I had the same problem, for me it was my login name in the top right. It was in a bunch of foreign characters. I just relogged and it worked just fine.

Ooh, I gotta say that I'm not a fan of the players' names and game stats in the UI

. I'd rather it be slim and sit at the top of the screen like usual than block the UI like that - it just looks kinda ugly

Yea the new overlay looks really unfortunate, they should just revert to how it was. Its nice how they wanted it off the gameplay screen but this is just foul to look at.
