[MLG] Dallas Preview
November 2nd, 2010 02:58 GMT
The MLG StarCraft 2 National Championships are set to begin on Friday, November 5th and run all weekend until the evening of Sunday, November 7th. This will be Major League Gaming's third and final event for 2010. This is the big one, folks. The crowning achievement for North American StarCraft 2 players carries a hefty prize pool, MLG's biggest of the season. $17,500 will be split among the top eight players, but this time the field of competition will be doubled, from the 64 of Raleigh and DC to 128 in Dallas (because everything is bigger in Texas). First place will not only receive $6,250, but also the title of Major League Gaming's National StarCraft 2 Champion, to be forever remembered as the first national champion and all the glory that comes with it.
The full schedule for this weekend's events can be found here. Keep in mind that games start Friday, November 5th at 21:30 GMT (+00:00) and will be streamed by MLG throughout the weekend on their website, so keep your eyes peeled on the SC2 Tourneys Forum for a stream announcement later on.
Now that we know what's at stake and when everything starts, let's take a look at the contenders, shall we?
IdrA can beat normal players with just a single thumb.
IdrA will be flying back from his most recent trip to Korea, where he acted as foreigners' greatest hope in the GSL 2, to defend his title and try to repeat his performance from MLG DC. IdrA isn't the only one flying to the United States to get a piece of the action though! A slew of European, Asian, and even South American players are traveling to Texas to give IdrA a run for his money. In addition to local North American favorites like HuK, SeleCT, KiWiKaKi, drewbie, TT1, Tyler, and more, the MLG newcomers include the entirety of Team Liquid, Fenix, Sen, and ZpuX. Socke, with his very impressive 3rd place finish at MLG Raleigh, will be back as well to remind everyone of his incredible Protoss play.
MLG Dallas will be set apart from Raleigh and DC by the huge team aspect as well. Let me show you what I mean as we break down the four largest clans that will be represented in Texas.
Root Gaming
CatZ: I'll teach you everything you need to know! KiWiKaKi: I already know how to defend 7-pool. Root Gaming will be out in force, with CatZ, drewbie, qxc, KiWiKaKi, SLush, and Bubba confirmed and Sheth and CauthonLuck as perennial "maybes." KiWiKaKi, SLush, and drewbie all recently took part in the EG Masters Cup Series Round of 16, and SLush even managed to take second place and a cool $500. qxc and drewbie both are widely considered to be some of the top Terrans in the region and it's only a matter of time before they smash their Zerg and Protoss opponents for good. Four of the top eight seeded players going into MLG Dallas are from Root Gaming, and you can bet they are ready to take one of these tournaments all the way.
Fnatic MSI
Smile for the camera, Gretorp! Fnatic MSI has previously seen success in MLG events, with TT1 earning the 10th highest seed going into the weekend, and Gretorp at 16th. KawaiiRice showed us some great games back in DC, but unfortunately for him and for Fnatic, he is not on the list of registered players. Fortunately for Fnatic, Fenix and Sen will be flying in and playing their hearts out. Both of these guys had some success in Brood War, but in SC2 they have shown signs of real brilliance. Fenix and Sen both were invited to play in the Blizzcon Invitational just a couple of weeks ago, but neither managed to come home with a podium position. Fenix managed to take first place at the Intel Extreme Masters North American Championships just a month ago, so if anyone has a title defend, it should perhaps be him. Fnatic MSI is bringing out their big guns for this one, and I for one am excited to see how they'll fare!
Evil Geniuses
iNcontroL measures his bench presses in IdrAs. Aside from IdrA taking down all comers at MLG DC, Evil Geniuses have shown varying degrees of success at the previous MLG events. This is of course due in part to a seeding mishap at Raleigh which caused Machine and iNcontroL to have to play each other in the very first round, and eventually lead to iNcontroL knocking LzGaMeR out of the tournament entirely. Despite their previous woes, however, the entire lot of Evil Geniuses has shown that they're not going anywhere. LzGaMeR and Machine in particular just came in at 3rd and 4th in the EG Masters Cup Series, and iNcontroL is still boasting the 15th highest seed in MLG. IdrA is in top shape right now though and is coming to Texas with a 1st place title and the 4th seed spot. LzGaMeR and iNkA have some seeding points as well, and Axslav and Strifecro will be making their first MLG appearances to help Evil Geniuses achieve even more! With all of EG representing this time around and defending champion IdrA on their side, I'd say they have an extremely good chance of leaving with some cash and a podium position or two.
Team Liquid
Liquid is mass recalling HuK to Korea. Team Liquid is bringing every member they have to compete in the tournament this weekend. That's right, TLO, HuK, Tyler, Jinro, HayprO, Ret, and Nazgul are all flying in to take part and display some European muscle in this "National" Championship. The boys in blue have been very busy lately, with three of them already living in the TL-oGs house in South Korea. Right after the tourney, HuK will be joining them and Ret will be on his way soon after, leaving Tyler as the only Liquid member still in North America. But of course, before these guys can even think about their GSL 3 qualifiers, they've got to kick butt and take names here in the States. HuK of course was the 1st place winner at MLG Raleigh and is the highest seed for this weekend, but coming in 3rd at both the Intel Extreme Masters American Championships and MLG DC has left him wanting more. He may not be stopped by an American living in Korea (IdrA) and a Korean living in America (SeleCT) this time around. Or, perhaps we'll just see a bunch of mothership rushes. Who knows?
And The Rest!
Ryan and Spades in their matching hoodies, how cute! The field may be filled with imposing figures from highly regarded clans, but don't forget about the lesser known teams also being represented, like vT Gaming, Inflow Gaming, Dignitas (SeleCT, anyone?), vVv, and NrG. Davids have been known to slay Goliaths from time to time, so don't count anyone out! HDStarCraft might be one of the more surprising names in the registered player list, but everyone has a fighting chance. Check out the rest of the players and their seeds right here.
That about wraps up our MLG Dallas preview. All of the pictures were used from my Flickr and you can bet I'll be taking tons more throughout the weekend. If you're interested in spectating, passes can be bought online for $25 on MLG's website or at the door of the venue, which is right here:
Hilton Anatole 2201 Stemmons Freeway Dallas, TX 75207
If you've never been to an MLG event, I highly recommend it! The experience is different for everyone, but I've never met anyone who didn't enjoy it. Again, the stream will be announced closer to the start of the event, so keep your eyeballs glued to the SC2 Tourneys Forum and MLGpro.com to see it right when it goes live. To the live spectators and the stream viewers around the world, have fun, and to the players, good luck.

DC was awesome in person, so anybody with a day's drive of Dallas should go! I bet you can't make it a more amazing environment, but I challenge you to so that MLG will continue to grow its support for SC2.
p.s. nice writup josh, looking forward to more photos and videos. hopefully MLG will have a better press policy this go-round

|
With so many top class players, this should be a great tournament to watch!
|
if only MLG came to canada... nice hoodies!
|
Great write-up, good luck TL of course. Would love to see Tyler do well.
Is NrG.AhhBoxxah playing? After that all kill vs EG I would not mind seeing more from him as well.

Really excited. Hearing about Team Liquid all coming back here to participate will be epic.
In epic proportions.
|
Thanks for the writeup Josh! I'm so hyped up for this weekend, driving down from Oklahoma friday with silver sharpie and fanboy mentality ready!!!
|
God, I'm so pumped to see me on the player list. Even if I get absolutley slaughtered by the pros it will be worth it.

Great line-up. This is going to be an awesome tournament!

I wanted to get work done this weekend. Guess that's off the table!
GRACKEN FIGHTING
|
Would love to see these games, but since I'm out of town this weekend, and since, unlike every other major tournament, the VODs come out about 3-4 weeks later (after I can't help but hear the outcomes) I won't be able to enjoy this tournament.

|
Is Colbi srsly playing? Good for him! looool
|
Yeah Colbi's playing lol, EG has their whole team going, roots got like 6-8 people, fnatics got 4-5, liquids got everyone going. Top 16 is going to be a dogfight, even top 32 can be considered a big accomplishment.

very nice josh glad you are taking this very seriously, keep it up!

Can't wait!! only a few more days.... this tournament is insane.. the skill level is just WOW...
|
dallas is going to be the mecca for western esports for a weekend
|
MLG goes where they think it will attract a lot of people, and in recent history that used to be large halo cities (Orlando, Raleigh, Columbus were all repeat cities of events just in 2009 I believe). With the success that Starcraft 2's audience had, and the fact that our # of spectators at DC probably surpassed halo's quite handily, I wouldn't be surprised if they go to more SC2 heavy locations such as Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles (so cal in general is f'ing enormous, but not as much for halo), etc.
|
Wow, Idra SMILING?! GOGO GREG FIGHTING
|
vVv Fighting!
Wish I could be there!
|
Awesome preview! go go HuK!
|
I'd almost like to see Idra lose. I'm a huge fan of his playstyle and skill, however I think it lends credibility to MLG events if even the world's best can lose there.
Either way, this is going to be an amazing event. Great write up!

Nice preview.
Also, nice picture of Gretorp.

Is it just me or have the last couple of weekends been delicious sweet tournament filled delights?
|
It's this weekend?? Damn did that roll by quickly. Very awesome to see TL out in full force and huge presence from Root and Fnatic.
And we get a little preview in the form of Idra vs. Nony tomorrow. I hope we get the brackets up soon, so the hype train can gain even more steam.

Great write up =) It is unreal how much high level SC2 is going on all the time. I almost miss the waiting, buildup, and hype before big events. We are being spoiled and I love it.

So I've been sitting here for quite q while, asking myself who to root for. But I will have to go with may the best nerd win. Since there's too much awesome in the lineup. Personally I'd like incontrol, Fenix and Socke to go far, but that's personal preference rather then a guess on what's gonna happen.
|
absolutely cannot wait for this. I love the player pool and this should be the most epic tourney outside of korea!! :D
|
that is a very scary picture of gretorp.. haha
|
Poor Idra, looks so tiny next to Incontrol :/
|
Hope I can go, hope to meet some of y'all there!

Sadly the only player from vVv going is Rigid. Should be a great event though to watch can't wait :D

I'm thinking Huk vs Ihdra finals. Would be a nice finals, I like 'em both. ^_^
EDIT: wait a minute, the TL people in Korea are coming back to play at Dallas?
|
Wait what, the caster HDstarcraft? if that is true this would be epic
|
Idra is still the favourite to take the championship. The only one who can beat him in bo3 or bo5 is Sen in a ZvZ, but Idra's stronger in the other matchups. His TvZ is too strong for the best terrans in this tourney (fenix/select/qxc) and Huk still has a mindblock when playing Idra. Kiwikaki has a better chance of beating Idra than Huk but Huk's other matchups are better than his. We'll see.
|
i woulndt let gretorp go trick or treating with any kids

nice write up

I'm really glad that Socke is going to make it. I also think it's cool that HDStarcraft is going to play in the tournament. It'll be really cool to see him compete. I hope he does well.

|
can't wait for the liquid guys' and socke's play. i hope i'll have time to watch
|
If this event gets any more amazing Blizzard is going to have to nerf it. Can't wait to see all of liquid in the house, and Sen + Fenix will be a real treat. SO EXCITED!
|
Can't believe all of TL are coming in for Dallas!
|
Wow, socke is playing there? Nice. And wtf...the WHOLE teamliquid Squad? Wooow..gogo Teamliquid ofc!
|
|
I will be attending the MLG Finals in Dallas (spectator) I'm hoping to get many photos and meet some of the players there (if they are willing I hope to get pictures of them or with them :D !!)
Where would I post the pictures of MLG at on TL forum??
|
Once again absolutely no sleep on weekend, but it's totally worth it!
|
|
It's gonna be legendary!!! I'd like to go to spectate but it's too far. TL & Root fighting!

This tournament is loaded. Going to be some great games this weekend. Can't wait.

wow can't wait. I find is so awesome that Liquid is sending their whole lineup lol. Kinda sends a message, we're taking this home and we're sending everything we have to get it!

would be beyond hillarious if HDstarcraft won the whole thing
TL haters would implode of pure rage ^^
also, hoping for Jinro or Haypr0 to win the whole thing
|
Are the videos going to be posted here?
|
Liquid has me the most excited this time, probably because they don't participate in as many events (because they're on different schedules and have bad lag...). Really looking forward to seeing Jinro play. Seems like he's been steadily improving for a while now, and I hope he can put up good results here. It'll also be nice to see where Haypro stands among foreigners, and of course to see how far TLO's zerg has come.
|
I'm really looking forward to this tournament. So many top players will be there. I hope Liquid can put on a good showing.

Anyone know if Sen is ethnic Taiwan or ethnic Han (Chinese)?
|
Dallas? Thats actually fucking close! Monion carpooling I hear? thx go~
|
This had probably been asked before, but do the players flying between Korea and the U.S. get their transportation subsidized? It must cost close to $1000 for a round trip. Fighting for a $6000 first prize seems kind of risky to me?
|
They pay their own way. MLG doesn't provide free transportation or free lodging for any players. This is the reason why sponsorships are so very important.
|
Awesome that HDstarcraft made it through Respect
|
MLG provided a $200 travel stipend for the top 8 seeds, but that's it. Everything else is picked up by personal funds or by sponsorships.
|
This is going to be EPIC!

looks like incontrols practices while doing bicep curls

fueNN - MLG Dallas is being cast by Day[9], DJ Wheat and/or JP according to MLG's own website.
Also, I'm going to be attending with my friends, what a great preview! The worst part is I think I'm most excited about seeing Day9...

Just finished up some interviews that I think you guys will enjoy during the show this weekend. JP sat down with the EG and Fnatic guys and you will be seeing those interviews play out during the broadcast.
I wanted to let you guys know that everyone at MLG is working very hard to make this the best tournament so far. We have been hard at work for two full days in the venue already and we have a great show lined up for you. We listen to everything you guys have to offer and we plan to deliver.
Yes Day9, DJ Wheat and JP will all share casting duties throughout the weekend and we are all very excited about the lineup of players. We just finished up in a room with incontrol, idra, gretorp, sen, fenix and more doing interviews and those guys are ready and very serious about winning. Personally, I cant wait to get started.
So as always, thanks everyone for the support and we will see you tomorrow when we go live for the 2010 MLG Starcraft 2 Championship!

This will be the first MLG SC2 event where I won't be able to see the whole think as I have obligations on Saturday, it's so depressing.
I'm unbelievably excited for Friday and Sunday though, I don't think I've been this excited for a tournament since like WCG 2004.
On a salty note though, I'm so impressed with EG, Fnatic and even Dignitas as well as non-established teams Root, NrG and Liquid. BUT all the other teams have been incredibly disappointing. Not a peep from Mousesports, SK, MYM, aTTaX and mTw. These are big teams with great players and lots of money for their CS teams to travel everywhere but none for it's SC2 players?

@Beside_kr: aTnSocke is from alternate attax. MYM and SK still do not have a very established roster.

in Xeris' videos, you can hear them talking about that Socke won't show because aTn wouldn't pay for him to go, after that it's since been confirmed that he took a late flight and will be there just in time, I suspect he paid for that flight by himself.
MYM and SK not having an established roster does not stop me from being disappointed that ClouD, NaNiwa and MaDFroG aren't at MLG Dallas

Any idea where to see the brackets for this event?
|
|
Oh if they were refusing to pay him the flight then things could become interesting as I suspect that other organisations would be more generous to him.
Apart from that. Yes, I agree that It is sad to see so few Euros (what about Sjow for example or Dimaga?). I wonder why Fnatic did not send Lucifron also?
|
|
any working stream where i can watch this tournament? and when will the brackets be updated?
|
|
So I met IdrA, qxc, iNcontroL, HuK, TLO, Jinro, HDStarcraft, and I sat around and shot the shit with djWHEAT and Mr Day[9] himself for like half an hour today. So yeah. MLG Dallas totally worth it, and there's still two days left.
Also, if any of you famous people read this, I'm Mitchell. :o
