The Avalon MSL Round of 32 Groups A-D

I've always said that the real MSL doesn't start until the Round of 16. No matter how many fancy format or name changes they have, this will always hold true. These next few weeks there's a lot of StarCraft going on: the OSL qualifiers conclude, GOM enters the Ro16, and Proleague enters its stretch run before the playoffs. The MSL's convoluted format and legions of players might be hard to follow, so check out motbob's MSL Results & Standings if you are confused.

I'll save the in depth analysis and detailed game reports for the "real" MSL, aka the Round of 16, when it will be much easier to follow and write about. Keep in mind that each Ro32 group plays its first two matches and the winners match, with the final two matches played out on a later date. For those that are unfamiliar:

1. Four players in each group, two matches (let's call them Match A and Match B).
2. Winners of Match A and Match B play each other. Let's call this Match C.
3. Winner of Match C advances to MSL Round of 16.
...
4. Losers of Match A and B play each other. Let's call this Match D.
5. Winner of Match D plays the loser of Match C. Let's call this Match E.
6. Winner of this match advances to MSL Ro16.

Right now, every group plays out Matches A, B, and C (Steps 1-3). Match D and E (Steps 4-6) are saved for a later date. So do not be scared that your favorite player lost at first, it doesn't mean he is out of the MSL. He still has a chance, it's just going to be harder for him.

By the way, there are seven CJ players qualified for the Ro32. That's right, over 20% of the players currently in the MSL are from CJ Entus. Did I just jinx them? We'll see. Before we get to the games, I want to say a few things about the MSL Intro (click to view), which has the usual closeups, special effects, and dark lighting that make the nerdiest professional StarCraft players look badass, but it also features a song that many of you probably are not familiar with:

"U + Ur Hand" by Pink

Yes that's actually how the title is spelled. No, Testie's ex-girlfriend did not write the song. It is written and sung by the American musical artist, Pink. The lyrics used in the intro are:
I'm not here for your entertainment
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
...
It's just you and your hand tonight

Ironically, every single line is bad advice. The players actually are here for our entertainment, and in a game of StarCraft, you cannot simply "stop and take a second." Here is the story behind the song's creation (taken from Wikipedia):
According to an interview in the documentary "Making of the U + Ur Hand Video", Pink always found it irritating when boys were riding on her when she is dancing in a club: "When you turn a boy down in a club you are automatically a lesbian, according to them". She heard a boy once say "Oh well, it's just me and my hand tonight" after a girl turned him down. Pink found that funny and started to write a song about it.

There's more (bold emphasis added):
The song caused controversy in the U.S. because of its allegedly "racy" references to masturbation, and consequently some radio stations refused to play it. Pink and her publicist stated that she wasn't allowed to sing "U + Ur Hand" on the U.S. television show American Idol because of such references. She was asked to change the title and lyric to "U + Ur Heart", but she reportedly said, "You want me to rewrite my song for you. For American fucking Idol? ... what does that even mean, how do you have sex with your heart?".

Where's Xellos when you need him? He'd be perfect for this intro.

(Z)Luxury > (T)Hwasin @ Heartbreak Ridge
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Luxury opens standard 3-hatch, while Hwasin opens mech FE. Luxury stays on three bases the entire game, versus two and eventually three base Terran mech. There's some harass back and forth, with Luxury losing a drones to vultures and hydras to mines while doing some damage with muta harass, but nothing huge on either side. So the Terran should really be winning here with equal supply counts and equal bases, right? Wrong. Instead, Luxury drops Hwasin's main, kills a lot of factories and depots, and just crushes Hwasin's army with mass hydra muta afterward. The game totally didn't make sense, but at this point I've stopped trying to predict how Luxury games will turn out.

(Z)EffOrt > (T)HiyA @ Carthage 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Effort sends his maphacking ninth drone out and immediately finds Hiya's proxy 8-rax, forcing a cancel, and then safely 12-hatches. Standard three hatch muta versus bio-FE ensues. Hiya tries a sunken runby that fails pretty badly, and after that is just outmatched by pure skill. Effort at all times had a larger army with faster tech, guided by superior game sense, executing several stylish hold lurkers and precise mass flanks. Swarm and lurkers arrive at Hiya's choke before Hiya could even attack past the center line of the map. Hiya just had no chance the entire game. Complete, utter domination by CJ's best Zerg. Remind you of anyone?

(Z)EffOrt > (Z)Luxury @ Outsider + Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Effort opens 9-pool against Luxury's 12-pool, failing to do much damage. Luxury has the faster second gas, but is forced to go spore-scourge because of Effort's faster spire. Efforts mutas do a good deal of drone damage, and return to his main to barely save his natural hatch from dying. Effort pressures with his superior muta count, and displays some transcendent micro against scourge, repeatedly taking out Luxury's main gas. Lux secretly expands to his back natural, but Effort senses it immediately, and eventually prevails with a much larger mutalisk flock. Excellent play from Effort despite being at a build order disadvantage.

(Z)EffOrt advances to the MSL Ro16

This group went as it should. You have two older players who are slumping (Lux and Hwasin), one ridiculously on fire young player (Effort), and one filler Terran (Hiya). Effort cruises easily, even though he was behind in the ZvZ. He was just way, way better than these other guys. I predict Hiya to come out of the loser portion of this, but we all know he probably won't make a big splash in the MSL. This season's individual leagues (both MSL and OSL) are all about how far Effort can get. Can he make the leap to the true elite, and contend with Bisu, Jaedong, and Flash? We'll see.

(P)JangBi > (P)Bisu @ Byzantium 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Bisu opens 4-gate goon all-in, and Jangbi plays right into his hands by going 1-gate expand. However, cross positions on a gigantic map force Bisu's freshly produced units to walk across all of Asia to reinforce the attack. Jangbi successfully defends, and is too far ahead for Bisu to mount a comeback. Universally stupid move by KTY to attempt this sort of thing cross positions, especially against a recently slumping Jangbi.

(P)Kal > (P)free @ Outsider
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Both players open FE at their back natural, the common thing to do on Outsider. Both players make a lot of goons and reavers. Free takes his third (front natural) and Kal attacks just as Free is coming down his ramp, crushing most of Free's army. Kal then takes a third base and rides the macro advantage to the victory. Very standard game decided by one bad tactical decision by Free.

(P)Kal > (P)JangBi @ Carthage 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Kal goes DT. JangBi goes DT. Kal makes cannons, they warp in time. JangBi does not.

(P)Kal advances to the MSL Ro16

Bisu insists on 4-gate allin despite the cross positions, and now his fans must sweat it out. When this group concludes, he'll be fighting with Free and JangBi for the final qualifier spot, and neither of those games are locks. I would not be surprised at all if Bisu is bounced out of this MSL before the Ro16. Kal played well enough to qualify, but his two wins were really just one bad decision by Free and one build order win against JangBi. PvP is a fickle and unforgiving beast, and Kal just got the better end of the stick on this particular night.

Group C
Live Report Thread

(T)Shine > (P)Stork @ Heartbreak Ridge
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Game opens standard, with Stork going goon obs expo in some order, and Shine siege expanding. Shine proxies a starport near Stork's main, and ferries four vultures in. Stork is completely unprepared, and the drop does a ton of damage, mainly because Shine also pushed out at that exact moment. Shine fake pushes Stork's third while dropping Stork's main again with vultures, again getting a ton of probe kills. This allows Shine to turtle to 200 and +3 very quickly. While Stork still has a large army off three bases supported by arbiters, Shine has the rest of the map and multiple vessels to counter. Excellent play by Shine.

(T)PianO > (Z)Kwanro @ Outsider
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
The popular ZvT build versus bio on this map is skipping lurker and going fast guards and ultras after mutas. Kwanro does this and deals marginal damage with his muta flock as he techs to hive off three gas. Piano does a good job of building a huge bio and tank army, and with wraiths as support, actually breaks eight sunkens and many guardians with his Terran ball right before ultras come out. Well timed and well executed attack by Piano.

(T)PianO > (T)Shine @ Byzantium 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Shine opens one fac expand, and Piano counters with fac-port. Piano attemts to bunker rush the CC, forcing a fight between his two vultures and five marines against Shine's two vultures, four marines, and two SCVs. Both players reinforce, and either due to good micro or pure luck, Piano comes out on top. I couldn't see because a floating rax was obscuring half the battle, but Shine was forced to pull workers. When Piano's wraiths arrived, Shine was nowhere near prepared, and tapped out soon after.

(T)PianO advances to the MSL Ro16

Piano winning was a definite upset. Stork and Kwanro were the favorites in this group, and Piano had been playing quite poorly in GOM and Proleague. Now he has qualified for his first ever major individual league (remember, Ro16 = real MSL). Kwanro and Stork, the two "better" players, are relegated to the losers match, and one of them will be sent home. As for Shine, he actually has a decent shot, he only needs to win one game and he's shown he can prepare very well for it.

Live Report Thread

(Z)ZerO > (T)sKyHigh @ Outsider
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Skyhigh 8-rax bunker rushes while Zero 12-hatches, and gets seven drones for one bunker and a few marines, which puts him firmly ahead. Instead of retreating to his main, Skyhigh instead gets greedy and attacks with seven marines, probably thinking Zero skimped on lings. But Zero had an overlord over Skyhigh's cliff and knew his marine count exactly. The seven marine attack is crushed by slow lings, and they proceed to deal a ton of damage in Skyhigh's main. This cripples Skyhigh's two-port wraith build, and when the wraiths finally arrive, Zero has hydras and lair, and his mutas seal the game. Skyhigh had this game and threw it away. Happy birthday Zero!

(Z)Calm > (T)Sea @ Byzantium 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Calm does this ingenious build where he fakes lurker all-in, and instead goes fast hive and defiler off two gas while proxying his third hatch near Sea's main. It's smart because there's no way Sea would waste scans against such a lurker fake, and thus was playing in the dark for most of the game. Sea had just produced his first wraith, clearly preparing for guardians, when Calm strolled into Sea's natural with lurkers and swarm. A very well thought out and well executed plan by Calm.

(Z)Calm > (Z)ZerO @ Carthage 3
+ Show Spoiler [VOD] +
+ Show Spoiler [Recap] +
Calm opens 9-pool against Zero's 12-pool, but instead of running in with his first lings, hides them on the map before Zero's overlord arrives. He then runs out with freshly made lings. This successfully convinces Zero that Calm went 12-pool, and Zero expands to his natural, believing Calm's ling count to be much lower than it actually is. Calm links up with his hidden lings, attacks, and easily wins the battle and the game. Awesome fakeout.

(Z)Calm advances to the MSL Ro16

Calm executed two of the most creative, well-planned builds I've ever seen. And one was in ZvZ, where he beautifully used the opponent's overlord as a source of misinformation. Whereas EffOrt dominated his group with standard management and mechanics, Calm was equally dominant with his preparation and creativity. He deserved this qualification 100%. Let's hope his Round of 16 builds are as awesome as these were. As for the others in this group, their road is quite tough. None of these three players are pushovers, and all of them have the potential to go far in the MSL.

Next Week:

Group E
(T)NaDa < Byzantium 3 > (T)Iris
(P)Horang2 < Carthage 3 > (T)UpMaGiC
Winner < Heartbreak Ridge > Winner

Two cheesers, a legend, and a veteran berserker. I don't see Nada getting past Iris, but other than that, it's impossible to say because Up and Horang are so unpredictable. I'd really like to see Iris or Nada make it, even though both seem past their prime. One last deep MSL run? We can only hope.

Group F
(T)Leta < Carthage 3 > (T)fantasy
(Z)Jaedong < Heartbreak Ridge > (P)Movie
Winner < Outsider > Winner

The group of death. Poor fantasy. Two straight OSL losses, and now he's in this ridiculous MSL group. Leta and Jaedong are among the best in TvT and ZvT, so they are the definite favorites here. Movie has shown promise, but I fear he's way out of his depth. The most likely winner's match will be between Leta against Jaedong, and we'll see if Leta has something different than his standard wriath-into-bio TvZ.

Group G
(Z)sAviOr < Heartbreak Ridge > (T)Canata
(T)Flash < Outsider > (T)go.go
Winner < Byzantium 3 > Winner

Everyone wants to see Flash face off against Savior in the winner's match, and while Flash should easily dispose of go.go, Canata is exactly the type of standard macro Terran that Savior has historically had problems with. Recently, Savior hasn't been put in CJ's PL lineup that often. I'm afraid that Flash-Canata is more likely than Flash-Savior. Can you imagine the gallons of fanboy tears that will be shed (mine included) if Canata somehow qualifies? TvT is his best matchup...

Group H
(T)fOrGG < Outsider > (P)Much
(T)firebathero < Byzantium 3 > (P)Pure
Winners < Carthage 3 > Winner

Hopefully we'll get to see Much versus firebathero in the winner's match. Will there be more pylon hearts? fOrGG has been sucking badly ever since he moved to KTF, let's see if he can turn it around.

The Avalon MSL's first four groups are done, and we have our first four Round of 16 players: Effort, Kal, Piano, and Calm.

Thought I'd mention this because it's a bit misleading - the groups are like halfway done. I don't know how else you could phrase it, but it may save some people who don't know the new format from asking questions.

one ridiculously on young fire player

Um, you might want to restate that. Unless Effort is actually on young flames or something.
