The Rising Cup, created by Karliath, is meant to give a competitive arena for gold, silver, and bronze players in StarCraft2, amongst the teamliquid community, to build their skills. I competed in it myself, won my first round, but lost the second and was out of the tournament. I watched the rest of the matches, and had a lot of fun, but several of us wanted a little bit more...
Thus, I've decided, with the assistance of several others who've posted in the forum linked above, to start a league, the RISING League, in which we all play 2 rounds of Bo3 against every player through a weekly season system, uploading replays and learning about our opponents as it goes, with the best four seeding into the finals.
Each week, players will have a 1v1 "best of 3" (Bo3) round against 2 different opponents (two rounds, 4-6 games). We invite you all to watch our replays, discuss, as we all learn to become better gamers.
As you can see, there are 14 players, 2 games per player per week, for a total of 13 weeks. Maps will be from the 1v1 ladder Blizzard pool plus Incineration Zone (1v1 map from the Beta I loved) and Crossfire (Blizzard made, nice map, butnot officially ladder map yet), and each week will have a preset 1st map, and the winner can veto one map in the next round, followed by the loser picking from the map pool any that were not vetoed.
So, selectable/veto-able maps are:
Lost Temple Desert Oasis (new version with rocks at natural expansion) Metalopolis Scrap Station Kulas Ravine XelNaga Caverns Delta Quadrant Steppes of War Blistering Sands Crossfire Incineration Zone Jungle Basin Shakuras Plateau
Week1: Lost Temple Week2:Desert Oasis Week3:Metalopolis Week4:Scrap Station Week5: Kulas Ravine Week6: XelNaga Caverns Week7: Delta Quadrant Week8:Steppes of War Week9:Blistering Sands Week10:Crossfire Week11: Incineration Zone Week12:Jungle Basin Week13:Shakuras Plateau
Finals: 3v4: Blistering Sands Xv2: Lost Temple Xv1:Metalopolis
Each week, players will have two running scores that are updated based upon their performance. First, there will be number of rounds won. This will determine who seeds and the seating into the finals. For tie breakers, there will be a points system: win= +4 points loss= -1 point tie= 0 points (and yes, I realize this is highly unlikely, but not impossible, as perhaps both players have a nexus, no minerals, and no units to kill off the opponent)
This system is meant to reward those who have better win:loss ratios, in the case of a tie breaker, such that assume 2 players both win 25 games, one won them 2-0, the other 2-1. They'll have the same # rounds won, but the 2-0 player crushed his opponents more, and will suffer less from the -1 point penalty for losing a game.
If a further tie breaker is necessary, perhaps the two players can compete in a sudden death Bo1, but we'll cross that bridge if need be once we get there.
For the finals, the 3rd and 4th ranked players will square off in a Bo5, and then the winner will play the 2nd ranked person in a Bo5, and the winner of that will play the 1st ranked person in a Bo5 for the championship. Prize money is still be worked on, and it may or may not happen, but the idea is to award 50% of the pool to the winner, 25% to the 2nd place, and 12.5% to 3rd and 4th place, each. Regardless, these people will have bragging rights, be casted, and have their replays to showcase their talents.
FlowandEbb and Hybrid will be casting games as they are uploaded, and a few others of us may help them with the load.
Week 1 begins ***Edit: was this Sunday, but due to the upcoming patch, Tuesday once maintainance is done, due to the potential of 1st week matches being imbalanced in comparison to later season games which will be inevitably post-patch***, and I'll be sending out confirmation PMs to all interested players, and they have 48 hours from now to respond (11am Friday 9/17/2010, central standard time, till 11am Sunday 9/19/2010 CST). There are a few alternates, in case of dropouts, but hopefully that will not be an issue.
I'll be posting replays and recapping game outcomes in this thread, so stay tuned!
Replays are to be sent from each official game, to: bchaney at psychology dot ou dot edu (My apologies for the format not being copy&pasteable, but i did that to avoid the webcrawling spammer programs, and I suggest you guys do the same if you ever post email addresses on forums open to the public.)
I'll be forwarding to FlowandEbb/L1f3(Hybrid) the replays as well, and they're free to cast any they see fit. And Stoids, if you're interested still, I can send you some files as well. However, for the finals, we may need to consider a live cast and an official time for the games as it gets closer. I'm tempted to make the finals a 3 nighter, so one Bo5 per night, such that everyone can watch and still get their sleep.

to the map pool, and I think I'll add them. I'd like all of the first maps to be different, but that would require 16 maps, yet with these 2 plus the 9 Blizz 1v1, that's only 11. So, if you guys have any suggestions, I'll definitely consider. Not only will these maps be seen as potential first maps, but they will be eligible for loser's pick and winner's veto, as well.

Also, Karliath, I was curious, what software are you using to make that cast? Looked like a good start, but I'm not sure how to do the voice over, the banner hiding the game length bar, etc. I'm assuming you're using fraps? In any case, just let me know so that I can work on my casting as well.
On the point system, I was reconsidering the system for deciding who gets into the finals. Obviously, the top 4 players get in. Orignially, number of rounds won is the first deciding factor. Then, points based on win:loss through the games within the rounds, ie win=3,loss=0, tie=1. I thought of a scenario that would arrise from this which isnt exactly fair. If say, Mission won several rounds at 2-0, while I won several rounds at 2-1, we would have the same number of round wins, and points, however Mission crushed his opponents while i skirted by somehow. I'm thinking losses should hurt us in some way. Perhaps now, wins should be +4 points, and losses should be -1, and ties, we'll just keep at +1, not that i foresee them happening, though. In this case, all my -1's for the lost games will show up when comparing our scores, thus giving credit where credit is due.
I just read your idea for a sub-system. How come wins get +4 and losses only get -1? Shouldn't they be weighed equally?
As for maps, I say we predetermine the first map, and then winner vetos a map first, and loser picks from the remaining 1v1 maps. I'm tempted to simply say Lost Temple, Blistering Sands, Desert Oasis, Scrap Station, Metalopolis, XelNaga Caverns, Delta Quadrant, Steppes of War, Kulas Ravine (essentially the 1v1 Blizz maps. Am I leaving any out?) and how about this(note: both bo3's per week use the same setup):
weekly first maps:
Week1: Lost Temple Week2:Desert Oasis Week3:Metalopolis Week4:Scrap Station Week5: Kulas Ravine Week6: XelNaga Caverns Week7: Delta Quadrant Week8:Steppes of War Week9:Blistering Sands Week10:Lost Temple Week11: Blistering Sands Week12:Kulas Ravine Week13:Steppes of War
Finals: 3v4: Scrap Station Xv2: Desert Oasis Xv1:Metalopolis

I am using Camtasia Studio, which just happens to be on my computer for some reason. I do record screen + mic + system sound at the same time. I use Irfanview or something for the banner.
As for points, I still prefer the 3,1,0 method. Keep in mind that this is for the entire Bo3. This also means that, unless you win, tie, then lose, or tie all three games, it's extremely hard to get that 1 point.
You bring up the point that a person who consistently wins 2-0 should not hold the same position as someone who wins 2-1. In soccer, there is something called a goal difference where the number of goals you conceded over the season is subtracted from the number of goals you score to create a "goal difference," sort of like a subscore to settle points ties. I think the same method can be used here. The first player would get a "win difference" of +2, and the second player would only get a win difference of +1.
While I don't ever want to play on Desert Oasis, I think that this is a fair method. Perhaps we could take it out of the semi-finals though. I find scrap station in the quarter-finals to also be a little iffy, but wtv. As you pointed out, they are Bo5s anyways. Perhaps we should create a poll.
I'm fine with Crossfire being in the map-pool, although I hope we can get a little bit more input before it is actually added. After all, there are plenty of good maps that could potentially be added.
I outrightly (not a word ) refuse to play on an island map, however, because it just isn't balance. It's particularly bad against zerg.
I don't want to get into it too much, but let's see what a zerg player can do. For attacking units, the zerg player will have nothing but mutalisks for quite a while. These mutalisks won't be able to attack anyone, as the other races can mass up lower tier ground units that are good against air by the time the two groups face off. The two other races also have more air options in the beginning that can counter extremely effectively. The only way the zerg player can get expansions is by using a nydus worm or doing overlord drops. Nydus worms are so easy to kill that they aren't really going to get anywhere. In addition, ventral sacs take a long time to research. Worst of all is that you can't do anything with the hatchery while it is researching. No tech, no queens. This is a major problem. Essentially, the zerg player is forced to play on one base for too long. Brood lord will not come out in time for anything.
"Maps will be from the 1v1 Blizzard pool" - If we are adding crossfire this should be changed.
- Profile to be completed shortly. - Should replays be sent to DuncanIdaho or HybridFlow?
A senior in high school, I am currently 18 years old. I have been living in Irvine, the Blizzard HQ, for the past three years. Originally from Taipei, I moved to Shanghai at the start of middle school, and then moved to the States for high school. My current role is balancing Starcraft 2 with my college applications and other extracurricular activities.
I entered the gaming world slowly, as my parents resigned to the reality that my growing interest in video games could not be stopped. Ironically, it was their attempt to make me “read better books” that led me to my pursue gaming in order to satisfy my fantasy and science fiction needs. Since then, I have become an avid gamer, with RPGs being my favorite genre.
Starcraft has always been something special for me. When I picked it up in third grade, I never sleep at my bedtime for the rest of the year. Playing as Zerg, I was so terrible that I couldn’t even beat the computer. My interest never waned, however, and now Starcraft 2 is out. Playing as Protoss, my goal is to make it as a solid high platinum player. Nevertheless, I will always be aiming for the diamonds!
I'm an awesome Protoss player who is 3.8729833462074168851792653997824 to the power of 2 years old (I'm 15). Basically, I play Starcraft 2, A LOT of Basketball, and I'm fairly interested in programming (But don't test me, I'm just starting.) I live in Canada, in Calgary, AB, and FlowAndEbb is my co-casting partner and twin.
Right now, I'm interested in getting better in Starcraft, hopefully in to the Diamond League (One can hope), programming TI-Basic to eventually make some games for my calculator to share with my friends, and shotting 20 000 shots by Novemebr 8th. I'm also working on getting HybridFlowStarcraft on Youtube up, running well, and with n00bs helping n00bs!
I dislike rushes with a passion (I think it's cause I literally never put up cannons), which is why I am vetoeing Steppes of War from the map list during the tournament. I'm trying to get in to the standard HuK build which is a 2 gate robo, but i'm not afraid of trying something new to mess with my opponent's strategy. I'm the proud leader of a n00b clan: WaW, or We Are the Walrus, which I obtained the leader position by a winning a tournament between hopefuls. I lost in the first round of the RISING cup #2, but don't expect anything easy!

Oh wow! Well, I wonder if we should wait on playing games that count until after the patch, such that first week games wont be imbalanced in comparison to other weeks? Just a thought... Well, Okay. I'm making the executive decision, only practice games are allowed before tuesday patch day, regular games will commence once the maintainance period is over.
As for Karliath's opinions about Debris Field, I don't agree that zerg is underpowered, they have queens, infestors, and hydras and spore colonies, terran has rines, thors, ghosts and turrets (well, maybe the raven too...), Toss has stalkers, sentries, templar, cannons. Air, zerg has mutas AND corrupters as soon as the spire goes up (this isn't broodwar). And of course, later the broodlord will be nigh unstopable. terran has viking banshe battlecruiser, bleh zerg can handle those. Toss has void ray, phoenix, carrier (maaybe mothership, but meh). corrupters beat phoenix, mutas beat voidrays, corrupters are okay against carriers, but I have recently triedmicroing my air on the fringes to pick off the interceptors, and then focus down the carriers, and it seems to work out in my favor. Terran, corrupters beat battlecruisers, especially with contaminate, and mutas rape vikings. banshees, well theyre just a weak version of the broodlord except with a cloak ability, and susceptible to air. I'm not afraid as Zerg of an islands map, but if you guys think thisis too imba,i understand and I'll take it out. But when you say zerg has to get nydus and drops to expand, well toss has to get warp prisms to expand.
Although, a thought just occured, terran can make an in-base cc and expand rather early, and they have mules to maximize their profits... Perhaps THAT is the true imbalance for an islands map, but i'm not too scared of terran air, to be honest... But anywho, I'll be happy to remove it, I just wanted to say my piece about Zerg, and how I refuse to think terran is OP. If anything toss is OP early on, but it seems their warpgates are getting hit with the nerf bat, 23sec CD now 28sec. All the more reason an islands map might balance zvp a little. But terran, meh, I ain't skeered...
But anywho, for now I'll table the idea of debris field, and we can stick with just crossfire added. Do we want any more Blizz 1v1s that arent ladder, such as agria fields or something? I saw it in the create a game selections, but never played on it. And yeah, I checked out the maps on ICCup, heres a thread with some links and I believe the ones we'd be interested in are the ones under the 2player heading: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=139560
I do miss Incineration Zone from the beta, I wouldnt mind adding that awesome map (Zerg homeworld of Char... Makes you feel a swarm and fuzzy. :p)
It's whatever guys, if we want to get some candidate maps before Tuesday, we can get a poll going and if we get, what, 3/4th's approval? Then I'll put them in. I do wonder though about the mineral count on the ICCup maps, it looks like some might have the number of minerals changed, though it may just be an optical illusion, my eyes going blind, etc. Too many journal article pdf files in grad school are gonna be the end of vision for me...
Well, thanks for the feedback guys, keep it coming. In the meantime, lets postpone till after the patch. I'll Update the above original post.
I like the island map, I don't really know how to play island maps, but I'm sure it will be a fun and unique experience for me. I also like the other map, it looks very big, and very much a tough map to micro on.

lol no playing rock paper sissors. You must pick your tool, and stick with it.
(Random intrusive thought: If toss terran and zerg were to be rock paper and siccors, which would they be, and why? lol jk, that's like a whole entirely different thread... )
Alright I guess I will write up this info thing :D My name is Derek Smith. I am a 17 year old senior in High School in New York, and I have been gaming forever. Growing up it was the usual games and what not. Then I got big into CS:S and fps games on the ps3, at the same time I was playing WoW pretty hardcore.
That is how I found out about SC2 from playing WoW and saw everyone making a big huff about it. After looking into it I thought that this is a game I want to play, I mean I played some RTS games before WC3/Empire Earth, but that wasn't competitive so I didn't really play I just role played as a general heh. I got the game and jumped into 1v1 and now I am trying to learn more about the game and increase my skill(I know a lot about it, I just can't always get it in the game I shake a lot when I play from all my time on CS I think ha)
I look forward to playing with all of you in the league hopefully we all learn a few things!

Well, although I'm with ya PB, Karliath's not the first to dislike island maps, and I understand the community has mixed feelings about a limiting map... I want this to be enjoyable, and if everyone's not happy with the map pool, then we need to work together to reach an agreement. Tell ya what, I'll play ya in a custom game at some point on that map just for kicks
And now that I read some more of the thread. I don't really like the idea of Scrap Station and Desert oasis are the final first maps, but that might just be cause I hate them with a small passion hah.
And on island maps I am kind of mixed on them I mean I would play them and make the best of them;however, I feel that they might be a little imbalanced but take that with a grain of salt.

Okay, so several peeps seem to be upset about the finals as well. What maps should they be then? And I'm not focusing this at Fluffy, but all of you who aren't happy with it.
i think we should just stick with ladder maps because everyone knows them and they are balanced and since desert oasis is getting changed next patch i think it will be alright to keep it in but i do think we should vote on finals maps

I think Lost Temple, Xel Naga Caverns, and Metalopolis for the finals but again I am fine with what ever.

This is what I was thinking about how Terran is set on island maps, but I think it should be fine. I mean, if you get early pheonixes or mutas, you should be able to kill that CC before it can get to its expansion area. Also, that Warpgate nerf is only for the cooldown of the zealot, there's a different cooldown period for each unit.

I believe that the two finalists should either decide together or play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide who picks the map for the finals, or maybe the person with the best record would choose it, kind of like of in the NBA, the finals is played at home for the team with the best seating.
Also, gonna be adding adsense and a few bios to the website now, should be up soon.

My parents don't know I'm even doing this. They also don't know I play late at night to avoid the time restrictions they put on me.

No no, just your three fave maps you want in the finals. Most fave, 2nd most fave, and 3rd most fave. We'll decide the order later. Had I been able to design the question appropriately, I would say, rank 3 of these maps, 1 2 and 3. However, since I can't (damn forums being made by computer scientists and not consulting statisticians for appropriate question formats first) , I'll have to go upon this silly multiple question format. The way I analyze this data may get strange, but in any case, don't assume that since your map isn't winning in a particular category, that this means it wont be seen. Essentially, the maps will get points based upon rank. 3 points if 1st choice, 2 points if second, 1 point if third. Furthermore, the order maps are displayed in should be randomized for each individual, as I did not tell TL.net to lock the order i typed the response sets in.
This is how you score a rank order question, essentially.

Ok. We'll probably send you some replays when this kicks off.
Is it a coincidence that Rtomas and momo have not confirmed yet?
I say we drop them now, and pick up people who still want to get in on this league who we know already. And yes, Rahj, it's too late. I don't like people with 1 post anyways :\
Rtomas is have problems with his tl account Because he deleted that email before he changed his password... I'm with him right now and he says he will send Duncan pm has soon has he gets another account, which will be like today

I dont mean to be a nuisance, but I'm still hoping I can get in if you guys pick up new people.
is registration still open good sir? If so I would be interested in playing, always looking to get better! If so I can give you my account information.

Kind of counter intuitive wouldn't you say? I mean, if I was posting at this website long enough to rack up 800 something posts I wouldn't be in gold league anymore would I?
I have so few posts because I'm rather new here and, wouldn't you know it, I'm trying to get better!
But I can see your point of view though. How dare I try to get better?

Oooo... a Zerg... We hardly have any Zerg... Perhaps, what's your league (gold, silver, bronze)?
Hey, I am PointyBagels, and have been PointyBagels for a long time now. I started playing Brood War in January or so only against friends, all of whom were better than me, later found iccup, where everyone was better than me. It's not like I was D-, I was rank E, it was terrible. Finally, when SC2 came out, I finally started winning some. My macro improved, to the point where I am fairly high in the gold league. I am 15 years old, and have not really gotten into gaming much before SC, but since a lot of my friends have, here I am.
My first tournament was the RISING Cup 2, and I had a great time, so I decided I would do this. I think playing in the Rising Cup helped me not only by jut playing games, but opened me up to more strategic variety, so now I vary my strat pretty often, since repeating strategy does not work too well in BO3. I much prefer to simply outmacro my opponent than to rush, however don't be surprised if you see a 4 warpgate out of me, though i don't really consider that a rush.
I started playing in the beta just a little bit, and was placed in silver. At first, I thought I should be bronze, but quickly learned enough to compete in silver. I bought the game in early August, and also got placed in silver then. I eventually made it to gold with the 4 warpgate push alone, surprisingly few silvers can defend it. Recently I think my macro has improved quite a bit, putting me a lot closer to plat. My Goal is to be Plat by the end of October and to make Diamond by the end of 2011.
I have to say posts do matter. No, it's not that someone with close to zero posts is necessarily bad. However, there is a correlation between having low posts and not visiting TL, or this thread for the matter, often enough. That, of course, leads to mis-communication and "missing" people. If you have a relatively high number of posts, we at least know that you come to TL regularly, and can count on you to keep track of info.
You might think a league with 14 people is no fun. I find a league 2th 24 people, 5 of them missing all the time, to be no fun. Go organize your own tournament, deal with the no shows, and then see if your opinion changes.
It is Sunday, Sep 19 2:33am GMT (GMT+00:00)(that time should adjust to your local time zone, per the format I put it in) Still nothing from Momo or Rtomas... They have until Sunday, Sep 19 4:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) . If I don't have anything from either or both of them confirming, they're out and the next people on the list get in. Unfortunately, however, I cannot extend the list, since we plan to do 2 Bo3's against each opponent, and 2 Bo3's per week per player, for 13 weeks. If we add more, that will either be more games per week, or more weeks, both of which I don't want, and neither do the other players. There will always be other rising cups (I believe Karliath is organizing another in a few weeks?), and new leagues form all the time. In fact, feel free to form your own. However, as much as I'd like to let you all in, it's just not logistically possible. In any case, I will send a confirmation to the people on the wait list, and give them 24 hours to respond, and go down the list until someone fills the spot, but momo and Rtomas still have their seats until tomorrow morning...

Just for fun
i hate you
I'm scared. My PvT sucks
dont worry im in a hugeeeee slump right now that i cant break out of. I have lost like 6 games in a row and i lost to my silver friend today..... :S
While I can definitely play, I don't know how well my time schedule would match others'. I usually play late at night. In addition, I don't know how much time I'll be able to invest into practicing specifically for the league. I might just have to go to every game with a semi-standard build and hope to macro myself to wins.
I'm gonna test my recording tech again tonight. If things go better than last time, I may just withdraw and cast as many games as possible for the league. This would benefit the players more, and I get to participate in this great event without actually spending as much time.

We'll see.
Well, it's whatever, man, but I can play most easily during work hours mon thru fri, and mon and wed evening I can stay up late. Weekends can be done, but they're a tad more difficult, as I have to convince my wife that it will be okay. I'm not sure about other people, but hopefully everyone can come to terms with their opponents. Furthermore, if a compromise just can't be met, perhaps a round can be postponed and made up for during a later week, though let's try our best to avoid this situation if at all possible.
In any case, should you decide to drop, you'll be sorely missed, but we'll understand, and you'll always be more than welcome to help flow hybrid and stoids (and maybe me?) cast as much as we can. I'm thinking aboutthis: for every Bo3, the two players agree upon a game that was the "best", or "most castworthy" from their 2-3 games, and then our most valiant attempt as casters to cast those games will be made.
As for live casts, I doubt that will be easy to accomplish, what with the loose schedule, and besides, even if the caster and two players can agree to be online at the same time 3pm Wednesday the Whateverith of Blanktober, will there even be much of an audience at all? However, perhaps some big rivalries may occur, and we can agree to cast those games as they're played live, on say, a Friday evening or something, I don't know, and perhaps if any games have a high observer demand, setting up a live cast might be better in order to avoid lag issues... But, I do want the finals to be live-casted, if at all possible.
In any case, think about it before you truly make the decision to leave, but should you do so, you're welcome to remain a contributor to the community.

Perhaps by then I can find the time to go spam bumps so I can get enough posts to be accepted or at least considered.
The league was full before it was even official as it was created by people from RISING Cup (since we had so much fun). The next Rising Cup tournament will be in a few weeks and maybe you can create your own league from members of that. Otherwise it will be a few months before this league's season One will be finished and we have not started planning the second season. I'm not sure about the problem with low post count as I'm sure I don't have too many posts because I joined TL 2 weeks or so ago. I hope that answered your questions Rahj.
Hey everyone, so I think it was flowandebb who said earlier (I may be wrong) that he was apart of a sc team, I actually curious to what's that all about because ibreally have no clue :p maybe we could all make a team from this league with the up coming free name changes :p

It's not that you "aren't allowed" to sign up for this season, it's that the sign ups are already done. Since the next season, if there will be one, isn't going to start for > 26 weeks, there is no point in signing up at this time.
All of your (2) posts so far have been stupid. And yes, I stand by my statement that "I don't like people with 1 post." Even if you want to go "spam bumps," it would at least guarantee that you are on TL a lot, which mean that you can be reached. I guess it would be more accurate to say that I prefer people with more posts.
Logically, why would I risk the trouble of inviting you, when there is another player I've already worked with and can count on who wants to join? Don't spout BS like Karliath doesn't want people to "try to get better." I created the RISING Cups and helped form this tournament specifically to help the lower league players who don't have a place in the competitive SC2 world.
Are people with less posts inherently worse? Of course not; we all started somewhere. MissioN is doing fine, isn't he? It just so happens to be that people who are newer to this website do not have the proper respect for the forums or the users. You, are a perfect example.
I dearly hope that the spot I open will not given to you. In the end, however, it's not my decision. All I can say is that you really need to shape up, or else people won't want to work with you.
This discussion has no further place in this thread. PM me for additional concerns.
I am doing well, Karliath, since I just got bumped to Platinum. This does raise the question of if I will be able to continue in this League though since I'm not in gold anymore. If not then someone more deserving can have my spot in the league. While I hope I can still play in the league I will understand If I am not allowed. I just need to know and also let you guys know so you can fill my spot before the league officially starts.
I am sorry to have to announce my withdrawal from the RISING League.
As a senior in high school, I simply do not have enough time. Balancing my school work, activities, games, and most importantly, college applications, has proven to be extremely difficult. As I find myself losing more and more sleep, I feel that I need to drop out both for myself, and for the rest of the players in the league.
I take this league extremely seriously, as I hope and expect that you all do. If I were to have participated in it, I would have prepared for every single matchup against my opponents. However, as I've stated, I simply do not have the time to do so. I think it would be unfair for the other contestants if I came into this league and "half-assed" all of my games. Sure, I could have done a variant of the 4 Gate each and every match, and probably could have won a good number of them, but I feel that that's just not right. If I were to play in this league, I would want to give it everything I had. Perhaps next season, when most of the senior troubles have been overcome, I will be able enter once again.
That said, I would still like to contribute to this great idea! I'm currently taking a look at what I can do to help and better this league, but I'd just like to state that my interest has not and will not wane.
Casting seems like the best thing I could do, but I still need to examine how well my computer would be able to handle it. Also, if there are any administrative duties that can use help, I am definitely available.
Oh, and I'm also up for practice matches! Just because I'm not going to participate in this league doesn't mean that I'm quitting SC2 by any means. If you see me online, and feel like getting a match in, just send me a message. Perhaps you have a specific build order you want to practice, or one that you want to practice against. I can be there to help. Of course, I won't tell other players what we are practicing.
Lastly, I would like to point out that TechDeft, who participated in the RISING Cup, was the first person to reply to this thread.

No one ever had the opportunity to sign up! I know I personally will not be able to enter the next one, as I've spent the last week flirting with 1st in my Gold div. Oh well, best of luck to your private league!
Rtomas and momo have not responded to my confirmation notice. It saddens me to do this, but unfortunately I must stick to my word and drop them from the league. We must have reliable gamers if we are to do this, and as tl.net is our primary mode of communication, it is vital to be responsive, especially when talk of this confirmation has been in the works for days, AND a 48 hour grace period was given to respond to the PM. Saturday night, I sent out a PM to both Gabeski and PlusMinus, the first people to show interest in the league AFTER the roster was full (see the rising cup #2 sister thread to this thread for evidence), and I gave them both 24 hours to respond. I have received a confirmation from both of them, and still nothing from the other two... Though one last thing about this, I'd like to point out that perhaps life troubles have effected their ability to devote to this, which is completely understandable, and this in no way reflects the quality of these two as decent people.
So without further adieu, join me in congratulating our two newest members, PlusMinus and Gabeski! PlusMinus.953(T) Gold Gabeski.640 (P) Gold
Furthermore, to make the change more manageable, since they just so happen to be the same races as momo and rtomas , they will assume the rank positions of the corresponding races, respectively. I.E., +- takes momo's spot, and gabeski takes rtomas's spot.

TechDeft! We have an opening! It seems Mission and Karliath will be ineligible/unable to join, you and Rocko are next in line, if you'd like to take their spots. I sent PM's, and you both have 24hours to respond... Good luck! ~DI
PS-Karliath, I understand, and you'll be sorely missed, but thanks for doing this before we began. MissioN, it saddens me to "punish" you for ascension to plat, but hopefully you'll understand that you're beyond the skill level now of the competitors. It would be unfair to pit them against you, and your stellar performance in the Rising Cup#2 is further example of your prowess. I congratulate you on your ascension, and we're all jealous of you, but unfortunately I'll need to give your spot to someone else. Had you ascended in the middle of the season, things would be different, but since it hasn't started yet, technically, it would be negligent towards the other players to allow you to continue. Thanks for being honest, and we wish you all the best.
For the finals, I've tallied the results, with the aid of the poll on page 2 of this thread. At the moment, the counts, multiplied by 3 for 1st, 2 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd, Metalopolis in the favorite, then Lost Temple, and the Blistering Sands. So, BS will be the map for 3v4, LT for 2vX, and Metal for 1vX.
Thanks for voting! ~DI
PS- Crossfire and Incineration Zone have been added to the map pool, and Week's 10 and 11 maps have been changed to these.
I wish you all good luck in the league. I will be sure to check in to see how it is going for everyone. I wish I could say I could help cast the games or something but I have no clue how to do that, so I will just stick to being a fan of the RISING league. I expect you guys to follow me to platinum soon!
I suggest getting a reliable caster as I cannot find any replays or casts for neither rising cup #1 nor rising cup #2 (Unless they were removed to prevent people from studyign their replays, which then I say Bravo.) I dont know how to cast but if hybrid and flow ever need another person to help them commentate i can help (just tell me how to set it up) Good luck to everyone

The vods for the first tournament are still at RQ.TV, while Ipp forgot to record vods for the second tournament.
There seem to be a lot of people who are interested in casting. I suggest we make a list of people who want to cast, and then we can divide up each week's replays between us. The person with the "best cast," considering the quality of the commentary, graphics, and camera movement, should cast the featured game or games each week. Or something along those lines.
Also, if some games are going to be casted, it will mean that all replays from every game must be publicly available for everyone. Otherwise, it would be unfair for players featured in casts.
Awesome idea Karliath on dividing up the casters work load, i like it. Unfortunately, Rocko is now plat, and so on to the next person in line...
And HolySpear, I want us to be gold starting the league. once the league begins, promotion to plat is fine, but i want us to at least begin as gsb only...
HybridFlow appaers to be obsolete now. Day9 is doing "N00by Tuesday's" so newbs helping newbs is not exactly going to be in great request. we'll still definitely do casts of rising league however.
I'm having issues finding someone to fill Karliath's vacant spot... I've sent several PM's out to people who've expressed an interest previously to join the RISING League, yet no one has confirmed yet...
We need someone, currently ranked as gold, silver, or bronze, who is a regular on www.teamliquid.net , and who has a minimum of 25 ladder games played. Preferential treatment goes to those players whom are Terran, Zerg, or Random, as we have quite the number of Protoss, but we need SOMEONE.
So if you're interested, shoot me a PM, and likely, the first non-Protoss who is interested, and meets the above criteria, will get in.
Okay, ready, set, GO! Send me your PMs!
(I also need the following info: teamliquidID, bnet name, bnet personal identifier number, race-preference, and your league standing in 1v1. And as soon as possible, I'll be needing your bio as well, essentially your age, a little bit about you in real life, what you do, your interests, whatever you want to share, and your experience with video games, specifically your RTS games experience. Some samples of bios can be found at our official website:RISING League )
Malawho.174 P Gold Messaged me on bnet the other day about getting in the league when it was full hes the one who knocked me out first round of the 2nd cup so i would love to see people form the cup get in ill talk to him as soon as i see him on next
And as for my BIO I am an 18 year old college student currently living in Frederick maryland I played world of warcraft for 5 years and was fairly high ranked in arenas at about 2200 I started playing starcraft when my programing teacher started a starcraft BW club at the school last year and have been very into it ever since i am going to college to be a lawyer and think of my self as a classhole a classy asshole
Games can commence after the patch, but for those facing off against karliath, (myself and Hayako), we'll wait on that Bo3 until a replacement is made for him...
As for casting: I'll divy up the work load amongst casters, such that we make our best attempt to cast one game from each Bo3... Though this may be impossible due to real life constraints. What I ask though, is for each pairing to consider which game they want of their matches to be casted, and then send that preference along with the 2-3 replays to my email address.
And please understand if your game isn't cast, but in this case you'll be bumped to the top of list for future games you're in.

As for a bio:
I'm an 18 year old college student studying pre-med at The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. I really haven't had much experience with RTS games outside of Command and Conquer. I previously played competitive L4D2 for about the last 6-7 months but most of the games take ~2 hours and it just took too much time with trying to practice 3 or 4 games a day. I got StarCraft2 at launch after hearing some of my online friends get really pumped for it. I played here and there over the summer but not a whole lot other than the campaign and occasional laddering. When I got to school and had way less time, I started taking SC2 more seriously considering I could easily take 40 minutes between classes and play a game or two. I've started watching pro replays and copious amounts of Day9 Daily's (and his cast on Chill vs Combat-Ex, funniest damn video I've ever seen)
Edit: Oh, and I dropped from 1 to 3 because I timed out of two games in a row, and lagged and lost to a 6pool T_T
I got your pm Duncaldaho hopefully that 1st guy in line doesn't show :D

I'm currently ranked 1 in silver terran player that plays 4-7 hours depending on my wins and if i get on a losing streak. I'm 19 years old (turning 20 in december) attending a local community college and getting my associates in general education and then transferring the ASU. My experience with RTS games have been c&c, about a year of bw and a couple other smaller named rts games, Having not played in the beta i feel that i am a little behind, but have watched alot of top tier terran replays and have been watching alot of streams. I'm always up for 1v1 games and I feel that i'm getting better everyday. Over the past 9 years I have been playing mmo's/fps/rts games and i feel that overall I'm generally your above average gamer, sure I hang out with friends for parties but other than that you will find me nerding out on my computer
Hey so b.net is down right now and the patch is going up! if anyone is playing there first round bo3 today let me know id love to spectate! its getting close guys! the RISING league is almost here :D
Is there somewhere collective people can (and they must) upload replays? Or maybe people can just upload them wherever they like, post a link in this thread, and then HybridFlow can add it to the website?
I suggest that we put all the games from a set in a .zip. More convenient than downloading three possible files.
Oh well, it was worth it try. It's not like it should have worked haha.
Hi,
We add tournaments to the tracker for two reasons: 1. To help our users know what to register for. 2. To help our users follow tournament results.
We feel that if neither of these two reasons is satisfied, we shouldn't add a tournament to the tracker. Your tournament no longer has registration. It only has fourteen people and will run for many weeks. While we appreciate the community effort and involvement, and we feel it is important for tournaments to cater to players of all skill levels, we feel that for these above reasons, we cannot add your tournament to the tracker.
On September 22 2010 12:02 Sevryn wrote: where do i send my replays cause me and elli have already done our games they are on stoids channel
What we can do is 1. have people upload the replays themselves. 2. send everything to the admin, and then the admin will upload all of the replays as they come.
I don't know if we can. We applied once, but there seemed to be some problems with the .tk redirecting and such, so we have re-applied. We'll see if anything changes.
Okay, I've made the decision to replace Karliath's vacant seat with Boblhead (Bobhlead.735) silver
Welcome to the league! ~DI
PS-My apologies on the delay, but master's thesis work is no walk in the park...
Furthermore, if I can get an email with all of your (all of you, not just Bob) replays for week 1, that would be awesome. email: bchaney at psychology dot ou dot edu In the subject line please put "rising league", and in the text of the email, please give me a list of the maps, who won each map, and a "if you only casted one of these games, please cast game#X" preference. Attempts will be made to cast everything, but that's quite a task, so no promises...
Thanks again everyone, and Week1 seems to be off to a good start! And thanks again to Stoids for his amazing casting thus far. I didn't assign games to him, but he took the initiative and did it anyways! That's what I like to see...
If there are any games which have not been casted yet, please let me know, and I'll do my best to assign it to someone.

would it be alright if i swaped to terran for the league there are just so many toss and i would like to make it more interesting and im kinda not like protosses play style more and more ive played terran at the same level and do ladder as terran every now and then
I'm willing, since it's still early, but I'd like to see how the other players think first. Also, Hayako is wanting to do the same, but from terran to zerg. We definitely could use less toss, and definitely more zerg, so I'm cool with this, but I don't want an open revolt, of course.
And I will say if we do agree to do this, then you're stuck as that race for the rest of the season. No more changes!

So Sevryn/Nyrves, you wish to change to terran... Final decision? No turning back...
Okay, so I thought www.sc2replayed.com would work for uploading replays and linking them to the forums, but I can't seem to find the replays I uploaded? Does anyone know how to work that site, or is there a more reliable website elsewhere?
Will be on tonight to do some casting. Had a quick round of tests that I had to get out of the way. Will be good to go tonight.
Also going to plug myself here and say I am casting the Undeniably Gamer #5 this Sunday, so come out and support me :D. Fenix, Trump, HasHe, Drewbie are some of the common participants.
Undeniably Gamer is also doing a Gold and below tournament this Saturday if any of you are interested in signing up.

I didn't like what I was seeing. I got the impression that someone was listening to the stream while playing, which is fucking disgraceful. You guys are gold and below players in a custom game, simply trying to improve. There should be some type of mutual respect for each other in matters like that. If I feel like is something that can happen again I'll stop casting live or stop casting all together.
Look, I'm doing this shit out of the goodness of my heart. I want you guys to get better because I like seeing progress. If the only reason you win games is because you have an unfair advantage, you're not only cheating this entire league but also yourself.
I understand the reason HuK doesn't play tournaments with live casters, because the problem is a real one. I'm actually amazed though that it could happen in a GOLD AND BELOW LEAGUE.
I didn't see what you guys are talking about, granted I only watched mid game around 14 minutes. however if he was listening or watching when you guys were saying he was why didn't he go and take that expansion that had ALL of bobs workers mining with no defense if he was watching he wouldn't have pushed in when there were more than one sieged up tanks which in the end caused him to lose his army?
If I am missing something let me know but I mean I know if I was watching the stream(lol) I would of went for the open expo amirite?
edit: just watched it again, and my points still stand I think, if he was watching why did he attack 5(?) siege tanks when that expo was easy target for a small drop to get bob to unsiege or anything I just don't see any cheating at all in that match..
If he was cheating(which i hope he wasnt) i would hope that he apologizes cause just when watching the replay theres like 2-3 parts that just see iffy to me, i really hope he wasnt cheating.
As for stoids i'm gonna try to hotkey stuff and put more guys on gas hopefully by the time this league is over ill have gotten better with my macro and everything.

I really dident want to discuss this on the open public fourme but it looks like im going to have to. After rewatching the replay multiple times i can see were some of your concerns come from. But to be honest, im really sad, angry, and just right pissed off that im being completely falsely accused. I can honestly say that at no point during that entire match was I in the broadcast. There some strange occurences through out the match, but if you watch closley each has a perfectly reasonable explanation. 1: Flying factory over to base: I merely built the factory to to get a starport and wasent planning to use it after, ive seen many games on youtube were people use factory as a scout so I did it. Complete luck that you happened to say what you did about the factory. But if you look at no point did i intend to land the factory (you cant see the green outline of the destination) i all along planned to use factory as a scout 2: Battle in middle (16 minutes) I was moving my army out to engage my oppenent at his base, i stopped when i realised hes got siege tanks and i have got banshees that i can use to snipe them out during the attack. so I stopped my army because i dident want to just send them in and get out of postion, and i brought my bashees up to my army. Than on my mini map i saw the dots of his main army right in front of mine, i quickly pulled back again so that i wouldent be caught out of position. Than something amazing happened, we had the same thought process at the same time, i realized if i run in there and stim and focus down his seige tanks, that would be a good idea. Which is exactly what I did, you can than see me swing my banshees around to try and help with sniping out the siege tanks. 3: During the cast when my Bob put his third down you said it was a hidden expansion. If i was really listing I probably would have "scouted" to find the base and taken it out.
Though I do appreciate you casting the games for the league, and the help you provide to everyone. You could not be more wrong of what has happened this game, as i was NOT listing in to your broadcast. I think coming out and cussing me on the video and on the fourme without even talking to me first is extremely disrespectful, and it really makes me sad to think that you may have hurt my "rep" for this league so badly that I may not even be able to compete.

To be honest, i hope some apologies are sent my way. It is really frustrating when you are accused for something you did not do, and the things that have been said to me have been completely out of line.
tbh alot of top tier players scout using a factory, and i have also stimmed into a seige line, tbh maybe coincidence. TBH i dont care anymore i just want to finish our series

I didn't throw you under the bus. I stopped casting because I didn't feel comfortable doing it. Your rep isn't hurt here and I didn't come and say "HAYAKO WAS LISTENING TO ME." There even was a discussion before games about whether "listening to the stream would even be helpful." My post was merely an ultimatum to the members of this league. We're here to improve and get better. My commentary and opinion are just that, opinionated. I'm not PC, nor do I claim or try to be. I call it like I see it and if I feel the least bit uncomfortable I will leave games right there. I'm not going to try to damage control if I offended people.

Hey, you're the one that wanted to "improve your casting." There's also no reason to shorten people's names when they don't need to be shortened.

I wouldn't call what I'm doing "casting."
Well, even if you are only practicing for "casting," however you may want to define it, it's still not good.
Honestly I don't mind doing anything. I'll cast replays, live streams, make vods etc et. Any practice I can get for casting. Also my info is Stoids.983

Yeah. I mean we all appreciate you casting the games for us, as having vods > not having vods in the most basic sense.
That said, I assume that one of the reasons you are here is because you want to improve your casting like you initially stated. So I'm just pointing out that people don't swear during casts, especially at the players, nor do they shorten players' names when it's unnecessary.

It's up to you whether you want to listen to the advice. I don't have any problem with you swearing in the videos. However, if you are trying to improve as you've stated, there really isn't an argument as to whether swearing is acceptable.
im going to have say that it really comes down to each indivudal caster as to wether swearing is apropriate but do know that day9 has been know to swear as do many casters on livestreams but at formal events like mlg he doesnt all i know is that his tactic of "just fucking kill him" seems to work
I also like the "how do i win with this strat? easy just lose my whole fucking base"
I dunno about you guys, but I love Stoid's casting The cursing makes it entertaining and fun to watch Hes not casting for MLG or a huge sponsored event its okay for him to swear Also hes doing this out of his own free will and I think we are starting to take him for granted
I wish I was good enough at the beginning of this to actually join haha. If it goes for another tournament and I'm sitll in gold, I'm definitely joining in.
Gah! Gabeski, something just came up, and I'm not free from 6 - 1am Eastern Time. And I have the GSB Saturday, so maybe earlier today, later tomorrow, or Sunday? I hate being busy...
FYI, my stats are wrong on the website. I'm 4-2, not 4-1. Doesn't matter now, but I don't want to end up doing well, somehow end up at a tiebreaker, and win it off of incorrect data.

Alright, I'm working on my master's thesis proposal defense, and have been afk a few days. This next week will be equally difficult, but my defense is in 2 Mondays from then, so I'll be able to monitor things a tad more closely after then. So, please bear with me if I'm not here to regulate any problems that may arise.
One thing though, I really need an email from every Bo3, replays and a quick list of what maps were played for each game, and who won, expecting me to watch each of them and figure it out for myself may seem reasonable, and I'll do my best, but it would really help my busy grad school scheudle if I get at least this quick synopsis. (If you'd like to give me more details about how the games went, eg, "I 6pooled him, but he held off, pushed with mech in the midgame, but I teched to broodlords and roaches, held him off a little bit, but eventually his economic advantage won the game," all the better, though I don't expect it.) And again, my email address is bchaney at psychology dot ou dot edu (at=@ and dot=.).
As for this tisk about the watching the stream, I think things could have been handled a bit better. If there is a suspicion, voice it, but please don't resort to name calling. However, I will say that Stoids is doing a great service to us, for free, and he has my respect, despite his "colorful" casting style, which I do find quite entertaining, and let's face it, we do some stupid shit as gold and below, and getting made fun of makes the casts that much more enjoyable, so just take it on the cuff. In any case, let's be adults about this, and from what I've heard from Hayako, and what I know about him as a person, I highly doubt he was watching the stream, but nevertheless I will review the video, as I haven't had time to do so yet. And although I believe Hayako for now, I highly doubt it will be possible to prove any cheating, so I'm going to just take this oppurtunity to say, let's all just agree not to chat/watch the stream/hack/etc., and hopefully we'll be honorable about this. Furthermore, resorting to this bickering is highly volatile towards the community, which is really supposed to just be a bunch of friendly chums, playing some friendly games, while trying to improve.
I'l review this matter, and pass my judgment, but the worst case scenario I can foresee is the highly unlikely possibility of me deciding that Hayako did cheat, but being unable to prove it, and me simply telling him that we all know what he did, though since we can't prove it, he can stay, but he better not do it again. Though I'm sure his moves can be chalked up to a good sense of intuition, mixed with somewhat solid play. Against Hayako, he is a formidible opponent, and unless I do some sort of early game crush against him, the longer the game goes on, the less and less likeli it becomes that I'll win against him, and I've learned this about him through several of our practice games. I want to say we're 2 for 2, dead even, for our 4 games we've played, but the two I won were typically me exploiting an early mistake he made, and the two he won were games which went somewhat longer.
I do agree with Stoids refusing to cast game 2, as if there ever is any suspiscion, by all means, please do so. However, let's try to be civil, though I honestly haven't seen the cast, so perhaps Stoids was simply being his colorful self while intending his comments to be taken lightly, I don't know yet. But in any case, I respect all of you, and I think all members involved honestly mean what they say, and I doubt anyone is being unreasonable, in that everyone is simply doing what they believe to be the best course of action, given their perspective.
Regardless, keep sending me replays, results, and which maps each game was played upon.
And know this, I love you all <3 :D ~DI
PS- And as for the cutesy names Stoids gives us, I think its not meant out of spite, but is somewhat entertaining, and endearing... I wonder what he'll call me? :p I thought it was slightly amusing that HybridFlow refered to me as "Duncan Hidaho" :p I hide them well, yes I do... lol

Okay, so I watched the clip, and here's my opinion.
Hybrid at first seemed to be jokingly saying that he's watching. Well, if he truly was, we should have seen much, much more exploitation. I think with Hybrid's constant "he's so watching this," it had a psychological effect. Perhaps Stoids assumed Hybrid was suggesting that he was in the user list on ustream, and took the suggestion as fact. However, I will say this.
The factory scout is quite common. Getting cloak, is quite common. STIMMING AFTER BEING SCANNED, AND THEN RUSHING IN, IS QUITE COMMON. If I got scanned, that tells me, huh, he must be trying to pelt me with seige tanks at his choke, and after all, his hellions did see my army incoming. Thus, if I push now, things might be good. That's totally reasonable.
Furthermore, he never banshee'd or dropped in his main back by the min line like Stoids suggested, nor did he seem to realize the existence of the hidden expo at 9 o'clock. Simply flying in a rax, researching cloak, and stimming b4 pushing after getting scanned when it's apparent he knows your army is incoming, are all reasonable, and typical things. Now, had Stoids said, he should expand now, and immediately see an expansion, said, he should fly his banshees in right here right now, and say immediately we saw them moving exactly where the caster said, then that would make sense. Finally, had he truly been watching, I bet he wouldn't have sacrificed his army into that siege line, and instead stopped the advance, and medivac'd into the main, avoiding the seige line, which he did not. Stoids also suggested a seige near his expo and to not bother with the supply depot block, both of which were good advice we didn't see Hayako respond to. Honestly, if Hayako was cheating by watching, we would have seen way more exploitation, not just the small shit that was funny to joke about with comments like, "he's so watching this". And had he been watching, truly watching, he would have done some stuff you didn't suggest, simply by knowing the placements of various buildings in Bob's main.
And finally, and most importantly, HAYAKO LOST. He may be gold, but he's no complete idiot. If he truly had this advantage, he so would have won, or at least known it was safe to expand more. Also, he didnt put any extra scv's on the one scv refinery, which even had he done, would be accountable as, well I guess he realized that, but he didn't, and continued to mine at a much slower rate.
I hereby decree that Hayako is innocent, and I clear his name of any wrong-doing in my book, as should all of you. This is rude, stupid, and paranoid to resort to such accusations, and without a ton of obvious evidence, making such accusations is irresponsible and immature. Hayako, I apologize to you for everyone's actions.
However, again, I love you all, let's remember we're here to have fun, and let's do exactly that, HAVE FUN. Thanks again for the casting, and I hope you continue, Stoids, to cast for us, no hard feelings, and we all appreciate everything you do.
I definitely think I'm missing results. Please let me know.
I am still missing the results of Ellisandre v PointyBagels, Fluffy v Nyrves (which I'm pretty sure has been done), Gabeski v Hybrid, and finally Chris v Gabeski. These games must be completed before tuesday when the week resets.

Me and chris played earlier this week. Chris beat me 2-1. I asked on the last page whether both players had to send replays, but i wasnt sure so I didnt, I'll send the replays out later tonight
I was on for a bit at 6, than ate dinner and came back at about 7:15 and didnt see him on. im on now, but if its too late than just give me the loss, i just want to avoid causing any issues at this point.
Sorry for interrupting, but... *twitch* the writing on the banner is... a bit too far to the left. *twitch* Secondly, the 'season lineup' you put in spoilers is fubar, a garbled mess. Might wanna repair that I guess. Thirdly, while Crossfire technically is Blizzard-made as you claimed, it's a remake of the proleague map Sin Peaks of Baekdu.
I checked the thread to see what server you were on. Seems it's NA so nevermind me.
We did leave at 7:15. We must have just missed you. Also, we can just maybe have the both of you play three series each next week. Its not like its super inflexible.
Eh we need to make some kind of rule about this. Like, how long a person has to wait for their opponent after the agreed playing time.
Gabeski's reply, "I know, he isnt on," was given 2 hours after Flowandebb's comment, "Gabeski. Youre supposed to be playing hybris as we speak." Hybrid, I (wanted to obs, lol), and I'm assuming Flowandebb waiting an hour.
Now, if everyone (concerned) is cool about it, I think this match should just be rescheduled. In the future, however, I think it would be best to set up more precise play times, and also a rule as to how long a player has to wait after that time before his opponent automatically forfeits the round.

1. The banner is actually longer. With the new TL image upload system, things got messed up. 2. The season line up is just something we use to know who is playing against who. The "real" schedule is posted on the website. That said, it should probably be renamed huh? 3. Did not know that.
I propose that everyone is given 1 week after the week they are supposed to play to play their matches if not it is recorded as a 2-0 loss for both players.
On September 27 2010 11:36 HolySpear wrote: I propose that everyone is given 1 week after the week they are supposed to play to play their matches if not it is recorded as a 2-0 loss for both players.
I agree with this. However, if one player openly states that he is ready to play, but the opponent is never on, then the opponent should get the 2-0 loss and the first player should get a 2-0 win. It's not the first player's fault, so the opponent essentially forfeits the set.
What I was referring to, however, is when two players agree to play at a certain time, but one doesn't show up. For example, two players may agree to play at 3 pm. What happens if one player doesn't show up by 3:15, 3:30, 4:00? It's not fair for the other player. What if they decide to reschedule afterward, and one player again doesn't show up for some time? What's the time limit, and the reschedule limit?
I understand that it may be hard for people to schedule exact times to play. What I suggest is that players agree on a rough time/date, and when that times comes closer, an exact time is set. Then, if a player does not show up after 30 minutes, he forfeits the set.

Alright... See, this is why I left things unstructured, as far as the weekly rounds. It would be one thing if someone doesn't show if this were a tournament being held in a specific night. However, that's not the case, and players are free to arrange a time to meet. I have a few axioms that were in mind when I did structure things as I did, and where i left things unstructured, i did so on purpose, for the most part.
Most important point: I do not want players to win by technicalities (e.g., opponents forfieted games due to inability to show)
Season games are not scheduled at an exact time and date: I wanted this to be somewhat casual, in order to decrease losses due to nerves. I hoped that everyone can be honorable and make the times which they arrange to play, yet I do realize the possibility of real life issues getting in the way, thus the unstructured nature of playing within the week.
Players should make their best attempt to live up to deals made: Although I understand things such as, "I ran into a boss/colleague/professor and had to chit-chat, in order to maintain professional relations, and giving some excuse like, 'Oh, look at the time, I have to go play a video game, I'll catch you later.' Might be inappropriate," or illness, car accidents, bad internet problems, etc. However, things such as, "Oh crap, I forgot, my bad," or frankly, inexcusable.
Although this is meant to be all in good fun, I don't want players abusing the system of kindness, nor abuse technicalities: I really was averse to setting down concrete rules such as forfieting if not arriving within 30min, etc., since players may feel it wise under such conditions to throw up their hands and say, "Well i tried, I'll just be unavailable for any times he/she attempts to make up for the game, and thus I win." Given this possibility, and in light of the "most important point" above, I intend on handling such issues on a case by case scenario, rather than setting forth anything concrete.
Despite the unstructured nature of weekly matches, the finals will be structured: I will coordinate schedules of those going into the finals/semifinals/etc., and we will agree on a date and time to play, and forfeitures will be possible and likely in case of no-shows. Furthermore, any ties or seatings that may change due to incomplete matches from the season weeks will be calculated if there were a possibility of changing the line-ups, such as say, bob has won 20 games, lost 4, and is waiting to play 2 others due to inability to coordinate schedules, but say the 4 in the finals won 21 games, thus making it possible for bobto have entered, then that may be an issue in need of resolution before the finals commence, but we can cross that bridge when/if we get there. However, say bob hasnt played 2 matches, but would need 4 match wins in order to get in, then who cares?
Final Words: Just let me know of any issues, attempt to make up matches later on in the season if you haven't finished/started them, and be honorable, and don't no-show without a good reason and a good apology.
hey hybrid, i'll be on for a bit tonight, probably idling while I do some english homework. if you pop on sometime i'm down to get our series done tonight though. once again sorry about the other day hah :x

I'm not gonna be on for most of the night. But I guess I could get on at Midnight my time (2 am EST), and face you. Also, I'm free pretty much tomorrow, after school of course.

after school and soccer tommorow i'll be free. Around 6:30 ish EST is when i could mostly likely be getting on, i'd be able to play almost anytime after that though so when do you think is best for you?
Okay, so I'm like super busy with master's research and stuff... Can someone do me the kindness of letting me know the results of every Bo3, since I've received so few emails, and those that I have I don't have the time to go through? :p Ty guys
And woohoo on the adsense! By the way, I'm not supposed to encourage you guys to click the ads incesently, and I made a pledge upon signing up for adsense for the site, that I would not click on it myself, nor would I encourage anyone who visits the site to click it... So, yeah, hopefully we get clicks from people out there, money pools for the winners are always awesome...
So no, I'm not going to ask you to do any clicking 2-3 times daily, nope not going to do it...

I can imagine a thread we could make, "Higher level players, laugh at your inferiors! Lower level players, learn from our mistakes.
You know what, I agree. Let's just make this a case by case basis then. As long as someone doesn't fail to show up continuously, we should be ok.
I just wanted to say, I thought that was a great first week I got to play some fun games but more importantly watch a lot of good games and added a lot of people onto my friends list :D

Yeah, when we all are awesome diamond players, now we have practice partners!
Yeah I see that casting all three games could be a task, but playing a Bo1 against your opponent would be lame, one cheese and you win for that week or lose. With a Bo3 I can see how the other guy plays and change my play style in the next game.

I would be pretty shocked if you guys cheesed in a GSB league....
Just a suggestions, pretty much having Bo3 makes it impossible to cast because I can't set aside that many hours a week for casting, and I have other obligations right now (UT tourneys, etc).
It would be no different than sports in RL. You play 1 game and that's it. Playoffs are where that changes.
The "change play style" argument is a little overrated. In all the games I casted, for the most part at least, the same strategies were employed by the same player. I actually encourage GSB players to learn 1 strategy for each race and perfect it.
Example, 3 Rax vs. Protoss. If you can perfect that build and have a nice timing push you can win literally 80% of games in GSB v. Protoss. I know P's who 4 gated their way to the top of diamond. Far too often players attempt to replicate the cutesy stuff they see their favorite players doing. At this point having solid macro and 1aing into your opponents base is totally viable. Once you are comfortable with macro and micro components and your APM is a little higher, the amount of builds and strategies open up. Better to be able to execute 3 builds to perfection than it is to know 100 great strategies that you can half ass.

I feel that we could keep the way its going, but maybe you only have to cast one game? BTW, me vs Gabeski very soon.
EDIT: Also, when you get to diamond with the four gate, that's all you will have... You'll get crushed in diamond and get demoted because you don't have the knowledge to be able to face a 4 gate counter.

Sorry guys, I quit asap. I hope I didn't lag the game too much. My internet likes to crash on me a lot, like every 3 minutes in a random 2 hour period. Remember when it crashed twice (yes, it did) during the RISING Cup #1 finals?
Anyways, if you guys want to discuss Ellisandre and me here....

Then only casting one game when you can should work or maybe we all can work something out. Also I know that for me I hate Desert Oasis I will veto that map every time I can, since this week starts on DO if it was a Bo1 I would basically guarantee myself a loss. but I am just putting in my two cents.
Hey guys, FYI, I work 2 ½ jobs, so make sure you answer my PMs way ahead of schedule. I can't do anything last minute, I have to at least plan it before I leave work. Otherwise I pick up work at one of my other jobs when I leave my full time gig.
Again, I'll be on after Thursday, Sep 30 1:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) today, so PlusMinus and Hayako, if you're available at that time, that would be super awesome... :D
And if anyone wants to cast/observe...
~DI
PS- Stoids, thanks again for all the casting you do, we all love you to pieces. As for the Bo3 vs Bo1, I must say that we never intended you to have to cast every game, however you're more than welcome to do so, no one will complain, yet if you can't, as would be more reasonable, cherry pick the games, etc. Perhaps we could suggest which game to cast? But in any case, ty for everything you do, and we won't hate you if you can't cast everything...
If Ellisandre and/or boblhead want to set up are matches for this week let me know I should be available today and tomorrow maybe Friday and not sure about Saturday night :O

I would be open to filling Ellisandre's spot. That said, my previous post still stands, and I won't be able to practice for each match as I previously intended. Basically, I'll just be signing on to play my assigned match-ups, and then signing off.

I'm all for this change, as far as you replacing him, but as for your suggesting Rocko, he's platinum these days...
So, are we sure that Ellisandre has left the building? If so, all in favor of readmiting Karliath to his spot? And lastly, how should we go about scores, let Karliath inherit Ellisandre's scores, make him replay the week1 matches, start Karliath at 0? I'm open to suggestions, but note that if we do start him at 0, he'll be at a slight disadvantage, in that he'll have fewer oppurtunities for winning. However, to make it fair for Karliath, perhaps allowing him to "re-do" his week1 matches would be a good idea, however that may hurt anyone who beat Ellisandre, as we'd probably need to erase those outcomes.
Unless of course, Ellisandre is still with us and intends to finish...
IDK, it's whatever :p ~DI

About the picture: All you have to do is tick a setting in your profile. TL was testing out some new image uploading stuff, and so there was a new feature added.
I don't mind inheriting Ellisandre's losses. I hope it doesn't sound as if I'm insincere, but I'm not out to win the league this season. I don't want to set such a goal unless I can have the time to practice and improve. Basically, I just want to participate more in our little community.

sorry, but cheese is part of the game, didnt you watch GSL were fruitdealer 6 pooled oGsInca.... in the semi finals!

He did scout it, he just put up his forge waaaaay too late, I had 4 zealots in his base by the time he put it up. I used it cause I'm st damn scared of his 4 gate. Anyways, Chris, if you're reading this, we can ignore that match and have a rematch on blistering sands, where I'm leading 1-0. Basically restart as if I had never cheesed.
I couldn't get a hold of Boblhead or Karliath so I guess we can try to play our games sometime tomorrow before I write a speech. Just let me know guys :D
i personaly think if you lose to cheese its your fault because cheese tends to put the cheeser at a disadvantage and as you can see even at gsl level play people cheese so you should try to learn how to counter cheese because people do it at all levels

Seriously? "Cheese" is allowed, and something to prepare for. If we just play assuming cheese won't happen, then that stacks the odds somewhat, and to be fair, all possibilities of losing should be considered to defend against. And "honor", whatever that means, does not mean "no-cheese". Honor means playing your best, accepting defeat graciously, and not making use of exploits (cheese is not an exploit, but say there was a portion on the map that bugs and someone can sit a unit there and be invincible, then that's an exploit). "Cheese", whatever that is (anything sneaky rather than an in your face traditional fight? pfft.. How did the Americans win the Revolutionary War? We used geurilla tactics, something the British would have cried "cheese" about, but it was the only way we could devise to beat them, what with our smaller numbers and lesser weapons, and any American would likely applaud the ingenuity of our ancestors.) And to be fair, cheese can be scouted, and maybe had you sent a probe to his base, noticed no buildings/fewer buildings, it should have tingled your spidy-sense into action. Furthermore, it leaves his base horribly undefended, giving you an edge if you can overcome his proxy, which you should be capable of doing. Even the pros see cheese, and use it to keep each other on their toes, and a win is a win is a win.
But in any case, I'll miss you if you're truly out, though I will say you have quite a good record so far, better than most, and I think your chances are still high of getting into the finals... Well think about it Chris, but if you're still set in your ways, then so be it, but I urge you to reconsider... I, and I'm sure everyone else here, consider(s) you a friend, and a worthy opponent.
~Duncan Idaho
PS-And by the way, just for honor's sake, I "cheese" about 33% of the time, if no one's noticed... (although I like to call it a super-early rush, "cheese" is something losers like to use to define anything that causes them to lose the game before the mid-late stages, apparently such people invision a "bubble of honor" surrounding the field of battle until they decide to push, and then magically that's the time pushes are allowed... What, 5min, 8min? It's all arbitrary to be honest...)

No, you won. Chris needs to learn to deal with it. I like him, but there's no whining in official games like this. That's a very honorable offer, but he needs to get over it.
I will try to be in-game in 30 min ><, and also in 8 hours.
There seem to be a lot of Week 2 games unplayed/unreported.
I know I'm part of the problem, but we still need to get better at this. However casual this league may be, getting backed up on set after set isn't going to be fun for anyone.
I have messaged boblhead multiple times now in game and on here and I can't get a response when we can play our week two. At least I am able to see the times you say you can play hopefully i can catch you online.
Guys come on no flame wars. This is a place to get better in fun and meaningful competition. Lets all just remember that. grats Chris on reaching platinum, I hope to join you soon ^^.
Week 3 games will be done once I'm not lazy and ordered standings will be done once all game 2 games have been completed. Otherwise, website has been updated.

Think you can be available today, Thursday, Oct 07 1:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)? I should be on from then, for about 2-3 hours onward. Hope to see you there! (I'm playing Fluffy and Flow, so that goes for both of ya, if you're available of course, otherwise I'll be on during the daytime hours 8am-3pmThurs and Fri, CDT. (central daylight time)

LOL. Haven't checked this thread in a while. Way to rage quit a GSB league. Just because you have the ability to four gate doesn't mean you have "any skill" champ.

also, could Shakuras Plateau be added to the map pool? it's a great new map that was just added to the ladder maps.
I say sure, let's add shakuras plateau (which was in the beta for a short while) and jungle basin, since they're in the 1v1 pool now. So essentially, we have the current 1v1 pool, plus kulas ravine, desert oasis(the new one with the rocks), incineration zone and crossfire. I'll adjust the later weeks 1st maps to add these two, by removing any redundant maps. As this is all about getting better, and these 2 maps are now going to be in the deciding process as to whether we get promoted beyond plat, then we might as well start using them.
One question though, as we now have 13 maps on the pool, do we want to increase the number of winner's vetoes to 2? Or keep it at 1? Just a thought...
As for the new people wanting in, I say it's up to everyone already in the league. I think they should all start with no record if they're going to be joining us late, but how exactly we want to go about doing this, I don't know... Any suggestions?
Edit: Week's 12 and 13 first maps updated to be jungle basin and shakuras plateau, removed the repeats of Steppes of War and Kulas Ravine which were there previously.
Hybrid and Nyrves: Ive been really busy this week as Ive had exams all this week Im not at my computer...I just leave starcraft on <_<; but yeah I should be on either today or tomorrow but if I dont answer please dont get too pissed at me We can also reschedule, sorry but Im just so booked this week =[

keep us posted.. been looking for a league! dunno how i overlooked this originally
EDIT: and yea totally fine with starting at 0 record. in it to win, but mostly just for fun =]
pointy and plusminus, sorry for not responding for a few days lol, SAT prep has been hectic. i shhould be free most of this weekend though, today around 8 EST would be best for me though, im going out in a few
I dont understand how new people can just join though? that would mess up everything, like whos playing who in each week and everything. The only way it would work if you replaced someones spot who is dropping out.
TBH we should finish out this league and then you can organize another, considering we have played 12+ games it wouldnt be fair for us already in the league to just let somone else in if we drop people then just continue from there, we should also shorten the league by like 5 weeks, considering we lost 3 people already, just my opinion
Okay, been busy with life and so such. So who all's out, and who all wants in again? No flood of new requests please, just those who've expressed interest prior to my post here.

Holy shit that awesome dude! Ill be watching all weekend
Same, the league has pretty much died and really only should of lasted a couple weeks, tbh it was a good idea, just not enough interest from the players in the league, ive have talked to a couple other people that would agree with me. Was fun for a little bit but in the end just died, if you redo the league do it for 2-3 weeks, cause lets face it this 1st league only really lasted 3 before people started dropping like flies.

Duncan, I'm interested in playing if there are any available spots, I'm a Z player, Gold league player atm, and I have a pretty loose schedule.. Please let me know! Thanks Duncan, looking forward to this! Shortys.599
And people leaving are: hybrid/l1f3 chris flowandebb
If that's correct, then I say all aboard! However your ratings will start at 0, no wins, no losses, but you're free to play week 4 games onward...
Chromatose will take hybrid's slot, Gemini chris's, and Shortys flow's. Assuming everyone is in agreement, I'll make the necessary changes. Also, please repond in this thread with your race and current league(bronze/silver/gold), whether you've said it already or not.
Thanks! ~DI
PS-Is PlusMinus out of the league? Seems he's been ignoring everyone (including my own PMs, both on TL forums and in-game, as if he's mysteriously afk all the time...), so we may need a forth person to replace him...
Will there be other RISING leagues/tournaments? I would like to get involved and play. This is the sort of thing I have been wanting to do for a while now and it seems like fun as I am just a lowly Bronze player and never get to try tournaments

Sure, why not. So, then, you'll take boblhead's slot. And I'm guessing we'll need a 5th now for PlusMinus...
Okay, thread page 1 updated for the 4 new members. I say this: If there are any games from previous weeks which your player you replaced has not been rated for, then please try to make it up, playing the 1st map for that missed week. Look at your player number, then look at the results from previous weeks, and if no results are listed in the first thread, then you're free to make it up, in order to pad your rating, as a way to make up somewhat for starting with a 0 rating. Currently, it's still week4, so be sure to do your week4 games asap, preferably by Sunday, and week5 starting monday will be posted shortly.
If you can't coordinate schedules with your opponent, then just make it up as soon as you can, using whatever 1st map from that week it was supposed to be played in. Be sure to add everyone's id with their battlenet id code in order to track them down, and also send PM's to their TL username (sometimes different from their bnet name, but it's listed in parentheses in the competitor list on the first post on page one, under the Competitiors spoiler tag.), in order to coordinate a good time to meet them online.
Happy gaming!! And by the way, I still need a 5th player to replace Plus Minus. ~DuncanIdaho
Hey guys sorry I haven't gotten a hold of my opponents yet this week, been really busy, anyways if the people waiting to play me want to set up a match time we can try to work it out :D
im interested but im in the USMC and shipout December 13th, and will be gone for 7 months, but would like to compete for fun until then, is that possible?
So, yeah... no one's been sending replays and or results except a select few, and several have been having trouble (myself included) contacting opponents for a game... So, it seems the league has officially died of old age...
Comments?
Eh, I think the main problem is that it was too long of a season, with too little of a carrot at the end. As I was telling Hayako earlier, perhaps had there been a $1000 prize at stake, people would be more into getting games done, but oh well...
Unless I get a resounding "NOO!! It is not over!" from like, everyone, and start seeing my email box filled with game results, I'm declaring this league officially geriactric, and sending it to the old folks home. I mean, I'm not trying to be spiteful, nor do I feel anger towards any of you, but let's not kid ourselves, things haven't been as revved up as they once were...
In any case, it's been fun, and we've all made good friends, and I'm always open to a friendly match and/or teaming up. See ya around guys. ~Duncan Idaho
