A counter example to the argument that having a winning record vs. a player makes it unfair to be eliminated: if in the worldcup two teams from the same group ended up in the finals, should one team get an advantage just because it ended up first in the group?
They are playing in the same bracket, at the same place in the tournament. What does it matter what the past results were? You might as wel add handicaps based on seeding, to ensure the best player wins, or whatever.
