcun as caster he is awesome

We have the bracket up on the IPL website for the actual main event, and we're working on making it getting it updated quicker then it was for IPL 1.

I took a cursory glance at the list so far, and here's some the big names in the sc2 scene registered thus far (if I missed you, I'm sorry!)

mouzNova
mouzHasuobs

Grubby

I am so freaking excited, there's a crazy amount of great talent and SC2 history here.

PS. Didn't post this to start a debate on the quality of players that I considered big names, just to let everyone know some of the talent pool of the IPL qualifiers. I can't wait to see who qualifies! Will we get an unknown winner in the first qualifier or will it be dominated by the insanely strong players already signed up?

Also, keep in mind that you can sign up and check in for tomorrow's qualifier until about 5 minutes before the event starts, so don't think you're too late to sign up!

Last reminder, we will be removing from the player list anyone who does not fit the qualification requirements for either geographic area or ladder ranking (qxc fix your ladder ranking, you're not in diamond, and I almost remove you everytime I go through the list).

As I understand it, semis and finals results of each qualifier won't be posted until after the casts. I'm not sure about the rest. Either way, can't wait to cast. =D

Cant believe that such a great qualifier with such big names will not be casted live, and that many rounds not be shown at all.

Was so looking forward to this today, makes me quite angry tbh.

You realize the qualifiers have over 400 people participating, right? To show every game would take weeks straight. =P

Well, obviously all rounds can't be casted, but they should at least make the cast live. All this "stream cheating" is really exaggerated.
European tournaments like Black Dragon League or ESL Dailymotion Cup are casted live and no one complained about "stream cheating".

Where did I say I want to see every game? I said whole rounds will not be casted, not individual games.

At least my impression was that they would only show games starting from round of 32. While it starts at round of 1024. And that they will not show any games today, but only 5/6 days after they are played.
If that is really the case, then of course I am disappointed.
Never heard any other tournament of that caliber where it is done that way,

I was looking forward to watching the different streams for the qualification round today.

Really disappointing

EDIT: If players wanted to stream their matches, would you be against it? Only talking about the early rounds of course, not the ones that will be streamed later in teh week.

Sure do wish that these were being streamed today in some capacity. But then again I'm the type of person that would watch the GSL qualifiers if they streamed those too ^^

This qualifier is going to be pretty stacked.

Check-in is now started, please keep in mind you can continue to sign up for the event during this time.

As for streaming correct, we are delaying the streams of this until Thursday and Friday this week to make sure we have everything setup correct, and next week we will begin streaming games on Monday through Thursday. Also, correct, player streams aren't allowed. I know this is unusual but we want to 1) minimize the chance of cheating and 2) maintain creative control over IPL related content. Sorry to disappoint but we think the streams during the week will make sure for not being able to watch it live.

I can understand your decision, but you had said in previous threads that there would be a large amount of casters just casting live whichever game they feel like. I understand saving the Ro32 and beyond for later in order to give it the glossy finish that we all love, but I have no idea why in these Round of 512/256/128/64 matches that all we'll be able to do is see the results as they come in on z33k.

Sigh. Well, with all that had been going well with IPL, I guess I'll just look past this little stumble.

This is a big tournament and bo3 is the best decision even if it's a 1k players qualifier.

MLG Shakuras is the old version of Shakuras, right?
Shall we play on that, or use the new version?

Edit: Nvm, I just found the v1.2 too ^_^

You think the long waiting periods between matches is disruptive to the viewing experience so your solution is to not broadcast any of them? Eh?

Pretty sure he explained their reasoning here :

Check-in is now started, please keep in mind you can continue to sign up for the event during this time.

As for streaming correct, we are delaying the streams of this until Thursday and Friday this week to make sure we have everything setup correct, and next week we will begin streaming games on Monday through Thursday. Also, correct, player streams aren't allowed. I know this is unusual but we want to 1) minimize the chance of cheating and 2) maintain creative control over IPL related content. Sorry to disappoint but we think the streams during the week will make sure for not being able to watch it live.

Its understandable, but very disappointing ^^

We will be broadcasting matches during the week instead of taking up time with a lower quality production on the weekend when there's so much else to watch (ie. TSL in 30 minutes)

Surprisingly low turnout for the first qual...i think the TLOpen was like this as well?
Hopefully subsequent qualifiers have more players!

hmm also not to take a jab at the IPL cause they are doing such a great job so far compared to past leagues. But why isn't there a small cash prize for the qualifier tournament winner. Cause as much as some pro players just love Sc2, sometimes they are a bit short sighted and need to be lead to a gold mine with a carrot on a stick.

Looking at the brackets, my predictions to qualify:

Darkforce
White-ra
Tyler
TT1
Elfi
Tarson
Destiny
NightEnd (or Grubby)

Some people have relatively easy sections (Destiny has probably the easiest way through). Tyler doesn't have a bad bracket either. Should be him or Drewbie qualifying.

Nerchio, Ret, Lalush, Whitera, Goody, Cloud, Insolence all fighting for a single spot. Wow that section is stacked. Whereas other ones are almost completely devoid of any pros. Sucks how random brackets sometimes come out.

I don't understand why you used random brackets. Surely some ladder (bnet? TLPD?) could have been used to seed players.

Winning your section only gets you to RO16 so you'll still have to win one more series, likely against the winner of section 8

We are POSTPONING the tournament until the same start time tomorrow, 10:30 AM PDT, to give time for z33k to finish fixing the servers. Sorry for the trouble everyone, z33k is working hard on making sure the same issues don't happen tomorrow.

If you are in the middle of a match or about to start one, go ahead and finish it and wait to report the results. Otherwise, come back tomorrow at the same start time and we'll finish everything then!

Seriously, this is not very cool :/ A lot of us adults tend to make plans in advanced, it's hard to find the time to take an entire day off to play a tournament when you live a busy life. Especially on mothers day.

If you are in the middle of a match or about to start one, go ahead and finish it and wait to report the results. Otherwise, come back tomorrow at the same start time and we'll finish everything then!

so.. you expect me to play a all-day tournament on mothers-day? sigh...

Seriously, this is not very cool :/ A lot of us adults tend to make plans in advanced, it's hard to find the time to take an entire day off to play a tournament when you live a busy life. Especially on mothers day.

No offense, but if you made plans for tomorrow you clearly had no intention of advancing in the tournament far enough to quality anyway, so you have little right to be complaining and should simply submit your forfeiture. Anyone serious about making the top 8 in this thing blocked out the two days necessary to do so.

It's better to do this on mother's day than on a weekday as people have work/school/real lives during the week. There really is no choice but to do it tomorrow so I don't see what all the complaints are about. I don't think IGN can push each qualifier back a week since they probably have some sort of schedule they are running on for the main tournament.

It's not like tomorrow is the only qualifier. There are still 3 more chances. No one likes the situation but there isn't really much of a choice.

agree but people will always find things to complain about, thats the internet

Even if you completed like 2 or 3 rounds (and most people have) you would of only had 1-2 more rounds until you would have stopped to play until tomorrow anyway.

So what would they have done if they won another round or two? complain that its a two day tournament the next day?

Give me a break...

A lot of people are done through round 3 or 4 anyways, so we don't have all that much catchup to do, and if we end up starting to run late we'll run the rest of the matches at some point during the week. Maybe ro8 and beyond or something similar, only if we start to run significantly late in the day.

Thanks for being patient guys.

A problem occurred with the load balancer early on in the tournament, resulting in fewer servers being available in the fleet. This, combined with a configuration problem on the master database server, resulted in significant slowness, specifically for match reporting. We had finished our migration to new servers last night and sadly did not pick this up in our testing.

The problems are now fixed, and we will be monitoring the server closely tomorrow.

z33k remains committed to building a reliable sc2 tournament platform, and in the coming weeks we will be doing a number of development projects to drastically improve performance. I understand it can be frustrating, but if you feel strongly about it, consider helping us out by showing support in any way you can. Thanks!

Also guys, a lot of people ended up just figuring out who they were going to play next and played them. The bracket is not exactly where I wanted it after night one, but it's relatively close to our stopping point anyways, so our goal for tomorrow is a smooth, easy finish for this bracket. A lot of us, including me, have mothers hoping for a phone call or visit, so I get that. Thanks for your patience today!

With the Ign qualifiers, if you dont make it in the first one does that prohibit you from signing up for the second?

PLAYERS: MAKE SURE AT THE ROUND OF 32, YOU STOP SUBMITTING REPLAYS AND RESULTS TO Z33K. INSTEAD EMAIL ME THE RESULTS AND REPLAYS AT ACONN@IGN.COM. The map pool changes at this time also, to the cloaked versions.

The Round of 32 = Round 6 on the Z33K tournament page.

Also, bnet chat channel is IPL Qualifier 1 again

Select post-Round-of-32 matches will be cast later this week (The OP has the full casting schedule)

After they are cast, they will be uploaded in to the bracket, where you can download the replays.

Also, this thread will be updated with who qualified, once the games are cast

Have you guys considered having seedings for the coming qualifiers based on performance in previous IPLs and qualifiers? I mean some of the bracket sections were so stacked with pros while others were completely empty. Probably a good idea to spread them out atleast a little bit for the coming qualifiers.

Here are the people currently fighting for the 8 slots

1: vpdaedalus/theory vs mouzmana/ryze

2: SLoG/ParanOid/mym.cloud vs liquidret1/nerchio

3: rootcatz/iefnaij vs fnaticfenix/gensulitor

4: tt1/FXOmOoNan vs MillDieStar/fkcxions

5: vibe/elfi vs NrGdde/mouzhasu

6: Tarson/serp vs eglzgamer/kokodasi

7: ROOTDestiny/sterling vs edge/znow

8: clairvoyance/NightEnD vs stalife/revshadow

One of the players inadvertently posted RO32 results to z33k, so disregarding that in case it gets fixed to avoid spoilers

Poor ranged. Had to defeat Agh, then Tyler, then Fenix(who had to beat Drewbie). That was one stacked bracket section.

My picks for top 8:
Mana
Nerchio
Fenix
tt1
dde
Tarson
Destiny
NightEnD
Time Flies like an arrow. Fruit Flies like a banana.

Thank you everyone for participating in our first qualifier! I know we had a rocky start yesterday but thanks to your feedback and patience, we resolved those issues today and were able to move on. We do have our 8 qualifiers and I think everyone will be very pleased with who they are. We will be casting games on Thursday and Friday and then will reveal the full qualifiers and seeding after the broadcast on Friday. We will have links up to register for the next event tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Sweet that we can D/L the replays from the bracket. Some heavy-hitter match-ups are already posted for the rounds leading up to the Ro32. So many "pros" got knocked out in R1 or R2. Thx for making these replays accessible! It would be cool if someone would make a replaypack.

Gonna watch Tyler vs. lgranged now!

Hey everyone, since we're only casting two days this week (Thursday and Friday) instead of our normal four days starting next week, we've decided to go ahead and release the information on who made it through round of 32 to the round of 16. As you all know, the round of 16 is incredibly important because the winner of that round is qualified for IPL Season Two! All further games past the round of 16 is simply for seeding spots.

Round of 32

VPDaedalus vs Theory
MouzMana vs coLRyze
Paranoid vs MYMCloud
LiquidRet vs Nerchio
ROOTCatZ vs Iefnaij
FnaticFenix > Gensulitor
FnaticMSITTI > FXOmOoNaN
MillDieStar > fkcXions
SixjaxViBE > Virus
NrGdde < MouzHasuObs
MillTarson > Serp
EGLzGaMeR > ROOTDdoro
ROOTDestiny > Sterling
Edge < Holder
XxElitexX < FnaticNightend
coLstalife > RevShadow

This of course leaves for the Round of 16 the following matches...

VPDaedalus vs MouzMana
MYMCloud vs LiquidRet
Iefnaij vs FnaticFenix
FnaticMSITTOne vs MillDieStar
SixjaxViBE vs MouzHasuobs
MillTarson vs EGLzGaMeR
ROOTDestiny vs Holder
FnaticNightend vs coLstalife

Our broadcast schedule for this week will be broadcasting the following games (all of which are Best of 5):

IPL Qualifier Thursday with AskJoshy, starting at 3 PM PDT

So...

Mana
Cloud
Fenix
TT1
HasuObs
Tarson
Destiny
Nightend

Are gonna qualify. Cloud vs. ret will probably be the interesting match. Tarson vs. LZ could be interesting.

IGN staff decided to be a little bit assholes to Virus aka VirusElfi , because when he asked if he could play zotac finals he was disqualified. Im not exactly sure because he is still shown in the brackets.
Holy check.

I highly doubt he was DQ'ed when he asked if he could play in another tournament... I don't know the situation but the IGN staff are very understanding (from my experience with IPL 1) Perhaps he got DQ'ed when he went on to play the zotac finals :/

I want to see Destiny's mass infestors game casted!
I think you guys should maybe pick out 1 or 2 joke / funny games out of ro32 for each of these qualifiers, should be good fun amongst the more serious games :D

Yeah I meant that as a suggestion for future casts
Also are there any plans for casting the ro8 and beyond in the future ?

It depends on the quality of the games, but since we'll have 4 days, yeah we would like to do that.

yo alex, have you thought about maybe making some kind of seeding for the qualifier? I understand that a "proper" seeding list is too hard to do, but maybe you could just "spread out" all the grandmaster players who sign up?

There were 90 grandmasters players that signed up.

That's not exactly easy to "spread out".

Not sure what you imply by not "easy" ?
Its math ... to give everyone an equal oppurtunity you would want to spread the 90 GMs evenly in the bracket.

So if you have 512 players, 90 of who are GM: going from top to bottom in a ro512 bracket, you place 1 GM player after every 5 non-GM.

This way, all the way up to ro128, non-GM players have to play AT MOST 1 GM player. sounds like a fair way to do it I think.

Honestly, I'm not all that impressed by Grandmasters League. It just seems like a first-come-first-serve basis for the 200 people that ladder-whored the most and then after that as long as you're somewhat active you're still in it. It's not like it's all-that competitive, just luck of the draw really. There are plenty of Masters players that impress me more than some of the GM players,

EDIT: Looking at the matches quickly I can see the lalush (GM) lost to FXOSLoG (M), NrGMalice (GM) lost to Paranoid (M), Noctis (GM) and Maker (GM) both lost to SCDPride (M). And we know from the Ro32 results that Sterling (GM) lost to ROOTDestiny (M).

Yeah, and shouldn't the objective of a tournament be to show that you're the best player in the tournament anyway? You should have to face good players to be rewarded. =)

He can use his European account info, so why didn't he? That's what Nerchio did at least.

Oh, then Darkforce (GM) lost to coLRyze (M)

Hey Alex if you can present this information in the form of a bracket (here or on the IPL website) that would be really nice.

Hey everyone, since we're only casting two days this week (Thursday and Friday) instead of our normal four days starting next week, we've decided to go ahead and release the information on who made it through round of 32 to the round of 16. As you all know, the round of 16 is incredibly important because the winner of that round is qualified for IPL Season Two! All further games past the round of 16 is simply for seeding spots.

Round of 32

VPDaedalus vs Theory
MouzMana vs coLRyze
Paranoid vs MYMCloud
LiquidRet vs Nerchio
ROOTCatZ vs Iefnaij
FnaticFenix > Gensulitor
FnaticMSITTI > FXOmOoNaN
MillDieStar > fkcXions
SixjaxViBE > Virus
NrGdde < MouzHasuObs
MillTarson > Serp
EGLzGaMeR > ROOTDdoro
ROOTDestiny > Sterling
Edge < Holder
XxElitexX < FnaticNightend
coLstalife > RevShadow

This of course leaves for the Round of 16 the following matches...

VPDaedalus vs MouzMana
MYMCloud vs LiquidRet
Iefnaij vs FnaticFenix
FnaticMSITTOne vs MillDieStar
SixjaxViBE vs MouzHasuobs
MillTarson vs EGLzGaMeR
ROOTDestiny vs Holder
FnaticNightend vs coLstalife

Our broadcast schedule for this week will be broadcasting the following games (all of which are Best of 5):

IPL Qualifier Thursday with AskJoshy, starting at 3 PM PDT

FnaticMSITTOne vs MillDieStar
MillTarson vs EGLzGaMeR
SixjaxViBE vs MouzHasuobs

IPL Qualifier Friday with Raelcun, starting at 3 PM PDT

Iefnaij vs FnaticFenix
MYMCloud vs LiquidRet
FnaticNightend vs coLstalife

Depending on the time and interest level, we may broadcast more games, but those are the ones guaranteed for us to show you all. All games will be broadcast on the IPL Justin.TV channel and you can tune in at http://www.ign.com/ipl - hope everyone enjoys seeing who makes it in!

Any chances of using a bracket instead of free text typing!? It makes things so much easier and aesthetically pleasing. Challonge.com is a great resource

Still no bracket updates? What even happened today? Please keep the brackets updated on z33k, or *somewhere*, at least. I kind of wish the results of this thing were just posted, even if you plan on casting some of the qualifier games.

Just for the record I was given some "bonus footage" that I was given the option to cast beyond the first three matches. And I do intend to do as much of it as I can. So plan on sticking around for some extra matches after the first three.

We didn't get a chance to finish on Sunday because of lag issues from Saturday pushing back the schedule, and due to travel we haven't been able to finish everything. I'm not hiding it on purpose, as soon as it's done I will reveal it.

Why is it so hard to get the results posted? First z33k.com doesn't update at all, now it says 'result hidden' everywhere. Some of the games are posted in this thread, but not on the bracket. I understand you want to broadcast some stuff later on but people who don't want spoilers should be smart enough to not search for results. Hiding information really doesn't increase the viewer count to those broadcasts.

You really need to update the first post with more information. Sending me to http://www.ign.com/ipl/news/2011/05/13/congratulations-to-our-qualified-players-from-the-first-ipl-season-two-qualifier for your one sentence description of the 8 qualifiers is not what I'm looking for as a fan. Total buzzkill. Can I watch VoDs from the Ro32 and beyond? Where? Can you add links to the first post pls? Will you be updating the Z33k brackets? Can we d/l replays of match-ups that we are interested in but were not cast?

The qualis for this tournament are becoming very difficult to follow.

You're right, there's a ton of info I need to compress into one post and it gets a little long, but I'm also not 100% sure how much more info you need. In the OP, I have the players that entered the round of 32 and the final qualified players, as well as a VOD link to our two days of casting. The z33k brackets are no longer important, you know the results of the important round (ro 16), everything else is for seeding. And no we're not releasing the replays because we might cast them at a later point in time. Would you like for me to include links to the two live report day threads that were used for this round also? To be honest, I kind of thought this thread would die off, as we already know the 8 qualified players, which was the whole point of the qualifier. Seriously, let me know what you would like in terms of info in future OPs and I'll make sure to include it.

I dunno... but I can guarantee you that being wishy washy ("we might cast them at a later point in time") is never a good idea. I hope you make a decision and either tell us when they will be casted or release the replays and fill in the brackets. Personally I'd prefer the latter, since out-of-date/spoiled casts wouldn't be all that interesting. I'd prefer to see the whole brackets filled in with the replays released, so I can go watch the match-ups that I want to see.

I clicked on the 4 hour video but I don't really wanted to spend time scanning through it to find Cloud vs. Ret. I'd also love to see how the rest of the tourney went (beyond the Ro16). Replays are great! Replays allow me to 4x or 8x to the interesting parts without having to sit through the whole cast.

Thanks for everything... love this event and would like to follow it closely. I've been encouraging all of my friends to sign up for Quali #3.

Due to one set of players having bad travel schedule, it has not been finished. I will release that info when I get it.

We will not be releasing replays for any of these unfortunately.
