MLG Raleigh TL Blog
Intrigue and I will be posting random tidbits about MLG and our experience here as we help them run their StarCraft 2 event. Most recent posts will be on top. Check out video logs from Liquid`Tyler (NonY) and others at TL's youtube channel.
Day 2 - Saturday
- MLG is known as the premiere US gaming competition, but the final three players are all from outside the US. Kiwikaki and Huk are both Canadian and Socke is from Germany.
- Huge crowd watching Kiwikaki vs Huk, with really nice reactions to every move made. Can't wait to see the grand finals and how awesome that atmosphere will be.
- MLG has an "extended series" rule, which means if two players played each other previously, and play each other again, the Bo3 is "extended" to a Bo7, which includes the first score. For example, if Player A beats Player B 2-0 in their first Bo3 and they play again, then Player A would start out 2-0 in a Bo7.
- Many players (like Kiwikaki and Inka) agree that the Euro ladder is more difficult and has higher level players than the US ladder. Socke, the lone European Protoss at this event, certainly plays a different style late game PvT, opting for Carriers with lots of Shuttle-Templar harass. He even made a mothership against Drewbie.
- Really interesting how differently the P players play PvT. Kiwi goes Colossus tech, massing them throughout the game, while Huk has shown Colossus into Templar tech or straight Templar Archives in his games against Drewbie.
- Kiwikaki is the only Root player left in the draw after a stellar day for the team. He came into the tournament seeded #1 and hasn't lost a series yet. Interestingly, Kiwikaki hasn't been a featured casted match yet -- the winner's final will be his first.
- Out of a field that included Drewbie, Qxc, Cauthonluck, Painuser and many others, with 5/8 T players in the winner's finals, who would have expected that the much lower seeded Lastshadow would be the last hope for the Terran race in the final four?
- Day 2 is winding down, and our final four are Kiwikaki vs Huk in the winners finals and Socke vs Lastshadow (ajtls) in the loser's final. After so many TvTs, it's surprising that the final few matches might be all PvP.
- Incontrol's secret to success to staying alive in tournaments. Note the killer expression.
- MLG, despite having no history on which to base their analysis, actually did quite a good job at seeding the tournament, as their #1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 seeds all made the winners' quarterfinals.
- Most of the winners bracket matches will get casted today. Lzgamer vs Incontrol is first on the list, cameras are being set up as we speak.
- Yesterday TT1 made it a point to thank us about giving him a chance to play in TSL2. Given their histories, this tournament could be a bit of redemption for both him and for Lastshadow (ajtls).
- Huk after seeing the GSL qualified players list: "I guess foreigners aren't that far behind. **** I should have went. I mean, this is a nice event and all, but 85k is 85k."
- Both Day and Lee Chen of MLG are both rocking the TL shirts today, and MLG_Shrew generously made me the proud owner of an MLG shirt. He's monitoring TL IRC all day for stream problems, let him know his hard work is appreciated!
- Nadagast is supposedly nasty at Natural Selection, the RTS/FPS hybrid game as well. There is a lot of healthy respect among the MLG staff for the top WoW guys, and rightly so, given how much better those guys have done in the SC2 tourney thus far.
- Casters are here bright and early reviewing scripts and getting ready for the broadcast. Venue is slowly waking up, and you can hear the sounds of rock music and team halo growing louder and louder.
- First guys to show up for early morning practice: Socke, agh, Huk, Response, Gretorp, Incontrol. Even had a little time to get in a few 4v4s with the other MLG admins.
- A quick trip to get coffee and we're off to the convention center bright and early. We're down to our final 24 players (8 in winners bracket). Really pumped to see who makes the finals.
Day 1.5 - Friday Night
- After a long seven hours, we're ready to do it all again tomorrow at 10:00 AM EST. We're very excited for tomorrow's matches!
- There was a huge crowd watching Select's FPV, as he was one of the fastest screens there, constantly switching around. You could see a lot of the fans who weren't used to the high APM and multitask with jaws open and shaking their heads -- it's clear they've never seen real RTS hand speed.
- The Root guys, especially the French Canadians Kiwikaki and Slush, have this extremely calm air about them when they play. They are very chill, collected, and measured. It's a big contrast with EG's passionate style, where you can read the wins or losses by the players' reactions.
- Gretorp played two close TvTs, the Bo3 where he eventually lost to Silver took as much time as two rounds for everyone else.
- It's fun to watch coaches and managers at the tournament. Complexity's owner, EG's manager, and Xeris (for Fnatic) are always there living and dying on their players' results. They make great fans.
- So many TvTs were played today, but the final sets of matches have a good number of cross race matchups. Hopefully the lone Zerg hero Slush can make it farther.
- Awesome moment in the Socke vs Drewbie match when the Mothership appeared, the roar of the crowd was deafening. Great series there.
- Huk is hilarious, having his zealots /dance several times in game. Lastshadow also gets super excited when winning battles, almost jumping out of his chair.
- Team Root is legit. They have five players in the final eight of the winners bracket. Slush is the only Zerg alive in the winner's bracket, and he played a great defensive game against Masq's reapers.
- The top World of Warcraft player Nadagast is the real deal. Very nice Terran play, and very very fast. He has a legion of fans too. Is everyone on TL going to make fun of Inc for losing to a WoW player now?
- Sad about Tyler losing, but if someone had to beat him, at least it was TL's banling Incontrol, who had to face his teammate Machine in the first round.
- The winners bracket final eight are: Kiwikaki PvT Nadagast, Lastshadow TvZ Slush, Qxc TvP Huk, and Cauthonluck TvT Drewbie. Check out all 24 players still alive (with losers bracket) over at GotFrag.
- After a long day Intrigue and I are finally done. The SC2 event completely finished and 90% of it was perfectly on time, not bad for MLG's first try.
Day 1 - Friday
- Brackets will be up here soon. As the tournament progresses, check for updates on the page and on the actual stream live blog.
- MLG thinks Day[9] is too ugly to go on camera without makeup, and this may or may not have upset him. Husky on the other hand is "enjoying this a bit too much" (his own words!).
- Bracket comes out at ~5:00 PM EST. Since this is the first SC2 tournament, there's no previous results on which to base seedings, so we could see some big names face off in the earlier rounds.
- The meeting's finished, and our heroes file out for a group photo. Something about the act of lining up makes people smile goofily and look like kids waiting for the schoolbus. And then, back to practice!
- Just had a player meeting in a conference room upstairs, and the biggest concerns voiced are regarding the disconnect and extended series policies. Here's to hoping there are no disconnects when the game has been decided!
- Former TSL champs are sticking together -- Tyler (Nony) is warming up against JF, who is not at the event but helping him practice.
- Gretorp vs qxc warm up game is currently drawing the largest crowd.
- Huk still uses 0 as the hotkey for his nexus, so his left hand jumps all the way from 0 to e back to 0.
- Players warming up get to play one game and then must step off, so some players prefer playing against the computer (like Machine) who has been just moving banelings around and expanding everywhere in the same game against the comp.
- Day has fans, asking for his autograph by his side. Huk (wearing a white hoodie and big headphones around the outside) gets interviewed on camera. Lots of players standing behind and watching the players warm up and practice.
- Doors are open and the players are streaming in, making a mad dash to the computers to practice.
- Intense debate between the players and casters as to which group of booth girls (Dr. Pepper or Doritos) are more "effective at promotion." Intrigue and I went to investigate.
- Security to Incontrol: "Players are not supposed to be here." Incontrol: "Do you see this jersey? It says Evil Geniuses." Security: "You may be evil..." Incontrol: "I went to Harvard. Then I went to MIT. I'm supposed to be here." (Security leaves him alone).
- TLAF-Liquid`Tyler finally lands, and is immediately interviewed by JP.
- Some more pictures of the venue. The main stage and the control room, where the magic happens.
- In addition to the main sponsors like Dr. Pepper and Doritos, there are other sponsors setting up booths here, including Hot Pockets and Astro peripherals.
- Shoutout to MLG Shrew for letting us use his camera. We found a picture of the EG guys looking hardcore from yesterday. From left to right, Incontrol, Inka, Machine, and Lz.
- We found the FnaticMSI guys Xeris, TT1, and Gretorp in the interview room with all the casters. Day and Gretorp wouldn't stop talking about Banshees. We had to tell them to stop so we could take a badass photo.
- Here is the SC2 Tournament Area, where all the action will happen later today. All the techs are going over the computers as we speak for some last minute checks.
- "Yo gangsta, how do I get in? Do I just walk up and be like 'I'm Huk bitches?' or what?" -- Huk to the MLG PC Tournament Director.
- We got our MLG blue ref jerseys and official badges out of a back of a truck just now. They have a color code just like TL does with names. Black shirts are Halo refs, blue shirts are PC refs, and the red shirt is Ryan Moore, the PC director. The color hierarchy is not unlike TL.
- FPS guys supposedly talk a ton of smack when playing. When MLG had Gears of War on their Pro Circuit, the refs had to make sure the teams wouldn't punch each other.
- MLG's venue is legit. It's huge and you can see the production value quality everywhere -- lots of cameras, staff, and techs. Here's the Halo area.
- JP is rocking a TeamLiquid Shirt under his "pro" black sportcoat. Look for it on stream.
- The MLG administration staff love the Liquipedia Entry for MLG Raleigh, they even used it as a resource for their own newsposts.
Day 0
- The Prince of Qatar came to MLG Orlando to play WoW, supposedly with a backpack full of cash. He plays StarCraft 2 now and flew Incontrol over there to coach him. You can hear him in the background of TL Attack: qxc.
- Trancez says that Lee Chen, the guy who gave us this great interview, rarely ever gives interviews and is basically Diamond Rank 1 of MLG administration for the PC division. Check out the interview if you have time.
- The two other SC2 refs, Trancez and AngryBird, are longtime TL lurkers. They even played a lot of BW back in the day. They also do WoW reffing, and say they love the TL community because of our standard of posting and moderation (at least compared to WoW).
- The Halo kids are big on trash talking to everyone, and PainUser apparently got into a shouting match with one of them outside. "So you're one of those StarCraft nerds?" Painuser: "You're here for a Halo tournament."
- Intrigue and I met the four casters -- Day, JP, HD and Husky. They are all in the same room and sleep on the same beds in their casting pairs. How cute.
- I arrived at the same time as HDStarcraft and sat in the same van to the hotel as him, but he didn't know I was sitting right behind him. He lost his sunglasses and I texted him "sorry about the sunglasses" and he looks up really confused and says "Hot_Bid?" to everyone in the van. IRL trolling ftw.
Check back for more updates and photos soon.

Thanks! Going to F5 this thread

Halo players are just all pissy because they're playing a grandma speed FPS that's only good because it's stuck on a console with a controller .
All kidding aside this blog is sweet, can't wait to see more updates.

is it this guy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamim_bin_Hamad_Al_Thani oh never mind apparently anyone can call themselves a prince in qatar ;o
haha just googled 'prince of qatar mlg' and got a bunch of interesting discussions
+ Show Spoiler [from wow days] +WoW Sideshow - The Prince of Qatar
For those that may not be involved in the esports scene, you may not be aware of a guy named "Ooi", also known as the prince of Qatar. Pretty much every top or high-recognition arena player has been in contact with this guy at one point or another. Basically, he is the prince of Qatar and has an absurd amount of money due to, obviously, being a part of the royal family.
What he is most known for is giving players an exorbitant amount of money to play with or for him to get arena points every week (and, incidentally, proving why a lot of middle eastern countries are failed or collapsed states; use all of that oil money on infrastructure and jobs and not on the elites you dimbulbs).
Nobody really knows why he hands money out like this. Maybe he is just a lonely individual, but the cash he gives out is a lot higher than you may think as Yog, Sonydigital, Pookz, Twix, Valrath, Veev and many others including myself have all been paid to be a part of this cartel. Although I haven't really been involved with the guy in a while, the amount of money paid out is easily close to a grand just for playing 10 games a week. For end-of-season gladiator titles? Over $500. For rank 1 titles? Over $2000.
If you play on Blackrock and have been wondering why Pookz, Valrath and several other players have transferred off, the reason is money. An insider reported to me recently that Yog was paid $4000 to transfer his character to Ooi's server and has been getting paid $800 a week for some time now.
God only knows how much account sharing is going on as not everybody always transfers their characters to play with/for Ooi for money.
Does the prince of Qatar have the resources to pay off Blizzard employees from account action?

Man, what's with all those FPS people. No wonder why I have to turn everyone's mic off when playing on Live.
And lol @ Hot_Bid. It never ends with you.

they have MW2 as a game choice? Ugh, COD4 Pro mod is a far superior FPS product. Now I've gotta look up if they play with any restrictions in MW2

Intresting and good stuff to come this weekend, thanks for the blog !

Awesome blog haha. All of these had me laughing.
And @brn4meplz, they play MLG variant settings. No explosives except for Frags and Semtex, no shotguns, no akimbo, no killstreaks i BELIEVE, not sure about that one. death streak only copycat, friendly fire on, no OMA or Bling, riot shield, tac insertion, etc etc.

Oil FTW
Suppose anything that adds money into the game is good 'n all.
As for the ToS violation, I think this comes under "don't shag the boss's daughter" rule of international business, easy to overlook. If indeed Blizz security is that good in the first place and not just complete theatre.
|
Shit pain user is a tall dude, most people would of been intimidated. Gotta book mark this now.
|
I remember some years ago when I played WoW, this "Prince of Qatar" supposedly bought the best geared character in WoW at the time (the character had a 2-set item that had a drop chance of like 1 % before most people had even killed the boss that dropped it) for somewhere around 10 000 dollars (not 100 % sure about the amount, could be more or could be less). Furthermore the guy who sold the character simply leveled a new one, and the Princes new character got banned pretty swiftly (the whole thing was pretty public as it was one of the best players in the world, so people generally kept tabs on him and noticed when the character transfered to a different server).
|
Haha awesome, can't wait for more updates!

I believe this kid had one of his minders line up all evening in London to get him _5_ copies of Starcraft 2 on the launch night. I know this because I was talking to him all night (he had UAE diplomatic credentials). I forget if it was Qatar or another emirate, but it seems to fit given what's been written here.
Why he needed 5 copies who knows...

trolled by hotbid hahaha :p
seriously though the halo3 players are all 16 years old and acting like pricks.

If you want to piss of the Halo 3 kids, just say point check. Literally half of them will rage at you because all of them have no points or accomplishments.....
|
I'm so stoked. Interesting to hear about the Prince of Qatar. I wonder how much money he's blown on games?
|
Just for the record, I proudly call myself a "Starcraft Nerd". Doesn't seem like an insult to me.
|
Ugh, I didn't want to believe all the crap about the Halo kids but if you guys are saying it I've got to believe it :< Silly Halol kids.
|
"So you're one of those StarCraft nerds?" Painuser: "You're here for a Halo tournament."
wow i just peed

I say challenge the Halo 3 kiddos to street fighter. By that I mean gather up your (big) sc2 buddies and brawl in the middle of the parking lot. Dont forget to videotape the asskicking. Also, watch out for the low blows. GL HF

Seriously, Halo is such an utterly mediocre game, and its biggest fans seem to be the most obnoxious fratboy douches in the universe. It's only natural there's going to be animosity between them and SC players. If it weren't for the fact that Halo is so tremendously popular in the US and thus probably is financially a better choice, I would say they should drop it for Quake, which is clearly superior from a competitive standpoint. PainUser's right on target.

Quake is a brilliant game. Agreed Avrithor. Also. Fuck yeah Painuser.

I really love reading these types of live blogging.

Halo is for FPS players that can't hack it in CS or Quake. The Prince of Qatar stuff is interesting. Starcraft is truly a game for the elite now.
|
Halo community isn't that bad, theres always a couple of jerks on every community but overall i would say the console community in general is not as bad as it's painted, for example where I live most players are extremely polite and helpful on our local community sites and they're just very competitive. Also PC gaming is sometimes overlooked but i will still say that once you discover PC gaming its really hard to go back XD. I do like Halo as a game, probably the most competitive FPS console game out right now. OT: looking forwarrd to enjoying some fine starcraft 2 this weekend ^_^

So much hate on halo... Its a great team game with a huge following. It's success has allowed mlg to branch out to titles like sc2.

Next to that Halo 3 is a weak Sequel to the original H:CE MLG started with which is arguably the best FPS for competitive play on consoles together with maybe shadowrun. Like this thread btw, this kind of funny behind the scenes intel is invaluable to the experience.
|
"FPS guys supposedly talk a ton of smack when playing. When MLG had Gears of War on their Pro Circuit, the refs had to make sure the teams wouldn't punch each other."
lol I'd definitly believe this. I'm actually hoping the clash of these gaming cultures gives the SC2 pros more balls as far as friendly trash talking goes. The halo kids are gonna feel threatened by SC2 since it's a dynamic game to watch and could possibly knock their game down. If SC2 players don't know how to push back a little and act like meek nerds, it'll be like blood in the water for those sharks. "Time to man up."
Having B-rad on our scene doesn't help too much either.

Intrigue and I met the four casters -- Day, JP, HD and Husky. They are all in the same room and sleep on the same beds in their casting pairs. How cute.
How adorable. Im excited to start watching these casts!

Yea that's true but people most people here have never played halo competitively and i was just surprised at the bad rep it has here. Believe me halo has nothing on GOW in terms of douchebag kids playing it.
|
Also yeah, try to watch a little of the halo pro streams on saturday and sunday if you get the chance, i love quake, counter strike and starcraft but halo is also very fun to watch, especially with MLG's great commentators, give it a shot and you might like it, its not as fast paced but i guarantee you'll know when something amazing happens as the crowd will go wild.

This is too good.

lol I love live tourney blogs. Keep em coming!
|
Umm how does the live stream work? If someone could pm me or reply here that be cool i just went to the site but can figure it out. I grabbed the hd pass but there so much stuff on that page. I hate when websites don't have it figured out. Live streams should be a highlighted feature on there page.
|
Damnit I want an interview with Gretorp that'll have him explain the clown-popping concept.
|
ill definitely be checking this a few times over the weekend and ill be watching as much as I can.
Plus please take out that Halo comment from Painuser, because as you can see its made people go completely off topic with pointless arguments. Who really cares which game is better or is more competitive. If you don't like Halo, don't watch it, simple!.
|
Lots of awesome and fun trivia, keep it up!

I haven't watched MLG in a while but last time i did im pretty sure it used octoshape. So it will most likely be similar to ESL last week if you watched that. The stream is normally on the Front page when it begins and for HD, i think you just sign in on that page.
|
wait a minute is the prince married to his cousin!? just read a wiki link someone posted, scary shit! :O
|
how much does the MLG stream cost?
|
oZii: The tournament hasn't started yet. It'll be streaming live sometime after 5 PM EST, and iirc SC2 starts closer to 5:30 PM EST. The stream will be literally right on the front page of www.mlgpro.com , you can't possibly miss it. It's a general stream for all games, and in the stream window you'll be able to select which stream you want to use (e.g. Halo 3, Tekken, SC2). Don't worry, they "have it figured out." You just don't have the time zone or scheduled 'figured out,' but its all good.
EDIT: Kiarip, its free for the "normal quality" stream and $10 for the "high quality" stream. Here's a post from MLG_Lee in the Raleigh Preview thread:
On August 24 2010 21:17 MLG_Lee wrote:For those of you with questions about the stream, here's the breakdown:

I look forward to my first opportunity to IRL troll. That sounds like fun.

Hot Pockets should be forced to spend all their promotional money on investment in laxatives, the poor innards of anyone who eats one of those things...

Like I've said on multiple posts before lol, when HotBid came to the DC LAN back in May he was the most successful IRL troll ever haha, but not in a malicious way, just in the most epic lulz way possible

Intense debate between the players and casters as to which group of booth girls (Dr. Pepper or Doritos) are more "effective at promotion." Intrigue and I went to investigate.
I loled pretty hard on this one. Give us the other booth girls pics now!!!!
Keep the pics comming.

Security to Incontrol: "Players are not supposed to be here." Incontrol: "Do you see this jersey? It says Evil Geniuses." Security: "You may be evil..." Incontrol: "I went to Harvard. Then I went to MIT. I'm supposed to be here." (Security leaves him alone).

Intrigue and I went to investigate. Ohmygawd, solid work there Dr. Pepper, as well as you Intrigue! They are all cute, but there are a couple of really gorgeous booth babes repping soda and hanging out with nerds all weekend.
After hearing Incontrol on the previous two TL:A!s and seeing his huge figure in the EG picture, this made me literally LOL. That man has one of the driest senses of humor in the world, and he's smart enough to pull it off - I love it!
The Halo kids are big on trash talking to everyone, and PainUser apparently got into a shouting match with one of them outside. "So you're one of those StarCraft nerds?" Painuser: "You're here for a Halo tournament." Wonderful, mature comeback Painuser! I love the entire Halo series (I used to play it competitively in Halo 2's heyday, but now just for fun) and am extremely pumped for Halo: Reach, but I couldn't agree more with what most of the other posters are saying - most of the players are 14 year old douche bags - I swear that "ZOMG RAPE!" is literally the dumbest, most overused phrase in video games, and 99% of the things I hear on Xbox Live when playing Halo involve it. I don't even play with a headset anymore. Well played Painuser!
Intrigue and I met the four casters -- Day, JP, HD and Husky. They are all in the same room and sleep on the same beds in their casting pairs. How cute. That is adorable. I bet Day[9] is a cuddler.
This is a great post, and with your sense of humor, this is going to be an awesome sort of behind-the-scenes live view of what is happening in the world of MLG! These updates are great too by the way - I really wish I was there with the rest of the TeamLiquiders, as this looks like an absolute blast with so much cool stuff going on! GL HF everybody, and give 'em hell at America's first large StarCraft 2 event!
|
Dammit, I can't wait for the stream to come up. f5f5f5f5f5f5
|
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah GOD why isn't the stream "streaming" :p..
And everybody is calling me to go get a drink, they need to know I need my nerdfix. Understand people! UNDERSTAND!
Edit: Do you only get sound when you pay?
|
Players warming up get to play one game and then must step off, so some players prefer playing against the computer (like Machine) who has been just moving banelings around and expanding everywhere in the same game against the comp.
Beating the system already huh?
|
C'mon HB give us more pics!

Huk still uses 0 as the hotkey for his nexus, so his left hand jumps all the way from 0 to e back to 0.

the tekken stream has been on and off and the quality seems pretty decent, though can't really judge when your just staring at where casters should be sitting i guess

Nothing new is really going to happen till the pregame show starts...unless someone gets rolled in a warm-up game haha. For the most part with MLG most of the news is with Halo because its been considered the main event for years, but I'm sure Stacrafts first turnout in MLG will change a lot of things ^_^

Players meeting just happened in a conference room upstairs, the most discussed being the disconnect and extended series rules. Here's to hoping there are no disconnects when the game has been decided! I don't like what this implies...

Any idea on how big the SC2 crowd is compared to the other games?

lol irl trolling, i near died when i read that

Halo players have no grounding to trash talk anybody. The play a newb fps game with control sticks.

Any event that takes Brawl seriously as a competitive game is suspect.

I used to play Halo competitively and a lot of the community is immature but most (note I say most) of the top pros are respectful guys. You talk to Walshy who has been around for years since the Halo: CE days he is really approachable and just a nice guy. However the random MLG "kid" is annoying, racist and just plain abusive (yea I'm generalizing), but it's those people that give MLG a bad name. But the reason why I think MLG has done really well over the years with Halo is because even if the game isn't that skill based (but that doesn't mean that any random will win) it is really popular and approachable. Plus the game has more depth than you may think and all maps are edited through forge just for MLG.
It's really cool to see SC2 at MLG and I hope this tourney goes well and they keep the game for every future event.

You're coming into a PC SC2 dominant community expecting them to know a lot about xbox gaming. The only reason xbox gaming was even mentioned in this thread is because of the OP remarks about how xboxers were being abusive. Theres no point coming onto one site and trying to change the opinion of people. I play xbox competitively in aus and the same thing happens there, pc and xbox always having a go at each other. You're overreacting to small things though.
Also weren't you going to work?

It looks really professional.

Yeah, the quality is pretty good.
Btw, does anyone managed to get the stream working with VLC?

Well the HD stream has rewind feature plus you can pause as well it being in better quality obviously. So I wouldn't really feel like a sucker. Watching normal stream myself tho.

Update the Java and Octoshape, despite having them i tried doing that and it worked
Try also opening it in different browsers, im at Firefox and its working fine

I'm having same issue with stream. Anyone going to restream the stream for us that can't get it to work?
|
Had to reload the site many times before the stream would start. Trying to purchase the HD stream but that part also seems broken atm.
|
I think HD vs SD will be more noticeable once the games start and the cameras moving around a lot ect.
|
Hey, the stream isn't working for me with Safari but it's performing very well with Chrome.

Fetish for hands....now we understand =P

The HD stream is spectacular.
Good on you MLG!

are you kidding me? this stream is super nice. they should make it crappy so people shell out the cash

Are you guys watching at mlgpro.com?

I saw I had $36 in my paypal account left over from years ago, so I spent $10 on HD - definitely worth it!

Wrong
If yo upurchase the HD stream you get...the HD stream
If you dont purchase anything you get the regular stream, which sadly does not seem to be working for some folks here.
|
Nony owned him already., pretty much gg, already
|
NOOOOO I had it but i f5'd to fast are you serious

Hmm, the free stream is 16: 9 and when maximized on a 16:10 screen it cuts off the sides. Hope the HD version doesn't do the same.
|
I can't tell if my HD is working, after I put in the email and activation code on the Purchase HD page it says all I need to do is tune in. But once I go back to the stream it still has "Upgrade to HD!" on it.
Edit: Hm, seems to be working now.

There appears to be a bug in the player that surfaces with 16:10/4:3 resolutions - the video is 16 , and expands to 16:10 vertically instead of horizontally, causing the left and right side to get cut off when you fullscreen.

Agree, this is a weird build by Zerg...
|
the HD stream is stable but quite bad quality ingame. The contrast is way off (too dark) plus in fullscreen for some reason you cannot see the whole picture. I hope they fix this.

Ugh. People who actually think HD and/or Husky are decent as casting irritate me. I just hope they don't use their loud always excited voice.

Yea you BETTER learn to love these commercials, especially the ones that have singing in them like that damn Kiss commercial which has been in MLG for the past 4 years, thats right the same commercial and same song. I just rock out to it, even tough i hate KISS.
Guess thats a small price to pay, they need the money, cant complain.

The HD stream is the same way, however it is still watchable. The clipping of the edges bothers me more, missing on the minimap grinds my gears.

If your player cuts off part of the picture in full screen and you are on Windows you can use the Magnifier and set it to "Full Screen" view (The view feature might just be in Windows 7 but the magnifier tool should be available in the earlier versions). Hope this helps a little.

I second that, if Blizzard is going to push SC2 into the e-sports scene, they should really consider making it easier for tournament organizers to set up games. It feels so archaic setting up games like this.

Thanks for the advice on the ratio problem on the streams (both free and HD). I will try and change my resolution since my second monitor is in my office so no magnifier trick for me. Still they have to do something about the contrast. At least it's watchable in comparison mostly to ESL which was a disgrace. It's surprising that regular streams on ustream like iCCup, Day9 or GLHF are far better in quality, at least ingame.

I find HD the most exciting talker when things start to happen, while i like Husky he really looks out of place at a event like MLG.

totally agree. i like the reminder that these are actual people who enjoy what they are doing
|
Old Spice Report makes me want to stab things.
|
Best duo so far I've seen in Day9 + JP. It just adds so much to the game and the stream in general.
But, and this might just be me though, day9 keeps interrupting JP quite alot. I get it that he has alot to say and most that he says is gold(comedy and sc2 knowledge) just like JP, after all they both love the game and everything around it, but it just comes off as much better if JP actually gets to finish what he's saying
All in all though keep up the great work!
|
I'm watching something called the Old Spice Report, and I appear to be watching two frat boys be unprofessional.
What the deuce?
|
Day9 & JP set the record straight about ZvT. These 40 minutes, talking about the game mechanics and telling stories from the SC era, were the highlight of the first 2,5 hours.
|
Agreed, Old Spice Report is stupid. Show and Tell is a poorly veiled commercial in a poorly designed commercial.
|
Yeah, the Old Spice Report is quite possibly the worst thing ever. Don't ever watch it... ever. I don't know why they're showing it :/
|
Dude, that was messed up showing a guy getting hit by a truck.
|
I wish they would just stream a bunch of commercials....even the same one over and over, rather than show the Old Spice Report.
|
i care so much about madden NFL, thank you old spice report.
|
Day 9 with the best save of the day. Please, please do interrupt.
|
haha yay, day9 and JP interrupted the crappy halo show!
|
What is this Old Spice Report thing? Somehow it seems so very... fake..? Like everything seems staged.
Anyways, I agree with what FarbrorAbavna said about Day9 kinda not letting JP finish, it tends to happen quite a lot when he co-casts. But overall they are doing a great job. HD and Husky may want to think of some interesting stories to tell or something when it gets awkward...
|

I know, right? I was horrified. "Let's show people getting possibly grievously injured and pretend it's funny! It's got to be funny! He was hit by an ice cream truck!"
Ridiculous.

JP and Day are brothers right?
|
I think the big difference between HD/Husky and Day9/JP is the amount of live experience they have. Just like the players, being live really switches things up, even more so when you're in the spotlight as a caster. Still really enjoying the stream so far, minus the Old Spice Report >.>.

Pucket is the main commentator for Halo 3. I suppose you haven't followed MLG but I, as I have followed it from 2005, notice of the ammount of professionalism he has brought. Yes, that show is just to inform players of the last news and no it is not a show where robots speak. Not everything in life is super serious business brah. Go and watch Halo 3 stream and tell me how unprofessional he is now.
|
You're coming onto TL and telling us our community is too serious when you'ore from the MLG community? I wouldn't call Puckett professional, he does his job and he has fun with it and jokes around a lot, that doesn't make his style professional, just more loose and freeballing it. He's professional when he commentates but inbetween games he's stuffing his face with hotpockets and talkign with a burgerpocket in his mouth. Not that its not targetting his demographic, but that doesn't define professionalism.

So the last twenty minutes have been players scrambling around to find brackets so an admin finally ended up giving me a copy. Gotfrag.com had it wrong earlier, pitting group 1 winners against each other, when in fact group 1 is playing against group 2 for this round. Also, count yourself lucky to have a functioning stream. The 100 or so spectators here have no cast audio from the game being projected. Rumors say the players could hear them so they unplugged the speakers.
Otherwise, I am having a grrrreat time!

Tealer/Tyler/NonY just lost to agh Who is that, anyway?

God, ZvT is retarded. I shed a single tear for all the zergs out there.

He lost in WBR2.. winners bracket round 2. If you were being funny im sorry.

Yeah, I'm mainly from the MLG side of things, but your right about Puckett. He does a great job at commentary, but is a goofy person overall. Like you said, just targeting your audience :p, MLG's main audience is like 13-18 or something. SC2 so far is the only other stream I enjoy watching, and the commentators are great. Husky seems a little discombobulated when games are not starting smooth though lol, but the others are great.
I'm a bit disappointed about hearing the Halo guys attempting to down-talk the SC2 guys though...it's most likely the small immature side of the community though.

What the deuce? Pucket is the main commentator for Halo 3. I suppose you haven't followed MLG but I, as I have followed it from 2005, notice of the ammount of professionalism he has brought. Yes, that show is just to inform players of the last news and no it is not a show where robots speak. Not everything in life is super serious business brah. Go and watch Halo 3 stream and tell me how unprofessional he is now.
Because showing someone get hit by a bus is totally awesome, brah. I wonder why he's been there since 2005, instead of actually getting a real job. Maybe the fact he can't read names has something to do with that.
In other news, I just got done watching the second LZ vs. Catz game, and I really don't think any other game shows just how gross the imbalance between Z and T is.
Lz: I'll just spam Reapers! What? It didn't work? Well, I guess I'll just push now. LOL WUT I WON?!
Props to LZ. He's a great player, but if that game didn't show how a Terran player can do a insanely powerful harassment technique, yet do almost no damage, and then just steamroll a Zerg, then you're blind.

Catz double expanded, I'm pretty sure that put him behind and Lz decided to push right when he was at his weakest. There was a reason why he got run over so stop crying about imbalance.

You must not play Zerg. Otherwise you would know that by that point even top Zerg players have in excess of 1500 minerals, so throwing down two expansions would have hardly affected anything.

that Zerg Catz looked pretty good that Infester Harrass was great although he still lost against Terran no suprise there. still awesome play

Catz coulda easily kept turlting, he badly miscalculated the situation by attacking LZ at that time.

Husky and HD are a million times more engaging than Day9. Just because most SC2 players are awkward nerds doesn't mean the rest of the world wants to hear them commentate games.

More engaging than Day 9? I think you have it the other way around. I like Day 9 better cause he gives good insight into what is going on. Sometimes Husky and HD just say things for the sake of talking which kinda puts me off. Husky and HD aren't awkward nerds?

One of the reasons why SC is so big in korea is exactly the fact that their commentators do exactly what day9 does, insightful commentaries with very honest excitement, HD unfortunately is very predictable and even phony most of the time.

HD and Husky are popular to casuals because they are just saying what is going on.
Day[9] is popular because he talks about WHY the players are doing what they're doing, gives insight into what the player might be thinking at the moment, and generally gives much better information. We don't need to hear HD say "Oh gas, I guess that means Reapers!" every single time a Terran makes his refinery.
HD and Husky are the equivalent of a football announcer saying "OH, HE PASSED THE BALL! HE'S RUNNING NOW! HE MIGHT GO FOR THE TOUCHDOWN!"
|

The main reason why they can do those more insightful commentaries in Korea is because virtually everybody already understands the basic concepts and tactics behind the game. That is not yet the case in other countries so you have to start with educating the masses. After that you can switch to the deeper tactics and thinking patterns behind the actions.
It's like showing football on tv in a country that had no previous access to it except for a few boys playing it on the street. You will have to explain what offside is and why it's there in the first commentaries and make sure your audience understands what the rules are. Once you've done that you can start talking about 4-3-3 systems versus 3-5-2 etc.

How's Day9's YouTube channel doing?
HD and Husky are the perfect mix of color and technical commentary, you see it in everything from ESPN's coverage of the WSOP to fucking Kirk Herbstreit and that old guy covering all of the big college football games.
Day9 is great for the informed player, but for the average retarded masses HD and Husky are absolutely ideal.
Of course sometimes every commentator says shit just for the sake of talking, that's the entire point of a commentator, but Day9's commentary's are full of unnecessary somewhat masturbatory pauses in the action, at the same spots over and over again - if you're just viewing for entertainment's sake.
Day9's probably a better teacher, but he's not a better commentator. Quit bitching about the coverage and enjoy the fact that eSports are becoming a reality.

This is one of the main problems I have with HD and Husky. They don't just dumb down the action for the 'casual fan', but they are often just flat out WRONG. They not only called things wrong, but they also make wild guesses about what is going to happen. They are just all over the place, and it makes me groan so many times during the cast.

OMFG I KNOW!! They're not psychic, when they're casting they should never ever speculate about what might happen next. Because no broadcaster in any sport ever does that, ever. That is so incredibly unprofessional of them, to guess at what might happen next.
I'm sure you could do a much better job. Or your BFF could. You guys should open up a YouTube channel, I bet it would be full of epic win!!

HD has really improved as a commentator -- I remember watching him just after he got started, and I love how excitable he can be now. As an (now) informed viewer, I enjoy Day9 more, but I definitely think MLG made the right choice in using the two teams they are.
Drewbie vs. Socke 3 was astounding. Perfectly timed mothership for the win.

I'm here in Raleigh getting some fresh air with KiWiKaKi and the other Root guys preparing for the grand finals against HuK. Due to MLG's rules, KiWi must win 3 games and HuK only needs to win 2. This is because of their previous 2-1 series.

I believe the reason is to offset the fact that Huk already won one series from KiwiKaki and therefore deserves some advantage. After all, if this were single elim, KiwiKaki wouldn't even be in the tournament anymore.

Out of a field that included Drewbie, Qxc, Cauthonluck, Painuser and many others, with 5/8 T players in the winner's finals, who would have expected that the much lower seeded Lastshadow would be the last hope for the Terran race in the final four? He even started in the loser's bracket because he showed up late to his first match (DQ'd). Is this correct? According to the brackets, Lastshadow was sent to loser's bracket by Kiwikaki in the Winners Semifinals.

Hey Hot_bid and Intrigue,
Great to finally meet you after chatting over the interview. Great blog too. I hope everyone enjoyed the tournament and the streams. Looking forward to doing it again in DC!
We had a great time and definitely learned a few things for the next time around.

LOL @painuser to the halo guys, painuser is the man. a really tall one also. And Halo players I saw there, reflect on how much intelligence it requires to play the game, none at all. I met a few cool halo2 players, but most of them are ether 10 year old or young adults that forgot to grow up. I'm glad the sc2 community is a higher class than the rest. I met all the top players including the winners and they are who they should be at their age. Pursing a dream and love to party.

Can you guys tell me when and where the vods will be?

Really surprised the top 3 were all toss. Super happy to see that the first SC2 event by mlg was successful. Props all around to the MLG guys.

Have you guys been following day 3. Halo 3 finals are fun as hell to watch and are really hype. Did you watch any SSBB, Tekken or Halo?

I was a Halo 2-3 pro and MW 1-2 highest placing in 2 was 3rd at Orlando 07. I can vouch for the community part you were saying asianinvasion. It was actually the reason I quit H3 as it just wasn't worth it to deal with the constant drama involved in Halo. I think it lies more in PC and Console community's rather than genre back when I played DoW at wcg and before that CS and AA all of communities were respectful. Console communities are terrible though and halo's is actually one of the better ones GoW players really did fight literally every tournament. I would see players going to the hospital at said events from GoW fights was absolutely stupid. Glad the SC2 community is so great can't wait to go back to an MLG for it even though I'm not great at SC yet.

I was surprised. Apparently Hot_Bid and Intrigue are asian. And Intrigue is not a hot girl duped to no end by TL rumors.
