Code S

Round of 32

OK, this is going to be pretty complicated, so bear with me. After Matches A and B are played, the winners of those matches play the loser. After that happens, there are 3 possibilities that can happen.

Possibility A: The group now has players with these records: 2-0, 2-0, 0-2, 0-2. At this point, the players who are 2-0 play each other to determine seeding in the Ro16, and the players who are 0-2 play each other to determine placement in the up/down (Code S / Code A) matches.

Possibility B: The group now has players with these records: 2-0, 1-1, 1-1, 0-2. At this point, the player with 2-0 does not need to play any more matches. He is first in the group. Likewise, Mr. 0-2 is done. He is in 4th place in the group. The two players who are 1-1 play against each other again to determine who takes 2nd and who takes 3rd in the group.

Possibility C: The group now has players with these records: 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1. Whoever has not played each other play. The winner of that match advances and the loser is eliminated.

No foreigners in Code A? Thought GOMTV was giving 4 spots to top non koreans, or was that just for the one season?

Note: MarineKingPrime is terran not protoss

Makes me wonder if TheWind is even trying to beat MC.

HuK will have hard time in the first round tbh. I don't even see him advancing..

I hope Jinro does well against San. Though, it won't be easy.

Thanks motbob!

I doubt it, it will probably end up like Hyperdub vs MC last season.

You should refer to the last three as:

GSL January
GSL March
GSL May

Instead of referring to the sponsors, less confusing this way.

Edit: thanks for making this thread and all, just trying to add some feedback too

Oh boy, HuK lucked out massively with the groups again and will be cocky as hell despite only having to avoid falling out of his chair to get past the first round; decent chance he'll mess it up somehow anyway.

I think Huks group is pretty bad for him actually. Last time he played Inca he got smashed. Last time he played July, he got smashed. Rains the only weak link IMO

Even then, Rain has shown that he works hard enough to get back into code S from Code A. He's the only player to have done that so far.

It seems Code A is gonna be much better than previous seasons.
A lot of amazing players like MMA, Squirtle, Ace and some very interesting newcommers like SlayerS Min and SlayerS Ryun.
I hope Boxer makes it.

I think it's more likely you'd be banned for preemptively declaring it more than anything else.

I'm looking forward to see how Boxer does, but I'm a little worried, especially in light of his injury. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and is able to practice up and make it on past the Ro32. I'm also looking forward to seeing if Min is as good as the GSTL suggested, and if MMA can perform well in an individual league. Go Slayers, I guess

Best season yet for code A and code S IMO, really can't wait till Bomber shows his dominance!!!!!

I'm very hyped about this GSL. Lots of great matches ahead. Jinro and Huk better bring their A games, because if not, they might not make it, which would be sad. Excited about Code A as well, Losira performing in Code S, and see if July can come solid as he did last month, and i believe he will. Also very keen on seeing the performance of the Zergs in general, and to see some new strats and how the korean deals with Protoss!!!

HuK's group is really fucking hard. Inca is a pvp master and July is July. He is going to have to win some hard games to advance.

Jinro also got a hard group. Some groups are really fucking stacked while some are kind of meh. I really want to see Alicia advance, but he's got a tough group too.

Can you possibly add Code A to the winners list? its GSL as well, and since this is GSL R&S it seems silly to not have it. otherwise, thanks for all the hard work motbob!

Nice martyr.

I used to be able to easily tell who would come out of each group, but as each seasons progress, it becomes a lot harder. These groups are so strong.

Also, it would be a shame if MC's out so soon, but SuperNoVa's TvP is pretty damn good (Alicia's killer!).

Hype Hype Hype! Can't wait for this to start, especially with Moletrap + Doa casting Code A. Their dual-casts on youtube were alright, though not terribly good, but it seems as if they are seriously working on it.

I got a feeling the terrans in Code A are gonna roflstomp through everyone there, but Code S looks like it has the better Z and P players (with the exception of MVP and MKP).

I really want MMA in code S next season... pls MMA GOOGOGOGOG!!!

Who'll win Code S this year? With MVP in code A i think that MC is the the most probably winner... second place for nestea and july.
The best new player for code s will go to Alicia and Supernova, both really good player!

P.s.: I want Boxer back in code S too! :-P

What do you think?

Just as a thought given how well Dimaga has been doing recently. How could a foreign player enter into the system (I am guessing into Code A) at all? Are there some open qualifiers or something before the season?

Just asking because Dimaga seems to be playing as well if not better than some of the other players in that list so I'm wondering if he has a hope of getting in at all.

I think they've said that the sponsor will be LG just like the World Champs.

LG also would be the sponsor for the Super Tournament.

Suggestion to OP:

When watching Code A players, one of the first things I look for is which category they fall in:

1. Players who were in Code A last season.
2. Players who dropped down from Code S.
3. New players to Code A and Code S.

In the future (and also of this OP?) could you leave notes on which category each player falls into?

Thanks.

edit: I know that a lot of names looks familiar, but I don't watch all of the Code A games anymore. And sometimes I just forget, especially between categories 1 and 2. I suppose I could look at all of the "How they got here threads," but... anyway, that's my suggestion.

Sup y'all, thanks for the banner submissions, both so far are quite good. Hold off on them for now, since GSL hasn't yet released the official May GSL logo. Also, don't put "Teamliquid Coverage" in the banner. Thanks!

Oh, ok. I was only adding "teamliquid coverage" because i thought it looked good in your February R&S.

Just had a visit to the Korean GSL site and it seems they've updated it.

Can't recall if it they had it up earlier, but they're now listing LG Cinema 3D as the sponsor.

They've also updated the map pool to include the 7 maps John listed + Taldarim Altar.

Other things of interest for the TLPD team: Brown is now on team SlayerS. Speaking of Brown, motbob, you might wanna update the OP to link him to the proper (P)Brown and not (T)SKit TLPD, which has unfortunately made its way into Liquipedia as well, due to my inability to distinguish between two players with the same name during the Code A qualifications. Lol.

Man I hate Code S round of 32. Group play is so hard to predict, and i don't feel the best players come from it.

If you loose your first game in group play your almost completely dependant on others losing in order to make it to the round of 16.

If each matchup consisted of Bo3's in group play, then it would be much more stable.

(obviously that would be an insane number of games. not all that realistic.)

I agree that group play sucks. We saw players like MVP, Nestea, and MKP fall out in the group stages, probably not because they were worse players than the top 2 in their respective group stages, but just because group format is simply a terrible way to determine who gets to move on in a tournament if you really want to accurately base it on player skill.

From what I read, no. He just had some bad food and missed the plane to Dreamhack, should be ok for GSL.

I completely disagree.

You shouldn't go into the group stage with a mindset that you can only qualify if your opponents lose. It should always be "If I win 2 games, I'm through, regardless of what happen to my opponents". If you lose two games in a row then it's your fault that you got eliminated. Similar to a Bo3. Same thing can happen even if it were a Bo3.

To the other guy saying that MVP got eliminated because of the format: he lost because he lost twice to July. How does that differ from a Bo3? And then he got knocked down to Code A because he got 2-1ed and 2-0ed by Alicia and Genius, games in which he deserved to lose. I mean yea he is a skillful player, but the reason he's in Code A this season is not due to the format or anything. It was his own fault.

Nestea lost to San and Ensnare, not due to any cheese or anything, but because he just didn't play well that day. Watch the matches again. San and Ensnare beat him fair and square. You could argue that if San and Ensnare were to play him in a Bo3, he would beat them both. But look at it this way: You are 1-1 (beating Boxer, losing to San), and you know you're going to be eliminated if you lose the next match, against Ensnare, who should be an inferior player. It's the same situation if you were 1-1 against Ensnare, and you had 1 more set to play. The reason you lose is because of your own fault.

The only ill effect of the format is you can't learn from a person's play in the previous two matches, but it works both ways also, and shouldn't really bias the inferior player. If you're really better than him, you would know you have to win, and play the best to win. If you don't then it's just an unfortunate day for you. Just like all those people who lose 0-2 to inferior players due to cheese or something (Genius in S1).

As for MKP: He won his first game IIRC, that should give him the confidence to know that he only has to win ONE out of two games to guarantee qualification. If he loses the next set, then he's in a similar situation with the Nestea illustration I put above.

The format makes for a more intriguing and tense matches and it's a way of pushing through the players who were better ON THAT DAY and isn't much different from a regular Bo3.

It also offers up a better spectator view as we don't have to see the same match up all the time (unless you're in Group B, in which case you can only see TvT. Lol)

He's definitely not the favorite of his group. Huk and Jinro have both shown some pretty bad games in recent broadcasted matches. I'm rooting for July and whoever else in his group.

Didn't flash get eliminated really early last msl? MVP was hardly playing well when he got knocked into code A.

Flash got knocked out by almost the same system (same groups but winner vs winner (1) and loser vs loser (2) and than loser of (1) against winner of (2)). So he lost to Classic and Reality or something like that and was out.
