We are happy to announce the TL SC2 Open #2, an tournament for the BNET US Server.
  • Registration opens: Sunday, Sep 26 4:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)*
  • Tournament begins: Saturday, Oct 02 4:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)
Our long term goal for the TL Open is to have consistent, high quality weekly tournaments hosted directly through TeamLiquid. This past weekend we made significant progress toward that goal, as TL's first open tournament, http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/The_Altitude_TL_Open ran successfully on the EU Server. We plan to make improvements to the organization and tournament software, but now that we have one TL Open behind us, we are confident that the basic structure is there.

As with TL SC2 Open #1, we will be opening registration early for professional players. Please only register if you plan on attending. Last time, 14 of 36 early registrants did not attend. If you feel you qualify for early registration, PM me to see if you qualify. As a general rule, if you are not prominently listed in the SC2 International TLPD, you will not qualify for early registration. Check out the current early registrations here.

The prize pool for this tournament is provided by TeamLiquid. If you are interested in becoming a short term or long term sponsor for the TeamLiquid Open, please see our advertising / sponsorship page.

* Note: For TL SC2 Open #1 we had 780+ total registrations (including waitlist), but only ~450 actually checked-in. That means if you register, even for just the waitlist, and show up for check-in, you have a very good chance of making it into the tournament. We had ~60 byes in the first round last time.

It's the same. 500$.

Edit: NVM I'm retarded. Yes it's 300$ lower because of the economy.

The prize pool is smaller because we do not have an official sponsor for this one. We did not plan for every TL Open to be $500, that was just Altitude being awesome and providing a larger prize pool.

Even though the prize pool isn't significantly smaller than the EU hosted tournament, this doesn't really bode well for E-Sports in the US if TL can't even find a sponsor.

Looking forward to it nonetheless.

If you have changed some settings to your local time zone in options, then yes it is chilean time. Mine show up in CEST, which is my time zone.

The last tournament's finals started ~5.5 hours after the tournament began, though we plan on running it tighter this time.

Hey guys hope this will be an awesome tourny! Is there any way a minor sc2 caster could cast this? ( suchs as myself? :D or are you going to get day9 to cast it?) Would love to be able to cast this tourny as it would be alot of fun and might give my youtube channel a popularity boost :D I would be cool with casting with someone else or team up cast. So can anyone give some more info about the casting situation on this?

I loved the first open. You guys did fantastically. The "fact" that games were cast from replays wasn't an issue, but it did present one tangential issue that I hope you guys can find a good solution for in future opens.

The issue is just that with replays being farmed out to a bunch of different casters, it was kind of a chore to figure out what stream to turn on to watch the games I wanted to watch. It made it almost necessary to keep all streams open at once, but then when the Livestream ones went to commercial it would scare the crap out of you.

It would be awesome if there was a way to make a "TV Guide" like listing of what stream will get what game. It doesn't have to be specific. It could just be a certain stream will get X, Y, and Z blocks on the grid no matter who plays.

I understand how this has logistical issues during a live event like what happens if a set is particularly long, etc, etc. These are things I hope that perhaps you or a group could figure out (or we could make a thread to discuss it) and I feel would make the viewing experience even that much better.

That being said what's there is still and already amazing. Just one small request! Thanks TL!

This would be brilliant, just do it somewhat like March Madness for college basketball. Everyone gets a block of 16/32 for the first 4/5 rounds, then the more well known get blocks for the next couple rounds, etc., and put on the bracket who will cast what when.

Guaranteed it will be someone in Diamond :D, all participants are in diamond but not nearly in the same level as the likes of Nony.

I hope we can grab some interesting statistics about the state of the game and how much influence Patch 1.1 had on the game. I know it's not perfect but something is better than nothing.

So if the early call doesn't fill up all the spots, can the rest of the people (Of any rank) register afterward, or is the entire tourney plat-diamond level only?

Assuming Blizzard gives SEA players NA access in the patch is about to be released, I'll register. I haven't touched SC2 for like 2 weeks but I'll probably practice since this is a pretty good motivator.

Didn't Nony or Tyler (or whatever) lose a PvP in his TLA when his plat/diamond opponent used phoenixes against his immortal push? Kind of ironic since Nony said he created his pheonix heavy strategy because he was always losing against immortal pushes.

Early call will only fill a small portion of the spots. Once "normal" registration opens anyone can register

Yes, that's what the "open" part means . Anyone is welcome to register once registration opens, regardless of rank. The only requirement is you have a US Bnet account.

We do have a record of who no-shows. We may do something with this in the future.

Also even if the open registration fills up (which it will), please register for the wait list. Last time we ended up including everybody on the wait list and we were still short to fill a full 512 man bracket. Don't think you won't have any chance of playing just because registration fills up.

Awesome, wonder how many people will sign up in the first 5 minutes of registration.

I love the time zone feature in profile that updates this tourney's thread in the newspost, just noticed that, it's really nice.

Good to hear about TL #2. Couple suggestions:

1. If you're only going to allow replay casting in the end grid, then use that policy for the entire tournament. The let-down and lag that viewers experience between the live early rounds and the replay casting was really bad. Also, isn't it equally important (if not moreso), to prevent cheating in the early rounds? If you stay consistent, the casters and audience will have better flow throughout the entire event.

2. Plan the casters early. Caster X gets to follow player X, Caster B gets to follow player B, etc. Then for the grid, say which caster gets which QuarterFinals, which Semifinals, etc. Have 1 primary streamer (+1 co-caster) and do not allow additional obs beyond the Referee and official streamer. Have some back-up streamers ready and waiting just incase the main streamers no-show or have technical difficulties. By pre-planning the streams, you will be able to announce, ahead-of-time, who will be streaming what. This will be a huge plus for viewers, preventing confusion and the frustration of trying to find what you want to see.

Does anyone have any help for someone looking to get into casting? What tools does everyone use to stream/cast? I would even be interested in getting my feet wet casting in this if I could figure everything out in time. I've been told back when I played counterstrike that I would be a really good caster.

Also, super pumped for this! Definitely gonna be signing up and trying my luck against TL's greatest! :D

Lucky me I ordered 3 copies of SC2 when it launched A preordered one from the US to get into Beta that will come in handy now will deffinitly try to get into this one aswell even if I got smacked around in only round 2 last time But I guess one has to keep at it to get anywhere like all competitive games!

And just to get my point on the Casting last time I hope we get some Europe based casters this time around since the streams last time were lagging quite heavily and shouldnt be because of my 100/100 connection other then that I must say I really enyoed Wolfs cast.

Looking forward to another set of amazing TL.net inspiered games!

No, we do not. We just feel that donations to our tournament prizes aren't in the spirit of TL. We've never asked for donations before and we don't plan to. That said, we are in the process of looking for sponsors to increase the prize pool.

How often are each games to be played apart from each other? It says it starts at 1:00am KST which is 11:00am for me, although I won't be able to play till the afternoon of the next day at the earliest. I'd like to be able to sign up though not if it means playing 1 round and being forced to then forfeit. If someone could get back to me on this it would be great. I apologize in advance if there is another place this is posted and such, this is my first time on the site, or posting on the site.

Haha yeah because Zerg is still UP even after patch 1.1. I have a feeling that SC2 is going to be very Terran heavy with a spattering of Protoss players, at least on the higher levels, for a while. A bunch of Zerg players were holding out for the patch hoping that it would give Zerg some buffs but since that didn't happen a bunch of Zerg players are jumping ship. On a side note I wonder if Sen is still playing Zerg? He's a great Zerg player and I would love to see him in this tourney.

First, 3-5 streamers in a game is never going to happen, that's super inefficient and we'd never do that.

Second, we don't stream the later rounds live because there's no way to enforce fairness. Players can just listen to the stream or have their friends listen to the stream and cheat off it. We're not going to just assume people don't cheat.

Replay streaming is what we'll be doing unless we find a suitable way to delay a live Ustream broadcast, and we haven't found a way to do that yet. We already know that live streaming is better, but we're not going to sacrifice event integrity just because fans like it more.

Seriously, if there is one universal truth about online competitions (or any competitions rather) it's that a lot of people will cheat if they get the chance. Cheating by listening to a stream is so easy too.

The tournament software that handles registration and check-in will manage this. Once the tournament starts, you are given your opponents battle.net information and on the same page you can report wins and upload replays.

On that topic. For those who have EU and US (and other..?) battle.net IDs, will there be an option to add those to your profile on TL or should we just enter the US battle.net ID before the tournament?

Anyone can sign up, there's no requirement for skill level. Nobody is going to make fun of you if you are bronze. You might lose early in the tournament, but it's 100% your choice if you want to play.

T 128 (25.5%)
P 184 (36.7%)
Z 162 (32.3%)
R 28 (5.6%)

Suprised by this breakdown, i was assuming more terrans would be assuming; the zerg even outnumber the terrans.

Also surprised by the breakdown, ZvT is my best matchup, because I get so much practice with it ZvZ is definitely my worst closely followed up by ZvP.

I'm pretty curious and concerned about the choice of map for the first round. I was expecting something like Metal, but Delta Quadrant seems so out of Zerg's favor because of the amazing easy to take expansion for Toss and Terran players that only have to defend that one wall.

Maybe I'm just butthurt over it because I have that map vetoed on the ladder t.t

You should still join the wait list, as long as you check-in early you have an extremely good chance of playing.

I wonder if there's any chance of them changing the first round map before the tournament starts. I was practicing on it all night with very little success @_@

Please do not make Delta Quadrant first round. D: That's terrifying for Zerg players. Half of them are gonna be eliminated first round.

Hi I just started a new job and got my schedule today, I will be at work at (12noon Eastern?, that's when I think the tournament starts)

If I am correct i'm working 10:30-5 Eastern time so I don't think I'll be able to attend my round, I'm not sure who to tell this to so I posted it here if you would remove me from the list.

This is inaccurate, registration opened at exactly that time and filled at Monday Sep 27 3:00am KST. Please check your facts before making claims like this, you were most likely confused about time zones. Monday Sep 27 1:00am KST was 34 hours earlier than your post.

I seem to remember signing up for this, and specifically seeing it say "You are already registered for this event" when I went to the page again, but I don't see myself on there Did I maybe register past the 512 and become a back-up of some variety or did I screw up somehow?

Edit: Oh, didn't know there was a waitlist of any variety. Guess I'll just stick around during check-up and hope for the best.

Someone should fix the countdown timer. Right now it's stating when the actual tournament is going to begin, rather when check-ins begin, which is 30 minutes earlier.
