It turns out that beating (Z)Jaedong in a ZvZ series just takes a little (Z)EffOrt. Zang! In case you missed them, here are your results:

Quarterfinals - Day 2
(T)Berserker vs (P)Tempest
Game 1
+ Show Spoiler +
Last week's recommended game began with Tempest placing a pylon before scouting. Iris blocked the early scout with a barracks-first opening and depot wall but clearly any rush he'd been planning was now spoiled. With the early arrival of Tempest's probe, Iris abandonned any rush build he was planning and quickly switched to a fast expand build. Tempest built a robotic's facility in the middle of the map to ease into reaver harass later. Both players naturals completed at the same time and Tempest used that timing for a pincher attack on Iris' natural, dropping a reaver and dragoon on one side of the natural while attacking Iris' front with three dragoons. The attack was a success but thanks to his beefy SCVs and single-marine bunker, Iris was able to prevent the attack from ending the game. Still, Iris lost a large number of SCVs + mining time and was most certainly behind. In an effort to take the pressure off himself for a moment, Iris dropped two tanks above Tempest's natural. The strategy was overwhelmingly successful, not because he got many probe kills, but because Tempest used all his units to defend, and Iris lost neither the dropship nor his two tanks.

Tempest chose to rush to Arbiters and was producing his first Arbiter as his third base was warping in. This early tech decision allowed Iris to catch up a bit in macro, and since Iris already had a starport+addon, he wasn't particularly behind in tech, either. Iris' early set-back was still affecting him by the time Tempest's first Arbiter was done, however, as he was 50 supply behind at that point.

He was catching up, though, and was only 40 supply behind when Tempest executed his first recall on top of Iris' main command center. The first recall did surprisingly little damage, killing a few SCVs and a couple supply depots before Iris could clear it out, but soon after Tempest launched a second recall. With this one, Tempest destroyed Iris' starport and science facility, setting the terran's tech behind. As some form of consolation, Iris was only 30 supply behind Tempest at the end of the second recall.

Tempest followed quickly with yet another attack, this time rushing uncloaked units into Iris' front lines. This proved to be a major blunder since Iris was only 13 supply behind afterwards.

Iris chose to push toward Tempest's northern expansions immediately after Tempest's blunder, and although Iris forfieted highground to Tempest's remaining forces, his well positioned Vultures protected his tanks from Zealots while the Tanks forced Tempest's Dragoons to withdrawal. As Tanks rained down fire upon one of Tempest's Nexuses, Tempest mounted a more coordinated defense, landing a stasis on the majority of Iris' attack force. However, by this point, the two players were even in supply, and Iris' reinforcements were able to protect his stasis'd units. With little in his way, Iris began a comeback by taking out his opponent's expansions, reducing Tempest to two mining bases (with the natural very close to empty). In a last ditch effort to recapture the momentum, Tempest recalls into Iris' factories. He destroyed one factory and an armory, though it wasn't enough.

When Iris finishes usurping the northern bases and threatens Tempest's newly created expansions to the south, Tempest concedes, his speedy tech and over aggression having cost him a massive advantage and the game.
Game 2
+ Show Spoiler +
Tempest warped in at 5 o'clock and Iris at 9. Iris walled in at his ramp in preperation for a fast expansion at 11 o'clock while Tempest went 1 gate cybernetics core (at 13 supply). before expanding himself. Iris gets a dropship as soon as he possibly can and drops two Vultures into Tempest's main. Although the drop was spotted, the speedy vultures manage to kill four probes before Tempest deals with them.

Iris drops three more Vultures into Tempest's main, but Tempest has some drop play in mind as well, and Zealot bombs two of Iris' five defending tanks. Simultaneously, Tempest launches an attack into Iris' natural with eleven Dragoons, able to take out two more tanks before Iris' SCVs and bunker drive the dragoons away. Iris continued to drop vultures with less and less success while Tempest took his fourth base and started to mass units in ernest.

In an effort to slow Tempest down, Iris dropped a tank and two vultures behind Tempest's expansion at 4 o'clock and then pushed out to take out Tempest's mineral only at 3 o'clock and then set up a contain outside Tempest's natural. Tempest was able to stage a beautiful flank, though and decimates Iris' army. Tempest capitalized on his advantage by sending wave after wave of protoss units at Iris' natural and into his main, overrunning the crippled terran. Iris concedes, having invested too much of his early economy into mostly ineffective drop play.
Game 3
+ Show Spoiler +
Tempest opened with a proxy robotics facility just southwest of Iris' main on Destination. Iris scouted the proxy with a marine shortly after it completed, and opened with 1fac1port. Tempest is able to save his robotics facility momentarily, but knowing what's coming, Iris was able to place a bunker in his mineral patch and spoil the reaver harass with a wraith.

Unwilling to relinquish his lead, Iris moved out with four Tanks, destroyed Tempest's proxy pylon, and then prevented Tempest from taking an expansion. Tempest walls in his main with pylons, but this serves only to prevent his own army from establishing a presence on the map. Unable to recover, Tempest slowly loses the game, and the series. Iris moves on to the semifinals!

(Z)Jaedong vs (Z)EffOrt
Game 1
+ Show Spoiler +
Jaedong opens with a 9 pool gas-trick and EffOrt with a 12 hat, 11 pool, 10 gas. Having placed his expansion hatchery at 13 supply, Jaedong hid his first six Zerglings from EffOrt's overlord, then launches his delayed zergling attack. EffOrt is almost entirely unprepared for the assault but is able to utilize his drones to fend Jaedong off. After successfully defending, EffOrt shows no hesitation in countering Jaedong. It seemed as though Jaedong was relying on his reputation to protect him from a counter as he's woefully underprepared for it and concedes quickly.
Game 2
+ Show Spoiler +
Jaedong opens with a 12 hat and EffOrt with a 9 pool speed. EffOrt scouts Jaedong's Overlord, and immediately sends his first zerglings to Jaedong. Jaedong does what he can to defend but is simply outnumbered from the start and falls further and further behind before he finally GGs. EffOrt Advances to the semifinals by outplaying Jaedong. Wow!
Game 3
+ Show Spoiler +
Game unnecessary.

Upcoming
Semifinals - Day 1
July 19, KST 18:00
(T)Flash vs (Z)July

Mappool
Neo Medusa
Heartbreak Ridge
Outsider
Destination
Neo Medusa

I can hardly believe it, but I think July's the favorite here! Just hear me out:

1) Flash's TvZ hasn't been Flash's TvZ lately. He's dropped 5 of his last 8 in the matchup and only one of those losses was to Jaedong. Okay... sure, sure, (Z)Calm and (Z)YellOw[ArnC] have been playing some blistering ZvT lately, but (Z)Kwanro's still Kwanro and Flash lost to him twice!
2) Ignoring the MSL offline Preliminaries (just to pad my stats), July's won 7 of his last 10 ZvT's.
3) July has tons more free time to practice for GOM!
4) It's a best of five and July's a sneaky, cerebral zerg and can surprise Flash in every game of the series, winning with mindgames!
5) July will probably challenge Flash to a "friendly" wrestling match minutes before the game and "accidentally" sprain Flash's right index finger.
6) It's the month of July, people. This is happening!

Wowzers! Look at how many numbers are in that list! July's a lock to take this!
+ Show Spoiler +
... Just kidding. Flash is the favorite... Neo Medusa tends to favor the Terran side of TvZ, Destination definitely favors Terran, Heartbreak Ridge is pretty balanced leaving Outsider as the only map that innately benefits Zerg. Realistically, July will be fortunate to get to game 4 and it'll be amazing if he pushes the series to game 5... but you never know! Here's hoping that good ol' July can pull off an upset!

That match is two weeks later. I'm pretty sure they will have a write up next week about july vs flash and in that write up they will overview Effort vs. iris.

Hoping this is a great series. Flash is certainly the favorite but will be in trouble if he doesn't restrain his greed. July has improved his zvt since coming to stx, only his zvz is abysmal. If Flash showboats with a lot of cheese, mech and fast econ builds, I think July can win.

Hoping for Flash after epic series. July had lots of time just to prepare for this and Flash TvZ looked lackluster but I believe he should take the series.

July for the win! But I really want a TvZ finals, so either Effort vs Flash or July vs Iris really is fine with me. July vs Effort would be completely lopsided, so my third choice would have to be Flash vs Iris.

July got his golden mouse in the month of July, rolling over Best with the use of psychological warfare. He should do this against Flash and Flash would be so careful that he won't take the risk of 14CC.
Jaedong has to be a Bonjwa. Tired of of rooting for July.

Wat? I thought July was known for his ZvP? :o His vT is only at 53%, while his vP is close to 70%.

I think Flash will win this rather easily, even tho his TvZ has been rather shaky lately.

Earlier in his career he was more known for his zvt, dethroning oov and all. Now a days it's his zvp that has become his trademark.

July has been a great ZvT player for quite a while and Flash has been an even better TvZ player (excluding this last month's games - if its not the beginning of a huge slump), Flash is still the favorite and July winning would be an upset.

Yeah just to reiterate what the other guy said, not only was July known for his zvt when he first came out, his zvp was actually considered his weakest MU. There was an interview on tl [you can find it somewhere, maybe articles?] where he says he thinks zvt is his best and zvp is his worst. Just before or just after he defeated iloveoov.

Such a great Ro4. I'd love to see all these players win. July because he's such a great old school player still managing to put up great play. Flash because when he's on his game he's just amazing to watch. Iris also an old school player, always nice to see them do well. And Eff0rt has become one of my new favorites. It's great to see a zerg who can challenge Jaedong even though JD is my #1 favorite player.

Really hoping for July, but more likley we will see a Flash vs Effort clash, July vs Effort would be funny thought ^^

splendid writeup Tadzio, as always!

i think Flash have had enough time to train for this, as he's out from all the other leagues so maybe the GOMtitle appears a little bit more shiny to him, predicting he'll stomp July 3-0

EffOrt should win Iris quite easily so that'll make Flash vs EffOrt, which would be very nice finals indeed.. but im fine with any finals as long as it ain't ZvZ.

Effort vs Flash finals would be the most entertaining.
finals with Effort vs July would be boring
so is TvT

July vs Effort would be one sided and July never was able to show match his skills in ZvZ. July vs Iris would be a nice old school game.

Am I missing something? How could Tempest vs Berserker be a quarterfinal game and then neither of those players be in the semifinals???

If the final turns out to be July v. Effort this will be terrible. ZvZ battles just lack that epic feeling and are far too quick to create a good final. July v. Iris would be fantastic but I just don't see Berzerker getting past the might of Effort.

I hoped Iris vs Effort would be first because I'd hate to see zvz in the finals. Otherwise of course I hope for the best for a July vs Iris Final. Noone predicted those two would have a good shot to meet in a final of a big tournament.

I like all 4 players that are left in the series...

Effort v Flash would be my choice, only because I REALLY like Effort and would like to put him to the test....Just not July v Effort. Please... July's zvz... ick.
