Hello, everyone! I'm going to be hosting the second Open Wolf Cup on 11 July 2010. This tournament is open to all players, regardless of rank/ladder standing. It will take place on the US servers (sorry EU/Asia, blame Blizzard) and may actually have a prize pool (TBA).
If you are interested in taking part in this open tournament, email verdruss@gmail.com with your character name you will use when the beta returns, race, and realID email. If you don't want to email me, feel free to PM me instead. Alternatively, you could post your information in the thread, but that's harder to keep track of (and you don't want to get misplaced).The tournament will have 64 players, but continue to sign up, as last tournament we had about ten or fifteen backups needed. Keep watching this thread, as it will be updated with important information very regularly.
SIGNUPS ARE CLOSED
However, there is still a possibility that you will be able to play if you show up on time. If you are a selected backup, when you join the IRC, make your nickname with a backup tag (ex: smith_backup). If you want to play, but aren't selected as a backup, make your nickname with an alternate tag (ex: smith_alt). Alternates are less likely to show up than actual tournament participants, so if you really want to play, it can't hurt to show up.
This tournament will take place on the US Servers on Sunday 11 July,
at 3:00 PM, EST (GMT -5).
Prize Pool: $50 (unless I get donations before Sunday)

Rules:
Until the semifinals, this tournament will be played in single-elimination rounds. At the semifinals, a best-of-three will be played, and the finals will be a best-of-five set. Many players will probably disagree with this, but it's for the sake of time. Unfortunately this tournament would be FAR too long if the sets were longer for elimination. If a player fails to show up for his match, he will lose by default (as of now). Future tournaments will be structured differently, especially invitationals.
In the single-elimination rounds, the maps available will be Lost Temple, Steppes of War, and Blistering Sands. Both players can eliminate one map, and the remaining map will be played. As for the semifinals and finals, the maps available will be Lost Temple, Steppes of War, Scrap Station, Metalopolis, and Kulas Ravine. Both players can eliminate two maps from that list. Every time a player loses, they will be able to pick the next map to be played.
This tournament will be race-restricting, so once you pick a race, you cannot swap during the tournament. However, if you'd like to change races before the tournament begins, contact me and let me know.
Tournament Procedure:
Essentially, at 2:30 PM EST, I would like ALL players to join my IRC channel (see http://thepassingshadow.com/IRC_Chat.html ). Players will use their exact character name as their nickname in IRC (put an underscore afterwards if there are problems with the nick being taken, which can sometimes happen with connection errors). The bracket will be posted so that players can see who their first opponents are. Once in IRC, players should find their opponents and PM them (/msg <username> <message> ) and start sending realID information so that they can add each other as friends. After that, the players should enter a party with one another, do map eliminations to decide which map they will be playing on (see map rules below), and then wait for me to tell everyone to begin their first match (will happen around 3 PM EST). What happens if your opponent does not show up ? PM me in IRC letting me know, and I will either replace your opponent with someone on the waiting list or let you know that you will receive a lucky free win (bye) and will wait for the second round to begin.
After I announce in IRC to begin, all 32 parties will play their first game. Whenever someone finishes their first game, the WINNER will PM me on IRC, specifying both who won and who lost. Once all groups of players have sent me the winners and losers, and EVERY game of the first round is finished, the second bracket will be posted and players will once again PM each other with realIDs and join parties. Once everyone appears to be set up, the second round will begin, and once again, the WINNER will PM me on IRC with both the winner and the loser. This will repeat until the semifinals.
The first two players I choose to commentate will play first, and I will add them as realID friends, and invite them to my party. In party chat, map will be decided, and the first game will begin, and I will commentate. The round will be a best out of three with counter-picks for maps, and then the next players will play. After that, the two finalists will choose maps again, and the same procedure will take place with me commentating, except with a best of five. Afterwards, the winner will be announced and everyone will be free to ask for rematches, etcetera etcetera, ask me questions in chat.
What happens in a dispute over who won the match ? I will add one of the players' realIDs, and look at match history. If there is a further dispute, I will ask for the replay file.

I think that tournament is going to take place over a few days, so there may be some overlap. There's no dates set for that tournament either (as far as I know).

1. Reserved slots are for well-known players who I would like to participate in the tournament, and told me they'd try to, and I'm waiting to hear back from them (ex: Sheth, KawaiiRice).
2. Incineration zone is going to be taken off. I know a ton of people hate it, and I agree that it's slightly imbalanced. Probably will take it off in just a second. Otherwise, look at the pool listed in rules. We may see some new maps, depending on if Blizzard adds them into the Beta. I don't plan on using Fighting Spirit or Chupung because I don't think they have been scaled appropriately for StarCraft II.

Posted the listing; I know there are a few 'reserved' slots that will be closed tonight (so if you registered already, pretty early, there's still a decent chance for you to get in). As for backups, I'll be posting about 25 people for that tonight as well (I think). So just keep staying tuned to the thread. Sending out email notifications for this stuff just gets too taxing.
Brackets will also be posted fairly soon.
OH, and about stars.. I'll be updating those later too. I'm just realllllly busy in the 'external world' today, doing things like mowing the yard etcetera; that's why I'm being so slow at this.

If they are putting in chat channels for the 2nd phase of the beta, you may be able to use them to help organize the tournament when it is run.

Oh, and backup stuff is going to get posted sometime in the middle of Wednesday.. I got swamped with stuff to do at home tonight and wasn't able to quite finish. Same thing goes for brackets. Still waiting on a few people to reply, so we'll see who gets the last few 'reserved' spots. If your name doesn't show up immediately in the backup list, be patient. It probably will. And if it never does, well, try to sign up fast for the third Open Wolf Cup that will take place two weeks after this one. There will be many, many OWCs to join, so never feel like you 'missed a chance'.

Updated with backups; brackets should be posted tonight; it'll be pretty easy now that everything's getting finalised.
My only concern at this point is the beta schedule... Let's hope things run in our favour. If they don't, I'll have to push the tournament back two weeks, because the following weekend I'll be out of town. I could RUN the tournament, but not cast, and I don't want to really do that. So.. Let's keep our fingers crossd.

I have made a map contest and was wondering if the map that wins the contest can be in the map pool if the contest ends before your tournament? The contest has requirements and there will be a poll for people to vote on the map they want to win.

Probably not going to use it for this tournament, since I announced map pools already. However, I will allow the winning map in a future tournament if I end up liking it. I dunno, seems like you're doing a pretty good job of setting the rules for your contest, but I'll just have to wait and see. Appreciate the offer, though!

I will have a nice banner together by next week. Doing some research on what is going to look cool for this cup, and I didn't spell excepting wrong. I just used it in the wrong context.

I actually like this one much better than your last one. I really like the design; very nice. I think this could actually become the standard one (if you win; or at least, I'll play around with using it in the future even if you don't). I like how you have the '2' there. I think eventually when these start getting up to larger numbers (since I'll be doing these tournaments weekly) we'll be able to change that to roman numerals.

The winner's banner is no longer showing up where it is hosted.. So I need them to email to me. Just PM'd them.
However, the other entrant, PLxDratewka made a great banner that I plan to talk to him personally about to modify for future themed OWCs.
So.. We'll see how that goes. But for this contest, junk is the winner!

I'm not giving prize info out until probably Saturday.
And the tournament will be done entirely on Sunday. Read the tournament procedures in the OP to see exactly how it will run.

Basically, I stopped listing people after a certain point. The people listed get priority for backups. Other people can just show up as alternates and possibly can take part in the tournament as well. Read the original post for further information.
