OK first things first, it has already taken place so sorry about that!
Onto the match then. It was a series of 6 games played between Maka, everyone's favourite Korean terran, and Cool playing with a name that seems to translate as Fruit Trader. Cool also uses zerg in sc2 and in a snapshot of the Asian server stats taken yesterday he had both the highest rating (2335) and highest win percentage (72.9%, 191 wins and 71 losses) of all the top players. Ontop of that, he took 1st place in the recent PGR21 tournament so it is clear that he will prove a difficult challenge for Maka to overcome.
Without further ado then, the vods:
Game 1 - Lost Temple Game 2 - Metalopolis Game 3 - Metalopolis Game 4 - Steppes of War Game 5 - Steppes of War Game 6 - Metalopolis
Not the most varied map selection but oh well...enjoy!
EDIT - Oh yes, there's also an interesting post on their forums. I'll stick the google translated version here as I think it gives a reasonable outline of what their plans are.

I can't be sure of course but it seems unlikely they will release them. I check the site most days though so if they do appear they'll get a link in this thread.

You don't need any additional player installed as they are just flash videos I think, maybe you've got noscript or a similar extension for your browser which is blocking them from loading?

If someone could upload these to youtube it would be much appreciated. They have one of the worst players I've used and I just can't stand it.

A bit more info has been surfacing on their forum regarding the starcraft 2 world cup they have planned. It seems that the goal is to have a total of 32 players for the main event, with 8 from China, 8 from Korea, 8 from the USA and 8 from Europe (this part is unconfirmed for now, well the USA and Europe teams anyway...but it does seem that they expect to have 32 players).
Qualifying for the Chinese positions already began today with 12 players fighting it out for 3 semi-final spots. No doubt there'll be a steady stream of similar events and info throughout the week.
More interesting for now is that a list of names for the Korean squad was posted up. Freedom, Check, Maka and Cool have all received automatic invites while the remaining 4 spots will be taken by the winners of a 16 player qualification process, those involved are listed below:
cosmic, hongjinho, isskincom, yongsukchang gerrard, ssjm, zenio, dayfly thewind, spunky, hannibal, leeraeun ssks, anypro, slayersboxer, babybaby
Subs incase people don't turn up: inca, bluemassage, pelias
It'll be a pretty sick lineup.
Has anyone heard anything else regarding the event?
|
<3 maka. Thanks for the VODs for those of us without beta!! Greatly appreciated!
|
It's always nice to see organizations attempt to generate interest in SC 2 (even before the game is released!), and 17173.com is doing a great job at that with the world cup. It's unfortunate that SC 2 faces a number of issues in China due to the internet infrastructure, political situation, etc., but it's nice to see them try nonetheless.
Thanks for giving us a heads up, Bane.
|
So, watching a few of the replays and VODs from Korean and Chinese players, it seems that Zerg has taken a clear lead in Asian SC 2, while Terran is clearly behind. The most common match-up seems to be PvZ.
Edit: a typical PvZ from top platinum players in Asia - http://media.17173.com/sc2/2010-04-20/20100420201110585.shtml

Wow... every game was so exciting. having some problems viewing game 5 but rest of them were top notch. Why didn't these guys get invited to Star War?
|
Gah I hate streaming from asian websites, takes forever. =( Post if/when you get replays please!~
|
They've since hosted two more showmatches so I figured it was worth linking the vods here again for those who don't check the 17173.com site.
1. hannibal (T) vs Spunky (P) in a best of 7. hannibal had the highest rating pre-reset (2412) and can reasonably claim to be one of the top terrans on the Asian server as he has placed quite well in a number of their tournaments. Spunky is yet another of what seems like a legion of retired progamers who have resurfaced looking to make a name for themselves again in this new game and was Garimto's pick as the best sc2 protoss when asked during his interview with Artosis. I should note these were played on the 23rd of April (still patch 8) but I don't think that detracts from the games as they play well and employ a range of strategies throughout the series.
Game 1 - Metalopolis Game 2 - Blistering Sands Game 3 - Lost Temple Game 4 - Kulas Ravine Game 5 - Steppes of War Game 6 - Scrap Station Game 7 - Lost Temple
2. DayFly (T) vs Check (Z) in a best of 5. You might well have expected the races to be Orc and Night Elf...but no, we find ourselves in new and exciting times and both players are fully committed to reliving the progaming dream in sc2. Check has consistently had the most games played on the Asian server and must be close if not over the 5000 mark by now. I think he has also been a part of pretty much every tournament they've held over there to date with a string of high finishes. DayFly has been almost invisible by comparison, presumably smurfing or sticking to private games as he hasn't featured in any tournaments or ladder ranking lists, yet his play is definitely of a high calibre when judged by current standards. This series was played yesterday (today for some?) on the 26th of April so it remains perfectly relevant.
Game 1 - Incineration Zone Game 2 - Scrap Station Game 3 - Steppes of War Game 4 - Desert Oasis Game 5 - Metalopolis
Enjoy.
As for the sc2 world cup, it seems they have put a halt on the planned qualifiers for now as Blizzard have been slow in certifying it (i.e. they still haven't) and it is pointless to get too far along in the process with that uncertainty hanging around. The info posted above about the Korean team still seems to be current and I've not found anything as yet discussing the potential EU/USA teams.
More was finalized for the Chinese team however, with the following 8 players apparently receiving direct invites: Loner, E3_Super, Beckham, V.A_MTY, Newlife, W_Y_W, V.A_xiaOt and S.C_WAWP. There are then 16 players who will have to earn their place by topping the following groups:
A. SCI)_DPR , S.C_Vulture , EricPanda , Empty B. ACE , E3_FengZi , StriveMacSed , xiaozhu C. S.C_PJ , V.A_GoL , DEEP , Gale D. F91 , 小白兔 , Evil , Main
Hopefully it goes ahead since there are so many big Korean and Chinese names involved that it should blow away all of the previous tournaments in the beta.

Would love to watch these but this site is too painful to watch anything on.

It seems they can't get enough of these right now as they held yet another today on the 28th. It was intended to be Ace vs sSJM (who may well be Max as the similarly named sSKS really is TesteR), a very strong zerg player who managed to maintain a 70% win ratio right up until the last reset (with 275 wins and 117 losses and a 2247 rating). sSJM had to pull out however so Cool stepped in to take his place.
Ace (P) vs Cool (Z) in a best of 7. I think Cool needs no introduction beyond a small update to his ladder stats (pre-reset he had 233 wins, 102 losses and a 2272 rating). Ace is a Chinese protoss player who has made a pretty strong showing in SC2 so far. He dominated the Chinese qualifier for Starswar Reborn and continued to impress during the main event, with his team 3-0 down to the Koreans he went on to take them all out and seal a 4-3 victory. Can he step up again versus today's arguably stronger opponent?
Game 1 - Lost Temple Game 2 - Desert Oasis Game 3 - Metalopolis Game 4 - Kulas Ravine Game 5 - Steppes of War Game 6 - Scrap Station Game 7 - Kulas Ravine
There are some genuinely great moments in the series so it is well worth watching.
Apologies to those who can't watch these by the way, I'm not aware of anywhere else rehosting the vods sadly.

If you move the time forward about a second or so it should resume playing, I'm not sure why they stall like that occasionally.

nah it looks like the game crashed for one of the players or something, you can see the observers continuing but the action is frozen

LOL that game on metalipolis super is doing his version of flash build with protoss! creep away from his base to the other main by building cannons along the way, it was a hilarious game of cannon defense. He managed to held off 5 waves of 200/200 zerg army before he GGs

As cool as a lot of the micro seems, these players just don't play strategically up to par with EU/US players.
In other words, I'm confident they would get smashed in a trans server tourny.
I about fell asleep in most the games.

Korean protoss players seem to not know what a sentry does vs zerg. This protoss has amazing micro, but plays sc2 terribly.

Just watched some of the games Tester (top Korean Protoss) played in the recent Gosu Coaching cup (which he won without dropping a map) and he basically just manhandled some of North America's finest.

Perhaps, when the koreans play, to us, it seems like bad strategy, but they've already figured out why that strategy works and how to deal with our "counters".

i felt so disgusted while watching MAKA vs Fruit Trader.....
zerg is clearly the most overpowered race at the moment. for example, in the 2nd metalopolis game, where MAKA builds exterior baracks, i cannot believe fruit trade was able to defend it so easily without even scouting or anticipating it. And after the attack, he simply gets mutalisks and wins because marines are so weak they cannot do a thing? disgusted...
and the next game in which fruit trader rushes with fast roach and the queen. in that game, i was just like what the fuck... fruity boy should do that every single game its freaking impossible to stop.
it seemed like even though both MAKA and fruity boy are on top of their respective races, fruity boy has a much larger advatnage that he can easily take wins whenever he wants to from MAKA.

So, yet another slow update with games many have probably already watched, oh well.
1. Freedom vs Super // Freedom vs 小白兔, 6 matches in all. I've listed these together as both of his opponents are Chinese protoss players but in theory the showmatch was vs Super, billed as a revenge fight as he hoped to make up for Freedom crushing him in the semi-final of the China Hero Cup. I honestly don't know anything about either of the two Chinese players however and everyone already knows how awesome Freedom is, so vods ahoy:
Super Game 1 - Incineration Zone Game 2 - Desert Oasis Game 3 - Metalopolis Game 4 - Lost Temple
小白兔 Game 1 - Kulas Ravine Game 2 - Metalopolis - The commentators loved this one and you will too!
2. hannibal vs Gerrard in a best of 5. hannibal is a Korean terran user, already featured in an earlier showmatch. From watching his recent play I'd say he is definitely closing the skill gap that previously existed between him and Maka, coming agonizingly close to beating him in a best of 3 in the PlayXP exhibition last Friday. Gerrard is not someone I'm familiar with though (is he wearing an sc pro's uniform in his picture?). He's a zerg user who had a 40-18 record before the reset and according to the match announcement he is maintaining a ~70% win rate again so he surely has to be a decent player.
Game 1 - Kulas Ravine Game 2 - Metalopolis Game 3 - Scrap Station Game 4 - Lost Temple Game 5 - Desert Oasis - Does this match fail to play back correctly for anyone else? It's a bit of a tease not knowing how things ended.
Happy viewing!

There was an excellent Korean War3 player named Gerrard.WeRRa back in the beta... I vaguely recall him having played BW too, but I don't remember what his ID was back then.
I remember being in a bnet channel (...those were the days...) with him in the War3 beta, and these Blizzard employees were trying to get him to send in his replays to Blizzard, but he spoke no English... (his record was like 275-25 at the time). Kind of funny how I still remember that.

Well I'm glad you did remember it since that's all good to know! Looking via google he seems to have been at his peak during RoC and he took part in the proleagues that MBC and OGN ran also.
I wish they'd slow down with the matches though as yet another has appeared and it seems like one more is planned for tomorrow.
Maka vs InCa in a best of 5. These two recently clashed in the final of the PlayXP exhibition and InCa managed to take the win so Maka will no doubt be looking to try and step up a gear in his play today. They talk of InCa as being a bit of a rookie so I'm unsure whether he's previously made an impact in either sc or wc3, although [InCa] was a fairly big sc clan name wasn't it? In sc2 he is a NEX member (seemingly the big new team for aspiring sc2 pros) alongside Maka and of late his protoss play has been incredibly strong, beating Tester and then Maka in consecutive best of 3s is no mean feat after all. Anyway, regardless of how it turns out it promises to be a great matchup.
Game 1 - Incineration Zone Game 2 - Lost Temple Game 3 - Steppes of War Game 4 - Lost Temple Game 5 - Steppes of War

2nd metalopolis game... terran proxies two barracks and pumps marines, in addition to one pumping marauders and his factory with some hellions. the proxy was pretty useless as he could just have built those two rax in his base instead as he had to wait for his main army from his base to attack anyway, and rallied marine reinforcements made little difference that late into the game. if he had had a more marauder heavy army he would have walked over the zerg there and then. however, he switched to marauders a bit later and still kept building hellions and didnt see a spire, so YES, the 3-5 marines he had got raped by 4-10 mutalisks. imbalanced? i don't think so, I just think that you like to look at a game and go "Lol imbalanced cause terran lost and I play terran" instead of looking at the game in its context and see why a player *really* lost.
the "queen" rush ? terran scouted the zerg was 1 base and saw roaches, yet opted for a 2 factory build going for fast tanks. the roaches alone would have won that attack because the terran had no army to deal with the 1 base build as he was himself teching. "freaking impossible to stop" ? no, it really isn't. he would have won easily without the queen there, it only had energy to heal once, and besides the queen speed off creep was nerfed in a latest patch and these games were before that. to me, you seem like a bronze/practice league terran with no understanding of the game. look how badly maka got crushed in the last game when he tried going for mutas
