Flash may be the god of Brood War, and Azubu.Symbol may be the god of Nydus Worms, but unfortunately for them STX_INnoVation is an atheist. With a 2-1 victory over the Ultimate Weapon already in the bag, the STX Terran moved on to take a convincing 4 - 2 semi-final victory over last season's runner-up, utterly decimating Symbol in macro games and only dropping games when his opponent successfully killed him before he could get his economy going.
For all his reputation of being a cheesy, Kwanro-style player since the release of HotS, Symbol did try to go for straight-up macro play in game 1 on Atlas, but he was run over as Innovation went up to his comfortable three bases and into his favored biomine-style, which tore Symbol apart despite his best efforts to minimize mine damage. Innovation's over-whelming, Life-killing, Leenock-owning aggression eventually forced a punch-drunk Symbol to tap out.
In a twist of fate, the cheeser ended up being the cheesed in game two as Innovation deviated from his usual formula of 1) Get many bases 2) Get marines and mines 3) Kill Zerg, to throw down a proxy 2rax. This ended up countering Symbol's own early-pool cheese perfectly, and Innovation was able to kill Symbol before he knew what hit him
A taste of his own medicine.
Finding his protegé down 0-2, the spirit of the great Kwanro showed up to show Symbol the way, forcing the AZUBU Zerg to go for a mass roach drop build, with a nydus worm added in for good measure. But you could say that Innovation has a nose for nydus worms, and he was well-prepared when roaches, lings and queens began popping up inside his main. Without ever really looking in danger, Innovation's medivac-supported bio slaughtered the zerg forces to force a five-minute death animation for the Zerg.
The fanciest nydus all-in we've seen.
Down 0-3, with nothing to lose, Symbol instead decided to call upon the spirit upon another Zerg. This time, Life's ghost descended upon Symbol as he decided to abandon roaches, nydus worms and even lair tech altogether as he went for an old-fashioned but highly effective baneling bust. Innovation had gone for another quick CC, and didn't seem very interested in building units. For once, it came back to bite him as Symbol's banelings exploded all his SCVs faster than Innovation could blink.
With the all-in momentum in his favor, Symbol went for yet more early aggression in the next game as he ran down Innovation's front with roaches, lings and banelings while Innovation refused to build enough bunkers after a critical misread on Symbol's intent. Overrun by units and with no real infrastructure or economy left, the STX Terran was forced to tap out for the second game in a row, much to Tasteless and Artosis's dismay.
However, there would be no come-back for Symbol as Innovation had an epiphany in game six. Innovation finally realized that Symbol kind of likes using roaches and banelings (shocking, we know), and in response built the half-forgotten, largely abandoned unit that was the backbone of Terrans throughout WoL: the siege tank. And he didn't just build one, but several. Having realized that a single bunker and a few marauders wouldn't cut it, Innovation placed siege tanks in crucial spots where they were allowed free reign when the roach/bane attack inevitably came. Inadequately prepared for the onslaught of heavy splash damage, Symbol watched his banelings disintegrate and saw the 'oomph' go out of his attack, He was given no choice but to surrender when Innovation's superior economy produced the units that kicked down his front door mere minutes later, securing the STX SouL Terran the spot in the finals opposite of Woongjin Stars' Soulkey. That guarantees a trophy for either of the tormented teams STX or Woongjin, their first in nearly six years.
Defense wins championships?
In review, Symbol did everything he could to win in this series, but it wasn't enough. Innovation has shown over the course of this GSL season that his standard, straight-up macro play is almost unbeatable as he proceeds to roll over every opponent who allows him to get away with his Flash-level greed. The AZUBU Zerg ventured into macro territory in the first game, but quickly switched to doing what he did best and managed to take more games off Innovation than anyone (including GSL champions) else this season. But with more experience against well-executed all-ins, Innovation should be well-prepared going into his first finals against Soulkey. He saw almost every variation of roach/bane all-ins in existence against Symbol, and he should have no trouble holding more of them if that is what Soulkey decides to go for. Then again, Soulkey has defeated Innovation in a macro game in Proleague, so he may be confident enough to make that his main strategy in a best of seven series.
You can find the vods on http://www.gomtv.net/2013wcs1/vod/80093 , however it requires a subscription package, either from GOMTV.net or the Twitch channel, both which cost 20$ USD per month... very much so worth it though, especially if you are too busy watching live and have stuff preventing you from watching it, school ie...
also I'm European so I get the luxury of watching GSL on tuesdays and thursdays at 11 AM usually. however I am one of the lucky few due to scheduling ( no class until 14:00 at Tuesdays, and no class at all during Thursdays ).
Innovation could be the next bonjwa, if he wins GSL and the season finals...he will be in a nice path for it. If only he would participate in non-korean tournaments other than MLG...but i'm not sure Kespa would let him.
that was a brutal match for symbol, but as zealously stated he did everything he could to have the best chance at taking it. i really didn't think symbol would take more that 1 game of this terran overlord

Is Innovation the next Zerg bonjwa?!?!?111?!!1?1
This series was crazy, cannot believe how good Innovation is sometimes T.T
good series. 3:2 after beeing down 3 games is kind of an achievment against innovation these days. Game 6 was so good if you just look at the defensive position that innovation set up. his tank positioning was brilliant. Good luck against soulkey, he made it to the finals so he wants to win nomatter what. btw TvZ Final, hell yeah !
What was worth mentioning is the medics scout in the final game : using the boost to scout early, using the boost again to scout the whole base without dying, seeing the roach warren and baneling nest (which were hidden on a corner). Free scout at 7min into the game where a 300 min scan wouldnt spot the aggression coming. I feel like scans are only used to remove creep tumors in this MU.
and the prophecy has been fulfilled. SK versus Bogus in the final. I wouldn't have it any other way really.

Honestly though, won't be watching this. Innovation will crush some more face I'm sure though.
A lot of you seem to forget that SK actually has a very decent record against Mr. Bogus. It should be as close as the Symbol series. Both are pretty good Zergs. SK hasn't shown us everything yet.

Honestly, do what ever you like. But I think most people bet on the wrong horse. Innovation rides momentum and got incredibly lucky in some of his recent games, especially vs Flash.
Soulkey however, might be the closest to a perfect player since savior.

There are regular phases where 1 person seems invincible (Mkp, Taeja, Life, Rain kind of, etc). I don't think Innovation will stay this dominant for an extended period of time (although I do agree it would be awesome). Now, he did made GSL ro4, ro8, and now the finals, so we'll see how he keeps up.

That actually works really well; it's reflective of his cool/scientific approach to the game. He's like a scientist dissecting frogs reaalllyyy really fast.
Also, considering his preferred style, The Biologist could work as well.
It will be a good finals I think these are the two best players or at least pretty close to it. Soulkey has a decent chance to win I dont think its a huge long shot like many people seem to think. Soulkey knows how to prepare for this and has a lot of very good teammates to help him prepare. If any zerg can beat innovation in a macro game I think soulkey can.

AAAAAND REALLY? WOuld you have rather watched another ZvZ Final?
I wanted sOs to win. Hasn't been a Protoss in a final since that PvP final. I wouldn't have watched either to be honest.
Also you forget, Flash is a Terran. Innovation has looked almost human against Terran. But Innovation was pretty much rolled every Zerg he's played this season and now he has experienced basically every good Zerg all-in. Soulkey MIGHT win a game. MIGHT.
I think the series will be close. I think Soulkey might be one of the only zergs than can stop innovation's 3 base pushes, with his good micro. BUT I think Innovation will break him down eventually in the series. Bogus is stone cold.
I think Innovation, Soulkey and Flash are the only three players for me that still warrant an almost magical belief in their abilities. sOs had disappointing play in high-profile matches, Parting never quite convinces me he is on the same level as the best of the best, Life and Roro have both faltered lately.

ST.Life skill is over bogus+soulkey together . he just need a couple more years . now that esf have the future . keep hyping your elephants. they will all enter the slaughterhouse soon enough .
Innovation has had an amazing run so far. He's simply beaten the best of the best: Life, Flash, Rain, SymboL, RorO. All of them manhandled, especially the Z. I don't think I've seen a GSL run this impressive in a long time, if ever.
Soulkey on the other hand had his best foes as sOs and PartinG, both which were extremely close series. Lost against Flash, beat Maru 2-1 twice and also Yoda and Flying 2-0. Those are nowhere near as strong as Innovation's foes, though.
The AZUBU Zerg ventured into macro territory in the first game, but quickly switched to doing what he did best and managed to take more games off Innovation than anyone (including GSL champions) else this season.
Except for Rain who also took two games off Innovation. Rain beat Innovation 2-1 in the Ro32 group. Innovation actually lost the first Bo3 he played this season :p
But Innovation did get revenge by beating Rain 2-0 in the deciding match of the group.
Come on people! Innovation is not unbeatable. He went 2-2 with Rain, Soulkey beat him, he's 3-5 vs Flash etc. He was lucky Flash went for a stupid mech build. It's stupid to proclaim him as bonjwa. He needs at least 5 GSLs and years of play at high level to say he is a bonjwa. I still don't understand why Life played macro games against him..

That's interesting. Has any past winner or finalist beaten both finalists of the previous season before?
Also, interesting that Innovation has won against all races - and not only that, but also against players who are in the Top 5 of their race - en route to the finals. If he does win the finals, it would be one of the best tourney runs in GSL/WCS.

You mean WCS-KRs? I think 5 is a bit too much. Also the number is not as relevant as result in a row. If he wins all WCS-KR (GSL, OSL, GSL) then I guess Bonjwahood is around the corner, especially if he will add WCS-WC trophy to the list.
Then again - maybe even that won't be enough.
And he isn't at the moment champion of anything. Jumping into Bonjwa wagon at this moment is weird.
Can't believe a player like Symbol needed to play these two won games like he did. This Terran is almost unstoppable when it comes to later stage of the game.
That game 1 looked really scary, like really scary. There is a reason that symbol actually srsly did only cheese I think, he just got obliterated in game 1.
With innovation having so much momentum I'd definitely wonder if soulkey has a chance, but soulkey is a really good zerg. I'd go with 4-3 innovation (soulkey getting 1 macro game win and 2 cheese wins).
Innovation's tank placement in that last game was just so incredible. Sucha good player... Soulkey will definitily be a worthy adversary though... can't. fucking. WAIT!
I didn't know that was against bogus (assuming its the game I'm thinking about, briefly looking at it seems so where soulkey presses the w key to victory).
Bogus always was the terran I felt terran users could sympathize with; while flash/fantasy were too gosu and doing things you'd never be able to do in their respective decision making/risk takintg vs harrassment--and leta doing offshoot styles that were different from other terrans-- bogus (and sea) always were the just general solid players who kept getting cheesed by protosses, stuck unable to kill a zerg because of 1 swarm, etc etc. All the things that frustrates terrans to no end and, when playing the game, feels like complete and utter bullshit
I think game 1 is gonna be absolutely crucial. If it so happens that SK wins game one in macro (which is definitely not impossible), it would be a game changer. It would give SK the ability to dictate the pace of the following games/ mindgames and bogus would have to reconsider his go to 3 base flash- level greed. If bogus wins macro, we may see a repeat of symbol but (still) with more macro connotations. I think that the importance of who takes the first win in macro game is why we are likely to see some cheese in g1. This finals is far from predetermined, and if there is anyone in the world who could win zvt against bogus in a week, its only SK.
I was so excited to get his autograph at MLG Dallas. That ONE mistake against Flash where he walked his army into a huge tank line and lost kept him from winning that tournament I think. I know he is going to win this season, it's like the one liquidbet that I know I'll get right haha.
