Match 1: STX 1 - 0 SKT

By: kollin

INnovation's Ace Match win gives STX Soul 1 - 0 lead against SK Telecom T1

In an incredibly close match, STX took game one of their series against SK Telecom T1 by a score of 4 - 3. SKT T1. The result easily could have gone the other way, with SKT coming close to closing it out 4 - 2 in the sixth set. However, Bisu's risky fast expansion was countered, and the series went to a fateful ace match. There were no jitters in the clutch for INnovation, as he took out opposing ace Fantasy to take the match for his team.

Game one: (T)INnoVation vs. Best

Not surprisingly, the underdog Best picked the single cheese that would work against Innovation's slightly too greedy reaper opener, using a proxy-gateway to take an early advantage. While many players who open reaper expand scout with an SCV too, Innovation decided against it and this lack of early information cost him dearly. Best did enough damage that Innovation had no chance of catching up, and while the STX ace did attempt to make his way back in with mine and bio drops, it was not enough. Best's follow-up two base colossus HT push crushed through Innovation's meager army and took the game. Almost everybody predicted an easy win for Innovation, however SKT's preparation was too good and Best won out in the end.

Game two: (P)Dear vs. (P)Rain

STX were quick to strike back with a cheesy play of their own, as Dear went for a DT build against Rain's fast expand. Dear failed to do the damage that Best inflicted in the previous game and Rain's immortal gateway counter attack came quickly and brutally. Despite Rain having a far superior army, by some miracle Dear pulled off a successful defence and found himself with a comfortable lead. This lead was increased when Rain tried to end the game before it got late with a two base immortal archon push. Dear once again mustered the forces to stave off Rain's army, and was left with a base up on his opponent and with a considerable army lead. From there Rain just had to go through his death animation of a few minutes, as before Dear finally broke through at Rain's third and forced the GG.

Game three: (P)Mini vs. (P)PartinG

This game was a slightly more old school PvP, as both players dueled each other off one base with almost purely gateway units. While neither player got an economic advantage, Mini was far more aggressive than Parting and that paid off, as he was eventually able to contain Parting on one base while taking his own natural. Throughout the game Parting put on a sterling display of simultaneously harassing while defending with the bare minimum of units required, but despite some truly stellar warp prism micro not seen since the days of NEXSickness, it was not enough. Parting eventually had to march down to his ramp to the sound of forcefields sealing his army in place, and he GG'd out after his units were left lying broken in his main.

Game four: (T)FanTaSy vs. (P)Classic

Fantasy showed off an interesting two base tank push in this TvP, similar to the build that Mvp pulled out last season in WCS Europe to overcome SaSe. Classic seemed fairly hapless against it with his expand into oracle build, as the clever positioning of low-ground tanks on Akilon Flats prevented mining at his natural. Classic made some odd decisions as well, losing several armies for seemingly no reason. While the lack of immortals due to his stargate build can be explain his loss to some degree, Classic's out of character bad decisions were also responsible for a large part of it.

Game five: (Z)hyvaa vs. (Z)soO

Soo vs. hyvaa was a fairly typical ZvZ, as hyvaa opted for a two base roach bane bust and Soo's solid defence shut it down with almost zero economic damage. From there Soo used his drone advantage to pump significantly more roaches than hyvaa and the SKT Zerg GG'd out as soon as he saw how vastly outnumbered he was.

Game six(P)Bisu vs, (P)Trap

While Bisu has an unfairly bad reputation in StarCraft II, there's no denying he messed up this chance to close out the series for SKT. Just one game away from ending the series 4 - 2, and one game away from preventing the best player in the world INnoVation from getting a second chance, Bisu took a big chance with a nexus first build.

As it turned out, Trap scouted Bisu going nexus first, while Trap himself wasn't going nexus first. The outcome after that was quite... predictable. Trap built two more gateways, marched into Bisu's base, and camped every single stalker that popped from Bisu's gateways (not even warp gates). All the while he picked off probes with a casualness that suggested he was already wondering what kind of ice cream to get after the match. Left without an economy, Bisu GG'd out and sent the series to an ace match.

Ace Match: (T)FanTaSy vs. (T)INnoVation

Bisu's folly undid Best's good work, and gave INnoVation a chance at redemption in a deciding ace match. Fantasy was sent out instead of Rain for SKT, which wasn't too surprising considering that Newkirk is a Terran favoured map in PL. As everyone expected, Innovation was STX's choice, and as always, he delivered. Fantasy chose to proxy a factory and starport, and go for a widow mine drop. Innovation knew exactly what was up, and blew the medivac out of the sky with a well placed widow mine before it had the chance to drop anything. Innovation's cloak banshee follow-up was fairly effective, especially considering the lowered cost of cloak.

Fantasy also went for a slightly delayed cloak banshee, however lost all his banshees to either a viking-raven hit squad, or the same heroic mine that had already killed a medivac. Innovation was ahead in almost every single way, and moved out to contain Fantasy on one base. He succeeded in doing so, and Fantasy was forced to sit still for a few minutes while Innovation only increased his lead further and further. While Fantasy eventually managed to break out from the contain, another wave of units from Innovation arrived and demolished what remained of Fantasy's army, winning the game and giving STX a 1 - 0 series lead.

ACE < Neo Planet S > ACE

While STX Soul managed to eke out a win over SK Telecom T1 last night by a 4 - 3 scoreline, that doesn’t mean SKT has any reason to despair. It was a hard fought match, and SKT will have left thinking they could have won if just a few things had gone their way. Be it either cockiness or confidence, STX lined up three of their same players on the exact same maps as yesterday. What that tells us is that they either have very specific builds that they’ve worked on for a few weeks, or that they think the benefits of focused practice outweigh being a little predictable. Whatever the case, let’s take a look at the matches!

(P)STX_Dear vs. (P)SKT_PartinG

There are plenty of Dear doubters around, and many were shocked that he managed to best Rain in a PvP last night. Hopefully, that result has made everyone realize Dear is the real deal, and a worthy second banana on a championship contender.

However, now that he’s shown his strength in the match up, can he continue with this momentum and beat yet another SKT Protoss down? While Dear has been soaring high, PartinG is no doubt down in the dumps after his embarrassing loss to Mini. Though Dear is a considerably better player than Mini, PartinG can still beat him, as long as he maintains a cool head and sound mind, he can start off the second day with a win for his team.

(Z)STX_hyvaa vs. (Z)SKT_soO

In our first rematch of the night, hyvaa and SoO go head to head one more time on Fighting Spirit. In typical hyvaa fashion, he attempted to all in SoO yesterday and thankfully cooler heads prevailed, as SoO managed to deflect it with good queen and roach positioning. Though one could expect hyvaa to mix it up and perhaps throw a curveball by playing exceptionally greedy, you shouldn’t get your hopes up. This ZvZ should be filled with hyper aggression and end in less than 10 minutes.

(T)STX_INnoVation vs. (P)SKT_Bisu

Interestingly enough, we have a loser vs. loser match for our third game, with both Innovation and Bisu losing to their respective Protoss opponents in the first match. However, while Innovation lost to a cheese, Bisu lost because of his extreme greediness. This is important to note because it could suggest that Bisu was worried that he couldn’t contest Trap in a normal game and had to take a risk, albeit a macro-centric one. Up against a titan like Innovation, how will Bisu react? We already know that he’s had trouble adjusting to Starcraft 2 and he’s admitted himself that he gets nervous and knows he isn’t up to par with his Brood War performance. Bisu will have to perform magic if he wants to pull this rabbit out of a hat and give SKT a win.

(P)STX_Trap vs. (P)SKT_Rain

Last night, Trap managed to best Bisu on Whirlwind, punishing the early nexus with fast attacks and bringing it to an ace match. With Trap being put out on Whirlwind again, this time up against a more formidable opponent, he may have a tougher time getting a win for his team. However, Rain is now up to a 3 game losing streak solely off his PvP, which spells trouble for him heading into his next PvP right after a tough loss to Dear. If Rain was up against a player like Classic I may have given the edge to STX, but he managed to luck out on the draw and got one of the more manageable PvP players on STX in Trap. This should allow him to play conservatively and rely on his superior mechanics and decision making to win.

(P)STX_Mini vs. (P)SKT_BeSt

Our 5th game of the day, both of these players were the underdogs in their matches last night and both came out victorious. Mini took out PartinG in an action packed early-game PvP, and BeSt defeated Innovation on the back of a proxy gate build. Mini gets the edge in this match because it will be on Naro Station, the exact map where he beat PartinG on yesterday. That means Mini will have had a lot of practice for PvP on this specific map, whereas BeSt will have spent most of his time practicing for his PvT against INnovation. However, this game is still unpredictable, and BeSt already defies the odds yesterday. Another unexpected contribution from the SKT captain will keep them in the running against a strong STX team.

(P)STX_Classic vs. (T)SKT_FanTaSy

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, especially when I’ve switched races, I should be ashamed. What was a humorous game on Arkanoid has now quickly escalated into a bubbling rivalry, as Classic has once again been given a chance to get revenge for his losses against Fantasy. While Fantasy inadvertently lost the ace match for SKT yesterday, his game against Classic was admirable, and showed that he didn’t take his opponent lightly. Due to Classic’s uncharacteristically bad decision making, the series ended with the SKT Terran taking the win. With a second chance to right his wrongs, will Classic be able to finally conquer his fears? Or will Fantasy prove that he is superior, no matter what race his opponent is?

ACE: (T)STX_INnoVation vs. (P)SKT_Rain

We are here once more, with yet another ace match prediction. While we didn’t get Innovation vs. Rain last night, there were reasons for why Fantasy was a solid pick -- they mainly had to do with the map Newkirk Redevelopment Precinct and how poor it is for Protoss. However, Fantasy ended up losing anyway, which leaves SKT to ponder their course of action tonight. The map for the ace match is Neo Planet S, one of Rain’s best maps in regards to his PvT, and it was on this map that Rain defended Flash’s timing attack perfectly and dismantled the KT Terran piece by piece. We said that Innovation vs. Rain was inevitable, and if it comes to an ace, this match-up is practically guaranteed.

Predictions
Dear < Akilon Wastes > PartinG
hyvaa < New Fighting Spirit > SoO
Innovation < Bel’Shir Vestige > Bisu
Trap < Whirlwind > Rain
Mini < Naro Station SE > BeSt
Classic < Newkirk Precinct > FanTaSy
ACE: Innovation < Neo Planet S > Rain

STX Soul defeats SK Telecom T1 by a 2- 0 series score and advances to the semi-finals.

Completely agree except I think TL giving Rain too much credit for his overall skill, mean while imma jump a bandwagon and say Best can pull the win, techinally both victories were flukes (vs INnoVation and PartinG)
of course the match to really look forward to is INnoVation v Rain Ace Match, that should be fun

Should read that the STX zerg GG'd out not the SKT zerg.

The current OSL defending champion, and a guy who will take a lower hand on overall builds and macro simply because he can outplay nearly anyone as long as he doesn't die to all-ins, cannot be given too much credit for overall skill. The man is a beast.

Because that was an expansion and about a year ago. His PvT is widely recognized to be his worst match up right now.

HA!

Today doesn't even look all that different. I mostly agree with the prediction, maybe moving a few wins around, but ultimately I think this boils down to super ace Bogus coming out and winning it again for STX 4-3.

Watch the game versus Flash from the last GSL, you'll probably find yourself disagreeing.
