Stephano Wins WCS Europe
Tournament Recap

Best Games & VODs
A quick list of the most entertaining games

Players, brackets, and schedules on Liquipedia

To the Bank, and Onward

(Z)EG.Stephano.RC was already widely regarded as the best player in Europe, and now he has Blizzard's official seal of approval. Dropping just one series in the entire tournament, Stephano came out in first place at the Blizzard World Championship Series European Final. In the end, it came down to a close series against Spain's (Z)K3ǂVortiX, but having the advantage of coming through the winners bracket, Stephano was able to absorb an initial 1 – 2 loss in the grand finals and clinch the championship by taking the final set 2 – 0.

No one would have blamed Stephano if he had come in less than 100%. He had secured a lucrative financial future after signing with Evil Geniuses earlier this month, and he had already confirmed a spot at the WCS World Finals by winning the WCS France championship. On top of that, he wasn't in the best physical condition, having arrived at the tournament just hours before opening on Saturday after an unfortunate flight delay. It seemed like a lackluster performance like his tie-12th finish at MLG Raleigh could be a possibility. Instead, it was 'to the bank' yet again, as he took home $24,000 first prize.

WCS Europe Final Standings
Top seven qualified for WCS World Finals

1st: fr (Z)EG.Stephano.RC*
2nd: es (Z)K3ǂVortiX
3rd: es (T)K3ǂLucifroN
4th: [image loading](Z)FXOLoWeLy
5-6th: dk (P)FXOBabyKnight
5-6th: nl (P)Grubby
7th: [image loading] (Z)AcerNerchio**

*Already qualified through WCS France.
**: Won 7th-8th playoff against Happy.
***: TitaN and Socke also qualified for WCS World Finals as national champions of Russia and Germany.
That's not to say Stephano walked over the competition, even though he was confident enough to declare the tournament over when he won the winners bracket on the first day. He was given stiff competition by (Z)K3ǂVortiX and (T)K3ǂLucifroN, the brothers from Spain – incidentally the the 2nd and 3rd place finishers at the tournament. Stephano barely escaped with a win against Lucifron in the winners semi-final on day one, while VortiX was the only player to take a series against Stephano in the entire tournament. Even so, after seeing Stephano's incredible tournament record over the last year, there was a sense of inevitability when he celebrated on center stage to close the show. With the World Championship coming in mid-November, don't count out more celebrations for Stephano before then.

The brothers Durán

The other huge story from WCS Europe were the breakout performances from the brothers from Spain, (T)K3ǂLucifroN and (Z)K3ǂVortiX. Though they had long been recognized by their peers and close followers of the European scene as skillful players, they lacked the results at major tournaments to earn them mainstream validation (even Vortix's recent top four finish at IEM Cologne went surprisingly unnoticed). With 2nd and 3rd place finishes at WCS Europe, they have been thrust into the spotlight.

VortiX took the runner-up spot on the back of solid Zerg vs. Zerg ability and skillful management of his hive army. Defeating national champions like Bly and BabyKnight during his run, Vortix ended being stopped by Stephano, and Stephano only.

"Well, since I played Orc vs. his Undead in War III, can I really get angry if he abuses GG lords?"
*Not an actual quote.
Playing mostly ZvZ in the tournament, VortiX had few opportunities to show his stylish, unpredictable attacks at the lair phase of the game. That contrasted heavily with his brother Lucifron, who commanded the audience's attention by showing entertaining TvZ mech play in several games. By mixing in a healthy number of banshees into a normal mech style and showing a chilling fixation on killing drones, Lucifron came out of the tournament looking like a European version of multiple GSL champion (T)LG-IM_Mvp. Lucifron combined with Stephano to produce one of the game-of-the-tournament candidates, a jaw-dropper on Cloud Kingdom that saw the two players stay neck and neck until Stephano triumphed in the final confrontation of the game (see best games below).

Though Vortix was upstaged by his brother at WCS Europe – in spite of his higher finish and head to head victory – he may get the last laugh come the World Championship in November. With LucifroN being known to only play Starcraft II full-time during breaks from university, VortiX will have a chance to prove without a doubt that he is the better Durán.

Hidden depths

It wasn't just the Karont3 brothers who demonstrated the depth of Europe. (Z)FXOLoWeLy, (P)FXOBabyKnight, and (T)Empire|Happy – other skilled players without major tournament results – also made a huge impact on the tournament, defeating many more well-known opponents to finish in the top eight.

Lowely should consider marking his jersey #23.
Lowely in particular had an impressive run, defeating JonnyREcco, ThorZaIN, SortOf, BabyKnight and Happy to finish in fourth place of the tournament (he would lose to Lucifron in the losers final). BabyKnight had a strong run as well, going through Seiplo, White-Ra, and Ret to tie for sixth place. Both the Belarusian (technically, he won the combined European Nationals) and Danish national champions were able to book flights to the world finals with their great showings.

Russia's Happy had a great run through the losers bracket after a round one loss to Lucifron, going through three national champions in (Z)WW.Ziktomini, (Z)RoX.KIS.Titan and (P)aTn.Socke to reach the final eight before losing to Lowely. With only up to seventh place winning spots in the World Finals, he was forced to play yet another national champion in (Z)Nerchio in a tie-break match for 7th/8th place. Unfortunately for Happy, his run ended there, with a heartbreaking loss to Nerchio in an off-air game.

Grubby pushing the line

Having shown huge improvement since first starting his StarCraft II career, fan-favorite and WarCraft III legend (P)Grubby had been stuck on the border between 'good' and 'really good' for the few months leading up to the tournament. Like some of his much lesser known peers mentioned above, Grubby used WCS Europe to make his case that he belongs in the top tier.

Taking a tough loss to (Z)VPBenQ.sLivko in the first round of the tournament, Grubby fought his way up through five rounds in the losers bracket to take a tie-sixth place finish and a spot in the world finals. Grubby had one of the most tumultuous runs in the tournament, and was on the verge of elimination several times. In losers round three, Grubby had a huge scare against Italy's (T)TRI.StarEagle, losing multiple nexuses against his opponent's relentless drops. Down over seventy supply in game three, Grubby needed a perfect engagement to win – one which StarEagle miraculously decided to offer Grubby as he walked through an endless shower of psi storms.

It only got more difficult for Grubby as he fought (Z)Liquid`Ret and (Z)Acer.Nerchio in the next rounds, but he pulled through by the skin of teeth. Despite being massively outgunned by dozens of Ret's brood lords, Grubby managed to best his countryman by destroying all his buildings, while against Nerchio, he very narrowly won in a game where both players were reduced to long-distance mining only.

Grubby defeats Nerchio by a margin of 3 stalkers and an immortal, literally.
Oh, and with a two base all-in on Ohana.

Favorites fall

With the less established European Stars taking the coveted world finals spots, that meant many of the favorites were forced to go home without realizing their dreams. Most notably, the host country of Sweden failed to have any of their three representatives reach the top even, with (T)EG.ThorZaIN.RC, (Z)WW.SortOf, and (P)Ai.Seiplo all being eliminated by the top twelve. WCS Sweden runner-up SortOf went the furthest by reaching the final twelve, but was eliminated by Lowely 1 – 2 in a match with a top eight finish on the line.

Ret and (P)mouz.MaNa also fell from the competition, failing to live up to their reputations in the past year of being some of the best Europeans around. German and Russian national champions Socke and TitaN were also eliminated early, but it was less of a surprise as they had already clinched World Championship spots due to being national champions (the national champions of countries with sufficiently large StarCraft II playing populations were awarded direct seeds) and had less on the line. Popular players like (P)Tt.White-Ra, and (T)EG.DeMusliM fell as well, though they were not considered favorites heading into the tournaments.

Looking ahead: World Finals

Looking ahead to the world finals, European fans have reason to be cautiously optimistic. Seven of the ten South Korean players at WCS Asia (a maximum of seven Koreans might qualify for WCS worlds) are Protoss - and Stephano might be the best ZvP player in the world. In addition, European Protosses having shown in the past that they're completely capable of gambling with Koreans in the notoriously volatile PvP match-up. However, the Europeans will have to look out for the stage-shy Curious and impressive-but-shrouded KeSPA Zerg RorO, who could be the surprise players of the tournament. Of course, other national champions such as Taiwan's Sen and Canada's Scarlett should not be overlooked either.

We weren't able to catch all of the games in detail (especially on day one, when there were eight matches going on at once), but here's a quick and dirty list of some of the most entertaining games of the tournament. Feel free to recommend any great games you think went unnoticed!

From the point of view of someone being there live, Grubby vs Nerchio and Stephano vs Lucifron were by faaar the best series. There was like this wave going through the crowd, along with this sickest buildup of tension, all released upon the final moments. Game 2 between Grubby and Nerchio was definitely the game of the tournament though, I kinda jumped up and screamed at the end of that lol.

Vortix vs Lucifron was also sick simply because it was brother vs brother, but the first game especially had a truly bizarre ending that I found very interesting.
Can't say anything about the off-stream games as I was in the crowd though.

Was a great tournament overall though, sick production, really enjoyed it ^^

Great tournament with wonderful production, I'm excited for the World Finals! HYPED!
Curious that we spend more time congratulating people who have succeeded than encouraging people who have not. 파이팅! ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ"

First tournament for a very long time where I was screaming in front of my monitor. Grubby vs Nerchio was just nervwrecking
The only sad thing is the lack of terrans in China, but well you can´t have it all
..Dropping just one series in the entire tournament..
Well, if he had dropped 2 series, he would have been out. xD

Yeah you need that game on Cloud Kingdom where Stephano does a perfect 4 pronged attack.

Edit : Meant to say the first game between Vortix and Stephano*

To add up on the great games (Stephano vs Lucifron was NUTS) the atmosphere that came accross was incredible!
Great work Dreamhack and Blizzard, and Stephano of course!

Thx for the nice recap, even though and dont really agree with the Grubby point. In my opinion he should be considered "really good" for a while now, being amongst the best foreigners at MLG's Arenas and such.

To the EG Flight thing - I know that Stephano and DeMuslim were on the same flight and the lagguage problems, was Thorzain effected aswell?! I thought he played below his level and that would be a satisfieing explanantion!

best games and vods: artosis said that stephano vortix first game in grand finals was the best zvz he had ever seen and i think everybody was blown away by that 4 pronged attack (and all of those attacks payed off too). definitely worth a watch.

To be honest im so sad for Grubby defeating Nerchio (although the game 2 was epic). He was on his way for a EG All-kill. Knocking both Thorzain and Demuslin from the loser bracket. Only Stephano was left but Grubby intervened.

artosis casted DRG vs Nestea at GomTV, the actual best ZvZ of all time, he was lying to serve his employers at the time (WCS)

Also you could make a pretty good highlight clip of Artosis' hilariously obvious hyperbole throughout the years

Grubny vs. Nerchio was just insane. Especialy 2nd game. It has been long time since I scream and clap my hands infront of my pc. Lucifron's drop play so reminds me of MVP. And about Stephano? His tripple front attack was something you don't even by Koreans on regular basis. Overall, WCS Europe was great event. Thx for it.

Nice recap! But I have to say, for a tournament this successful (highest viewer-figures in a long time, certainly the best production ever) TL's coverage has been somewhat lackluster. Certainly not up to par with the work that is done for MLG.

*I whould say live-coverage, the previews and interviews were all enjoyable.

Actually it has to do with people joining eg being statisfied with the money they make from salary alone and don't care about the game/about winning anymore...but since stephano is all about the money he will still play the same =))

Stephano proved he is the undisputed champion of Europe, dropping only a single set on his way to winning the WCS European Final.

funny headline, if you drop more than one set, its not possible to win wcs europe.

Happy - Lucifron is completely mute to me at least. Tried reloading it multiple times but can't get any sound whatsoever. That's a shame for casters were great in other games.

Twitch bug. As someone said remove time stamp and skip to the time manually and it works. Or click to pop-out window button and skip to the time there.

yea but, were any of these games the actual best XvY of all time? i'm not going to act like i have any conception about that but that 4 pronged attack was really spectacular which is why it belongs on that list in my opinion.

That Italian caster needs to be shown more love lol, I will add him to the list of foreigner casters who sound like the koreans.

First game of Vortix vs Stephano...that attack at the end was mind-blowing!

I liked this article. The write-up was accurate and in sufficient detail to convey the story of the tournament. The summary of the final placings and qualifiers was very helpful too. Also the presentation/font/colour scheme etc works extremely well. It was well done!

those guys at dreamhack never disappoint. they seem to have one of the best production teams in esports providing quality for the people there and the people watching online. dont forget that the viewership peaked at about 100k viewers at some point during the finals.

Two small errors in the text:

1. LoWeLy and LucifroN played in Looser's bracket semifinal. Looser's bracket final was LucifroN versus VortiX

2. Grubby tied 5th or 5th/6th place rather than 6th (there were 4 players ranked higher rather than 5)

If you want to watch the best games. Watch the entire Lucifron versus Stephano series, as well as Grubby versus Nerchio game 2.

First ZvZ I watched, Game 1 of Nerchio vs Sortof was a great start to the tourney, I may rate it overly highly because my expectations of ZvZ are low (mostly short predictable games) but it was a fun and entertaining first game of the day. Cast by Jorosar.

That's not how we generally roll here. See i.e. here: (Wiki)2011 MLG Pro Circuit/Orlando - MC vs. TheStC is looser's bracket final with TheStC coming from upper bracket final. So technically the IdrA vs. MC match (in Orlando) was looser's bracket match before the looser's bracket final. For me that's semifinal

Grubby vs Stareagle game 3 was so insane, I was standing behind Stareagle watching him drop into grubbys main base taking out 2 forges, 1 templar archives and if i remember correctly he even got out. Later on in the game Stareagle took one of grubbys bases and had all but won.

Then he walked into the storms.

I'm honestly not sure who took the most damage, Stareagle or Stareagle's keyboard, I AM sure that stareagle was not happy at all about it though.

Other favourite moments was walking back to your chair to watch stephano vs lowely, only to find that mouz.mana had taken my spot

I remember watching that game, and thinking no way grubby could win. Then stareagle stimmed into 3 consecutive storms losing almost all of his army, but he was still up a base so I didn't think Grubby would win. Then he pulled all of his SCVs to attack, got them all stormed then retreated. I think that is the only way to ever lose when up by so much.

Lucifron definitely kept Stephano on his toes. How Stephano won that game after losing 100+ drones I will never know. It was 20 minutes of non-stop drone frying by Lucifron's hellions and somehow Stephano still pulled it out.

Tried watching the VODs but for some reason I get more buffering then actual playing of the VOD. It's playing for 2-5 seconds then buffering for ~5 seconds over and over again. When I was watching live yesterday I occasionally had a couple of buffering moments (always during engages, typical) but not as badly as these VODs are doing at the moment.

I have no idea what is causing this problem my connection itself should be fine and more then capable of streaming these kind of VODs (fiber optic).

In "Best Games" there is the first game of grand final Stephano/Vortix, I don't know if it's the best ZvZ I ever seen but it's definetly the best move and the best multitasking ever, even outside of a ZvZ.

Do you speak Italian? Because I do and man was that guy annoying. It just can't get more biased than that. He was actually using "we" to speak about stareagle during the entire game (stuff like "we need to attack now", "great, we got his forges!!", "we're going to win this game, come on !!"), never once analyzed the situation from Grubby's point of view, and was basically screaming his lungs out in favor of stareagle the entire time (adding occasional "go Italy!" shouts from time to time). I have to say that I did enjoy the desperation in his voice and comments after those storms by Grubby :-D

Great writeup Waxangel!

That Grubby vs Nerchio game 2.............wow.....it was akin to watching HerO play. This game takes #1 game of the tournament for me, followed by Stephano vs Lucifron.

yah but it's WCS, and national language stream, I only think the "main" stream has an obligation to maintain certain level of neutrality. Korean casters are always biased as fuck when they cast WCG, and I think they prolly will be for WCS.

That just make it even more cool. If we can start getting the southern European nationalism more involved in Starcaft it will only make the competitive scene bigger and better.

"Stephano proved he is the undisputed champion of Europe, dropping only a single set on his way to winning the WCS European Final."

Not like he could drop two sets and win the tournament, ya'know? (French qualifiers do not count )

That Stareagle vs. Grubby VOD had the best cast I've ever heard in my live! And I don't even understand the language!! I didn't thought anybody can surpass the passion of a south korean cast but this guy did it easily!

I hope there a lot more tournaments cast by the italian commentator because I really want experience it in a live game.

I notice you only put game one in the suggested games for Lucifron vs. Stephano. I thought the entire series was exceptional myself so I vote you include all three.

Great games, great experience!

I'm fortunate enough to live in Stockholm so of course I went there in person. First high profile SC2 event I have attended, but certainly not the last. Sitting in crowd was INSANE.

(and no, it was not nearly as deserted as the stream would sometimes lead you to believe, a lot of people were down in the bar )

Ye, i was there aswell and it was awesome. Best series was by far Stephano v Luifron and Grubby v Nerchio, but in general Lucifrons games was awesome due to so many drone roasts and the crowd went nuts every time was awesome 2 days overall

I have no idea what is causing this problem my connection itself should be fine and more then capable of streaming these kind of VODs (fiber optic).

prolly flash player being shitty, it happened to me so I just killed all my browser windows and tried again, it worked

I tried it and even though it worked for the Grubby/Stareagle game, it didn't work for the Grubby/Nerchio and Lucifron/Stephano games. Luckily I had some stuff to do so I let the stream buffer for about 1-2 hours and was able to at least watch the Grubby/Nerchio game (2+3) which were awesome. Tomorrow I can do the same for the Lucifron games. Gotta start buffering before going to work though

The StarEagle vs Grubby with the Italian caster Vasa was simply one of the best moments of Dreamhack. At some point I thought I was watching the world cup in football.

That commentator was amazing hehe

Do you speak Italian? Because I do and man was that guy annoying. It just can't get more biased than that. He was actually using "we" to speak about stareagle during the entire game (stuff like "we need to attack now", "great, we got his forges!!", "we're going to win this game, come on !!"), never once analyzed the situation from Grubby's point of view, and was basically screaming his lungs out in favor of stareagle the entire time (adding occasional "go Italy!" shouts from time to time). I have to say that I did enjoy the desperation in his voice and comments after those storms by Grubby :-D

Sorry man that biased stuff makes him even more hilarious. I understand a bit of Italian, and yeah, it was pretty much like a football worldchampionship caster. Go Italy Go!!!

First of all I want to greet and thank all of you who have followed this two-day stream, even though we were in the local italian language you were a lot following us for all over the world.

Then what to say, read that the game of Stareagle against Grubby has been selected for best ensemble cast by teamliquid admins is really a great source of pride for us, but also for the whole of Italy, a country where esports is only dawning.

For those interested in our work we have a website www.vasacast.com, and also here's our twitch channel http://it.twitch.tv/vasa83

Thanks again to everyone for the support, it was an honor to be able to comment on such an important event!

Thanks for your casting Vasa. I didn't have the pleasure of watching it live (as I had tickets for the actual event), but I watched that VOD of you casting Grubby vs Stareagle, and for sure you have superb energy in your casting.

On a completely different note, I'm looking forward to hear "the official ruling" on the awesomeness and quality of the tournament by either TL, State of the Game or Inside the Game, and I'd love to hear Slasher get riled up about it and Stephano on LO3 as well.

I stood behind him, he simply wasn't expecting grubby to be there and only got back to watching his army when it was already being raped by storms.

Italian caster was the best I ever heard, Italian is so melodic it's a great casting language. Are you the one with the long hair who casted WCS Italy? Loved the more national approach ("our scv's , our marines etc.) SC2 needs more of that, like in any real life sport. Cheer for your countrymen!

BUT for some reason the most memorable thing that stood out for me was Lowely "dancing" Gangam Style, watch it people haha...

losers' final is lowely-lucifron
consolation finals is lucifron-vortix

That's not how we generally roll here. See i.e. here: (Wiki)2011 MLG Pro Circuit/Orlando - MC vs. TheStC is looser's bracket final with TheStC coming from upper bracket final. So technically the IdrA vs. MC match (in Orlando) was looser's bracket match before the looser's bracket final. For me that's semifinal

mm, the way i said was how dreamhack labelled their games ;D

MLG has no proper double elimination setup so they can name their games whatever they want XD

Hi guys,

I'm desperately looking for a song name, from the second day of the tourney, playing at around 9:34-9:35 in the video, it was the one before the music guy went crazy and starts playing all the songs from playlist at once it sounds like something from Avicii...thanks!

anyway great Tourney at all!!
