Feast and Famine For Foreigners

On a day when some of the biggest names in Starcraft II outside of Korea faltered and fell, it was two of Europe's unheralded players who carried on, raising the banner of foreigner hope.

Millenium's Feast already had a knack for surprising viewers, making it out of tough groups to finish in the Ro8 at the two previous IEM Global Challenge events. However, few would have expected his upset of upset performance on the second day of the World Championship. Feast topped his group and earned a Ro8 seed with a record of 4 – 1 (9 – 3 in maps), taking down oGs ace SuperNoVa, TypeReaL, EG.IdrA, and Empire|Kas – although that last victory came amidst controversy.

In fact, the only player who made Feast taste defeat was aTn.DarkFoRcE, who was the only other foreigner to make it out of the group stages on the day. DarkFoRcE's advancement to the next round with a record of 3 – 2 (7 – 6 on maps) was a smaller brand of surprise than Feast's unexpected break-out performance. Though not as well-known on a global scale (one interviewer was uncertain of his nationality), DarkFoRcE had been well-known in Europe as a skilled Zerg player, capable of meticulous play in the late game.

Disappointment for the foreign elite

Having lifted trophies on the IEM stage earlier this season, top foreigners mouz.MaNa, mTw.DIMAGA, Kas, and IdrA all turned in disappointing performances at the World Championship. DIMAGA and MaNa's troubles were more understandable, as they had the misfortune of being placed into a group with three Koreans (possibly four, depending on one's assessment of SeleCT). On the other hand, Kas and IdrA were considered favorites going into their group, with only SuperNoVa presenting a real threat on paper. In the end, they were unable to swim through Europe's formidable depth, and were washed away to early exits.

Re-game controversy in Kas vs. Feast

Feast's computer crashed and disconnected him during the second game of Kas vs Feast, and the decision was made for the two players to replay the game from the beginning. However, the decision was contentious, as Kas held a significant lead with a superior army and economy at the time of the disconnect. To some, it seemed that the threshold for a re-game had been surpassed, and that the game should have been awarded to Kas. One would not be surprised if Kas were aggrieved, as he lost in the re-game and then the series – the potential difference between his 2 – 3 exit from the tournament and a 3 – 2 advancement to the next round.

Koreans, as usual

In a repeat from day one, all four Korean players who were playing out of Korea qualified for the next round. International tournament juggernaut PuMa took the #1 spot in group C and won a Ro8 seed, while coL.Killer, Liquid`Zenio, and SuperNova also qualified. Combined with SlayerS_MMA, Empire|viOLet, EG.JYP, and SK_MC, eight of twelve players in the bracket stage are ones with Korean training and nationality.

Live Update Log

+ Show Spoiler [Past Updates] +

16:37 GMT (+00:00): Whoops, mistake on the record. If Puma loses 0 - 2 to SeleCT, Killer could still go through as first place. In any case, Puma, Killer, and Zenio are all through to the next round. Anyway, the deciding SeleCT vs PuMa series seems to be off the air.

16:35 GMT (+00:00): Killer 2 - 1 MaNa. Both make early stargates, but Killer's is far earlier and he has the higher phoenix count when they first meet. MaNa runs across the map and tries to break Killer's front after this, but is stopped by the phoenixes and the game is over.

16:33 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 2 - 0 DIMAGA. DIMAGA went for a hatch first build, and Zenio just killed it with a one base ling-bane build.

16:25 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 1 - 0 DIMAGA. The players traded blows in the mid-game, with Zenio's roach attack killing DIMAGA's third before Dima's mutalisks were out. In return, DIMAGA killed Zenio's third with his mutas before there were infestors to defend. The game was decided after Zenio sent burrowed infestors to destroy one of DIMAGA's bases with infested Terrans, and DIMAGA decided to give chase with mutalisks and an overseer. DIMAGA chased just a little too far, and ended up having his mutalisks chain-fungaled and killed. Zenio then attacked with roaches, hydralisks, and infestors to win the game.

16:22 GMT (+00:00): Killer 1 - 0 MaNa. MaNa opens DTs while Killer starts with a quick robo. MaNa taps out when Killer kills his cloaked units just outside the ramp.

16:09 GMT (+00:00): Zenio vs DIMAGA setting up on ESL Main and ESL France.

16:04 GMT (+00:00): PuMa clinches first place in his group, while Killer takes 2nd place at least. MaNa is confirmed to be eliminated, while Zenio, DIMAGA, and SeleCT still have a chance.

15:59 GMT (+00:00): Killer 2 - 0 DIMAGA. Killer opens with phoenixes after expanding, and kills a host of overlords and drones. DIMAGA responds by attempting a baneling bust, but is unable to break through due to forcefields. Killer makes an army and wins.

15:53 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 2 - 1 SeleCT. Once again, the game was a tight affair until Zenio reached hive tech. SeleCT couldn't find a way to deal with either brood lords or ultralisks, and was forced to GG out.

15:46 GMT (+00:00): Killer 1 - 0 DIMAGA. Long split map ZvP on Metropolis. Killer gains advantage through constant harass and storm drops, and wins the big fights often enough to take it.

15:27 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 1 - 1 SeleCT. It seemed like Zenio was on the backfoot as SeleCT pushed with strong macro off three bases, but once Zenio got brood lords out with appropriate accompaniment, the tide turned back. SeleCT couldn't find an effective way to deal with Zenio's hive army, and GG'd out.

15:22 GMT (+00:00): Killer vs DIMAGA came on ESL Mainstream, GoodGameRU and Gamesports.

15:10 GMT (+00:00): MaNa 0 - 2 PuMa. PuMa opens with a hellion drop, looking towards 1-1-1. Catching MaNa while his first stalkers were at PuMa's front, he kills something like 26 workers while holding his own main, and goes on to kill MaNa by dropping more marines and hellions.

15:10 GMT (+00:00): SeleCT 1 - 0 Zenio. Zenio attempted an ill-fated muta-bane-ling bust as SeleCT went up to three bases, which gave SeleCT a solid lead. Minutes later, SeleCT was able to push out with a marine-medivac-tank force Zenio was unable to handle.

14:59 GMT (+00:00): MaNa 0 - 1 PuMa. Their armies max out, and after much posturing engage. PuMa gets the better of the fight and presses his advantage to kill MaNa.

14:58 GMT (+00:00): Zenio vs SeleCT started on GLHF.tv and ESL France.

14:54 GMT (+00:00): And that's it for group D! Feast goes through in first, while SuperNova and DarkForce take 2nd and 3rd respectively.

14:51 GMT (+00:00): Kas 2 - 1 DarkForce. Both players allowed each other to macro-up and max-out, which led to Kas slowly by surely pushing forward, erasing DarkForce's bases and taking more for himself.

14:46 GMT (+00:00): Idra 2 - 1 SuperNova. Idra uses a ling-infestor build on Antiga, and when SuperNova is unable to damage with his drops Idra repeatedly crushes his pushes. Eventually he wins via attrition.

14:40 GMT (+00:00): Mana vs Puma on ESL Poland and ESL main.

14:30 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce 1 - 1 Kas. DarkForce manages to tie up the series.

14:30 GMT (+00:00): Feast 2 - 0 Real. Feast took a faster expand than ReaL and managed to defend it, which resulted in a later victory.

14:29 GMT (+00:00): Idra 1 - 1 SuperNova. SuperNova spend the early game annoying Idra with elevator drops into his main, but Idra repels them without taking too much damage. Delaying until hive, Idra wins with broodlord infestor as SuperNova doesn't have enough vikings to deal with the air.

14:18 GMT (+00:00): Kas 1 - 0 DarkForce. Standard Kas, with his excellent macro allowing him to send endless waves to wear DarkForce down until he was forced to quit.

14:06 GMT (+00:00): Feast 1 - 0 ReaL.

14:05 GMT (+00:00): SuperNova 1 - 0 Idra. SuperNova sieges up outside Idra's natural with cloaked banshees, bunkers and turrets, Idra unable to break it tries to counterattack but it doesn't manage to break through the marines SuperNova left at home.

13:45 GMT (+00:00): SuperNova 2- 1 Kas. SuperNova looked to be behind due to reaper expanding versus Kas's rax expand, but a hugely damaging blue-flame hellion drop gave him a gigantic advantage. After that, SuperNova just had to turtle up, mass a mech army, and move out to win.

13:30 GMT (+00:00): SuperNova 1 - 1 Kas. SuperNova opened with a hellion-reaper attack against Kas's fast expansion, and did enough damage to give himself an advantage as he followed with a slightly later expand of his own. Later, SuperNova crushed Kas' front while Kas tried to get back into the game with an MM drop, also holding off the drop with ease to win the game.

13:20 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 0 - 2 PuMa. Zenio opens with mutas which don't do the damage they need to. PuMa continues with drops and pushing several parts of the map at once, and after several favorable engagements comes out with the victory.

13:16 GMT (+00:00): Kas 1 - 0 SuperNova. After some early game shenanigans on both sides, the game stabilized into a half-map war on Shakuras. With both players going marine-tank, Kas's positioning and choice of engagements were better, winning him the game.

13:12 GMT (+00:00): Feast 2 - 0 SuperNova, SuperNova 2 - 1 ReaL. Looks like they were played off-stream.

13:02 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 0 - 1 PuMa. PuMa drops while pushing across the map, and splits Zenio's forces enough to kill the Zerg fourth. He then pushes into Zenio's natural and wins after a last ditch attempt to break the tank line.

13:00 GMT (+00:00): Kas vs Supernova starting on ESL Main and ESL France.

12:56 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce 2 - 1 IdrA. DarkForce and IdrA took turns going at each other with ling-baneling, and DarkForce came out ahead by ten-oddish supply. IdrA scouted out the fact that DarkForce had taken a faster third base with this advantage, and GG'd out.

12:47 GMT (+00:00): Zenio vs Puma starting on GLHF.tv

12:43 GMT (+00:00): DIMAGA 2 - 1 MaNa. DIMAGA swept through Mana's army with an interesting composition of lings, baneling drops, and corruptors.

12:42 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce 1 - 1 IdrA. Both players allowed each other to macro up on there bases, with DarkForce going roach-hydra and IdrA going roach-infestor. DarkForce's composition and positioning were better during the max-out engagement, allowing him to win the game.

12:32 GMT (+00:00): Kas 0 - 2 ReaL. After starting reasonably normally, ReaL made DTs after his third base was secured and they stormed through Kas' base destroying things. His later push with storm and gateway units cleaned up.

12:30 GMT (+00:00): IdrA 1 - 0 DarkForce. Curiously enough, both players went for muta-ling, making SC2 ZvZ look an awful lot like Brood War. DarkForce looked to be ahead after a big baneling hit allowed his zerglings to nearly kill IdrA's third base, but DarkForce refused to focus fire down a hatchery that was down to double digit hit points. IdrA was able to recover and win the air-battle, taking the game.

12:27 GMT (+00:00): DIMAGA 1 - 1 MaNa. DIMAGA easily deflected some of MaNa's stargate harassment, while also picking off sentries with speedlings due to MaNa's inattentiveness. All this allowed DIMAGA to pump straight Hydra out of three bases and overrun MaNa with ease.

12:18 GMT (+00:00): IdrA vs DarkForce under way on imba.tv and ESL France.

12:14 GMT (+00:00): Kas 0 - 1 ReaL. Long back and forth macro game, Real is able to deny expansions while taking his own long enough to win with storms and colossus.

12:10 GMT (+00:00): MaNa 1 - 0 DIMAGA. MaNa looked like he was far behind after a ling+baneling drop attack hurt him while he tried to go up to three bases. However, DIMAGA overestimated his advantage and attacked wastefully many times, allowing MaNa to slowly rebuild his economy and army. He was able to finally put together a mothership assisted deathball, that allowed him to defeat DIMAGA's brood lords and ultralisks and take the game.

11:57 GMT (+00:00): Feast 1 - 2 DarkForce. DarkForce kills Feast with roaches, broodlords, and infestors after Feast's 2 base 6 gate and blink attack fails to do enough damage.

11:54 GMT (+00:00): Kas vs Real started on ESL Main and GameSports

11:46 GMT (+00:00): MaNa vs DIMAGA starting on ESL Poland and GLHF.

11:41 GMT (+00:00): Idra 0 - 2 Kas. When Idra was unable to stop Kas' first drop before it did a lot of damage, Kas pushed out and killed him with his first army.

11:37 GMT (+00:00): Feast 1 - 1 DarkForce. Feast spends a long time attacking DarkForce's third with his own 2 bases, and when he is unable to take it down DakrForce counters and kills him with maxed hydra-roach.

11:30 GMT (+00:00): Idra 0 - 1 Kas. They play a long back and forth battle over the center of the map with maxed out armies, Kas pulls ahead with drop play and Idra's brood lords are unable to bring him back.

11:29 GMT (+00:00): Puma 2 - 1 Killer. It was a strange game where PuMa started off by doing a good amount of damage to Killer with a marauder-hellion rush, but was then counter-attacked and took some damage himself. It put both players in an awkward 1 base vs 1 base situation for a while, but PuMa came out of it ahead by focusing on infantry and getting a second orbital up, while Killer stayed on one base and went for phoenixes which proved to be very ineffective. PuMa rolled over Killer with MMM soon after.

11:21 GMT (+00:00): Feast 1 - 0 DarkForce. Feast attacks with a 6 gateway blink stalker attack, and slowly whittles down DarkForce's burrowed roach army.

11:18 GMT (+00:00): SeleCT 2 - 1 DIMAGA. SeleCT won a decisive victory during his first big push to raze DIMAGA's fourth, and from there it just snowballed into an easy victory.

11:08 GMT (+00:00): Killer 1 - 1 PuMa. Killer managed to keep a hidden, fourth base running during a macro war, and it ended up being the difference as he was able to overpower PuMa with superior production.

11:08 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce vs Feast coming up on ESL France.

11:04 GMT (+00:00): IdrA vs Kas coming up on ESL Main stream,

11:00 GMT (+00:00): Feast 2 - 1 Idra. Feast puts pressure on Idra's third with 4 gates after expanding, and when it fails to do damage he opts for heavy 2 base blink stalker play which Idra is unable to stop.

10:53 GMT (+00:00): SeleCT 1 - 1 DIMAGA. SeleCT secured three bases and went into constantly-rallied-terran-army mode, and it was on DIMAGA to hold off the attacks. DIMAGA managed to defend well for a period, but eventually he was worn down and defeated.

10:47 GMT (+00:00): Puma 1 - 0 Killer. In a long macro game that had both players expanding freely, Killer's inability to protect his colossi from Puma's +3 vikings cost him the game.

10:45 GMT (+00:00): Feast 1 - 1 Idra. Feast goes for a 7 gate plus immortal/warp prism attack off two bases and kills Idra's third immediately, Idra taps out.

10:35 GMT (+00:00): Feast 0 - 1 Idra. They each get to 3 bases without much happening, Idra makes a ton of mutalisks and his muta ball is unable to be stopped by the stalkers and phoenixes of Feast.

10:25 GMT (+00:00): DIMAGA 1 - 0 SeleCT. DIMAGA was allowed to build ups his economy too much, as SeleCT's drops weren't enough to keep him at bay. DIMAGA eventually just powered through with muta-ling-bane, dealing huge damage to SeleCT, and finished him off with ultralisks.

10:24 GMT (+00:00): Puma vs Killer started on GLHF.tv

10:18 GMT (+00:00): IdrA vs Feast soon on ESL main and ESL France.

10:12 GMT (+00:00): MaNa 0 - 2 Zenio. MaNa goes for a quick third while pressuring with a warp prism, which Zenio stops while taking down the third. Zenio takes control of the map with mutas and wears MaNa down until there are no more Protoss forces.

10:11 GMT (+00:00): Feast 2 - 0 Kas. Feast won the regame, doing a 2/2 Zealot-Archon push that dealt a lot of damage to Kas as he went up to three bases.

10:02 GMT (+00:00): SeleCT vs DIMAGA starting up at IMBA.tv and GameSports.

09:55 GMT (+00:00): Kas vs Feast game 2 to be a regame. Kas seems not pleased, game is slow to start.

09:50 GMT (+00:00) MaNa 0 - 1 Zenio. MaNa makes the critical mistake of trying to base trade a Zerg, as Protoss, and loses the fight to Zenio's mutas.

09:49 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce 2 - 0 ReaL. DarkForce hit with a relentless wave of roaches and hydralisks as ReaL tried to secure three base for himself. ReaL's defenses weren't up to the task, and he GG'd out.

09:36 GMT (+00:00): Mana vs Zenio starting on ESL Poland and GLHF.tv

09:35 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce 1 - 0 ReaL. ReaL tried to go Phoenix heavy play with some DTs again, but DarkForce swatted it aside with a well timed corruptor/roach push into ReaL's third base that did a ton of damage. ReaL never really covered from that damage, and though he managed to play a longer game after, he was never had a chance.

09:33 GMT (+00:00): Kas 0 - 1 Feast. During game 2 Kas is ahead by quite a margin, but Feast's pc freezes. Not sure what is happening here yet.

09:27 GMT (+00:00): PuMa 2 - 1 DIMAGA. DIMAGA managed to hold off PuMa's continuous pressure until he got to hive and brood lords, but wasn't able to protect them adequately once they were out. Once the brood lords were dead, he had a worse army and a worse economy, which naturally led to a loss.

09:23 GMT (+00:00): Killer 2 - 1 Zenio. Off-stream. @Teamliquidlive: "Aww @LiquidZenio falls to a similar build by Killer. Nexus first into +1 Zealots with 1 Void Ray and 3 Phoenix. Zenio 1-2 Killer."

09:17 GMT (+00:00): DarkForce vs Real starting on Imba.tv & Moricup

09:13 GMT (+00:00) SeleCT 1 - 2 MaNa. They each get to 3 bases without much difficulty, SeleCT's drops are ineffective due to good cannon placement and MaNa rolls him over.

09:12 GMT (+00:00) Kas 0 - 1 Feast. Feast goes for 3 gate pressure after 1 gate FE and Kas doesn't hold.

09:10 GMT (+00:00): Killer 1 - 1 Zenio. Off stream, but according to @teamliquidlive: "Judging by the scorescreen, @LiquidZenio took too much damage to the harass of Killer. 144 drones made in total, never got a big enough army"

09:07 GMT (+00:00): DIMAGA 1 - 1 PuMa. PuMa pestered DIMAGA with drops all game, but couldn't stop him from taking his base, droning up, and getting all the tech he needed. DIMAGA crippled PuMa with a massive muta, ling, bane attack, and then finished him off later with mass ultralisks and infestors.

09:06 GMT (+00:00): Kas vs Feast started on ESL SC2.

08:58 GMT (+00:00): Zenio 1 - 0 Killer. Zenio wins in unstreamed game.

08:58 GMT (+00:00): SuperNova 2 - 0 DarkForce. SuperNova opens reactor hellion, which kill a few drones, and then moves into cloaked banshees which kill a lot more. He builds up an army and crushes DarkForce with the economic advantage.

08:57 GMT (+00:00) SeleCT 1 - 1 MaNa. Typical Tal'Darim PvT slugfest, back and forth with drops and huge armies battling each other. SeleCT has an unscouted base in the corner for much of the game that ends up being the difference, when MaNa finds it and kills it his army is trapped in the corner and dies to end the game.

08:56 GMT (+00:00): ReaL 2 - 0 IdrA. ReaL made phoenix/DT work as a strategy, continuing his string of stylish wins over more famous opponents.

08:47 GMT (+00:00): SuperNoVa 1 - 0 DarkForce.

08:45 GMT (+00:00): Puma 1 - 0 DIMAGA. PuMa applied strong pressure through-out a relatively long game, and managed to take DIMAGA down before he could get any useful hive units.

08:41 GMT (+00:00): ReaL 1 - 0 IdrA. Real went for a quick three bases on Daybreak, and while IdrA applied pressure, he couldn't do too much damage. IdrA took expansions on his side of the map and continued to be aggressive, but couldn't really make a dent. ReaL eventually maxed up and moved out, and defeated IdrA's still lair-stage army for the victory/

08:28 GMT (+00:00): DIMAGA vs PuMa being set up on GoodGameRU and ESLFrance.

08:30 GMT (+00:00): SeleCT 0 - 1 MaNa. SeleCT opened 2 rax vs 1 gate expo and forced a cancel on the nexus. MaNa bought enough time to make gateways, and warped in at a forward pylon to charge through SeleCT's defense and kill him.

08:26 GMT (+00:00): IdrA vs ReaL starts on IMBA.tv

08:24 GMT (+00:00): ReaL vs IdrA was going to be streamed, but MoMan got the boot

08:22 GMT (+00:00): MaNa vs SeleCT starts on ZeddSC and GLHF.tv

08:11 GMT (+00:00): @RotterdaM08: 'We'll start in 10 Min or so with Intel Extreme Masters day 2 ;D Can't wait! Idra, kas,Mana, killer, puma and so much moaaaaar!'

08:00 GMT (+00:00): DarKFoRcE vs SuperNoVa will be up first at 08:10 GMT (+00:00) on the ESL SC2 stream, if the b.net scheduled maintenance ends in time.

07:46 GMT (+00:00): Just chillin'

  • Game Two: MaNa goes for a quick third while pressuring with a warp prism, which Zenio stops while taking down the third. Zenio takes control of the map with mutas and wears MaNa down until there are no more Protoss forces.

  • Zenio 2 - 0 MaNa

SeleCT vs DIMAGA - Imba.tv
  • Game One: DIMAGA was allowed to build ups his economy too much, as SeleCT's drops weren't enough to keep him at bay. DIMAGA eventually just powered through with muta-ling-bane, dealing huge damage to SeleCT, and finished him off with ultralisks.

  • Game Two: SeleCT secured three bases and went into constantly-rallied-terran-army mode, and it was on DIMAGA to hold off the attacks. DIMAGA managed to defend well for a period, but eventually he was worn down and defeated.

  • Game Three: SeleCT won a decisive victory during his first big push and razed DIMAGA's fourth, crushing DIMAGA's ling-bane, and from there it just snowballed into an easy victory.

  • SeleCT 2 - 1 DIMAGA

Killer vs Puma - GLHF.tv
  • Game One: In a long macro game that had both players expanding freely, Killer's inability to protect his colossi from Puma's +3 vikings cost him the game.

  • Game Two: Killer managed to keep a hidden, fourth base running during a macro war, and it ended up being the difference as he was able to overpower PuMa with superior production.

  • Game Three: It was a strange game where PuMa started off by doing a good amount of damage to Killer with a marauder-hellion rush, but was then counter-attacked and took some damage himself.

  • Killer 1 - 2 Puma

MaNa vs DIMAGA - ZeddSC // GLHF.tv
  • Game One: MaNa looked like he was far behind after a ling+baneling drop attack hurt him while he tried to go up to three bases. However, DIMAGA overestimated his advantage and attacked wastefully many times, allowing MaNa to slowly rebuild his economy and army. He was able to finally put together a mothership assisted deathball, that allowed him to defeat DIMAGA's brood lords and ultralisks and take the game.

  • Game Two: DIMAGA easily deflected some of MaNa's stargate harassment, while also picking off sentries with speedlings due to MaNa's inattentiveness. All this allowed DIMAGA to pump straight Hydra out of three bases and overrun MaNa with ease.

  • Game Three: DIMAGA swept through Mana's army with an interesting composition of lings, baneling drops, and corruptors.

  • MaNa 1 - 2 DIMAGA

Zenio vs Puma - GLHF.tv
  • Game One: PuMa drops while pushing across the map, and splits Zenio's forces enough to kill the Zerg fourth. He then pushes into Zenio's natural and wins after a last ditch attempt to break the tank line.

  • Game Two: Zenio opens with mutas which don't do the damage they need to. PuMa continues with drops and pushing several parts of the map at once, and after several favorable engagements comes out with the victory.

  • PuMa 2 - 0 Zenio

MaNa vs PuMa
  • Game Three: Their armies max out, and after much posturing engage. PuMa gets the better of the fight and presses his advantage to kill MaNa.

  • Game Two: PuMa opens with a hellion drop, looking towards 1-1-1. Catching MaNa while his first stalkers were at PuMa's front, he kills something like 26 workers while holding his own main, and goes on to kill MaNa by dropping more marines and hellions.

  • MaNa 0 - 2 PuMa

Zenio vs SeleCT
  • Game One: Zenio attempted an ill-fated muta-bane-ling bust as SeleCT went up to three bases, which gave SeleCT a solid lead. Minutes later, SeleCT was able to push out with a marine-medivac-tank force Zenio was unable to handle.

  • Game Two: It seemed like Zenio was on the backfoot as SeleCT pushed with strong macro off three bases, but once Zenio got brood lords out with appropriate accompaniment, the tide turned back. SeleCT couldn't find an effective way to deal with Zenio's hive army, and GG'd out.

  • Game Three: Once again, the game was a tight affair until Zenio reached hive tech. SeleCT couldn't find a way to deal with either brood lords or ultralisks, and was forced to GG out.

  • Zenio 2 - 1 SeleCT

Killer vs DIMAGA
  • Game One: Long split map ZvP on Metropolis. Killer gains advantage through constant harass and storm drops, and wins the big fights often enough to take it.

  • Game Two: Killer opens with phoenixes after expanding, and kills a host of overlords and drones. DIMAGA responds by attempting a baneling bust, but is unable to break through due to forcefields. Killer makes an army and wins.

  • Killer 2 - 0 DIMAGA

Killer vs MaNa
  • Game One: MaNa opens DTs while Killer starts with a quick robo. MaNa taps out when Killer kills his cloaked units just outside the ramp.

  • Game Two: MaNa proxies 2 gates in Killer's main. Killer sees it and builds a cannon, but it is too late and he GGs as MaNa is pillaging his mineral line.

  • Game Three: Both make early stargates, but Killer's is far earlier and he has the higher phoenix count when they first meet. MaNa runs across the map and tries to break Killer's front after this, but is stopped by the phoenixes and the game is over.

  • Killer 2 - 1 MaNa

Zenio vs DIMAGA
  • Game One: The players traded blows in the mid-game, with Zenio's roach attack killing DIMAGA's third before Dima's mutalisks were out.

  • Game Two: DIMAGA went for a hatch first build, and Zenio just killed it with a one base ling-bane build.

  • Zenio 2 - 0 DIMAGA

IdrA vs ReaL - Imba.tv
  • Game One: Real went for a quick three bases on Daybreak, and while IdrA applied pressure, he couldn't do too much damage. IdrA took expansions on his side of the map and continued to be aggressive, but couldn't really make a dent. ReaL eventually maxed up and moved out, and defeated IdrA's still lair-stage army for the victory/

  • Game Two: ReaL made phoenix/DT work as a strategy, continuing his string of stylish wins over more famous opponents.

  • IdrA 0 - 2 ReaL

DarkForce vs SuperNoVa - ESL SC2 Stream
  • Game One: SuperNoVa won.

  • Game Two: SuperNova opens reactor hellion, which kill a few drones, and then moves into cloaked banshees which kill a lot more. He builds up an army and crushes DarkForce with the economic advantage.

  • DarkForce 0 - 2 Supernova

Kas vs Feast - ESL SC2 Stream

  • Game One: Feast goes for 3 gate pressure after 1 gate FE and Kas doesn't hold.

  • Game Two - Regame: Feast's computer crashed, forcing a re-game. Kas was up 40+ supply at the point of the crash.

  • Game Two: Feast won the regame, doing a 2/2 Zealot-Archon push that dealt a lot of damage to Kas as he went up to three bases.

  • Kas 0 - 2 Feast

DarkForce vs ReaL - Imba.tv
  • Game One: ReaL tried to go Phoenix heavy play with some DTs again, but DarkForce swatted it aside with a well timed corruptor/roach push into ReaL's third base that did a ton of damage. ReaL never really covered from that damage, and though he managed to play a longer game after, he was never had a chance.

  • Game Two: DarkForce hit with a relentless wave of roaches and hydralisks as ReaL tried to secure three base for himself. ReaL's defenses weren't up to the task, and he GG'd out.

  • DarkForce 2 - 0 ReaL

Idra vs Feast - ESL SC2 Stream
  • Game One: They each get to 3 bases without much happening, Idra makes a ton of mutalisks and his muta ball is unable to be stopped by the stalkers and phoenixes of Feast.

  • Game Two: Feast goes for a 7 gate plus immortal/warp prism attack off two bases and kills Idra's third immediately, Idra taps out.

  • Game Three: Feast puts pressure on Idra's third with 3 gates after expanding, and when it fails to do damage he opts for heavy 2 base blink stalker play which Idra is unable to stop.

  • Feast 2 - 1 Idra

Feast vs DarkForce - ESL France
  • Game One: Feast attacks with a 6 gateway blink stalker attack, and slowly whittles down DarkForce's burrowed roach army.

  • Game Two: Feast spends a long time attacking DarkForce's third with his own 2 bases, and when he is unable to take it down DakrForce counters and kills him with maxed hydra-roach.

  • Game Three: DarkForce kills Feast with roaches, broodlords, and infestors after Feast's 2 base 6 gate and blink attack fails to do enough damage.

  • Feast 1 - 2 DarkForce

Kas vs IdrA - ESL Main
  • Game One: They play a long back and forth battle over the center of the map with maxed out armies, Kas pulls ahead with drop play and Idra's brood lords are unable to bring him back.

  • Game Two: When Idra was unable to stop Kas' first drop before it did a lot of damage, Kas pushed out and killed him with his first army.

  • Idra 0 - 2 Kas

ReaL vs Kas
  • Game One: Long back and forth macro game, Real is able to deny expansions while taking his own long enough to win with storms and colossus.

  • Game Two: After starting reasonably normally, ReaL made DTs after his third base was secured and they stormed through Kas' base destroying things. His later push with storm and gateway units cleaned up.

  • ReaL 2 - 0 Kas

IdrA vs DarkForCe
  • Game One: Curiously enough, both players went for muta-ling, making SC2 ZvZ look an awful lot like Brood War. DarkForce looked to be ahead after a big baneling hit allowed his zerglings to nearly kill IdrA's third base, but DarkForce refused to focus fire down a hatchery that was down to double digit hit points. IdrA was able to recover and win the air-battle, taking the game.

  • Game Two: Both players allowed each other to macro up on there bases, with DarkForce going roach-hydra and IdrA going roach-infestor. DarkForce's composition and positioning were better during the max-out engagement, allowing him to win the game.

  • Game Three: DarkForce and IdrA took turns going at each other with ling-baneling, and DarkForce came out ahead by ten-oddish supply. IdrA scouted out the fact that DarkForce had taken a faster third base with this advantage, and GG'd out.
  • IdrA 1 - 2 DarkForce

Kas vs SuperNova
  • Game One: After some early game shenanigans on both sides, the game stabilized into a half-map war on Shakuras. With both players going marine-tank, Kas's positioning and choice of engagements were better, winning him the game.

  • Game Two: SuperNova opened with a hellion-reaper attack against Kas's fast expansion, and did enough damage to give himself an advantage as he followed with a slightly later expand of his own. Later, SuperNova crushed Kas' front while Kas tried to get back into the game with an MM drop, also holding off the drop with ease to win the game.

  • Game Three: SuperNova looked to be behind due to reaper expanding versus Kas's rax expand, but a hugely damaging blue-flame hellion drop gave him a gigantic advantage. After that, SuperNova just had to turtle up, mass a mech army, and move out to win.

  • Kas 1 - 2 SuperNova.

Feast vs Real
  • Game One: Feast won.

  • Game Two: Feast took a faster expand than ReaL and managed to defend it, which resulted in a later victory.

  • Feast 2 - 0 ReaL

SuperNova vs IdrA
  • Game One: SuperNova sieges up outside Idra's natural with cloaked banshees, bunkers and turrets, Idra unable to break it tries to counterattack but it doesn't manage to break through the marines SuperNova left at home.

  • Game Two: SuperNova spend the early game annoying Idra with elevator drops into his main, but Idra repels them without taking too much damage. Delaying until hive, Idra wins with broodlord infestor as SuperNova doesn't have enough vikings to deal with the air.

  • Game Three: Idra uses a ling-infestor build on Antiga, and when SuperNova is unable to damage with his drops Idra repeatedly crushes his pushes. Eventually he wins via attrition.

  • SuperNova 1 - 2 IdrA

Kas vs DarkForce
  • Game One: Standard Kas, with his excellent macro allowing him to send endless waves to wear DarkForce down until he was forced to quit.

  • Game Two: ???

  • Game Three: Both players allowed each other to macro-up and max-out, which led to Kas slowly by surely pushing forward, erasing DarkForce's bases and taking more for himself.

  • Kas 2 - 1 DarkForce

Ummm, IdrA really couldn't win the third game, 3 base protoss vs 2 base zerg (no drones on third) and he had nothing to deal with the phoenix... I dont think it was an early gg personally

Honestly it would be an upset if he would advance. He hasn't won a single Bo3 ever since the NASL Season 2 finals back in December. In the last 3 months his only victory has been a Bo1 in the NASTL against Axslav.

Just tuned in for Feast-Kas Game 3; damn that looked onesided.

Exactly what I think. Idra is very unconvincing for quite a while now. Can't deny being a little gleeful over Idra most likely not advancing.

I concur. He is so unprofessional and its coming back to haunt him. The only thing about him thats good is my wife loathes Idra more than most and when I watch him I have alot of fun hearing her cheering for the other guy and nodding knowingly every time he quits early (which is practically every game this year) LOL.

He needs to knuckle down and watch more DRG, Nestea and Stephano...those guys can handle early pressure and do not keep leeting winning positions slip...and when they do lose its when their opponents play flawlessly al la Polt at Assembly.

Wow. When I first heard of idra, he seemed decent. Been a few months now and it just seems like nothing is working out for him. I don't really keep up with him much, but something just needs to be done.

Other than that, I really want to see VODs of MMA. Being new and all, I am just enjoying getting to know all the pros, and an undefeated run is something I probably don't want.to miss. Even if I don't main terran lol

Exactly what I think. Idra is very unconvincing for quite a while now. Can't deny being a little gleeful over Idra most likely not advancing.

You do realize that I'll want credit for that? I said that when he was down at 0-1.

I called that he would do amazing stuff the day I saw him rock Kiev's foundations with that ridiculous blink play.
I'm so pumped to see how far he goes in this tourney. ^_^

I think Idra needs to take a month or so to clear his mind and make a decision on whether he still has the desire to keep play professionally or not.

Based on Grubby's appearance at the commentator's table, he could make a really good caster. I hope he sticks around at IEM and can be seen again tomorrow.

I was also pretty suprised to see LoL stream hitting 130k while starcraft was below 30k, ouch. Really says something about the effect a diminishing player base is having on viewer ship.

Puma definitely wins. Even if he loses 2-0 to Select...
8-4 = 66.6....% for Puma
9-5 = 64.3% for Killer

I was at cebit yesturday and it was quite sad. Lol had the big stage with interviews an the players playing on the stage and scII had a little side stage next to some fairbooth, that was way louder than the casters. Meeting the players was cool, but other than that the event was kind of a let down. I guess I need to go to other places in europe for Dreamhack/Assembly ... to get some exciting live starcraft.

Same here. After he already showed strong play in the previous two events there was really no reason to be surprised here that he can keep up with everyone.

I think the article overestimates Idra and Kas a little bit. They weren't clear favourites against anyone in the group, not because they are bad but because none of their opponents were bad either. They all made the playoffs in IEM events before.

Brackets are posted. I hope Zenio is practicing his ZvT. If there's any possible way he can beat Supervoa AND MMA (and then possibly Puma), well, that would just be awesome. Liquid 2012.

Between Hasuobs and Feast I think there's a very good shot of a foreigner being in the semi-final. Barring my overly-optimistic hopes for Zenio, it looks like MMA and MC will shut down any possibility of a Zerg making it that far.

Even if there's 0 upsets in the bracket, a finals between MC and MMA should be very, very entertaining (plus a semi-final between Puma and MMA).

I know its a big troll or whatev, but its so funny how Americans bash France and shit all the time. But then they have a brilliant player (Stephano) and we want to claim him as our own... lol. Stephano, such an awesome guy, and amazing player. IdrA's never going to change. The only way to improve his game I think would be to take a break and go meditate with monks or something. The real American hero zerg is Sheth. I hope he goes back to try GSL again.

after that day the rest of the tourney is sooo predictable imo

The only question left is weather or not someone lucks out in a PvP vs MC
(which would be bad -since he is the only real threat to MMA)

I like the fakt two German lokals are still in (and Socke delivered already before getting eliminated in a 3way tie)

Sad about Real (dedicated Korean exilant, fighting for his pro gamer dreams in Germany)

o.0 Feast seems like a serious contender for the foreigners on this one... HWAITING!

agreed for the most part - hes seems kind of hungry as it seems

You're actually... worse than the rabid fanboys with your pathetic "HA! HE LOST! WHAT UP BITCHES?!?" attitude. Do you actually care about a specific player winning, or are you simply content with trolling around waiting for IdrA to bust just so you can jump up and down in excitement?

Zenio vs. SuperNoVa... that's going to be a hell of a series, I can already feel it. PuMa vs. JYP (if he wins) will also make for some really good games.

Other than that, I'm expecting MMA to roll on cruise control through pretty much whoever he faces and smash them all.

The idea of giving "foreign" flags to Koreans seems like a cheap way of trying to claim them and put their wins under a foreigner heading.

Idra surprises me these days. IDK how any player can be so inconsistent, especially one who is a professional gamer, through and through.

He hasn't been inconsistent, he's been consistently bad for the last few months. His last high placement was MLG Orlando and ASUS ROG (which wasn't as difficult a tourney as MLG). After that he went 0-2 at providence, knocked out of Code A, 0-2 at MLG Winter Arena, and now 1-4 at IEM.

I actually get satisfaction when I see him lose, don't know if that's an ok thing to say here. He looks so disrespectful towards his opponents, not deeming them worthy of the standard manner ; and/or to the viewers, not giving them proper games (naniwa probe rushing, anyone? early "ggs" feel exactly the same, to me).

I guess some are a little bit unfair about the Gracken...

imo winning tournaments and matches and playing good are two different things.

I am not a fanboy at all, but every SC2 player who knows what he he is talking about -has to respect his skills.
And I have seen some excellent games out of him and was highly entertained

Its rather sadening to see a random EU Protoss 2baseallinning its way to the semis...

But hey lets jump on the Stephano train, watch his stream seeing him grinding low tier players on ladder and cups with(out/low) Korean appearance and say he is the best foreign (Zerg) player YAI!!!

those games against Kas were, simply put, embarrassing, no?

loosing in a somewhat close game vs the (maybe) best foreign Terran on a close to imbalanced map after your mindset got demolished in your worst mu vs 2 Protoss is not really embarrassing
game 2 was like 70% bad luck (ov + undetected doubledrop)

those games against Kas were, simply put, embarrassing, no?

loosing in a somewhat close game vs the (maybe) best foreign Terran on a close to imbalanced map after your mindset got demolished in your worst mu vs 2 Protoss is not really embarrassing
game 2 was like 70% bad luck (ov + undetected doubledrop)

No, Idra just blew. Simple as that. As others have said, he is consistently bad.

Pity about Dimaga's results, the gameplay was weird but you can't knock it when you see lings+hydras beating colossi+stalkers+HT over multiple engagements.

The major thing I've noticed is the low quality of micro in the metagame atm, also most of the dominant players I've seen in this tournament are distinguished by their micro (try to imagine MMA throwing away hellions to small numbers of zlings as I've seen foreigner terrans do etc)

Puma was impressive Tomorrow should be good.

Uh are these brackets rigged?!?! (obviously not but still)

How are virtually all the top Koreans in the top half, and the bottom is all PvP except for 1 ZvZ? Crazy.

No Stephano is absolutely top tier foreigner. (you have missed my point big man)

But sooner or later in defending idrA you have to call him one of the best foreign Zergs - then some wild haters appear and name Stephano (and his lately impressive results)

And that comparison is just not justified taking a look on the competitions and the lineups.

to convince nowadays you have to grow balls and go to Korea.
(Stephano should not - for financial reasons and to not blow up his overratedness
-> because if he would ever drop there - the same kids calling IrdA a bad player now would call one Stephano then!°

Almost correct. I don't see though how there is one of each race in group C? 3 Protosses in fact.

There is some truth in what you say. IdrA actually went over to Korea (second time now for SC2) to compete in the toughest leagues of them all - the GSL. I like both Stephano and IdrA, but until Stephano goes over to Korea and gets at least into the Ro16 of Code S I won't think that he is the best foreigner Zerg there is.

How can you even be fully objective with a game like Starcraft 2, with 3 races and luck being an important factor as well.

Also, how is it unfair or not objective? Stephano has played many koreans by now, another example is Blizzard Cup where he managed to play well. Also, how is consistently winning cups (with high level foreigner players, we're talking about the best foreigner Zerg, right?) with many BO1 not saying anything?

It's gotta be a major mental block that he can't get past. I think he should just switch back to Terran, maybe it would relight his competitive fire. He doesn't seem have that drive anymore.

I honestly don't think he ever had any competitive fire. I've always enjoyed his play, but at least since the beta Idra has always tapped out the minute things were looking down, and if he didn't tap out he'd tilt and throw away the next game in a series. Here's to hoping he improves his play and grows a pair when it comes to playing out an important match.

i feel bad for kas, he really got screwed over. not that i'm saying the decision was wrong, i missed the minute or so leading up to the DC, but he was definitely looking to win.

unfortunately theoretically anything can happen in starcraft so to say that he would've won without a doubt means the game basically had to continue to the point past where some players would have already gg'd.. definitely a rough situation.

Sigh... poor Kas. Difficult situation, but I would have preferred a win to have gone to Kas. I guess on the bright side Feast was already up a game, so it wasn't a tiebreaker; Feast could have still won 2-1 even if he lost. Oh well, it's just unfortunate is all.

as unfortunate as it was for Kas to have this happen to him, this just further reinforces that TL runs the best tournaments, when considering the BoxeR situation, and the level of analysis they through together to get that solved in a repeatable, and explainable fashion. If kas was as far ahead as people state, couldn't a similar scenario have been presented in a unit tester, and tested? /sigh
I now have autographs of both BoxeR and NaDa. I can die happy. Lim Yo Hwan and Lee Yun Yeol FIGHTING forever!

He went 1-1 against the koreans in his group, but 0-3 against the foreigners. A foreigner losing is not always the fault of the koreans.

Idra has skills but he is very over blown. He only did well when most of the other pros were "newer" pros and his past experiences gave him an advantage. However, as the "newer" pros are getting more and more experience, he is simply not keeping up. He should retire.
