The peppered moth is not a feared hunter or a fast flyer. Rather, the peppered moth is a master of camouflage, earning its name from its distinctive coloration that allows it to blend in perfectly with the light colored trees on which it hides during the day.

When the industrial revolution hit in Great Britain, however, the peppered moth faced a dilemma: soot from factories left most of the trees it hid on a solid black. The peppered moth was quick to adapt though, and within a few generations most members of the species sported a much darker coloration to stay hidden against the polluted trunks. As pollution from the industrial revolution has died down, peppered moths of the originally more common color have started to come back.
